I developed a solution and then turned it over to my IT guy to serve it over our network (I am not a "computer guy"). Our IT guy hasn't worked with FM before, but we seem to have gotten it up there and it seems to be working as is should. However, I am unable to copy the solution. I had hoped to be able to copy it locally so I could take it home with me, make my modifications, and then overwrite the version residing on the server. There is no "save a copy as" function available on the menu and if I try and drag the files to my desktop I get the following: Error Copying File or Folder. 4. I'm currently working on a web solution and in one point the user creates a new record in one table and creates the related records by means of related keys and allow creation of related records. This all works great but the problem that I am having is that one of the fields that the user provides input is a checkbox which is tied to a field in the related table. When the user submits I get an error of 501 and I noticed that this only occurs for this type of HTML form of type input. If the HTML form type is a radio button and tied to the same field, it works fine. By several testing it seems that you can't edit a related field using HTML checkboxes or rather HTML input ty…

  6. I've got FMP server 5 running about 10 databases. I'm trying to backup a single database to a specific location. When I set the backup schedule and try to choose just one database, the databases are greyed out. Using FMP schedules, can I only backup folders or all of the databases? I'd prefer not to separate the databases into separate folders. I'm not too good at AppleScript, so if that is my only choice, does anyone have a sample script that I could look at? Thanks for your help.

Before investing time and money for software and equipment, I had a a few general questions that I'm hoping someone will be able to answer. (I wasn't able to find clear answers on the FM site, or from the people at FM.) I would be running everything on a Mac G5 running OSX Server. I want to publish databases online, make them accessable via web pages, and have the ability for people to add images and documents, in addition to text to the DB via web pages. Hi all, I am interested in putting my database on the web and I have no experience with doing this. I was at Devcon and was told that I can simply use instant web publishing and post it. Most of my scripts need minimal adjusting for web compatibility. Would this make people able to go online to a website and use the solution? One question I have is that with the re-login step it says it is web compatible but displays "Re-Login[Perform with dialog(NOT COMPATIBLE)]", does this mean that it can only perform without dialog?. Pardon my ignorance on this issue but it is new to me. Also, any information on sources that would teach me more about Web based solutions…

Has anyone experimented with Flash as an interface? What middleware would be required? In reading through the documentation: Data Storage in Online Databases If you need to access evolving information such as stock quotes, account information, and product orders, you need to store your data in an online database. There are several database applications that range in complexity and price, from Oracle to MS Access to FileMaker Pro. Usually, you need to integrate another software application (known as middleware or application servers) to retrieve and format data from the database for use in Flash movies or other Web applications. Examples of languages c…

When a new file is added to the directory it doesn't show up in the remote file listing and if tried to access by directly opening from the shared folder the user gets the "file in use" error, even though I know the file isn't in use. Thanks to the wisdom gleaned from this board, I've avoided purchasing a new computer to run FMS 5.5 (now I can take everybody out for ice cream!), and will be adding a SATA interface and 10,000 RPM Raptor drive to an older machine (running OS X) instead. The built-in interface for the existing drive is ATA, and runs the optical drive as well. My question is: what would be the best way to use the two drives to optimize FMS performance? Ditch the old one and put the OS and data on the fast one? Put the OS on the old one and the data on the new one? Make a software RAID out of them (or out of partitions of one)?

BUT, when I go to have a script import records from a database it says it can't find the hosted database...although from any other type of script it will. BUT when the files aren't hosted on the server everything works fine. I am a very experienced FM programmer and I have torn my hair our on this. HELP! Mac or PC clients are same.

I've just got off the phone to Filemaker technical support, who told me that it is a 'feature' that you can't edit a global field on a hosted file from a client machine; for changes to global fields to 'take', you have to make the change to the file locally, then re-serve it. Aside from being the dumbest 'feature' I've ever heard, I was wondering if there were any workarounds for this issue, and what other people do when they need to alter the contents of a global field from a networked client. I'm running Server 5.5 on OSX Server. I needed to make security changes on a file I have on the server. So I closed the file, opened it with a FM6 client, and made the changes, then closed the client. When I went to reopen the file on the server, it shows already open (grayed out). However, it isn't. On Remote Admin, it doesn't show in the files list, and it also doesn't come up when I click the "Open Files" button. So it isn't open, and it isn't closed. Basically I can't get at it at all. Any ideas? I don't need the file today, but I have to have it running by tomorrow.

In a multi-user solution hosted by FM Server 5.5, a scripted FM export file (with summary totals) is created and written over each time the script is run. The problem is, each user who runs the report apparently needs their own specific export directory path in order for the script to work correctly on each PC. Keeping this going has required frequent trips to scriptmaker to "reestablish" the proper export directory path. Any suggestions (other than to upgrade to v7, which we will do sometime soon, I hope)? When trying to delete a record either from FM directly or from a script step, the client just hangs and does nothing. No hour glass, coffee cup... nothing. I once had a client reboot the entire network and there was no change, but then about an hour later the problem just went away and everything deleted normally. The problem doesn't seem to exist when the database runs locally but since it is intermit…

Hey guys! I'm having some issues with an aplication and though that maybe someone here could help me. I'm running an aplication that uses 17-20 different databases. It was created using FM 6, it is running on a windos xp os, using a filemaker server 5.5. the application is opened using a "start_up" scrip which initializes the file to verify the user. the application verifies the user by pulling information from a "users" database, and comparing to entered information. My problem is that if someone is logged into the databases, and someone else goes in, the system can not figure out what is going on..... o.k., let me see if I can explain this a bit better.…

I am developing a filemaker solution to be shared over 10-15 users using FileMaker Server. There'll be about 20-25 files in that solution. One of the files is storing low-res images, no more than 40k each in size, and all in gif and jpg format. There's about 200 in there and already the file size has shot up to 18MB. Between 15 users, with another 25 files, over 10/100 network, using filemaker server, what's the recommended maximum file size? FileMaker quote a theoretical maximum size of 2GB (i think it's something like that) - though obviously that would be a nightmare using the network situation above. What max filesize am I looking at before I start g…

When I open a specific file with FM Dev 7 I am presented with a password dialogue that consistently shows the same user name that I used last. I enter my password and away we go. But when this file is served the dialogue uses the user name set in the registry for the current user AND an unknown password is already entered. It is not the correct password either and I have no idea where this password is coming from. When I use the client on the new server, I can see the databases, etc. However, when I try it from a client pc, the server doesn't show up, only the old server is visible. Even if I add the ip address into "specify hosts", it isn't there. I must still have something not set quite right. Can you point me in the right direction? The IP address I have doesn't seem to work, and the DNS name I have ("xCompany.com") also doesn't work. Does this have something to do with the company's firewall? How do I figure out what address to use for a served database when prompted to specify the host? In a related issue, I've published the database via a workstation that has the database files open. While at the company, I can just enter the workstation's ip address, and view the database on the web. Outside the company, that doesn't work. …

Tried running admin on two computers and the xserve, all the same result. It worked when I first installed server, but not for a week now. Anyone have an idea of what is causing this. I have reset permissions on the admin folder on the various machines, that did not help. Getting FM Pro for all of the users seems rather expensive, since most of them wont need any design functions. I am contemplating using Pro's IWP feature to set up a makeshift web server for the users to start with. This should atleat get them up and running. If our needs grow, i was thinking about using FM Server on some more serious server hardware as the main web server. Any comments or suggestions?

I did a test conversion yesterday and all the files converted okay but when I go to 'Open Remote' and then click on the server IP I only see the first 24 files alphabetically. I've verified that the other files are all open. In fact I can open them if I type in the entire path. (ie fmnet:/xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/test) I can open any file I want. Even when I go to the screen where I can specify which files I want to show up there are only 24 listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I know that the biggest performance boost would be not in the memory, or processor but in the disks. I thought of getting two 10,000 rpm drives and setting them up using serial ATA meaning the data is on both of them - striped or something I think it's called. I know this can be a bad idea due to the reliability factor but if it goes wrong the most we would lose is half a day's work. Do you think that drive configuration would be the best way to improve performance? Rather than shoving 1GB of memory in I think it migh…
