Is there any way to lock part of a layout from scrolling?? We use large layouts for data entry and have many buttons to perform various tasks. the problem is that when you scroll down to the bottom of the layout the buttons on the upper part are no longer visible can you scroll part of the screen but not all of it?? I need the data to scroll but not the buttons. I tried breaking the data up into different layouts to keep from scrolling down, but that didn't go over well. Some people!!! they don't want to change layouts for data entry but they gripe about having to scroll to the buttons. What can I do?: Thanx

I've found a radio button graphic I would like to use (Buttons & Things site). One is selected, the other isn't. I've tried stacking them, but can't figure out how to use them with an existing value list and how to make the 'selected' graphic display while it's unselected counterpart not. My test is simple - Y, N (auto-enter being no). Is there a way to use these cool buttons? I also found great checkboxes ... same issue ... assigning them to a value list and making them display properly. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have a message appear on screen which contains about 7 lines of text. When the box opens, however, it only shows half of the text. The user has to drag the box to show all the text. This is a pest for the user. How do I make the box appear showing all the text?

Hi, I have a value list in a checkbox field. I'm trying to create a calculation that says "if value A is checked, put A here, otherwise leave blank". However, because I'm saying "Field="A"", the value will ONLY show up if it is the ONLY one checked. If multiple values are checked, none of them will show up in their respective calculations. How can I rewrite the calculation so it will pull value A regardless of how many boxes are checked? Thanks in advance...again, Leah

I have several value lists where each value is a large amount of text. There is no problem accessing the values on the mac. Help! I have a DONORS db (parent) and a related db of Donations (child). In a portal (of donations), I do a find in the donation date field for all donations made during the year for DONORS. The found set of DONORS includes anyone who has donated during 2002, which is great, but the portal also lists all the pre-2002 donations. How do I omit these pre-2002 related records so I can print a YTD tax receipt for each DONOR. I'm trying to build/use a pretty OSX-like popup menu field. It works okay when its setup as a popup *list*. It doesn't work at all when simply changing it to a popup *menu*. Bug? Okay, the field is set to use a popup list, but its set to *not* allow entry. (If you allow entry, then its graphics, even if transparent, cover the intended graphics when selected.) I have two portals in the same layout, both are related to the layout, but not to each other. Only one shows up when I go into browse mode. All of my fields are easily inside the portal. Portal B is set up exactly like portal A. In fact, both have the same type of information (Phone, Address, etc.), just coming from different files (employee residence while at school, employee residence while at home). Hi I got a portal in Invoicing that shows information located in Inventory. From the Product Code field, I created a pop-up list to show the product codes located in Inventory and its description. When I select the pop-up list, I see partially the list of product codes. Many product codes don't show up within the list. What's going on? Where are they? Why?? Any idea Bikeman17

Other than the obvious - being able to change a graphic caross a solution by changing the object in a global container field - I'm wondering if there is any speed/network/file size benefit from doing this? Also - I know that graphics made in FMPro are more friendly to networks, etc. than a bitmap, JPEG, etc.. However, do you maintain this advantage by using global contianers rather than pasting them (FMPro graphics) directly onto the layout? In other words, do global contianers nuetralize any benefits particualr graphic types?

Know this is probably a basic question but am not sure best way to handle it. My main file references a second file of employees. The match field is employee ID. From the main file, I want my users to be able to change the name attached to a record in the main file by using the related name field on the master file layout...but what needs to be updated is the match field in the main file. I tried using a global field but realized you can't attach a value list to it. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

When you define a value list by using data from a field AND including data from another field, is there anyway to "hide" the text from the first field in a pop up list? The data in the first is the match field (id numbers) and the second field is the employee name, which is what I want to be seen in the pop up list. Saw this done once. Two fields side by side at the top of what looked like a list view. Select the first fiels and a value list appears. select on of the items. So far simple stuff. Now depending on what was selected, what looked to be a find perfomed and only the items that matched showed up. And even better, select a itme from the second fields value list and the find even tightened...using the values from both fields to perform the find. Now how the heck did they do this? And even more, how did they get fields to be active as pop-ups at the top of a record in what looked to be in list view? LR

Hello all, I am new to this board, and would appreciate some help. I have 15 fields, each with 4 to 20 checkboxes defined by a value list in another file. I need a report to show what boxes were checked (for all fields, not individual) as line items. This way I can reference the price, and then do calculations. Hello peers! I have a popup list attached to a field. The value list is based on values in an indexed field from a related db. I click in the field to bring up the list, but when I select a value, the list will not go away. I have to click in an empty area on the screen in order for it to shink. I have never encountered this before, so am I missing something? Also, a little background on this project: I am making a solution that will be served. Hi, I have two Qs about portals in a self-joining relationship: 1) How can I omit the record "itself" from its own portal? 2) It seems that the portal only looks at the first related record. Is this true? If so, this self-joining relationship is not as helpful as I would have hoped (it can't relate one record to several others; it can only relate one record to one other record? I have a client database and a comments database in filemaker 6 on win 2000 and mac os9 and osX. In the client database I have a layout with a portal that shows all of the comments associated with this client as individual rows in the portal. Many of the individual fields in the portal are pop up menus with fixed value lists, just to set the stage. I would like to specify values in two or more of the fields in the portal to do a find that would perform like a boolean AND search. OK, after almost 40 hours on this one I am to a point where I dont know what to do. My main database is Jobs.fp5. My related is Contact.fp5. I am trying to get some information out of the contact database and into my jobs database via a value list. But here is the problem... There are 2 seperate pieces of information I need to retrieve. I know Arial and Times are the recommended cross-platform fonts. But at small font sizes, Arial is ugly. And its bold is barely distinguishable from plain. Are there good alternatives? I found two messages advocating Verdana as cross-platform. Anyone had troubles with it? (It is better looking than Arial, though its a bit wider than ideal.) Okay, within a file I have numerous layouts that use a tabbed metaphor (you can see it if you like in the Template I posted to the Sample Files forum). As you move between layouts, everything is aligned such that the tabs don't move. But how do you handle when tabs take you to different files? The desired appearance is that you're in the same window, just a different tab. For that, the window shouldn't move! But you can't reposition windows, can you? And you can't lock the position of a window, can you? You can't say open this window in the same spot as the current window, can you? So, it seems the only solution is to Maximize the window. I'm trying to make an invoice that has the company's logo in the header. The orginal logo came from an EPS file. I copy and paste it from Photoshop 7 into my layout and it looks fine there. Just when I print does the background (what is white in the pic) prints black. I've tried flattening the image, saving it as jpg, resizing it in PS7 and crying. Nothing seems to work. Anyone else run into this? Got any ideas?

Is it possible to perform a find in a portal? More specific, when i go to my layout with the portal, enter find mode, select a field and enter my find criteria, and select find, the portal still shows all the related records, I was expecting it to show only the related records that met the find criteria. Hello all, When users create a new record they are asked to assign the record to one or more categories using checkboxes. There is an "Other..." option so they can assign their own categories if necessary. I have a tally sheet set up in a related file that counts the number of times each category was selected. Now the users want to be able to also see a list of the values entered into "Other..." and have a count of each value in that list. Is this possible? I'm stumped. I saw an example of this...but not quite sure how it was done. A main job database. Each record represents a job. A second database which contains a record for each contact. The user opens the main database. The user hits an add button, the second contact database comes up, you select one of the records from a list view, the contact databse closes, and a line item representing the selected contact is added to the main database on the first line of what could either be a portal or a multi-line field with a scroll bar. Can I have a valuelist from a global field? FMDev 5.5 reports an error that it cannot be done since the field cannot be indexed... Filemaker breaks out a multiline field as single items for valuelist on regular fields.. I thought that would have been good option - so user's can modify valuelist from the web.

In one of my FP5 databases a field with a drop-down menu appears perfectly (single-column list) on all the iMacs here in the office but on the PC the menu pops up as a multi-column list and fills the whole screen. It doesn't allow me to scroll down or across, so I can't get at all the list values or the "Other..." choice. Sorry if my terminology is a bit dodgy sometimes, I work with the Spanish version so don't know exactly what everything is called in English.

I'm using FM5 for the first time on an iBook running OS9.2. I'm creating a new database, very very simple. I have some fields where I want a predetermined choice of text. I created the value lists ok and allocated them to the fields. I'm building a small invoice system. I have 4 databases for client information, product description, delibery invoice and "final invoice". There are some relationships between them who allows me to include new related related records like "line items" in one portal in the delivery invoice. I have a portal in a contacts DB that I would like to display all records with the last name beginning with a, b, c, etc. I have calculation filed which determines the first letter of the last name and scripts which sets a global field to specific letters. My portal is based on the relationship FirstLetter = :gFirstLetter What I get is a mess...if I set gFirstLetter to A I get the name associated with the current record repeated the number of times there are A names. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to create another file to handle this? Thanks.

How do you all provide Help on your UI's? IDEA 1) I started providing little round "?" buttons that would Show Message with help info. But Show Message restricts itself to short messages (5 or 6 lines) and I don't like when I have 4 "?" buttons up, one for each section. IDEA 2) To solve the first issue, I can put the Help messages up in a separate layout. However, that takes the user out of context. Its better to popup the help off to the side so the user can continue looking at what they're getting help on. So I've searched all the posts, I'm not sure why it wouldn't make more sense to build my own calendar solution from the ground up than to purchase one and then try to incorporate that into my way of thinking. Been working on several databases for Windoze environments and would love to force the look of Mac OS down their throats. I've found a few files - one in french, that have Mac OSX style buttons - but they are mainly just sample of aqua pill style buttons and tabs - they are great - but I want more of the printer icons, etc.. Hello everyone im new to the forum and new to filemaker. I have been using filemaker pro 5.5 now for about a week and i have learned a great deal just reading the filemaker manual and some from the posts here. I am in need of a simple tutorial for creating Conditional Value Lists. I have found some articles and examples but nothing that clearly explains how to do it. Is anyone out there up to the challenge of creating the ultimate clear and concise explanation? I would just like to have one database. I would like two fields, both of which provide value list choices. I would like the second field to have a list that changes based on the choice in the first field. I realize this is fairly basic, but I just can't get my head around it and would appreciate any help you can offer.

I have a DB in which I have a portal showing records in another DB. It basically tracks operations and the times they were performed. The portal shows all of the operations from a certain job. I am building a schedule that will show the last operation from that job. How do I find the last portal record based on time and date of operation. Right now it always finds the first operation.

Running a main database with about 5 related files. Is there a way to be able to have the user change a password in the main file and be able to have it change in the related? Or does the user have to open each file individually and change the password that way. Ideally, it would be nice to have a global field in the main database where a default password can be entered. And then come sort of script would make sure that is the password for all the files. I know this probably is not possible, just thought I would ask. LR

Have Parent file (Faculty) pulling info via portal from Child file (Commitments). Parent file has two (2) portals - one portal for Commitment Amounts using relationship "commitments" key field ID# and one portal for Expenditures using relationship "commitments paid" key field ID#. Both portals allow entry in related file. All data entry is into Parent file. My problem is when I create a new entry in "commitments" portal a blank portal row is placed in "commitments paid" and vice-versa. Is there a way to correct this. I don't want blank portal rows created in the other portal. Could this be due to using the same Child file?:?

For example I have a database A with frield Num( number) Num 1 2 3 1 Base on the data above , I make the value list but the popup can only show 1 2 3 I want to see 1 2 3 1 ...IS there any way to see all value including duplicate in value list? I am putting together a database and calendar in FM and have run into a user interface problem. When my client creates an appointment block at let's say 8 am to 9 am and another at 11 am to 12 pm, I want the daily or weekly calendar view to be able to show the user there is an empty space for the 10 am to 11 am block surrounded by the two appointments. FM Portals with multiple rows don't work that way. They like to be consecutive. Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem. For the most part the calendar part works fine, except for this issue.

I included the hide toolbar as part of a "Open" script for when the database is opened. But when a related database is opened from within the main one, the toolbars come back. I included the hide toolbars in the related database "Open" script, but this does not seem to help. Is there anything I can do about this? Or is this something that the Developer version of Filemaker is needed for? LR

Looking for a pre-done solution that fits a specific need. Looked at a lot of calendars, but cant find one that does the following: A calendar in the main database that shows a month view. A related database that is used for entering data. The data entered would be a start date and a finish date for a task. Then the main calendar would show this spread across the days inbetween. Most calendars i have seen let you enter a task date and time, but is specific to only one day. I need one that can spread across multiple days. Anyone know of such a calendar, freeware or retail versions? LR

I came across a portal use that I have not seen before. I was hoping someone could shed some light on it. The first step is pretty straight forward. There is a portal that show 5 different line items (5 different related records). At the beginning of each line is a button. Now normally if I was doing this the button would have a script, click on the button and it would open up the related database and go to the related record. This button did it a bit differently. Clicking on the button stayed apparently stayed within the same database file, went to a different layout, and showed a larger portal with 20 or so fields of detail for just that record. I can't q…

Hi people, I've got FieldA that has the following checkboxes - "Skoda", "Lada" and "Ferrari". What I need to do is have a portal that views all records that have both "Skoda" AND "Lada" checked. I've managed to do a calculation field - Calc which uses "Skoda linebreakchar Lada" that manages to show entries that contain Skoda or Lada. Help! Thanks, Steve Griff

I'm trying to figure out how to make a browse list of personal names (generated from a valuelist displaying all records used in that field) to search for exact phrases rather than keywords. For example, I want the value displayed, such as Jones, John, to search for that exact phrase - "Jones, John" - rather than the two keywords "Jones" and "John", which has the effect of finding records with "Jones, Tom" and "Smith, John" that are irrelevant. I have a form with basic Client infomation. Below are two portals with 5 lines each, showing recent activity on a client. When I select any field, or particulary when I leave a portal, the screen 'redraws' itself, I think. It even shocks me, think what it will do to users! Any suggestions? What's the best way to deal with the stupid selected record indicator bar on the left edge of the screen in List View?? It causes my tabs and such to move a few pixels to the right when switching from a Form layout to a List layout. 1) Is there any way to move it to the right edge of the screen, such that it doesn't disturb the positioning? 2) Is there any way to turn it off, like you can the rest of the status area? 3) Is the only way to deal with this to leave a few (how many?) extra pixels of dead space on the left edge of Form layouts? Ick. (Sometimes I have layouts that work both as Forms and as Views... but I guess I can work around that, too.)

Thank you for reading this! Think of Books>Chapters>Verses in The Bible. I have a static popup menu of the Books and a dynamic popup menu of the Chapter numbers based on the chosen book. Easy so far. The hard part is then a third popup menu (dynamic) of Verse numbers based on the two choices of Book AND Chapter. A calculation field result displays text based on these three choices. Hi all, Yet another question that is probably ridiculously simple - I want users to be able to add a related record directly into a portal, which I know is possible, but for some reason it's not working. I have "allow creation of related records" checked (as well as allow deletion of related records, which does work). What am I missing? The message I get when I try to type directly into the portal is "The relationship 'Session 1' is not valid and must be corrected before this field can be modified." FM4 Mac Self Relationship within a Contacts file Have Portal with linked Value List - select CARS and all garages are listed etc. First time I have done this and it is very fast and really useful. I would like to know how to make it as flexible as possible. In particular, if a Contact does several things, e.g. Plumbing, Electrics and Joinery, how can these be shown on different lists etc? I am using a barcode scanner to scan product information into a portal. Among other information, the price for each item displays in each line of the portal. Is it possibel to have a field outside of the portal display just the price for the last item scanned (a specific field in the last row in the portal)? I believe I would have to use a calculated field as I do not know if I have a means of executing a script after each barcode scan. I would like to have the price displayed in a much larger font so that it is easier for the user to read. I have been unable get a calculated field to work properly. Thank You.

I have a survey of 42 questions. Possible responses are Always, Sometimes, Never. I am trying to make a talley sheet that would have a summary of how many respondents chose each of the responses for each question. When a user is in a data-entry screen, I don't want them to jump out and do other things, because I have error checks in place to be sure they don't leave fields blank (incomplete entries are a major problem). I want to ELIMINATE their ability minimize 'within' FM (go to other dbs). I assume I can't eliminate the FM minimize/exit windows options altogether, but users tend to exit and then never come back and complete their entry. I guess I can attach a script to shutdown of that db, checking the validity of the record, assuming they are still in it. Or could I attach it to the current layout? I have a database of 550 names consisting of contact information (name, address, telephone, etc...) I have set up a portal to group records based on whether or not they are the same members of a family. Some families only consist of one member, but many have anywhere from 2 to 8 members. Ultimately, I want to print the entire database on a layout that groups the families together. So far, I'm wasting a lot of space because I have the portal set up to accomodate the largest family. Is there a way to make the portal automatically adjust its number of rows depending on the data that it needs to show? M.

Hi, In the previous subjects, I have read that portals aren't always the best things to put on a report, yet i have a report containing 3 portals with 0 to 20 rows. Now the only thing I want to do is to keep the portals together when I print them. So if the 3 portals fit on one page. I d like to print them on one page. What's the best way to define a DaysOfTheWeek value list? Because I use simple column sort (click on the heading of the column you want to sort by), I'd like "Sort Ascending" on such fields to sort M-Tu-W-Th-F-Sa-Su. But I want the field values to look pretty "Monday", rather than "1". I've come up with the following approach: Define the field to be a Number field that strictly demands to be a member of the "Days" value list. Alright... I finally begged and pleaded, and got apportioned enough money to actually buy a plugin for work on my DB. Here's the situation, and I've never actually had to use an external plugin, so I need y'all's advice. I've got a dbase where my users are entering classified ads for a small newspaper. I want them to be able to format these on screen, to look how they want, then export them into XTags. Is there anyway to specify that a global is a constant... doesn't need to be recomputed... and thus doesn't need to be updated on screen? Or, is there anyway to specify in a layout that you don't want the value of a field updated? WHY DO I ASK? I am using one of the very nice-looking OSX-like templates, which have tab-bars that have that cool aqua shading. However, by using a field for the tab labels (for maintainability across many files), that results in needing to have transparent fields (so that the fancy tab shading shows through). I have been in database development for 15+ years but have just acquired a client that is using FM5 to manage some major functions in his business. I know I should do some more research before posting here but time won't allow it. Power users will tab to each field, type in the value with as few keystrokes as possible, and tab to the next... its good to make sure that works well and that you can get to all the fields without having to resort to the mouse. Popup lists are good and bad. They are good in that they allow you to tab into the field; they are good in that they allow you to just type the first character; but they are bad because hitting tab to go to the next field DISCARDS the value you just typed!! How to display this data is not a problem. All information needs to be indexed to a job number. Say, for instance, Job 1024 Each job can be split into Batches.
