  1. Hello People! I was wondering if any one has accomplished to use this approach? - Check boxes in a field that has a vartical scroll? Basically, I need to have a multimple selections (in a portal row) for a signle record entry: eg. ------------portal------------------------------------- Worker| Products Used| [Jack] [ glue,tile,saw blades] ------------------------------------------------------ the reason for need of a vertical scroll is because the Products list is quite long (200+ records) any thoughts?   4. i am interested in creating a flash screen for when someone opens their db. however, when fmp is currently opened from being closed (it's usually kept open most of the time) the filemaker pro flash screen comes up, and i don't want users to have to sit thru 2 flash screens if i can make one of them my own, with the company logo etc... does anyone know of a way to turn off the default flash screen? thanks in advance...

    I have a single file called driver_cards. There is one field in the file named "driverName". In one layout I have the field setup for manual entry. In another layout I have the field formatted as a drop-down list pulling from a value list called "Driver Names". The value list is pulling from the field "driverName" without a relationship. Hello Here is some new info from 1 day of trial and error and 2 min FM tech support (I wish they did weekends!): I am trying to validate a portal field using a calculation that sums the value of same field over the number of records created in the portal (using a self-join relationship). SPecifically, I enter a percent in each record, and the sum of all the percents must be 100. The calculation doesn't occur until after the portal record changed or portal exited, so validation doesn't occur properly. I also have a database called Organizations, with info on orgs. that we works with, such as businesses, churches, etc. Each person in People has a unique ID number, and each Organization in Organizations has a unique ID number.     Hi All, i think the gremlin says it all!! i need to print out (A3 Landscape) a report layout i have. problem is that it is wider than A3 so what i want to do is print the full lot (width) on several A3 Pages. eg. the width is 3, A3 pages wide but it only prints 1, A3 page wide! it's ok at printing down e.g. prints all records but wont print out all the fields across the report! can soemone please tell me what im doing wrong? thanks in advance

    I need to sort a value list in reverse order of one of the displayed (numeric) fields, but there appears to be no native funtion in FM (v5) to do this. Obviously, I could create a calculated field with a *-1 version of the original field and use that, but that field would then have to be displayed (a bit ugly). And as the list is to be used to insert a value into a field, I will then have to re-calc to get the correct value in. Does anyone know of a more elegant solution?   23. Why is it that FMP for Windows will only let me use arial, courier, courier new, ms sans serif, ms serif, and times new roman? On my mac, I have access to all the installed fonts. I understand that there are cross platform issues with using strange fonts, but is there some way of making FMP see all my fonts under windows?     Hi All, i have 3 portals on one of my layouts. each showing 4 portal rows. i have embossed and coloured the fields white and the portal colour is grey. when i print, the first row prints out in grey (on all portals) but shows the embossed effect, but the remaining 3 print out in white (the colour of the field) but the first field (furthest to the left) is half grey and half white and also the 3 remaining fields are overlapping with the colour of the field (WHITE) !! is there a simple way to print layouts with portals on them? to print out how they look on screen? thanks, ricardo

  26. Hi guys, I have a Parent db and a child db. I created a child portal in the parent db, so that I can see multiple children for one parent. The children have some fields in them, that are calculated fields. Now I'm trying to define a sort in the relationship needed for creating the portal, but the sort should be on a calculated field.   28. I have three source files - Lodging, Dining, and Activities. When a new customer requires a custom travel package I want to select entries from each via a pop-up list and copy the contents of the record(s) to the customer package files. I can effect the pop-up selections but am having trouble building the customer's package db. customer is related to pkg by customerid. Pkg is related to the three sub-files - custlodging etc. - by customerid and pkgid. The field structure in the customer pkg files is identical to the source file structure with additional fields allowing for dates et. al. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Mike Griffin

I have State and city MA Boston If people type only MA , it shows up MA and all cities in MA and correspondent information , but if they type MA and Boston , it shows only MA and Boston city and correspondent information. Hi there, Does somebody know why, on some workstations, a big pop-up-menu is shown as multiple lists next to each other and on another workstation there are up and down arrows at the top or the visible end of the menu's?   31. I have a cabinet shop. I am building a questionaire for my customers. The questions that I ask these people all have "allowable" answers, which we select from a drop down value list. The next question is always a function of the answer to the previous question. For example: We ask if you want painted cabinets or stained natural wood. If you select paint we don't ask any questions that might be attendant to wood grain expectations. Similarly if you select stain grade we don't ask you if you will be brush painting the final coat.     I have a portal on a layout in my database. When a user clicks a button on the layout, I would like a certain record to be displayed, and a particular row of the portal to be selected. I can do this, no problem. The problem I have is when the user clicks on a field outside the portal after having clicked the button, I would like that portal row to remain selected. Is Geneva cross-platform and does it use the same percentage of field space on a Pc and Mac?   44. Hi all - i am new to FM so please forgive ... I have three dbs; product, productnotes, notetypes. The product db has two layouts; a product definition and then notes. The notes are dynamic, depending upon which note type is selected, I want to insert a row into the product notes db (i.e. prodno, notetype, notetext). I setup portal to display all available notetypes (selfjoin), and a portal to display the note (product to productnotes). I have a donor database in which I want to enter new donations and have each donation be a separate record in a related database, attached to a unique serial number for each donor. Same question as before but with simplified example...using two tables. wo_test inv_test ------- -------- techname techname serialnum serialnum stockdate usedate I enter "techname" , "stockdate", and "serialnum" into inv_test. My technicians use wo_test. I only want the technicians to see "serialnum" for their matching "techname" and only when "usedate" is empty. This list refreshes whenever the user clicks anywhere or does anything, and it takes a few seconds for the list to refresh. How can I speed the refresh up?     When doing a search on certain fields inside a portal, most of the finds take much longer than they should. Finds that would be instantaneous if done directly from the related database take 30-60 seconds, with a lengthy "processing field..." progress bar showing up. And yet other finds in the portal, depending on the fields used and the content of the search, will execute in no time. I've tried indexing all the fields, that was the first thing I tried.     I defined a value list (valListA) in FileA with the Use values from field: option. The field I chose to populate the list is in a different file (FileB). I also defined a field in FileA that is formatted as a pop-up list and uses valListA to display values. The odd thing is that I am getting some extraneous blank entries in the pop-up list. PackageMain.db5 has Packagedetail.db5 relationship by packagenumber. I've opened a portal in PackageMain to Packagedetail, dragged the fields I want into the portal but when I go to browse mode I click on the portal and can not get into fields.     Hi there, Now i am creating a system just a bit same like the example that given by filemaker , which name: relation, is an office management system, which can keep tract of product record and also can create invoice. But i found that the example given got a problem, just in invoice entry screen, i can add in product record in the portal, but if i add in too much record, it will only show the first 20-30 item in printing(preview mode) screen, it will not made it into 2 or more pages. It is quite a big problem because not all invoice only need one page, sometime it also need more than 1 page. So is there got any way to solve this problem ? henry

    Hello, Here is what I have. Serial # db and Purchasing db. Layout in purchasing has a portal that shows me units in stock, units in process, Units out on loan. The info in the portal changes depending on what I select in the pop up global field. Ex: Select "in Process" I see units in process, select "In Stock" I see units in stock. That all works fine. I want to see a count of each different unit in the portal. Ex: MSMP is the beginning of one of our units serial numbers. I have a calc field in the main file which adds a 1 if MSMP is at the beginning of the serial #(I'm using this field to get the sum of MSMP in the Purchasing db). Now if I choose "In Process in the…

    Hello From Brazil, I am developing a database for a gas station. As the clients finish fueling their cars, records are created and information regarding their fueling such as (total price, type of fuel, price per liter, etc..) are shown in a portal. Since customers here only pay after fueling, the gas station employee needs to be able to select one or more records from the portal and send their added amount to the "type of payment" database. After registering the payment for the selected records they should be removed from the portal. Only payment due records should be shown in the portal. any sugestions? Thanks

    Hi, I'm brand new to Filemaker. I've created a couple of db files. 1. SchoolProj which contains printer_name, designer_name, writer_name 2. Vendors which contains Vendor_type, Vendor Name When The user is entering info into the SchoolProj layout - I want to restrict the Value List for printer_name to be the names of the vendors (vendor_name) from the Vendors database - with Vendor_type = 'printer'. Because of the variety of awards that can be awarded and the fact that there will be mulitple inputters, I need to make this as simple as possible for the user to figure out where to put the data. I am creating a conference registration form and have created several value lists (ie, one for workshops, one for registration type, one for evening events, etc.) Is there a way to assign a fee for each item in the value list. Now that I want to expand my target users I will have to take into account different platforms and different screen resolutions. I have no problem working out the maximum size each layout can be, however there are some factors I can't control, namely: 1.     I have 2db's, customer and contact, I have a portal on my customer db that lists my contacts name and account#, both db's are related by account#, It works great, i select the contact name hit the button and i go to there name in my contact db. when i am finish i press by back button and go back to customer db, but in the portal it changes back to show the first record in that contact db. Is there a way to add more portal on by customer db, so i can select different contact people from my contact db. and when i return from contact db to customer db. the names in the different portals remain unchanged. thanks jim

    I am building a database to make a system of using lots of different things, and putting them all into one solution. Outlook for contacts, Quickbooks, and Excel for some database type info. Right now, the Excel thing works like this: We get a client, when done putting cust info into the DB, we open an Excel template. Each customer has their own workbook.   93. Hello List, I am trying to make value lists specific to a certain field. ie, in DB #1, I have Receiver #, and 16 fields for the frequencies programmed into the receiver. In another DB, I want to have the Receiver # field be a pop up list only showing the numbers from "Receiver #" in the first database, and a "Frequency in Use" pop up list consisting of the 16 fields of frequencies from DB #1 related to the Receiver #. I have a database system that I am working on that is growing in all sorts of directions but the relevant files to my question are Invoice, Line Items, and Inventory. For entering a new order I have set up a layout in the Invoice file that includes a portal to the Line Items file. As each item number is typed into the portal the related info from the Inventory file is looked up and copied into the relevant fields. I then enter in the Qty_Ordered and using a layout in the Line Items file I print out a Picking Ticket for the warehouse help. That all works like a charm, and I couldn't be happier…

I have 3 dbs - client info, jobs, invoices I want to be able to make invoices that pull only those jobs that are outstanding. I have created a calc field that returns X when the 'paid' field in the jobs file is empty. I have a portal on the invoice to pull the data by client. These check boxes will be read-only (records created via a layout with a portal, but displayed in another summary layout as checked boxes).   97. Is it possible to have a field with a value list that is created by the data that is entered into that field? For example, I live in an area that has very unique street names. I do not want to have to enter every single street name in order to "equalize" the way that the information is entered. Can I create a field called "street" that allows me to see a pull down menu of the streets entered or add a new entry (which would then be added to the value list)? This should probably be easy, but I just can't get my head wrapped around this concept.

    On a Mac I do not like the window that encases ones layouts. So I prefer Kiosk mode. Ofcourse this takes away the menu bar and keyboard shortcuts. Is there any way to not use Kiosk mode but still to get rid of the unused window edges? Any other alternatives? Peter

    Newbie question, I think... I have two fields - one called "Order Status" with a value list containing two values associated to it, and another field called "Resolution" that is just a plain text field. What I *want* to happen is whenever anyone enters the Resolution field and enters text, after they tab out of it, I want the Order Status field to change value from it's default (Open) to a value of Closed. I'm really having a hard time with this, and have tried several calculations (I've tried Choose, LeftWords, and a dozen different variations of the If statement), none of which has worked.
