Hello all- I have a STAFF file and a STUDY file. A member of the staff can be a coordinator on many studies and vice versa, so it is many-many, which leads to my COORDINATOR file. Coordinator has a STAFFID and a STUDYID. I want a value list which shows the FullName (calc field in STAFF) of only those STAFF who are COORDINATORS (have a related record in COORDINATOR) as well. I have tried just about every combination of things, but the only way I have been able to get it to work is to have a text field in STAFF that designates whether or not the person is a coordinator. Hi, I am a newbie on FMPro, and I have a question: I have a field TURSPEED with contains values 0 to 5. These values have specific meanings 0 - none, 1 - Very Slow, 2 - Slow, 3 - Medium, 4 - Fast, 5 - Very Fast. I wonder how I can represent the Text Speed in a form layout where instead of numerical values, the actual text is shown (eg. Fast). Of couse, it would be easier to hardcode the speed in text into the field rather than numbers, but then I would lose sorting/index ability on the numberical field. Howdy all, I have a database with an new hopefull invetory system. I would love to set it up to have a list of all the items i can purchase, and a list off all the things I currently have, and would love to be able to move this data from a purchase to my stock. eg. (purchase 100 sheets of paper - 100 sheets moves to stock - Later move 30 sheets of paper to add to a job, hence leaving only 70 sheets in stock. Trouble is I wouldnt have a clue where to start. Hi, I have a ValueList which I'm using for data entry on a form. The ValueList originates from a field in another file. I want the user to be able to use "other" to enter a new value, but then I want to automatically update the file where the valuelist pulls its values. In other words, the next time the ValueList is shown, I want the new value to show up. Is there any way to do this? Thanks in advance!! David

FM give so many suprises. The button just won't work! I've scouted the forum for solutions but couldn't find any (that I understood). There must be a solution somewhere, cause I think my problem is common. Please point it out to me or help me with a reply! I've go about 15 Text fields. And 20 buttons with different Insert Text strings. The script simply inserts a sentance into the field where the cursor is blinking. All fine. The problem comes that I have put these buttons into a selfrelated Portal. I just don't know how I can get the buttons to work again. Sorry about my English. If you can not understand me forgive me... Please I want to find a solution to my problem and I can't. My problem is that I have a file with name "Room Reservations" and another file with name "Plan of rooms" with a related portal from a third file with name "tempfile". I use the temp file to hold all the reservations for a room using "RoomId" match field so the portal in the "Plan of rooms" can appear all the reservations for each room. Hi, I am putting together a complex database solution in FMD6 everything on the screen is a jpg graphic, designed in photoshop (apart from text etc) I am building up an object reference with exact pixel locations for each button or whatever element, Now, yesterday something odd happened - all my graphics are still in the right places on the screen, exactly, but their location in pixels changed! it moved left by 31 pixels. when this happened I checked out various things. I would like to report average age for male and female in a class in a school. I would like to see the numbers side by side in a report showing stats for school, sub stats for class. But the average function is not accurate because it is summing all the students. I unterstand that I could run a gender sort first but that would duplicate the report and make it visual hard to see male vs femail data.

I have a tabbed interface... relational DB... so, I often have situation where pressing a button goes to another file. When going to another file, Freeze Window doesn't prevent the window from being displayed with whatever it had before, and then adjusting to whatever layout the real destination is. This is ugly in an inconsistent way (since to the user, its all just tabs of one application... but some tabs do the herky-jerky, while others transition smoothly... making it unsettling). So, how do I settle this down? Do I need to Hide the destination Window, get it to switch to the right layout while hidden, and then unhide it? But won't Go to Layout and Go to…

I need to collect stats for a questionnaire that has been filled out. Eash question requires a quarterly sum. I would like to do it as a portal solution but the snag is I need to narrow the search down by year. My first concern is that the value for each answer will have to have a calc field that binds the answer&year. Can you think of another way to have a portal filter by two values.

I have a "client" file and an "employee" file. For each client there are many employees assigned. I have an "assignments" file as my middle file. There is a key serial number for the clients and the employees. I work in the "client" file mostly and I add or remove employee assignments in a portal (which views the "assignments" file). Occasionally I run a list for an employee that has all of their clients, obviously from the "employee" file. How can I add an employee assignement in the portal by selecting their name, not typing a serial number? I have a value list that is a list of 25 or so award categories. The last has some values - such as: book award, book award finalist, pulitzer award, pulitzer award finalist I want to be able to do a Find on this value list. If I do a Find and check the checkbox with the category Book Award - the find does a find for any of the values that have the word Book or the word Award in them. So it finds all the book awards and the book award finalists, not just the sing value Book Award. Trying to figure out how to change between 4 Value lists with a Pop-up Menu. What I want is actually quite simple but I'm breaking my brain on finding out how. I would like to be able to change the Value List of, let say field "Checkinbox" displaying the Value List with Checkboxes. There are 4 different Value Lists. Hi All! I have a database of pages of a newspaper, and to set it up quickly, every page contains a number of gaps, and every gap is being made to contain a number of ads, each of those is a seperate table. Now, I made a calculation in the pages database that returns the status of the page. If every gap on the page has the field 'Printed' set to 1, then, it equals 2, if some are set to 1 but not all, it equals 1, if none are set to 1, it equals 0. Then, I have a container field, which if the page status is 2, it shows a global field containing a green bar, 1, a yellow bar, 0, a red bar. OK, probably a pretty easy situation for most of you, but I am at wits end! I have file A that contains products and file B that contains various documents that might be attached to these products (rebates, specs, reviews, etc). I want it simple to attatch records from B to A, the easy solution appeared to be populating a value list from B for use in A. This works well! Documents can be added (up to five per product) and all goes well on that end. I think, however, that there must be a better way that would be more elegant and robust. Hi, I just found this forum & already love it! Here's my first question (I'm sure I'll be posting a lot more!) I have a housing database and a few of the fields have value lists that contain the room numbers for different areas. (For example, NewDorm may list room numbers 1 through 100 and OldDorm would list room numbers 1 throgh 50) The value lists are set up to ensure that each record has a unique item. I'd like to know if there is an easy way to run a report in a layout that will show me all of the rooms still available for each area, or not chosen on each list. Now I know I can't nest portals, so I don't know how to do what I want to do. Or if it's even possible. But here goes... I have 2 databases -- STUDENTS which tracks general contact information and ACTIVEYEARS which tracks membership by school year. A portal in STUDENTS shows all the active years for each student (key is totally unique -- studentID). Occasionally a student will drop from the club and I enter that information into the ACTIVEYEAR record for that student for that club year. Hi, I've tried searching for this, because I know i've seen it, but can't find it again I was sure La Retta made comment about how you could change the colour of the background according to the mode you were in.. I might well be dillusional, but I"m sure i saw it! I'm absolutely certain it was nothing to do with creating a coloured global container, but it was more like a status(currentmode) or something like that. I'm having problems getting the portal to do what I want. I have a portal to an 'allegations' database from the main file. I have a relationship set up based on a field called 'mis #' which is bascially a serial number for each client that comes in. In the portal I'm including multiple fields from the allegation to summarize each record. I wanted to have this portal so when I go into a client's records it will show the 'history' allegations for the client. But what it does is just duplicate the record that I'm viewing. I have created a global field that gets updated every time a navigation button is clicked / first in last out stack buffered by a pattern-count check to prevent duplicates. Hi all, what have people used as user friendly methods to enter times? The best I can think of is actually having 2 number fields: n_hour and n_minute and then a t_AmPm text field, but then I have to create a calc to join them into a real time. That is about the only way I can think of to still be able to use a managable pop up list, but was looking for other suggestions. Thanks!

Hello everyone: I haven't been able to sort a portal using 2 different factors (date and person).The sort that is set when establishing the relationship, does not discriminate the person, only the date. I would like to be able to sort and obtain the 6 more recent dates of one person and paste that data in 6 fields. I included 2 sample files that better explain what I want to do. I hope there is an easy answer to creating a running total in a portal. I have a portal displaying patient unique records which represent invoices, adjustments, and payments. It seems to work fine. I have created a relationship that connects the desired (entered) patient number with the patient numbers of the records from the same file. Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure how to include a running total next to the amount field in the portal. This would be a nice addition. Is it possible to do? Thanks for any help.

Is it possible to show omitted records in a portal?. What I am trying to do is copying the data from a portal with a script and then paste it into another field. I thought that sorting the master file would also sort the portal but ..... didn't happen. I sorted the master file using the omit command and finally got what I wanted but how do I sort the portal in order to show the same sort I did with the master file? Thanks in advance Pablomac

Due to the nature of my new layout, i have used buttons rather than words. As some button pictures are perhaps a tad difficult to decipher, is there a feature available, much like the ALT code (DIV of old) in HTML that will allow you to have a little yellow pop-up (label) explanation on links. Another example of this feature is your standard hover tag that comes up in most msn products. Cheers Jan

I have a portal showing many records and use a calc field "Hilite Record" to hilite the selected row. I also use navigational buttons- previous record, next record.... If I go to the last record my script hilites the last portal record/row correctly but you don't see it because the portal doesn't scroll down to that record. Any suggestions on how to make the portal scroll down to show the hilited record?

Hi, I have a DB that lookups images in a related DB using an item#. There are however images that show more than one item and therefore are tagged with more than 1 item# in one line (like: item#1 item#2 item#3 etc). The problem is that when a user enters - lets say - item#2, the image wont show up, since its not an exeact match... Is there *any* way to work around this? I never tested the system for those multiple numbers and there are already over 9.000 images entered : So it's kinda hard to just re-write a part of it.... TIA JP

I have two related databases, one is the main or "contact" database, and the other holds records of donations sent to our organization. Each contact can have numerous donations attributed to them. If I want to find the number of donors and not the number of gifts in a fiscal year, I use a portal from the contacts database so it eliminates the possibility of duplication, since people can give more than once per year. My problem, is that people's gifts can be coded differently. hi All, i need to create graphs from infromation gathered within an fm pro 6 db. and was thinking of exporting the informationin to an excel file as this seems the easiest and cheapest method. I have two simple files: fileA is an order form for customers. FileA has a portal to fileB where are line items with: goods and quantity fields. I have related the files by using the orderID field on both files. I want to use the result of summary fields from my Line Item into a portal for Inventory in my Product File. The Products I'm selling are subcategorized (think of a validity date attached to a product). So I want to list all the category in stock for each product. Using selfjoin, I can select any category from a popup list and see the detailled records for each, but for a more dynamic viewing, I would like to get a "list" of all categories in stock portal (I just need 5 lines that is the max category I hold in stock for the same article). Hi everybody, Would you please help me to solve a problem with relationship and portal. (Sorry, English is not my native language). There are two files: Category and Clients. Hi, I'm brand new here. New to FileMaker also, so I'm looking for your expertise in this field. I'm trying to set up a relational db where there will be a customer file, a contact person file.. maybe another file too, not sure yet. Hi everyone! Well, I've searched for this on Forum and can't find an answer. It must be so simple that no one's every asked; however, I need an answer because I have forms to mail out. I have a pre-printed form (HCFA) which has two check boxes for M & F. I have an existing Value List displayed as checkboxes for M & F but I can't get them to line up with the form. Is there any way I can 'ungroup' them so I can move them further apart to match my form? The only other thing I can think of is to create two calcs to display them but before I do that, I just wanted to see if I have a better option. Any suggestions? LaRetta

Hi everyone! Sometimes a User may accidently choose a value from a pop-up menu but then change their minds. They want the value to instead remain blank. I tried adding a line to the value list with only one space so they can de-select a previously chosen value; however, this doesn't work. I tested report summaries and the space is treated as blank as far as grouping records but fields with the space sort AFTER blanks. I suppose I could add a button next to the pop-up to clear the field but I wanted to check first and find out how you all handle this situation. Or should I just use pop-up lists and educate my Users on how to click again to enter the field? …

In order to support the re-use of a value list on layouts of several different tables (let's call them A.fp5 and B.fp5), I've created a single table (let's call it List.fp5) containing those values. A.fp5 and B.fp5 obtain the values via a pop-up list, set up by defining pop-up asoption "Use values from field, specify table...List.fp5." So far, so good. The undersireable behavior is that when a value is chosen from the pop-up on A.fp5, a new (and thus duplicate and useless) record is create in List.fp5. What's up with that? How do I prevent it? I have a psuedo-stupid question. I'm using value lists for certain fields to reduce data entry errors. For instance, I have a value list containing counties, like "Lycoming" and "Clinton". My question is, when a user selects one of those choices, could I have it actually stored as a number? We have to do reports for the states that use codes for the counties, like clinton is 18, lycoming is 41. Thanks!

I have a portal where there are multiple fields that need to be nested in a sort. Example - Sort 1 would have Truck, Ship Via, Airport in Ascending order. Sort 2 would have Ship Via, Airport, Truck in Ascending order. I have a script in the related file that contains the records but can't get it to "stick" when I return to the portal page. Any ideas? I have an sales/inventory system which calculates totals, but now I need to provide a way to view subtotals by tour name in a portal. The "sales" file creates a record (thru an import) for every item everytime there is an event - they appear in a portal in another file as a spreadsheet to record sales. Each record has a serial # for the item, a date and a tour name. Totals are calculated thru a self-join relationship based on serial#. I figured a great way to get subtotals by tourname would be with a global and a calulation field in which the serial number appears if the TourName = gTourName, and then have a relationship based on this new field, but Filemaker …

hi, I'm working on a solution that holds a little data in the MAIN DB, and uses line_item db's to store other info. It's all working ok. The only problem i have now (and didn't figure out how to work around it) is that I want to create a list of all item in a related DB. Example: one line_items holds 'raw materials'. I want the users to be able to print a complete list of available items stored in the line_item DB, without actualy 'opening' it. What's the go? Is it just me.. (quite possibly) I have a value list based on a relationship. I also want the user to have the option of adding additional values. I dislike Pop-up Menu I think it's ugly - especially when that list can grow, I like using Pop-up List with its scroll bar. So can someone tell me why only pop-up menu will allow you to add 'other'. Pop up list gives you no added features. I could understand (maybe) check box, radio buttons not being able to add due to display reasons. But why can't menu and list pop-ups have the same feature?: grrrrr

I copied some buttons from some templates in the sample section, but now that I've spent hours working with Photoshop to personalize them (changing colors from blue to orange, which is my company graphic chart), the interface created is really a disaster when I navigate using the buttons as tabs. Even with the freeze option in the scripts. I use FM 5.5 and an Imac G3 Is that that the images created in Photoshop use too much memory. Is there another problem. What kind of application do some of you use to create their own buttons. Thanks

I'm building my new database using a Tab bar interface. Jumping from one file to another is so easy with this kind of interface, but it is difficult to determine if jumping from file A to file B should : - drive you to a related record or not. - drive you to a specific layout I thought of a mini transparent button placed on the lower part of each "button" of the tab that would allow the user to either go to a related record or simply jump to the file showing all records, but this would work in a single user (the user knows that this button exists) Are there some tips for building such an interface ?

I have a db with different classes different assignments listed, including the weight of the grade for each assignment. I have another db for specific students with a portal wherein, upon selection of the class title, the assignments related to the class fill in, as well as the related grade weight. NOW, I need to enter scores for each assignment in this student database and then calculate the appropriate grade based on the weight. I am lining fields up by the appropriate portal row, but I cannot seem to access lines or rows or fields in this portal to perform my calculations. I have created an invoices file for inputing and viewing customer invoices, using portals, and a line items file for printing the invoices for my customers. All of the fields are in my line items file and simply being viewed in my invoices file within the portal. This is similar to another question on this post but not exactly the same and that question wasn't answered fully anyway so here goes. What I'm trying to do is set up a search key field in the source file for a portal/relationship, which can be calculated to be something different each time I change a field in the Master. Is there any way to have the portal size vary depending on the number of records it contains? I know I can set the number of rows and that I can have a vertical scroll, but can I have the portal be 4 rows, for example, in one record because that record only has 4 related items, but the next record show 9? I'm creating a database centered around rock climbing. One of the conventions of rock climbing is a rating system that goes like this (depending on which system you use, try not to argue the merits of the actual rating system if you're a R.C., lol): 6 7 8 9 10a 10b 10c 10d 11a 11b 11c 11d 12a... and so on 'til 16d When I do a sort, it doesn't sort correctly because of the mixed number/text values of the rating sysetm. As it is possible to set a self relationship gHook(number from calc =1)::cHook (global number = 1) and as portal can be filtered and sorted, would it be reliable to only use portals to show the records in my layouts, keeping obviously the lists and tables for editing and printings. I have two related databases. For the sake of my NDA, lets call them A and B. each record in A has a unique id (AID) and has general information about an A. each record in B is tied to a particular A (matched by AID), and has more specific information. i'm doing a report in A, and want a portal that will diplay about a dozen fields from each B related to that A. Hi, I've been reading and reading but can't seem to find my answer. Perhaps I am going about this all the wrong way too!? I have a db with persennel records. Within it I have a portal to a training records db (there could be hundreds of training records per person) I get them to list just fine. Now I need field that shows if a person meets certain requirements by having, say, 4 specific trainings. I'd just like a "YES" or "NO" in the field. I tried the If function and it only looks at the first record in the portal. Perhaps I am going about this all wrong and there is a much easier way? Please, any help would be greatly apreciated. Is there any way I can have the "blank" or "new" record in the portal be sorted to the top of the portal? i.e. when you use portals, you can enter new data at the bottom of the list below your actual data. I would like this to default to the top when I open a particular layout, because the users will be adding a new entry every time they have to open that layout.

hi, I have a min db to work in and a few line_items containing client info and such. The portals all show what i want to see but... I'v emade a button on it to view a record in the portal,, but clicking that will open the line_item db, instead of showing it in the main db. I have a layout in the Main db where I can add new info to the line_items so thats now really the problem, just how to get info into the main db. I don't want my client to see the line_items... I have 3 databases - Contacts, Appointments, and Photos. Each Contact can have multiple Appointments, and for each Appointment, there can be multiple Photos. In the Contacts database, there is a portal that shows all of the appointments that have been scheduled for each contact. Is it possible to have a field display 1 of 3(or more) value lists depending on the value list choice in another field? I have a field named "Company" which is a pop up list of Car Companies for example. Ford Chevy Dodge I have also defined 3 value lists of the models of each companies cars. For example: Dodge Value list would include Intrepid, Ram, Caravan, Durango, etc. I want the corrisponding value list to show up in a field named "Model" depending on which car company I choose from the Company pop up list field. Scenario as follows - In FM file, select an item category from popup list. Hi, I would like to have a database where a drop down list will auto open a corresponding drop down list. EG list A will have a selection of product types - by clicking on a product type, list B will show the products contained within that product type (list A) By clicking on the product in list B, a complete description will appear in a fields layout. How to get this work? I want a conditional valuelist that is based on the input in a repeating field and takes data from a related file. Sure it works, except for that the valuelist does not update it's condition when moving to next repetition! Simply I have two repeating fields, one with artists and one with tracks. Related files is Artists and Tracks, master file is Albums. I've taken the Artists into a valuelists. Now when I pick one artist into the Artist field I want the Tracks valuelist to be conditionally based upon the Artist, so only tracks by that artist is shown. Be gentle.. I'm a newbie to this and the attached file is my first attempt at a portal!! First of all, all feedback on its design would be welcome. Basically the idea of this database is to feed in all information for incorporation of a new company including shareholders/directors. Once you have entered an ACN in the main data entry, entering this again in the shareholder region will copy info into screen. My problems are as follows: Adding shares is chunky and full of loop-holes. I have a form which displays a lot of Client information. It contains approx 15 fields and two portals (one 3-line and one 8-line). When I jump to FIND, it takes several seconds to bring up find. This isn't a scripted find, just regular one. It scans down the page in slow motion until it reaches the end, THEN jumps to field one to open fine mode. I've never seen anything so funky looking. I have no scripts attached, very basic standard form. No calcs, nothing that I'm aware of which would cause this behavior. Any suggestions on speeding up (and smoothing out) this process?

It has come to my attention by a User (me) that the color of layouts is important. I thought having the same color (consistency, you know) through all of my db's was better than having lots of different layout colors. Problem: When working between several dbs, even though the heading clearly shows which db I'm on, I will occasionally 'forget' which db I'm in (silly but true) because they're all the same color. I know I could leave the choices to the Users (using global containers for backgrounds), but I'm not sure I want to do that. I have 4 database files: Clients, Therapists, Service, Service Logs The error I get is "The relationship "Service" is not valid and must be corrected before this field can be modified" The service database holds each service that is done with a client. Hi, I have one database where you enter the date a session started. In another database I enter the date of the treatment. Scenario: Running a script that automatically duplicates portal records in a loop, based off whether a field "Continue After Break" is checked. The solution is a "Time Tracking" DB that allows employees to log their times against certain orders and jobs. Is there a problem with using the "auto-enter from previous record" option on a field in a portal? I have created a db where this option works fine. As the user creates a new record, the vendor field is automatically populated with the vendor from the previous record. However, when I use this db as a child table in a portal, the auto-enter behaves unpredictably. As the user creates a new child record, it populates the field with info from an existing record, but not always the immediate previous record. This produces unpredictable and frustrating results. Is there a way to create a value list of either all field names in the database or all fieldnames on a certain layout? I have tried using the FieldNames function [i defined a calculated field as FieldNames( "BargSurveys" , "" ) where BargSurveys is the name of my database], but this gives me no result. My problem is related to the number of rows in a portal. It seems I have to specify a finite number of rows in which to display related fields (I've always had the same confusion on how to handle repeating fields in this situation). Not sure if this one belongs here or in the Portal Forum.... I have a portal on my layout showing 20 rows, which is the maximum number of related records. For design reasons, I want to "split" the portal, i.e. have two portals showing 10 records each. Now obviously if I just put another portal on the layout, it'll show the same related records as in the first portal. I want to create a value list using a repeating field. The field is a date and is repeated twice (begin date/end date). I want to make a value list that concats the begin date and end date (i.e. 01/01/2002 - 01/15/2002) and then use the result as the choices in a popup list. Any way to do this?
