Hi All, Hopefully, one of you have done something similar to this. I have an online form that is registering students for placement exams at a university. For any date and time, a maximum of 30 students can register. When a given date and time exceeds 30 registered students, that date should be removed from the value list that holds the available dates and times. The thing is that I don't know whether that kind of capability can be facillitated over the web using CDML in combination with Java or JavaScript or if it is even possible at all. I have 2 portals with views into the same db, one which views sales and the other views orders. I'd like the sales portal to view only records with sales, and the orders portal to view only records with orders. Currently both portals display all related records for the original record. I have a calculated field in DB A that I am using as a value list in DB B. The DB B field is set up as a pop up field. When I go to the field to select a value the list pops up fine with the appropriate values BUT as soon as I select the value I want I get a dialog box telling me I can't modify the field. I vaguely recall that there is a need to put another field in one of the databases that acts as an "intermediary" or some such thing. TIA for any feedback.

I designed the layouts for a large system on a standard CRT monitor (PC). I have spent countless hours perfecting the user interface. I was running a test on my clients network and was horrified when I viewed my files on one of their flat panel monitors (PC). It looked terrible! It's almost as if the flat panel could not display the "depth" of the layout elements. My 3D elements look 2 dimensional. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is there a simple fix? Dear all, Here I am finally asking the question that bugged me now for some time. What is the benifit of pasting an image into a Global Container, rather than simply pasting the image on the layout? 1. An additional global field increases the db size. 2. You can resize the pasted image just like you would a field, etc. I know there must be a good reason, like access to the image, but I can't think of one. Thanks for your thoughts

My FM experience is someplace between beginner and intermediate. I've hit a stone wall with portals in developing a genealogy database. I'm using FM 4.1 on an iMac. I have 4 files: PEOPLE (serial#, name, birth and death dates for each individual); PEOPLE DETAIL (with fields for info on details of each individual); MARRIAGE (details of each marriage of each individual; and FAMILY (displaying how each individual is related to others). I have a portal with studentsnumers and an icon with letter send/unsend. When i click on the icon a letter is printed and the icon for that one student is set from unsend to send When i shift click on the icon the letters for al the students in this portal are printed and all the icons are set from unsend to send. I am trying to create a database to simplify a selection process to a specific product, which is displayed in a portal I have managed to make it work to two levels based on a relationship, but i need more scope, well at least 4 levels Product Type (5 Choices) Then by Manfacturer (Choices dependent on Product Type Selected) Then by Colours Available (Choices depend on both manufacturer and product type) This should narrow the final selction from the product database from 500 items to approx 6 Any suggestions on how to take this further. I don't know if this has been asked a lot or ever. I don't know what I would search for to try and find it. Here is my situation: I have three related tables: People (grandparent), Boats (parent), Results (child). In this database, a Person can own many boats, and a boat can have many results. No problem setting up the tables to have unique ID values (single user system) and relations to make that structure work. Here is the problem: In the Results table, I need to populate an ID field (foreign key) with a value from the Boats table (primary key). This is a problem that I run into with almost every data base I create. In my latest database I actually have 2 related databases. The first is "Clients" and is a basic contact manager. The second is "Policies" which holds all the policy information for all my clients (in case you haven't figured it out this is for an insurance agency). In my Client DB I have a button that creates a new policy. I have a main Invoice DB, but related to this I have an InvoiceDescriptionsDB. Related by Invoice number When someone raises an invoice, they may have many parts to the invoice which are created in the InvoiceDescriptionsDB. The InvoiceDB shows all of the descriptions for each invoice within a portal. How do I show a total amount - for all the parts - on the Invoice DB. I have noticed this several times but have yet found a solution, when switching between layouts one defined as form view and the target defined as list view, randomly the scroll bar becomes inactive preventing the user from scrolling down. They can use the page down key but I can't figure out the reason why the scroll bars freeze up at random. I have observed this on both mac and pc... Any ideas?

Everyone probably knows what this is regarding... running your solution at different resolutions. I see 3 options. What do you do? 1. Maximize all windows (looks horrible on my monitor - 1600 X 1200 at 22") 2. Restrict window sizes to 800 X 600 with script steps (640 X 480 you're out of luck) 3. Check resolution on start-up then have at it on designing dozens or hundreds of extra layouts to accomodate the solution at several different resolutions (time consuming and expensive for the client) What is the preferred method? Hello, could someone please help? I have a database with a value list that is based on a relationship, when I choose data from one value list (1) it automatically looks up data from another database and in the second value list shows all the data that relates to the data in value list(1). I have set up a button (N=1 & Y=2) that a user will check if the "Billing Address" is different than the "Contact Address". Right now the button is in place but isn't linked to any type of functionality. That is where you all can help me. As the default, I would like the "Billing Address" fields to mirror the "Contact Address" and the button to be set to "N" - then based on the user actively selecting the button to "Y", the address fields would clear for the user to enter the new information. Hi there, Just FYI, when duplicating multiple layouts, where the portal is based on different relationship, somehow it's not enouph to just double-click on the portal to change the relationship. You have to physically re-draw the portal, then specify the relationship that this portal is based on. At least I had to do it for my solution. My guess is that's the bug in fundamental programming of the object-oriented side of the FM. If anyone has any clues out there, please enlighten me. Biking days are here again.

2 databases related thru a ID#. Main database has portal linking to the second database. As it should, when I click in a blank portal field in the Main database, a record is created in the second related database with a matching ID#. Here is a twist...Is there anyway to click in a empty portal, and instead if it creating just one record with a matching ID# in the related database, can it create 8 of them. Reason I ask this is I almost always created 8 records thru the portal. I have read some place, printing problems with "Portal"... I have a new feature in my solution, I change repeating fields with a portal... The thing is: I have a list (2 rows) for each dataline for AirConditionning equipment, most customer can fit in one page... but with shopping mail and 250 units.... that can be a problem.... Hi, I have created a database in FMP and I have 2 pop up menus one is comany name and the other is the size of paper eg:a1,a2,a3,a4,a5 but the sizes are all different to each company. So the question is, is there a way of selecting a company name and it bringing up all the sizes that relate to that company that I have selected in the comany pop up menu box. Used to be a power user of FileMaker years ago, but since 3.0 have drifted off into part unknown which leaves me with a problem I cannot now easily solve in 5.0. Have created a pop-up list containg 30 items for ease of entry and to control search element criteria. I now find that two or more of the items in the list are required to show up in the field. I am using FMP 5.5v2 in OSX and have noticed on occassion that after entering an record in a portal file that the entry is invisible when viewed through the portal. I don't think I've ever come across this in OS9 versions. Example: Customer & Invoice files-after adding a new invoice through an invoice script, it is not seen in the portal from the customer file until after closing the customer record and reopening it as though the portal is not updating its contents until after the customer record is closed and re-opened.

I'm a new FM Developer and so my terminology won't be right at this time, but I'm working on it. What I would like to do is be able to have one screen where I put in a client's name and somewhere on the same screen will be a box of some sort where all the reports that have been submitted from him will show up without me having to go and hunt them down. Hi Folks, I'm setting up a school reporting system using FM 5.5 on our NT4 network, but I'm having a slight problem with the layout design. I need to be able to use the body part of the layout to place all of the relevant fields. Unfortunately, I've run out of pages on the layout (there are about 10). I think I know this can't be done, but here it is anyway: I have a bunch of valuelists that I store in a preferences file, where I give the user the ability to change the list contents by including the format option Edit... If I have to replace the preferences file because of an upgrade or major bug, there doesn't seem to be a way of transferring these valuelists to the new file. I know I can get them out with a Design function, but how can I put them back into the new file???

Greetings everyone. I'm currently working on a new FileMaker book (I work with a famous author) and I've been doing some development on projects which will be the basis of the book. One of my goals is pushing FMP development from a UI perspective further ahead. The goal: On both macs and pc's - Without using a button (transparent to the user)- Activate a script after selecting an item in a value list. Current Operation: I have a field layout as a button (also using an invisible button) activating a script. The field has a value list. When clicking on the field the value list appears as a pop-up menu, the script pauses for 1 sec and allows the capture of the value list item, which,automatically resumes the script to update another db, and return to the original layout. Help, I have 2 files: 1 called "Jobs" that contains specific job information. Including a portal to a file called "jobItems". No problem here. The other file is called "Invoice" and contains billing information for each job, also with a portal to the same file called "jobItems" where a user will check a box when the itam is invoiced. So, the 2 seperate files need to display the same portal. I guess this is a bug. But I have the strangest results with a value list in find mode. I have a relationship that is based on: a global field in database A a text field in database B As the value in the global field changes in A, the correct value list is shown (in database A) from the data in B. The value list works fine in find mode on fields that are in the current database but shows me a completely different value list on related fields. Hello Forgive me for asking such a simple question. But I just don't understand portal basics. (And further more I use a swedish copy of FM 4.1, headache...) I am planning a small database. Maybe no more than 50 records. Each record will contain something like a title, an abstract and keywords. Each abstract is, of course, uniquely connected to its title. But the keywords may (or may not) be related to more than one record. I see no upper limit to how many keywords each record may contain, though it's not likely that each record will contain more than 5 of them. We are using FM to run our real estate office including preparation of contracts of sale. A contract can have several "condition clauses" The contract clauses are in another file with a clause number. In the contract there is place for several clauses which the user enters a number for each and the assocaiated clause is shown on the contract. Problem is the user needs to know what clause number to use. There is probably an easy explanation for this, but it is keeping me up at night: I have a calculation field in one DB ("first_name" & "/" "computer_model") that is being used by a value list in another DB as a pop-up menu. It works fine until I update the first DB. The changes are reflected in the pop-up menu, but not in previously created records. I would like all previous records to update with the new information. Unfortunately the portal brings back several years worth of data. Ugh, I'm completely stuck on this value list problem. I have a value list which is in a file that acts as the middle of a many-to-many relationship. I want it to show only values which have not previously been chosen for one of the related files. I guess I misunderstood what a portal is an what a porta could do. I viewed a portal as another table (file) and that you could set a portal up as a table (sub-table) inside of a table and that one could then directly enter records into that sub-table. So far, I'm only able to use a portal to display related records. Is there a way to enter new records into a portal while it is being displayed on the main layout? What am I missing??? Thank you

Hi All: I'm sure this one is on the tip of my tongue... I have two fields: "Contact Type" which is located in a db called Contacts, and "Performing Artist" which is located in a db called "Bookings." In one layout of A, there is a portal to display/edit records of database B, and the field format of one of the fields in the portal is assigned as an pop up value list, and this value list is a long list, contains about 20 items. A selected portal in my invoicing db is printing sporadically or rather "on top" of the page hiding all of the line graphics behind the portal and extends down into the non portal area. I have been able to reformat the portal and it goes a way for a day and then is back the next. I can move the "infected" portal to the extreme right (off the page) and the invoice will print correctly. This has just started in the last 2 weeks along with an intermitent and sporadic bolding of characters within fields. can you have a portal within a portal by this i mean i have company database within which i want to show their orders (which is fine) done in a portal i can show all of their orders. Hi all, I need to know how many row there is in my portal. I seem to remember doing this somehow easily a couple of years ago... I was surprised to find that there is no such thing as Status(PortalRowCount). Can anyone recommend a method ? I could do it with a script but I swear I once got a calculation field to report the number of portal rows....I might just be missing something obvious... Is there a way to set a field to look up information from other fields, and yet still allow modification? Specifically I have a donor with names and addresses etc. I have fields for title, first1, last1, title 2, first2, last2. I want the data base to automatically enter Mr. and Mrs. George Smith, unless I know the donor prefers to be listed as The Smith Family, in which case, I'd hand enter that listing.

I would like to create a pop-up value list which is simply about a half dozen years to choose from, starting with next year, but changing each year depending on the date. For example, this year, the user enters the field and they can choose from 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998... but next year, the same field would supply six sequential year choices starting with 2004 and ending with 1999. Anyone know how I can do this in a value list? I assume I must select use values from a field, then create a calculation field and use Year(Today) but then what? I have a database where I want to be able to search several different types of documents-- faxes, memo, letters-- but want to display each in their own specific format. At the same time, I need an overview directory to display information by project, etc. regardless of format. Can I set the view to a given record by a variable (document type) or would I do better to have separate related files for each layout type? And if so, is there an easy way to implement a find across all of them using portals or the like?

I am working with two related files: Employees, which contains all general information about the employees, and Job Entries, which contains all of the job-related information for each employee (contract dates and renewals, position titles, department, manager, etc.). In my Employee file, I have a layout called "Job Entry-Update" that contains a portal to view all related job entries for that employee and allows the creation of a new entry to record contract renewals or merit increases. Hey Guys, I have a simple shopping site running. I have a field in a "shopping cart" db which displays ordered items and is populated by a value list generated by relationship from an "ordered items" db. However when someone adds two items to their cart (instead of adding it once and changing the quantity to 2), it will only display in the value list once, but will appear in the portal twice. I am using this method so I can generate an automated response email with the items they have ordered in it. Thanks in advance. John.

Hi guys, I am wandering if it's possible to view the "many side" of the relationship in the portal without normalizing the file into two files. What I mean is: I have a file called companies, which also has employees in it. I know this is not the right way to do things, but let's just say that's the situation. There are several employees in each company. Is there a trick with selfjoin to view all the employees per each company in a portal? Thank you

here is a strange request.. Im not sure even if im in the right forum.. Is it possible to show the contents of a web page in a container field? or open a window withing filemaker to show a web page.. I know we can use the open url script step but that just opens the browser with the URL specified in by a field.. We are trying to see if we could get a window within filemaker to do this Thanks Stu

Ok, I have two databases. One database has two main fields I'm working with SERIAL_NO and OWNED_BY. In another database I have two drop down boxes one that displays all the SERIAL_NO's from the one database, and one that displays all the OWNED_BY from the other. What I'm trying to accomplish... When I select an "Owner" from the OWNED_BY box I would rather it show me only the 20-30 serial numbers in the SERIAL_NO box instead of all of them. Meaning, I only see the serial numbers for the given "Owner" instead of every serial number. Can this be done? Thanks in advance! Nic

Hello I haven't been able to figure out sorting records in a portal based on a value list when defining the relationship. I want to sort the records in the portal on any field in the portal. Is that that what a value list is used for in that situation? If I don't specify which field to sort related records on, the portal always displays them in serial record order. I want them sorted by DueDate, CustomerName or DocketNumber. As well I would like to filter them based on the contents of one field. I am completely lost on this one. Thanks for your help.

If a certain value occurs in the child record, I need the parent of it do be duplicated, and a few fields changed. Unfortunatly I can't get over to the parent file to do this via a script. Right now i'm having to set a field that is accessible by both, and then search for it in the parent file and update. Is there an easier way? Thanks -j

Hi, I'm brand new to the group, so please forgive me if I commit any newbie errors! In FileMaker 4.x, I have "Field X" which uses a pop up value list that displays data from "Field 1" and also displays data from "Field 2" - In this case Field 1 the Company Name, Field 2 is a Customer ID number. I need the value list to sort on the Company Name (Field1) and place the Company Name in Field X when selected. I'm working on a customer database related to a time billing database. And in the time billing database I have a drop down box that has everyone's customer number in there that a person can select to pull there info from the other database. Is there a way that when a person selects the drop down box it shows not only the customer number, but the company name? But then when one is selected it puts only the customer number in the field? I have several portals on the same page. If I have a script that says go to Portal Row #1, it always goes to the top row of the first portal. How can I tell it to go to the first row of the other portals? I have used several combinations of Go to Field... and Go to Portal Row... script steps. It always goes to the correct field but then goes to the correct row on the wrong portal. This is very confusing. Any suggestions?

I am having a problem with a checkbox list. Has anyone else had this problem with FM 5.5? There is an established checkbox list which has always worked. It lists different committees that a person can be on. One of the committees changed its name and got new members. My office assistant unchecked all the old members of the committee. Then she went in under the Define Value List and changed the name of the checkbox to reflect the new name of the committee. Lastly, she checked the new members of the committee. The checkmark does stay on the record. However, now when she does a search she gets the message that "no records are found". If you go to …

I have a database which has a field with a pull-down menu with a very long list of schools that comes from a pre-defined value list. For reasons too long to go into in my short post, I cannot use field validations anywhere in my database so I have been forced to validate each field with a script. I have been using techniques such as "not IsBlank (myfield)" or "Length (myfield) = 12", etc. and it has worked without any problem. Hello Everyone, I have a small problem which mabey someone can help me with. I have a database with 6 layouts. Layout 2 has over 100 pictures of different products, Each product has a value list of the different models of that product. Everything is working great except for one thing, the value lists. What the end result should be is that the person selects a product on layout 2, then it takes them to layout 3 with the correct value list for that product. I've tried using a calculation with ValueListItems. But when I try to select an item it says this field is not modifiable. Is there anyway I can do this without creating over 100 layouts? Hi Everyone, I've encountered a strange problem with the solution I've developed for our small office. There are about 10 users and we are running Filemaker Server. On some of the PC's, some of the layouts with portals are washing out with a ghost mirror image of themselves. The buttons still work if you know where to click them. I can't seem to figure out what's causing the problem. It doesn't happen all the time but sometimes it practically washes out the entire screen. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? I'm building a FM runtime and I can't decide if I should build it in Kiosk mode or use a Menu Plug-in. Kiosk mode has some inherent problems. On a windows machine it does not allow the user access to the desktop unless it's through explorer. It also takes away the windows menu bar along the bottom of the screen. I'm just thinking that Kiosk mode might tick off some users because it does not allow full windows functionality, or at least the normal stuff. Menu Plug-ins seem like a nice idea, it's just that I'm a little nervous about Plug-ins and runtimes in combo. Bottom line... The standard FM menu items in a runtime are useless to the normal use…
