Sorry to say, but no. The popup list size is set by FileMaker and isn't editable by developers. This includes both the width and height of the list. I can conceive of a workaround to increase the width of the list by adding spaces to the end of the value list items, either in the custom value list definition area or by adding a second field with spaces in it if the value list is based on a field. Don't know if it would work, but you could try it. Chuck

I a trying to write a script that will simply create a new record in a portal. The portal is a payment database that records payments made by date, type, and amount. To save time keying, I want to use buttons that say 'cash payment', the script would create a new record in the portal row, then add the date, the type, and simply ask the user to enter the amount. Maybe I designed this wrong....I have a database of survey results. 10 questions (fields), each pulling from a value list (SA, A, N, D, SD) displayed as radio buttons. I would like to calculate the number of responses per field, e.g. for question 1, how many respondents answered SA versus A versus N, etc. It would be easy if I had 50 fields (1SA, 2SA, etc.) but it seems like there should be a way to calculate the count of Field 1 equalling SA, etc. Any thoughts? I'm trying to find a way to perform two actions in one script: Action 1(Already works): Search for all records w/in a specific date range and that contain a certain critera within each records portal. Action 2(The problem): Once I know how many cases there are that meet this critera I want to know how many of the portal rows within each case have a certain criteria. I actually need the number (i.e. portal for record 1 contains 5 occurances of a particular word, record 2 contains 1, and so on for each record in the set I've found). There is probably a much easier way to do this than what I'm doing so any help is appreciated.

Hi Alison You don't need to write a script. You can use SPECIFY BUTTON to simply GO TO RELATED RECORD (same relationship as your portal) A button placed in the row should pose no problem - a nice way of keeping your portal clean is to make the Executive Name field the button - therefore clicking the name field will take you directly to that record. You only need to place the button in the top row (in Layout Mode) and it will repeat for every portal row in Browse Mode. Please. The first (and only) time I opened that thread it took three minutes to download all the picts. If you must show off, please create highly compressed GIFs of your screenshots. 166Kb for one screenshot is more than a little ridiculous. I just took a screenshot of this screen (800x600, 24-bit), and it came to just over 200Kb. Running thru Photoshop and using the "Save for Web" feature, at 32 colors it looked great and took up only 27Kb. We don't all have broadband yet, so please be considerate. Thanx.

On file A: use to display/edit multi records of file B: how to do it? make a relation between file A and file B, then use portal to display multi records of file B on file A. so far so good. I created a portal to keep track of clients who check in. Each time a client checks in, a date and time are logged. Is there a way/trick to make 2 fields scroll together? The issue concerns a main file and 1 related file (1 on 1 relation). I need to display 2 of the related text fields next to each other in the main file, the difficulty is that the height of the text entries vary(together). I know I can put a vertical scroll bar on text fields but I would like to have the 2 fields scroll together. I may well be looking the wrong way, I'm open for any suggestion.

Hi again! I'm working on a FM 3.0 database for a small business. When I design the layout and look at it at 100% magnification, it looks fine. However, one of the users may want to look at it at 150% or 200%. Testing at that level of magnification, many of the items move a bit. It's not enough to throw everything off, but it is a bother. I've locked all items in the layouts, it still happens. I'm on a 400 MHZ TiBook, running OS 9.2. Any advice, or is this too petty of a problem and should I just let it go and hope no one else notices? Thanks! Russ Conte

Help! I'm up to my rump in alligators and I need to create a "splash screen" in FMP Developer. It will hold some graphics and have a 10 second delay before switching to another layout. I would like it to be a custom window (about index card size) with no scroll bars and be centered on screen. I know it's possible and the alligators are getting closer and nipping... Another puzzling one. Why does my system start to summarize on a related file when I sometimes change layouts, even when none of the summary fields, or even related fields at all, are on the current layout ? This phenomenon does not appear to have any pattern to it. All files are open all the time.I've even checked to see that the file that starts summarizing is not open in a layout that contains the summary fields. Is it anything to do with the start up script as I changed this recently? I do seem to get the summarizing (which is time consuming and irritating) on start up. There are a whole bunch of ways to do this depending how your database is set up. The most general approach is to have an override field that you can manually enter the tax amount into. If it's empty the tax calculates the normal way, and if it contains a value, then that value overrides the normal calculation. So, you change your tax calculation formula to: Case(IsEmpty(TaxOverride), ...insert your original tax formula here... ,TaxOverride) To make it look more professional, you can un-check the "allow entry into field" option from the original calculated field, and superimpose this field directly over the TaxOverride field. I've been able to figure out how to display a portal based on two fields using tech knowledge dbase file 104553... however, i was hoping I would be able to add new records based on the two fields...but because the relationship is based on a calculation, I cannot... I have a database that has about 8 fields and I once someone enters the date and vendor, reference number... I've got a setup with the following 3 files, Companies, Contacts and Orders. Contact records contain a Company-ID key. Order records contain a Company-ID and Contact-ID key. Currently I'm showing all Orders for a particular contact in a portal on a Contact-layout. The idea is to show all Orders for the Contact's Company on a Contact-layout so that you can easily see the Orders booked on other Contacts for the same Company. Hi, hope you can help me. I have a portal in a orders dbase which shows files from another dbase (films), I have a field which is called film id and a relationship to the films dbase via film id. I want to put in the film id in the portal and it will show all the details of that film in the portal. My problem is I need to add more than one record for a film on an order - I have put a tick in allow creation of related records, but it keeps repeating the last film id that was put in. Hello, I have one file that contains items, and another one that contains customers. The customers can have a lot of items. An item can only have one customer. So I've set it up so that you choose a customer in the items file, and in the customer file you can display all items that have the current customer. But when I change an item to belong to a different customer, this is not updated in the customer db. How do I update this? thanks!

Hello all - I've been working with FileMaker Pro 4.1 for years and have never seen this problem. First some background: Running FMP 4.1v3 and FMP 3 Server (on NT) Problem client is Windows 2000 Pro SP2, Dell Latitude C610 on a port replicator with external monitor Recently Installed Office XP First of all, FMP seems to take a long time to boot. My database files have also lost most of the background colors in the layouts. The biggest problem however is that the text in the fields appears garbled after editing or performing finds. Ok. this is a hard one (I think). I have a self-related portal for currency of transaction in invoicing DB (US$ or CA$). I have 'CAD' and 'USD' in globals and used as the primary key to itself, and 2 relations for them. This works fine but I have to be able to show transactions from a date range. I can't think of a way to make a calculation field do this, since it has to be a range of dates. ideas anyone?

I need to know, however how to filter a portal in the invoicing system, AND to sort it. This is the problem: I have an inventory file, with an article ID. The articles in the inventory file have unique serial numbers (within the same article number) and a "best before" date. Is it possible to add a second (or more) condition to what you see in a portal window? Can you have information displayed in a portal that are based on two fields? The first by an invoice number and the second by a category. In other words, I would just like to show records that have the same number and category. I have a field (List of Suppliers) that I use as pull down list in a web search interface. I have also allowed editing of this field, however the edited fields always give an error message from the search page. The index still contains the original information and not the updated information, while the field values contain the updated information. Good morning - here i go again On my invoice screen - I have a portal set up to enter my items being purchased. The commission amount is calculated from the information in the portal rows. My delimna is - if I have them enter a FIN(Finance Charge) or ADJ (Adjustment) in the Item Code box of the portal - I do not want this line item to be included in the Comission Calculation. I have the Commission Calulation set up - If(lineitem:item code ="FIN" and "ADJ", 0, SUM(lineitem:item cost). This seems to work for the first line of the portal. I have a timesheet dbase where I have placed a comment field for employees to place any comments on a particular client for public viewing...the comments field will be broken down by a type field (design, install, maintain) i have created a portal that sorts the comments so the records that have data in them will show at the top. I have invoicing database that contains a portal to items purchased. Since the store does US and Canadian dollars, each item has a price in both currency in the inventory database. I have the user select which currency for the transaction in the invoice and the lineItems database has a field for the current price, which is auto entered calculated number (price depends if its on sale and its currency) from the inventory DB. My problem is that, usually on the first portal row, since its a auto enter, the lineitem doesn't have the invoiceID to check for the currency or itemID, so it defaults. Hello all, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a technique or plug-in that will solve my problem. I need FileMaker to perform "spreadsheet" like calculations in the following way using relations and portals: DatabaseA - Customer List DatabaseB - Each record represents End of Month total sales. I have a pulldown with values assigned to names. When they are selected and entered in the field in the database it has an extra blank space under the value. I can manually go in and delete these but prefer not to. When I display the value on a webpage it displays it with a space at the end which is not good if you are trying display a period at the end. Hi, I have a script which loops through all the portals and inserts a calcultated result if the rel files date = todays date. When performing, it will not get off the first portal and go to the next, however if I replace the "insert cal result" with say "set field" or anything else it will work. I have found that I need to use conditional value list for my problem. The example that I found consisted of two files. However, I have only one file with the same two fields as the example, Category and Item. I followed the example and I got a bit confused because they were using two files and I am only using one file. In the example from www.databasepros.com (I conducted a search on conditional value list), the two files they used were Menu and PopUp. In the Menus file, the only two items were Category and Items. I'm trying to produce a pop-up list to enter the ID of a record from a related file of people's names. These IDs are not very informative so I'm entering the persons name, calculated from surname and first name fields, as the second field on which I wish to sort (I've concatenated surname and first name in that order). From the mouse fatigue department: Most of my users are comfortable with keyboard shortcuts and would like to be able to use them to shift between windows in FileMaker 4.1 (Macs and PCs). Does anyone know if this is possible on the Mac? On the PC, I do the following: Alt-W brings up the windows menu. Use the arrow keys to move up and down the list of windows, and the enter key to select. I've tried to find a similar combo on the Mac, such as AppleKey + [`], which rotates windows in IE or Netscape, but nothing I've tried produces this effect in FileMaker 4.1 on the Mac. Hi there all, I'm sitting here going crazy trying to figure this one out! Can anyone tell me how to achieve the following? I have a database called "A" which contains all the serial numbers for any item ID in another db called "B". What I have done is in a third database called "C" made a portal that sees these serial numbers. In FM 5.03, when accessing and copying data from a third file that has several records with the same matching field, it copies the values from only the first related record, yielding unexpected or inaccurate results. (Users Guide Chapter 8-6: "Important: When the same value exists in the match field in more than one record on the related file, FMP copies the value from only the first related record, ......" I've inherited a Filemaker database originally created in Filmaker 2.0. Its been converted to Filemaker 5.0 but several value listsare currently lookup lists referencing a separate database field. The only thing in these separate databases are one field of values. I'd like to convert these to custom value lists instead and eliminate some of the databases I'm serving. Any issues I should be aware of? Will old records maintain their current information after this switch? Thanks for any help. Erik

This really has to be simple to do, I'm missing something.... I have two files: Organizations and Individuals and a join file OrgInd. In the Organizations file each organization has a serial number (OrgSN) and in the Individuals file each person has a serial number (IndSN). So the join file just is a list of OrgSn and IndSN. There is a portal in the Organization file that lists all of the people associated with it and one in the Individuals file that lists all of the Organizations that the person belongs to (and the obvious relationships between the SN's in each file so that the portal works). I'm usually looking for help, but I thought I'd pass on a tip I actually worked out myself ! When designing a layout with a column of field boxes, it is quite tricky to line up the text labels with the fields. Using the arrange facility and 'distribute space' doesn't work too well. Try this. Create your field boxes and line them up (technique only works when field boxes are equal height and equally spaced). Then put all your labels in one text box, with a carriage return between each. Simply then change the line spacing from format until the labels and field boxes line up. Quite quick and neat. Unfortunatley only works with screen layouts. Printed outp…

I use filemaker to send our email versions of proposals. I would like to do the following: Filemaker composes an email in my email package; to, subject, message - all from filemaker fields on that particular record. This is currently done by hand, ie., a series of copying and pasting between applications. I also want to indicate in an 'attachement name' field the filename of an image I want to attach from a predefined 'drop folder' on my hard drive. Hi everyone, Question from a FM Newbie... Is there a simple way (or any way) to have a pop-up window that, when you select an item from its list, will load a piece of data in another field. Hi, I have this portal that holds records for 2 companies, say co A and B, I have been trying to get records for one company(only) that would show in onother portal. i have created a self relationship with a global field that holds records for both,the global field relates to a calculation field(text)that contains the name of company.(and created a script-set field(global field,"A") Problem is this is not working..its just producing strange results. I have a job ticketing database that uses a self-join relationship to list all previous tickets for the client. (ClientID=ClientID) I would like to indicate which ticket the user is on by highlighting it within the portal by using a calculation to "get" a highlight graphic. Is there a way to do this without requiring a script to "mark" a record. I would like it to be based completely on calculations so when the user clicks through the records the highlight moves up or down in the portal. I have a Part Entry file and an Assemblies file. An intermediate file, AssemblyPartJoin, allows me to enter multiple parts per assembly through a portal in Assemblies. In Part Entry, I have a drop down list that shows all of the assemblies that each part is contained in, with a button next to the menu that performs a script to search the Assemblies file for the record matching the assembly in the drop down list. I am trying to Substitute Value Lists in real time? I have three pulldown lists in a row -One for Month -One for the Day of the Month -One for the year I want the "Day of the Month" pulldown list to switch to an appropriate value list that only has the correct number of days for the selected month. I setup a secondary file with a field named "Days" and I created 31 indexed records with the data 1 thru 31 in the records. I have a report that lists invoices by their payment method (Mastercard, Visa etc.) with a sub totals for each method. That all works fine but it seems (once i've sorted it etc.) that it only showing one of the methods and only shows all the headings in Preview mode. I would like to not have to use Preview mode. I have one database file (indiv_master.fp5) that is related to three other database files (indiv_2002.fp5, indiv_2001.fp5, indiv_2000.fp5), with relationships based on the same key for all four databases - and each relationship is named the same as the three database files without the .fp5 (example - indiv_2002).... I am wondering if anyone knows a way around the following problem....I have found a way to avoid getting the "So-and-so is modifying this record" message when clicking into a portal while another user is also clicking on a record in the same portal. I did this by creating a separate record for each user. The only remaining time I get the "....is modifying this record" is when someone is scrolling the portal, not even selecting a record in the portal, and another user tries to scroll the same portal. It is very aggravating for myself and my users. Especially for me since I have them on totally different records, but dealing with the same portal.

Hi Forum, I hope you can help me with this problem, I have 2 tables "Films" and "Orders". On my orders table I have 8 fields where you can put in the film id and the info will appear as we sometimes have to send out more than 1 film (I had to create a relantionship 8 times). What I wanted to do is have a portal in the films layout that could show where this film had gone etc.., but in the portal I can only put the 1 set of fields from 1 relantionship not the 8. I've got multiple portals which relate to a scheduling database. Each portal shows what is scheduled to be printed on what day. This much works fine. If you change the date or any other data in the portal item, the change is reflected. However, what I'd like to do is put buttons in that allow the user to click a "+" or "-" to move the item forward or backward by a day. Unfortunately, once a button is clicked, it somehow locks itself to the record first modified, even if that record is now in another portal! What have I done wrong? thanks, Stanley

It maybe that my file structure is completely wrong, but I need to figure this out and change my file structure if necessary. Here's what I have: 3 files - Events, Lists, and Notes For every event there multiple lists For every List there are multiple notes I have a portal in Lists that displays 2 fields from Notes. The portal is based on the relationship List_ID=::List_ID(in Notes). In this portal I need to be able to display all Notes records for the event, not just the notes for the current list. I have several databases: Clients, Expenses, Invoicing, etc... I would like to create a portal in each database which basically brings up the client names with the any given text string entered into a global text field in the non client database. However, I only seem to be able to execute a search via script. How do we control the size of a window at server level i.e so all the clients windows size can be defined to open to a consistent desired size?
