One database, one field called Project Name, 6 records: 2 of the records have the Project Name of ABC 1 records has the Project Name of EFG 3 records have the Project Name of HIJ I created a value list that looks at the Project Name field, so the value list contains: ABC EFG HIJ Is it possible to take the contents of the value list, and place them in a repeating field so that the first repetition contains ABC, the second repetition contains EFG, and the third contains HIJ? I want to create a calc that looks at the first repetition and tries to match it with the contents of of the Project Name field.

am using Instant Web publishing in Filemaker v 5.03 with the v 5.06 patch applied. I've got one master table and three portals on the layout. Can this be done? Once _any_ records are added - either in a related field or a master record (Personnel) , the related (portal) records in the layout begins to become uneditable. The master table can still be edited just fine. If you suggest that I just use three different layouts, that would be okay too, as long as I can get rid of the related record editing problem. With some good advice from this board I finally got my purchase order database up and running *correctly* by using a portal for the line item data. Now my problem is getting it to print multiple pages of the PO if the number of line items exceeds the # rows visible for each page? In other words, I set up a template for the printed PO, with a Header (customer info), a Body (portal to the line item DB), and a Trailing Grand Summary (to calculate a total cost for the line items). I set the portal to show 13 rows, and regardless of the number of items I enter in the entry screen, the printed PO will only print a max of 13 rows. How can I get it to print on a second (or th…

Using FMPro 5.1 here on a network, A patient database has over 21,000 records and close to 40 templates that I've set up. The administrative's assistant's computer (using Win98), has a list field that makes her scroll down one long vertical list of names whereas on the other computer (using Win95), when I click on that field, the whole list shows up in columns across the whole screen making it much faster to select an item vs scrolling down. Can the Win95 display be duplicated on the other machine?

One thing I've always found troublesome and time consuming was making all my fields be align and have space distributed evenly. Say I'm making a customer database that has 20 fields, mailing address, names, contact info and the like. Then have them all grouped in different areas (addresses all in one area, phone numbers in one) separated by horizontal lines or something like that. To align them I'd use the T-square or the 'align by...' command, and use the same for distribution of space. I have problem to get my portal to work. Db1 (orders) are related to db2 (products) Db1 related to db3 (line_items, storing items from orders) Db 4 (prices) I made a portal showing records from db3 (line_items) and I look up a product with a code and this works fine. But now I need to add one more db that holds information about prices for this product. I want a pop-up list showing available prices for this product inside the portal. I have 3 databases: Staff, Items, and Transactions. The Staff file contains information about staff members (obviously) such as Staff Name, and a serial number that is used for relationships. The Items database contains information about things that can be assigned to staff members, such as a mailslot, a nametag, and a phone number. Each record in the Items database contains a serial number, the item name, and item type. The Transactions database is used to link the one-to-manys between the Staff and Items database. Hello, I have a price history database related to a product database, that I've a portal showing the price history on the product master, and that portal is sorted by date, so most update price should always on top. The problem I facing is I want filemaker to compare the latest price and the second latest price (the 1st and the 2nd row of portal), I know how to get the latest price by calculation, but it seems no way to retrieve the price on second row. I know it could be done by script, but I hope it could be automatically based on calculation field. Please help! Thanks in advance! damon

I'm having troubles with a related value list with calculations. I used a self-join and a related value list to create a pop-up menu that lists all the names for that particular ID number (the ID is not unique). Works fine if the value list references a text field. However, if the value list references a calculation, then the results get screwy. Sometimes, they show up. Sometimes, they don't. Even odder is that it seems if you start with certain letters, there isn't a problem. For instance, anything starting with "t" seems to work. See the attached file as an example. I am working on a db with relational files two levels deep, ie. the first db relates to second db which then relates to a third db. Fields from the second db are displayed in the layout for db 1 within a portal. I would like to be able to update fields in the third db from the interface in the first db. However, the key between dbs 1 & 2 is different than the key between dbs 2 & 3. I can figure out how to display the fields from db 3 in db 1 (using calc fields in db 2 and then adding those calc fields to the portal) but I can't update them. In my DB, in list view, I would like to add a field in the header that would the record i selected in the line items appear bigger (for telephone number for instance) Is it possible ? I use the "highlight feature" for my layouts in list mode, but is it possible to do this is portals. For today, everytime I put the cursor into the portal, all fields (not empty) are highlighted with the color of the backround I set, even if I selected the alternate color background option. When I have other portals in the layout, all portals are highlighted when I put the curso in one of them.

In my main database I have a portal. If I go to a particular record there are 30 line items in the portal. If I do a find, for example, to only show the ones where a field = yes, I still get all 30 items (there are only 5 the field = yes). I could do a layout where the portal is based off a relationship where I have a global field in the main file and the =yes field in the related file. Then when I choose yes in the global field only the records where field = yes are displayed. Could this somehow work in some way like above, but maybe I would have 4 global fields. Depending what the user selects in the 4 fields, would then create the relationship thus showing on…

How can one populate a drop down value list based on portal data (entries) in a related file? Is this possible? Basically I have one file containing departments and another file containing employees with a relation :departments. In the department file I have a portal that contains employees from each department. In a Third file I would like to make a drop down containing the names of employees in one particular department. I don't know if I'm stratching portals' abilities here, but here's what I want to do: I have a large all-inclusive file "Employees" with all company's employees and their attributes. There are many companies, each with one or more employees. Employee's id is always a concatination of company# & employee#. I've set up a database of inventory, and I'm trying to find the top 200 selling items. I can sort by "items sold year to date", as an example, but I want to limit the list to only 200 records total. I don't know how to do this without going manually to record # 201 and then performing a find of all records smaller than "X" qty sold YTD, and deleting those records, and then printing out my report. I currently have a button that when clicked on runs a script to create a new portal row and auto enter certain data. Then the user can go to the portal row and finish changing the rest of the field data. I want to make sure that the user uses the button to create new protal rows. But as it stands, since the fields in my portal are editable, this means that the user could also go to the bottom empty row and start entering the data there, essentially by-passing the create button. Is there a way to avoid this...to make it where a new portal row can not be created unless it is done thru the button. LR

Help! I am a complete FM novice and have managed to pick up the basics very quickly. But i am making a quiz using FM and am stuck. All the questions are multiple choice with three choices which i have used radio buttons for, each question is on a new layout linked to the next with a button and script. what i want to know is how can i give the correct answer from each question a value of one and the incorrect answers a value of 0 and then have a total at the end of how many they got right!!

I currently have a contacts database that uses value lists to designate the category the contact is a member of. So it looks like this: At the top of my contacts database, I have a row of checkboxes that is one value list for categories such as Personal, General, Press, Client, etc etc. Under each of those values there are sub type value lists (i.e. print and web under press). This layout is starting to seem a little sloppy and I'm wondering if anyone has a better suggestion for categorizing contacts. One contact must be able to fall under several categories.

At first I want to excuse for my bad english. I have one file with list of jobs, I would like to find all jobs for a certain customer and make invoices for them. I wold like to select multiple jobs from that list (using checkboxes) and include them in invoice, and mark those jobs somehow so when I do another search those jobs don't come up because they are already invoiced. i have set up 5 db (graphic inventory, graphic orders, line items, project info & vendors) we need to set graphic inventory & orders for use via the web (using IWP). I've set up Web Companion & sharing but the layout that shows up via the browser is all wrong or if I go to edit via browser the correct layout shows up but some for the fields are missing or placed incorrectly or both. I am creating a field that requires morse code input, but i can't seem to find the right characters to use. I'm quite new to pc's (been on the macs too long) and i am looking for a good sized bullet point and a thick dash. I don't want to use special font sets in case my end users don't have these. I try to copy data (from a field in a portal) to the next record in the same portal, but I can't get it to work... Example: I have a portal with an overview of items in stock. The last record in the portal shows the latest update from the items in stock (cNewTotal). I like to have new portalrecords showing the latest 'in stock' number in a number field (InStock). I use a layout that contains either my sale price and my purchased price. I would like to mask the purchased price because some clients (impressed by FM Database?) are constantly looking to my computer and layout while I register their orders... I actually masked the field with a colored badge that I put on the field itself, so that I must click in the field to have access to the datas. But even when I click in any part of the layout, or while executing a script, the badge disappears. The solution I found so far is to use a color for the text that makes it difficult for someone to read...even for me ! Is there another solution ?

Right Brain doesn't seem to be getting as much traffic after the forum re-org... but here's another query... What have you all found more effective for your users: To have fields to select all the contents on entry, or just put the cursor at the end? Do you tend to go with one way or the other for a whole layout? or app? Or do you tend to make different choices based on the contents of the field? I keep running across dbs that have all fields and items locked. For the life of me, I can't understand why. When I go to layout I WANT to move things and that's why I go to layout. I suppose that, once something is positioned *for sure* exactly where you want it, you might want to lock it; or if someone else might be messing around in layout that could accidently move something, but ... are there other reasons? I find it irritating to constantly have to unlock an item to move it? Is there something else I'm just not getting?

I try to get this work, but it seems pretty complicated ... I like to show -in a 'self related' (timesheet)record- a portal with a list of records from the EmployeeID that is currently active in the browse mode. Besides data validation (covered in my other thread), what other techniques do you all use to improve data accuracy? Background I just finished importing data from our prior six databases into my one new one in FMP. In doing so, I found hundreds of data errors. Some I fixed automatically. Others I simply detected and generated error reports so that we can go back and manually fix them. Some of that error detection was done with checks that can be mapped to validations. But a lot of the rest was done by comparing duplicate or overlapping data for consistency. Now that I have everything in one database, the redundancy is gone (good), but the ability …

I have three files, well actually more than that, but these three are the pertinent ones. Parts - Data on everything I buy, build, or sell Inventories - The different inventories that parts can be found, built or shipped from. Part Location links - Links Parts to inventories. I have two value list questions: First, a formatting problem that I'm beginning to suspect can't be solved: My value lists, in pop-up lists, are displaying without enough space between each line, and the top bit of the text is getting cut off in each line, making it difficult to read. I've tried to play with the paragraph formating of the field, but nothing has any effect on the display of the list. Is this just a bug? I have a text field called buildings in a file called buildings that contains four records. The value of buildings for the four records is: Primary Intermediate Junior High High School When I make a value list based on the contents of this field, I do not like the fact that when I go to use this value list in another file in a popup menu, the items are in alphabetical order. I'm using FM 5.5 on Win 98SE. Does anybody know why popup lists don't close after a user has selected an item? It can't be anything on the layout, because I created a new one with only 1 field. The list remained on the screen after I selected an option. Its not a windows bug, since I've never had this happen with any other software. Any clues?

It was a bit weird at first compared to Access, and there are a few things that it doesn't do that I wish it would (like conditional formatting and event triggers), but I'm getting the hang of it. I have a solution that requires what I call a shrinking value list. I am instituting IP based printing at my school district. All the printers in a particular subnet have the same IP address except the last entry in dotted decimal format. In other words, printers in subnet 80 would all have one of the following IP addresses: 10.121.80.220 through 10.121.80.254 This is a total of 35 different IP addresses. I have a main database that contains business address information of on it. There is also a portal that displays names associated with the business. I want to print a form letter to each of the names in the portal with the appropriate business address on each letter. Right now I can only print one letter of the first name of each business, no matter how many names are associated with it. Hi, I am trying to summarize selected items from a value list that uses check boxes. I need to summarize on the selected items in a field that shows the data left to right separated by comma's and not paragraph returns. See example below. This seems very simple but I cannot resolve it. Reasonably new to Filemaker. We have a portal which has a button and text field in the header. The button just opens a related file. When entering data all is fine for the fields etc but the open button on the left is only visible on the top entry not any of the others. The button is 'hidden' behind the portal as the hand appears when you pass over it. I have brought the button to the front but the top one appears why not the others as lines are added? We have a scheduler built into our database but the key is to make it a proper appointments style calendar with a pop up alert to notify about meeting etc. Maybe this isn't practical. At the moment we are exporting to the palm calendar software. We use Quickmail in the office which I want to get rid of but Entourage seems to be the best free option on the client side and we are going to use the calendar in that. Do anybody have any ideas. Do ya'all feel it's necessary to provide an EXIT button on every layout. After all, isn't that what the windows 'X' is for? I plan on having buttons or bars to allow Users to go BACK to previous menu (or main menu) but an EXIT FM? Is it really necessary?

I have a contact file in which I would like to show a relationship between contacts. These could be family members, business etc. I have tried creating a relationship with a field ContactID to ContactIDGlobal, where ContactID is a serialized number and ContactIDGlobal is a Global field. I need help in creating a user defined value list summary at the end of a report. I am a film composer and am creating a database that tracks pieces of music I write for a given film. Each record in the database is a cue or singular piece of music. Within the data base there is a user defined value list that allows me to enter different categories for each of the pieces of music (i.e. suspense, action, love, etc). Hi there, I got a form layout with a few global fields and a portal derived from a different global field relation. User "abc" entered his cursor in to one of the global fields. At the same time I tried to click on the portal and got the following error: "abc is modifying this record. You cannot use it until abc is finished" ( but at the same time I can enter into the same global field user abc is in) There are no enterable fields in the portal but some of them are buttons. I am using a value list from another file with the ID as the first field and the name as the second field. I want the ID to appear because when chosen, the ID fills in a series of other fields in the file. However, if I try to sort by the second field, the value list gets all weird, it sorts some alpha but leaves the ID in front of some. If it sorts by the second field, no ID populates the field either. How do I keep the ID as the first field so that it can populate but sort by the second field? I tried a filtered relationship but that doesn't seem to work because my fields are not indexable. I also tried a couple calculations. Any help would be awesome here!

Hi there, I was just wondering how to do this best. I have a pop up menu that uses a value list based on a field from another file. When the values come up they are in alphabetical order. How do I get them to come up in an order defined by myself. I tried numbers in front of the items but it just came out as 1 - First Item 10 - Tenth Item 2 - Second Item And so on... Hello all, I'm trying to figure out how I can get a calculating field to look at the rows in a portal and compare them to find the highest value in a given field. Then the calculating field should display that highest value. To further complicate it, I only want to include certain rows - the rows to look at are marked with a "1" and the rows to ignore are marked with a "0". (The problem I am trying to solve involves looking at which activity completed by a given person within specific dates involved the most number of hours - if that helps!) - I'm stumped! Is there a way to test if you're in the empty portal row? the portal row for adding records? OR, is there another way to solve this problem... Most my files support "notes"... a portal that has three fields in each row... Date the note was entered, User that entered the note, and the Note itself. Most my files support "notes"... a portal that has three fields in each row... Date the note was entered, User that entered the note, and the Note itself. The Notes are sorted by Date, descending... so the most recent note is first, and the oldest note is last. Thus, when you add a note, it will naturally be inserted at the top of the Portal. But the blank row you click in is at the bottom of the Portal. The user will find it non-intuititve to go to the bottom to type in a record that belongs at the top. I am attempting to design all of my db's utilizing Pop-Ups across the top. The method I am reviewing is Cobalt Sky's Layout Menu. It appears to consist of one LayoutName text field, two globals and a calculation. I want a series of buttons across the top of every layout in every db for User navigation. Example: Home, Clients, Staff. Then, within Clients, the 'menus bar options would be 'Billing, Reports, etc. I am considering the differences between Pop-Up Lists, Pop-Up Menus and Drop-Down Menus. I've searched everywhere and I just don't understand this. This is what I want to accomplish: I have a main DB that tracks jobs. I have one field for project manager (project manager) I have one field (due date) I have one field that is a value list (open, in progress, done, hold) I have other fields for job number, project lead, project description, etc. I would like to have a Value List that shows: Job number / Description based on the job being 'overdue' I would then like to further this list so I can select it to change based on the 'project manager'. One of the things I've tried to figure out how to do is to cut out parts of FMP. Currently, I've been using my screendump (or screenshot) program since it can cut out with precise crosshairs and then either save to clipboard or save to file. As you can imagine, having a third party app do this is not good since it's not as accurate as is needed. Re using something like Paint Shop Pro, the weird thing there is that graphical elements taken out of FMP, manipulated in PSP and then put back into FMP change size which again means not an accurate way to do this. I have a db, ItemDescription, and a db Checkoutlist, which points to a portal in ItemCheckout. People can check out numerous items from this portal, using the value list ItemDescription::ItemName. From what I have read on these forums, it's evident you can't have specific nested portals. But I have not yet found a solution to my problem. I have three files: Customers, Invoices, and Products. Customers has all the contact information and orderID, invoices simply has the orderID, productID, and quantity. Products has productID and the product name. 1. Is there another technique besides "Show message"? The amount of text it allows is very limited. I'd like to have a popup like it but that allows for more text. 2. I have experienced in several different situations that a Portal will make other objects that might be tucked behind it on a layout to behave irratically. My current issue is that I have created multiple layouts that simulate the appearance of additional windows of information being open or closed. In one of these I have a portal which in reality is sitting on a rounded-rectangle graphic object (for the window) which in turn is overlapping a calculated field that is returning a graphic as its result. I've been looking for a navigation bar I saw in a demo in last few days. I opened up all of my kept ones (and I have a ton!) but I can't find it. I currently have first, previous, next, last and find, new and delete buttons as individual icons. I'm thinking that since I've changed the layouts so much (to tabbed interface), that although a solid bar with buttons on it would be better - even if it is much plainer. I have a field in File A with consecutive numbers on different lines (e.g.) 1 2 3 4 5 etc. In a related file, File B, I have created a lookup that appears as a pop-up of this field. I can click on the field and choose a number from the list and that number appears in the field. I then have another file, File C that has a portal to FIle B. This same pop-up field still acts as a pop-up, but there is nothing in the list! What happened and what can I do to get it to work correctly? Peter

I have seen Company names in the place of scripts on the top menu bar. http://www.nightwing.com.au/FileMaker/ All of his demo's (not developer solutions) have his company name in the place of scripts. How is that lined background done? I see it often in the niftier layouts. Wanted to add to one of my layouts so I made a copy of Graphite template and took everything out in an attempt to de-construct it to figure it out. Nothing. I checked in all the pulldowns for clues but again came up blank. Any help appreciated (and I've attached a screenshot of what I'm talking about, just in case. Basically I need a field that will be used as a trigger for other events. I need a field (a date, number text, anything) that will have data that will change in some way anytime a new portal row is created or changes are made to a portal row. As an example: Count(Related::One) Counts the number of portal rows, and changes for each new addition or deletion. I have borrowed (stolen) a beautiful heading from Cobalt Sky, shown on his demo file Portal Range Finder (can be downloaded from his website). This text consists of three overlapping text fields. I want to use this heading on each form view throughout my designs. It appears I need to edit the text on all three independently and the only way I can do that is to split them and move them a bit apart. Dificulty is because I don't want to use any more graphics. Since I started changing my db to a tabbed interface type, its basic size is growing and I don't want to add to that with another pic. I'll be making the layouts that are left into tabbed ones, too, since it's important to the db, but want to keep the splash simple but definitely make it more exciting. I'm attaching my boring one and was hoping others could share any of their splashes that they fill fit the bill of no graphics yet interesting. Thanks.

I'm combining two fields which have information originally entered via a portal. Normally, when information is changed in the portal the information in the related field updates automatically. However, I have found that when two fields have been combined the information will no longer automatically update (because it is now a caluclated field?). Is there a way to force an update when a change is made in the portal without a script - or do I need to just keep the fields separate? Thank You.

I have, gloriously, inhereited a databse from another developer, now long gone, in it, I have a layout, called 'Help' which is, apparanetly, corrupt, as it freezes the entire computer, to where I have to do a hard boot, every time I go to it, in any mode, under any circumstances. I want to get rid of it! Its sittig there in a list of layouts, waiting to be selected, waiting to have some hapless developer choose it and corrupt the whole file because it hangs halfway through some important thingy.
