FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. When attempting to setup administration authentication on FM Server 7 - I'm asked to 'change' an old password and confirm a new password... of course i've just installed it so don't have an old password... and now it won't let me set a new password.... blank doesn't work either... any ideas? 2. this is becoming a problem. i have a development server set up with three drives: one for OS/apps and two in a RAID1 mirror for data. i can't get my FileMaker Server to recognize the RAID path to the databases as the alternate database location. what do i have to do to make FMS7 recognize the path? or do the databases HAVE to reside on the same drive as the server app? i'm going to have a lot of problems rolling out new systems if i can't get this to work. thanks in advance!

  3. Perhaps others know this, but this stumped me for a while. To use other backup folders in your backup schedule, make sure you do these things: 1. Get Info on the folder, and make sure you set it's owner to 'fmserver' and group to 'fmsadmin' 2. Make sure you include the trailing slash '/' in the path name Also, watch these things: 1. when you tab out of the field, it will say "Path valid" or "Invalid" 2. Manually trigger the script (action menu) just to make sure it worked.

  4. I work with a non-profit youth ministry. We do not have the financial resources to pay for an optimal environment in most "recommended practices'. Currently, we are using a G4 eMac 1GHz w/ 768 MB ram with OsX 10.3.5 as our simple 'server'. We'll have about 15 clients connecting using FM6, all with only light use. Probably no more than 5 at any one time. Mainly due to cost factors, we'd like to only use one machine for all the below. Here are a few of my questions: 1) we are using this computer for a small email server that automatically checks email (Entourage) every 3 minutes. (typically only 20-30 emails received a day) - what is the worst that will happen by…

  7. I've been told that the Client and Server versions of Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" are basically the same except that the server version includes more administration tools. Filemaker recommends both operating systems versions for Filemaker Pro 7 Server Advanced. Is there a major benefit of one operating system over the other in terms of running Filemaker Pro 7 Server Advanced? If so does it matter if you use the Mac OS Server 10 client limit version as opposed to the unlimited client version? From my understanding the 10 client limit applies only to file sharing but I'm not sure if that would be a factor affecting Filemaker Pro 7 Advanced ability to host files to more than 10 …

  8. I'm completely new to filemaker, and I can't find much information thats simple and direct for a newcomer. Basically, I have a network of several macs running os x 10.3.5. It would be helpful if we could all access and amend/add data to the same database (and possibly one or two other databases in the future). What is the benefit to using Filemaker server, and is it the software I would need for the set-up I've mentioned? Do you need to install both Filemaker Pro and Filemaker Server on the machine that will be hosting the database? If anyone is willing to spend the time giving me a basically overview of how it all works, I'd really really appreciate it! :

  9. Hello, Is anybody out there using FileMaker Server 7 in a heavily used environment (more than 50 host databases and more than 30 users)? Has anybody ever seen it perform very slowly or crash? We installed FileMaker server 7 on Windows 2003 Server 2x 3.2 Ghz Xeon with 5 GB of RAM. This box is dedicated to FileMaker server. We have about 94 hosted databases and an average of about 80 users on the host at one time. We tried to clean up our databases prior to converting to version seven and did additional cleanup to the databases after conversion. We also have the ODBC plug-in from server seven advanced installed although we have not made in the ODBC connection…

  10. Can anyone tell me how I can use an Opening file from within Citrix? I've created one, but of course, only one user can access it. The second gets a file in use error. I can successfully connect multiple times using <file> <open remote> but this will not be acceptable to me users. We are using a FMP server located at a remote location and operation via the WAN is wayyyyyyyy to slow. Thanks in advance. Bob Clabaugh NW Regional Education Service District

  12. Hi everybody! This is quite a long story, so please bare with me... I am trying to publish a database to a website on my intranet (lan). So I installed filemaker server 7 and updated it with filemaker server advanced for the web possibilities. I've updated the whole thing to 7.0v2 since I like updating. So far so good! I've created a simple database with two fields and loaded it with some records and populated the fields. Next thing was to put the database in the filemaker server so that it would share the database on my network. When I open filemaker I can open the database and edit the fields and so on. I'm still going strong Next I started the filemaker site…

  14. Hello. I installed FM7 Server on my W2K Server (SP4) yesterday and since this morning I have been unable to connect to my FM7 Server using the local server admin mmc plugin. I was able to yesterday but now when you click 'Connect' it just sits there for a while and nothing happens, no error message or anything. I cannot connect via a remote machine as I get the 'not setup for remote admin' message. I have tried rebooting and verified that both services are running, there is no firewall on the machine and nothing has been installed on the m/c since yesterday. If there is a way of enabling remote admin with a registry/text file edit then I could live with it…

  15. so..I'm running FM Server 7 on a Mac running 10.3.5 (not server).. I'm bound to my company's active directory.. but my users are still prompted for a login/password.. 16. Hi, How do I pass data from form fields inside a simple html page to a filemaker database? Right now our web page is being hosted on a separate IP and I would need to make a call to our database which is on another separate IP and insert the records the user typed in on our web form into our database automatically and then return to a thank you page. Error checking would be nice but is not required. That's it. How the heck do I do that? Thanks in advance! Eric...

  17. Hi again, Another problem I have with FM Server Advanced on a Mac (OSX) is that the backups do not work when going to a zip disk or a USB flash drive. The backups work fine when they are directed at a directory on the hard disk of the computer. When the backups are pointed at the zip or the flash drive, nothing appears. I don't see any errors in the events log (not a surprise). Is there some other place I should be looking? These are both USB devices. Maybe that has something to do with it? Although I doubt that. I have Mac OS-X 10.2, Filemaker Server 5.5v4. Any ideas? Thanks! Jim Shain

Hi everyone, Have stumbled upon a problem that is soon going to become huge if not fixed ASAP. I am running a database on a server which generates reports for the kids at my school. After we upgraded our machines from 98 to XP, FMP will only allow one user at a time to use it. I think that when our techie created our images he put a single lisence code in because he didn't have access to the correct code. My question is ~ Is there any way to change the installation code to the new volume lisence code Many thanx

  22. I'm in a Mac Network using FM Server 5.5 and FMPv6.0.4. And last week I updated the Server and now the Images do not appear. The Servers and File Locations were all named the same. The Pictures were stored as "use only a Reference" and now only display "Could not draw picture file:sampleimage.jpg". Can the References be reset, other than manually relocating every image (7000+). In FMPv7 I could use a Calculation to show a Container with Path & File Name. How do you fix this in v6? Can the References be reset, or can an entire group be Batched? etc? Please Help. I'm pretty good with Filemaker, except when it fails. Dan

Dont know if this is the right place, but it seemed to do with Network stuff so correct me if I need to post somewhere else. I have NEVER used FMP over a network, but the solution I am creating is going to be used on a network. They plan to place both FMP and the solution on a windows VPN and allow the user to log on and acccess the soluton from there. I can access it via my Mac using MS Remote Desktop Connection and run the Windows FMP and the solution no problem. My question is: Will this work? If multiple users run this solution will it work? Anyway, I thought I would ask the experts out there since networking-wise I am a newborn. Thanks in advance …

I do not want the user to use or see that page. Vince

  27. I know that FMS 5.5 and SQL Server should not be on the same machine under any circumstances. Can anyone point me to a page on FM's site that states this? I want to forward the link to a particularly, ummm... INTRANSIGENT client. I'm just having trouble finding the link. I'm aware it's in the manual, but i am sure this client will tell me he can't find the manual and i don't want to send him another one. TIA, Jerry

  28. We are running filemaker server with 15 users. Once the user sits idle for a small amount of time they are required to reconnect to the server. Anyone have an idea why the server drops off. Cabling is not suspect.

  31. My copy of Fm Server has stopped creating backups of the databases to the backup directory. It was working up until about a month ago. I have a script that should perform the backup every morning. I have tried recreating the script, restarting the server, making the directories world readable/writable, and restarting the machine. 62. Using the two server configuration with Server 7 Advanced, I want to have one machine with Filemaker Server and the web publishing core, then I want to use our company's current IIS server for the web server, hoping they will agree to install the administration console on this machine as well. Just wanted to make sure that Filemaker can share the IIS web server with all the ASP apps our company uses, or does it have to have its own? Also I'm curious if anybody knows if there would be a problem with installing the administration console on our web server. Would it take too much resources, slow down the server, etc.

Hi all, I am interested in putting my database on the web and I have no experience with doing this. I was at Devcon and was told that I can simply use instant web publishing and post it. Most of my scripts need minimal adjusting for web compatibility. Would this make people able to go online to a website and use the solution? One question I have is that with the re-login step it says it is web compatible but displays "Re-Login[Perform with dialog(NOT COMPATIBLE)]", does this mean that it can only perform without dialog?. Pardon my ignorance on this issue but it is new to me. Also, any information on sources that would teach me more about Web based solutions…

  64. Good morning, Our company currently has a high number of FMP 5.0 DB's with no planned upgrade to 7. That said, we are running the 5.0 server software and need to purchase another copy for installation on a desktop device that will host the files as opposed to our server that hosts the other files (long story). Is the Server 7.0 software compatable with FMP 5.0 DB's or must we purchase another copy of server 5.0? Since we are looking to install the server software on a Desktop Device running Windows 2000 Pro/XP, I see the documentation states there is a 10 user limit. Is this limit valid or can we have 40 users hosting to the desktop device? Is the up…

  66. Does anybody have a system in place whereby you are accessing Filemaker server 7 remotely using your PDA e.g. palm treo 600 over a GPRS network? If so, has this been successful in terms of performance and creating new records from your PDA with an adequate visual of your web published layouts? Thanks for any feedback.

  68. Is there a way to batch process a group of database files to make them single-user? If so, would I write a batch file to do it? I'm running Server 5.5 and Win2k. Thanks in advance, Kyle

  69. Hi, My boss wants to make adjustments to the interface of our database at home. Is it possible to connect via internet to the server (which is at the office, Filemaker Server 5.5 on Win2K) and work with these files? What adjustments need to be done? Thanks for your replies! 70. Hello all, Running FM7 Server on Windows 2000 SP4 Server. Recently installed a Check Point VPN device and services and now FM7 Server won't allow the addition of new databases. When a new file is added to the directory it doesn't show up in the remote file listing and if tried to access by directly opening from the shared folder the user gets the "file in use" error, even though I know the file isn't in use. Additionally, we keep getting a runtime error message when trying to use the Server Administrator Counsel on the server and when trying to use remote administration the program times out. I believe that the installation of the VPN hardware and software has…

  71. Hi. I'm hoping someone can help us. We're trying to use the FM7 Server Admin to backup our database onto a network drive. However, we can't figure out what the valid path name would be. Valid path names to the local drive seems to be: filemac:/Macintosh HD/etc.. But what would it be for a network drive? Thanks for your help, Phil

  72. The Documentation refers many times to the Administration Console for setting up Web Publishing but I can't find the console anywhere - Apache is running and configured correctly but where is the admin console? I've looked everywhere in the FM Server folder in HardDisk/Library just like it says but there is no Administrator Console!! HELP

  74. Good morning: I'd like to know how to move databases from my computer to the FileMaker 7 Server (which is on a different building). Both computers are PowerMac G5. I thought about using Timbuk tu but I don't know if that's the best practice. Also, I'd like to know what's the best way to make changes to databases, that are still in developing process, hosted on that far-away server . I will appreciate your response very much. Thank you. 75. Does anyone know of a way to determine and access the current user's NT user name from within FileMaker? I am glad to see that external authentication is possible but I need to know exactly who is making changes without having to enter every NT user name into the database.

  76. I am running into the following problem. If we add a database file to the server's database directory, the database does not show up right away. So far if i restart the services or just wait a LONG time, then the database shows up. Does anyone know of a way to change this? Chris

  77. I'm trying to setup an ISP Billing package called Optigold, which runs off of Filemaker Pro. Included in this package is a web interface which uses the Web Server Connector. I have tried and tried but cannot seem to get the web interface and the web connector to work properly. I have FileMaker Pro 5.5 Unlimited and WebServer Connector installed on a Windows 2000 Server running IIS 5.5. I have another Windows 2000 Server running FileMaker Server 5.5, which hosts the database. 81. I am new to filemaker 7 server. To clarify, is this how remote access works - databases are hosted or served from the windows computer (with FM server loaded) and remote desktops and laptops at other locations have access directly into those filemaker hosted databases (not via web publishing) ? Also, do the remote desktops need copies of filemaker 7 installed to open the hosted files? Thanks for any advice.

  82. I'm looking for a 5.5 server license. Anybody have one they want to sell?

  83. Um...did I miss something in the documentation. I've got the server and web publisher running and configured...and I can go to the Instant Web Publishing page...but on Macs and Win I get a Javascript error 802 whe I try to open a database. Did I miss something? Thanks!

  84. I have 5 databases in tied together via various relations. When I put the db's on the server and go through all the scripts with the sort steps, etc everything works fine. Then I serve them and our clients can open them on their desktops. But even though they're open all the relationships are missing. If I go into the "master" file of the 5 and look for the relationships it says "file missing" and so in essence the client is looking at 5 independent databases rather than 5 related db's. Any idea what I've missed? Thank you.

  85. Thanks to the wisdom gleaned from this board, I've avoided purchasing a new computer to run FMS 5.5 (now I can take everybody out for ice cream!), and will be adding a SATA interface and 10,000 RPM Raptor drive to an older machine (running OS X) instead. The built-in interface for the existing drive is ATA, and runs the optical drive as well. My question is: what would be the best way to use the two drives to optimize FMS performance? Ditch the old one and put the OS and data on the fast one? Put the OS on the old one and the data on the new one? Make a software RAID out of them (or out of partitions of one)?

  86. Maybe this belongs in the hardware section, but we're all one big happy family, right? I'm just setting up to serve web pages driven by a FM 7 database. I want to do custom web publishing so I'll be going with FM7 Server Advanced. I haven't bought any hardware or software, so now is the time to find out what I don't know. From what I've read I was thinking that I'd need 2 new boxes -- one running Win Server 2003 Standard that acts as the web server (IIS), and a second one running Win Server 2003 and FM7SA. But as I look at the file maker site I see the following: * Also consider using this set of requirements if you plan to install the Web Publish…

  87. So this isn't exactly a FileMaker Server question, but... I'm upgrading a computer here to OS X Server (10.3). This computer is almost a dedicated server, but still needs to be used occaisionaly for a few tasks. I want to secure FM7 so it's not messed with, so I'm thnking that I'll create a FileMaker user, and keep that used logged in and running FM7 while someone else can log in via Fast User Switching. How does this sound? Is there any reason why this might not work well? Thanks

  88. Hi all, I have serveral plug-ins in the Server (Server Plug-ins) set to Enabled and Allow Filemaker 7 Server to use Plugs is set to true. The client fm7 PRO is set to auto-update plug-ins. Do I have to install the plug-ins on client's computer or Filemaker will automatically get the plug-ins from the server and uses it on the client's computer? Thanks, Ha Pham.

  89. I have a small local network with FM Server 5. As I'm actually "switching" on FM Server 7, I wonder if I can run FM Server 7 (installed on another Mac) on the *same* local network in order to make some test. Do you think it's risky ? Is there some possibilities that FMP clent 5 and FMP client 7 "mix" sended/received data ? Databases are indentical - of course, the new ones were converted to 7 format. Thanx for your help.

  90. We have set up a RAIC for our filemaker database, entered all the information into the web conector (server IP and file name) and all is working fine (except for the clients hitting 100% CPU which seems to be a common problem) But my problem seems to be the web connector losing the Ip and file name information if the server is turned off / rebooted or IIS is stopped. When the server is brought back up, we have to enter all the details again to get the RAIC working. How can I save the information so we don't lose it! Very frustrating....

  91. I am frustrated. I have Server 7 running on X. From relationships I can access any file. BUT, when I go to have a script import records from a database it says it can't find the hosted database...although from any other type of script it will. AND I can find it with the dialog when ask to. When I try to edit/view the file location in the script it also says it can't find the file. BUT when the files aren't hosted on the server everything works fine. I am a very experienced FM programmer and I have torn my hair our on this. HELP! Mac or PC clients are same.

I've just got off the phone to Filemaker technical support, who told me that it is a 'feature' that you can't edit a global field on a hosted file from a client machine; for changes to global fields to 'take', you have to make the change to the file locally, then re-serve it. Aside from being the dumbest 'feature' I've ever heard, I was wondering if there were any workarounds for this issue, and what other people do when they need to alter the contents of a global field from a networked client. Developer (client) 7.0v2; Server 7.0v1.

  97. Hi, I am upgrading from Server 5 to Advanced Server 7. I have the full version of advanced server 7. The DB that im currently running is set up in a 5 enviornment, (5 Pro client and 5 server). How exactly should I handle the task of changing everything over to 7 Pro (client) and 7 Server (advanced). Can I install 7, while leaving 5? Is that the best way to do it. Or should I delete all the versions of 5 first and then install 7? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.....thanks!!!

Here's my delimma: When I run a set of db files in single user mode (fmserver close d:...) they are extremely quick As soon as I have the FM server host them, it takes forever to open these files. It goes from .1-.3 secs load time to 30-50 secs. The initial load file is a calendar that uses a script to pull data (such as upcoming jobs and bids and bills) from the other db files in that directory. It has a dialog box that says 'Replacing...' at the top and 'Updating Records remaining to update: 7" until it finally hits 1.
