Greetings - We have an import script that reads text lines from a *.txt into a FM text field. After importing we have a script that parses all the data into the fields. This worked correctly under FM6. Under FM7 the text line that is read in is being truncated at the first comma. So the complete line does not come in. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi, this is my current problem, i recently have changed my old pc for a new one, now every time that i want to open one of my filemaker files, there is always the same dialog at the opening: "The date and time formats associated with FILENAME are different than the current system setting. What date and time formats would you like to use?" Ok, i know that if i save a copy of the database as a clone in the system that this is showing up, it will be no more problem, but the issue here is that the file is used in 3 diferent machines, so, if i do that in my computer, the other 2 will have the same problem. I uploaded the FM v7 trial version about a month ago. In browsing it I saw and actualy used a Menu Item/or Button that was something like Find Dulicates. My boss said he would Buy it if it would do what we want. So On anothre computer I UL's the trial again. Now No such Menu Item exists. The tech support Knowledge base article all tak about creating scripts. I know I am NOT crazy, it WAS there, just a standard Menu Item. Where is is now?? Was I using some version with special plug-ins or something. Please if someone knows what I am talking about, tell me why that itm is gone!

Hi, I'm attempting to write a database that uses the account, which is their badge number. In the db there is a script that I am trying to have their account placed in a text box, but I only see "Insert Current User Name", there is no "current user account". Another curious question I have is that when you initially start up FMP7 and go to log it it automatically assumes your account is your windows login name, (not the same as the badge number I am trying to use as my account). This affects it as well because under properties I wanted to make an automatic field that says the FIELD=account name (not user name!). But when it automatically does this it is plac…

I've got an FM 7 server on a machine in my office, and I have FM 7 Dev on my laptop. My laptop uses the name GHOSTFROG. Sometimes when I try to log into the database, I get warnings about a license key violation when I try to connect. This is happening fairly often, and happens regardless of whether I close FileMaker properly or get disconnected.. "The maximum number of licensed users are currently using this copy of FileMaker Pro. Please refer blah blah blah... Is it posible to format a field using HTML? like if the contencts of that field were HTML and it would be displayed correctly?

I'm having an awfully hard time learning FileMaker. (My wife says I went through this six years ago, too, when I first learned MS Access.) I really want to believe that FMP is easy-to-use, but I just don't know... I think part of the problem is that I've gotten used to solving/analyzing problems in Access-think, and FMP really does represent a different paradigm. Is anyone aware of a resource which would "translate" procedures from Access-speak to FileMaker-speak? Thank you very much.

I am having a problem with the Delete record function - from the menu and from a script step. I am using a separate interface file to access data in another table. When Delete record is selected/performed, the regular dialog box is displayed - "Permanently delete this ENTIRE record?" When "Delete" is selected, a progress dialog is displayed "Gathering records..." - if it is not cancelled, all the records in the database are deleted - has anyone seen this behavior? I may be overlooking a simple cause/solution - I've spent a lot of time searching the regular resources - can't even find a reference to the dialog, "Gathering records..."

Hello, I desperately need help. I'm kind of new in FileMaker, so I hope you can help me. I'm trying to do a find in a column that will give all the numbers that start with 1, but instead I get what appears to be, everything that has a one. What am I doing wrong? I was able to do this with no problem in FileMaker 5. I'm kind of frustrated because I need to finish this soon so I can print it. I appreciate your help

Grumble.... no idea how to start describing this... I've got an account table, and it's linked to a table of teachers which is linked to school which is linked to district. On my account layout, you select the teacher from a list box (the list was generated through a relationship by school district, but I guess that's not important) Anyway, right after selecting that, the first thing I do is run a script that copies the teacher's address (or school's or district's) to the account's billing or shipping. But most of the time, it copies nothing. I have to click on the background of the layout a couple times before it will register the relationships and let me copy.…

I just converted my database from v6 to v7. I made a "goods costing", where it loads up information of raw goods" from other related tables through calculaded values (e.g: goodscosting/field1[u.price]=rawgoodsfield7[u.price]. this would give me the value of other calculations that goes on inside goods costing. On version 6 used to work excellent but not on v.7 . on version 7 (now) When I input new data on the "Goods Costing", It fails to bring up the u.prices. But then, when I close and open Filemaker- the data shows up. Is this a glitch? I am just about to go back to FM6 Hope I was clear with my explanation.... Any suggestions, or help? thnk …

I am looking to use FMP7 as a frontend for MySQL. Is this possible using the ODBC drivers that come with FMP? What are the limitations if this does work? Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Colin

Hello All, I've decided to take the plunge this weekend, and convert my FM6 files to FM7. Question: I have a number of files that have THOUSANDS of records in them. 60,000 to 100,000 records. Is Filemaker 7 Faster if it is in the same file? Is it better to rebuild these files into Tables on my main file, or keep them seperated the way FM6 does. I use my database over a VPN, and I'm concerned about speed. I'll have about 500,000 records in a single file between the different tables, and after using FM6 so long, that number scares me. Thanks! I need some help and advice setting up a database for an academic project. I have just purcahsed Filmaker Pro7 software but have never used it before. I am about to begin a research project looking into children's early reading books and the words that they contain. I am specifically interested in how frequently the most common 500 words in the English language appear in those books. I would like to have a seperate letter DB on all client machines that reference an account DB on the server. How can I move a found set move to the letter DB on the client machine? So the user would do a search in the accounts file that is on the server, and then click a button to send a letter to found set.

6-8 months ago the forum was all a buzz with the fuzzy fonts in FM7. I have been patiently waiting for a solution. I haven't seen anyone griping about the fonts lately so, has everyone aquiesed or is there a fix I don't know about? Thanks.

In FM5 it was possible to do finds and print while the window/file was hidden. Is this possible in FM7?. So far, my experience with FM7 is that the window must be selected for finds to be accomplished. Is this true?

I have a solution that is going to be accessed by people in various offices. We want to have a training session at a retreat where all these people will be together. Every office has its own copy of FMP7, but they are installed on desktops, so it is not feasible for them to bring their computers to the retreat. Can I install the free trial version on the computers at the retreat and use it to remotely access our database for training? My concerns are: (1) is this legally OK (every user already has a legal copy back at the office) and (2) will it work--I just want to walk them through the operation of the database and show them how to access records, generate reports, …

On my multiple-user machine, the only user who can use a user dictionary of any kind is the main (administrative) user, no matter where (or with what permissions) the non-admin users choose to place their user dictionaries. All you get is "Cannot load user dictionary" errors! Even after having FileMaker create a user dictionary (which it does just fine), these users cannot edit or use these dictionaries. Permissions are completely fine for each of these files, BTW... This is incredibly annoying. I am in the process of converting .fp5 files to .fp7. I have had much success so far, however I currently have two files that will not convert. The conversion log ends with "1/25/2005 2:02:49 PM, Master List Workers.fp7, -1, Unknown Error: ." I get an error message that says "File Conversion could not be completed. This file seems to be damaged." What can I do to get the files converted?

It just locks me out. Asks for account name and password or whether I want to change the password. I never created a password. I create a file, save it and the next time I can't get in. What is going on?

I recently converted my database which is fairly simple to version 7. It has been working fine in version 5 and now I am having trouble with a time field. I use the time fields for calculations of timecode. The fields having trouble function like this. I enter a start time in the format hh:mm:ss and a end time in the same format. The database then calculates the difference between the two and displays it in another field (ie;length) in the same format hh:mm:ss. Now that I have upgraded to version 7 that no longer works. I put in a start time and recieve a format error saying that the time is entered incorrectly. Same goes for the end time. Then when both numbers are …

Is it possible to have a MySQL solution incorporate data from a filemaker database on the fly ? eg. MySQL database of Interviews will automatically include the current body of data from a filemaker file named Possible Interviews so, if I delete something from the Filemaker database, it will automatically not show in the MySQL database ?

I have two files User Interface and Data. I have my users part of a privilege set (in the data file) that does not allow them to create or delete records. In my UI file, I am opting to create buttons for record creation, etc. However, even if I run the script (in the UI file) with full access privileges, it does not work across external files. Do I need to create scripts in the data file that run with full access, then call those from the UI? I was just wondering if I was missing something because duplicating scripts seems redundant. I'm working on a "navigational" system, where user can "return" to where he came (with several tables, layouts etc). My idea was to store RecordID and LayoutNumber into 2 globals. And then use them if the user decides to "go back" from the previous record he saw. Anyway. Am I missing something ? But looks like FM offers RecordID but do not allow to use it with a proper function. The function Go To Record use RecordNumber (which is the number of the record whithin the found set, so it can change of course) :? Do you know a way to use RecordID instead ?

Hi, I have never used FMP and have little experience with any "back-end" database stuff (i.e. I have created relational databases in Access, but have not dealt with anything server related). My boss wants me to give him a run-down of what the different options for FMP are including just getting the software or buying the server as well. Can anyone help me? Hi folks, If there is somebody here with experience under both Windows and Mac this would be great. I wrote a rather complexe appliction (32 tables, about 60 relations) that works fine under Windows (Pentium 4, 256 MB). Under OS X (iMac G4) it takes a horrible long time to display a new record, with all data shown in the portals and two windows that are actualized by script. I really do not understand the reason for that problem, because the G4 should definitely not be slower than my old Pentium - and FileMaker was designed for Macintosh in the beginning, wasn't it? I dont know if I'm wording it right but I was wondering if it was possible to do sub databases with this program. Like say for instance, instead of having-- Table 1 Table 1.2 Table 1.3 Table 2 Table 3 You would be able to do something like... If I drag the window across both and open a table in a new window that seems to work until i want to open a PDF page on the scond and type off of into FM. In my sample file , I have two table occurances - Main and Portal. In table "Main" I have two fields Key (Auto Enter Serial) Copy Field - Text. I have a database which records students grades. There are several tables, but the main ones are Students and Grades (one Student to many Grades relationship via a unique student number). When a pupil leaves school, I don't want them appearing in finds any more, but still need to be able to have their details available. I thought of two ways of doing this: 1. I have made the purchase order field auto-numbering but need to be able to create a button that when you click it gives a sequential job number as well as being able to enter a job number if needed.

Speed issues - v6 vs v7 I have recently translated a database solution from 6 to version 7 and have finally got the whole thing to work exactly the same as before but this time all the separate related files in one single file. However I have noticed that running in version 7 the whole database is significantly slower. Simple routines were faster on my old 400MHz G4 laptop in v6 than on my dual 2GHz G5 running version 7. I have converted the original FM6 files and all seems well apart from the following: When in layout mode whenever I wish to edit an object, the screen refreshes up to 8 times, usually after I click on the object to be edited..this may be a txt box or field or graphic object. Also is FM7 significantly slower than previous releases or is it jusy my FM7 ? I would like to have the text in one field change color as a result of a value in another field. Field 1 is TASKS: Field 2 is PRIORITY If the priority of a task is urgent, the font would turn red. If the priority of a task is not urgent, the font would remain black. Is something like this doable in FM7? Are there any plug-ins available that would do this? Thanks, Jarvis

I have follwed FileMakers directions with no success. I can not delete a layout from the database file. I have tried to delete individual elements with equally no sucess. Everytime I try to do so FileMaker crashes. Does anyone have an ideas on how to delete a damaged layout other then what FileMaker recommends. This is all part of an attempt to hide the Status Area but still allow users to have all its features. Anyone know why this won't work?

Thank god I had an Excel file with the most recent information. Hi everyone, I have a question. Is there a limit to the number of characters used in a sort? I have a solution that has a field containing data from 3 different fields. I have a script that uses this field to find duplicates. I sort them first and use a loop and a global field. If the global matches the field then is flags it as a duplicate. I have one item that doesn't flag as a duplicate and the only difference I can see is that it is the longest item I have. The field is as follows: "J 0001463 Connector, Fargo-Bonding And Grounding. I am running FileMaker 6 Unlimited on a server machine which also serves CDML to my clients. On another Mac I have been testing and configuring FileMaker 7, Network sharing and Instant Web Publishing is turned of on FM 7. It seems that something FM 7 is doing is freezing up FM 6 on the server machine (the colored, spinning beach ball appears). It does not happen all the time, but enough that I have to keep checking to see if FM 6 has frozen up. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here? Thanks in advance.

My database with 3900 records became damaged. I was not at work when it happened so have no history. When I used the Recover command it crashed Filemaker. We have Mac OS X at work and that's where I attempted to recover it. So I did a backup, brought it home and tried to recover it on my PC, Windows XP. No luck, it still crashed Filemaker. Any suggestions?

Hi all, Does anyone know an effective way to Archive old records in FM7 Server for Windows? For example, every year the admin can run a command to Archive all the previous year deleted/completed projects (records) onto another database and then achieve that database in some way to keep the current DB lean. The reason why I need to implement this function is because I afraid after a few year, the database will become too big and might slow down the access speed signficantly. I use audit tracking intensively in the database also, so the db will grow in size very quickly. Thanks! Testinz.

Does anybody know of a plug in for making simple bar charts or pie charts? I bought a license for X2Max some time ago. While it is a very robust program, it also comes with a commensurately robust learning curve. What I would like is something that operates with the simplicity of the charts in MS Excel. I am getting really frustrated with the graphical "drag" in layout mode. It doesn't matter whether the graphic is a jpg, png, etc. Sometimes it leaves a permanent overlay when it is moved around, sometimes it is fine. Sometimes it will let me put a graphic on top of another graphic, sometimes it won't. I am not trying to do anything transparent. Copy and pasting doesn't resolve the issue. The problem is totally inconsistent--even using the same graphic, one day it will work fine, then the next day it starts all over again.Is this a problem for anyone else or am I cracking up? After I used the wizard to enable the statistics log I cannot login anymore to the Server Administration Tool it keeps saying cannot login. I suspected that the administrator password unintentional was changed by the wizard. Is there someone who nows how to reset the password. For any interested in the new Unicode capabilities of v.7, here's a report of my initial (successful) experiments with polytonic Greek. For context, I'm a prof who teaches ancient Greek (tech. koine) which is polytonic, rather than modern, monotonic Greek. I've used a database of Greek vocabulary words for many years in FMP3 (it started life in v. 2) using a legacy encoded font (actually 2 different ones over the years, most recently my own Galilee font). To move this data to Unicode encoding in FMP7 I first exported it from FMP3 as an ASCII text file, imported it into Word, formatted it as a giant table, changed the font of the GreekWord col. to the Galilee font. The weirdest corruption I've yet seen w/ FMP. I'm building a db for a client using FMP Dev 7.0v3 on Win XP. I've been working on this project for over a month now without any major hitches. I'm building separate front- and back-end files (only 2 files). My habit when developing is to make very frequent copies of the files using File > Save a Copy As. I just let FMP fill up the directory w/ automatically-numbered copies, then periodically save some to zips and delete the rest. I'm running FM 7 on Mac 10.2.8 and can't double-click to move field names or functions; e.g., in the "Specify Calculation" window, after selecting a function from the list, double-clicking my mouse does not move the function to the dialog box, I have to type the function in the box, and ditto for the field names. I am having funny problem on fileMaker Pro 7 during printing. I completed a filemaker pro database called ABC.fm7. Then , I decided to duplicate entire ABC.fm7 and call it XYZ.fm7. Everything work well on XYZ.fm7 but the only problem is during printing. I am using Mac OSX. While printing XYZ.fm7 on any of the layout, I open out the printing progress to check the status. To my surprise, I read as Name ABC is printing instead of XYZ is printing. Is that a BUG on FileMaker Pro 7 or am I able to change something on XYZ.fm7 so that I see XYZ is printing instead ABC?

I'm using Filemaker Pro to create a really simple customer tracking database, where I just log their details into a single page. I have been playing around with different fonts in Mac OS X and Windows. I am currently using Verdana, which seems to look OK. The fonts on the Mac look great (because of the font smoothing) and when I run on Windows (remote desktop connection), it looks pretty jaggy. I get the same effect on my Mac IF I turn font smoothing OFF on the Mac. The point is, I know MANY of you have done both Mac and Windows versions and played the "what font should I use" game. Has anyone come up with a font compatible for both OS's that look good on both? Many Regards In Advance, Kevin

I have a Microsoft Word X data merge document that was previously linked to a FileMaker Pro 6 data file via Word's FileMaker Import Wizard. After converting the FM 6 file to FM 7 format, Word no longer recognizes the FileMaker Pro data file. I have a set of records in the layout, some 50 or so. I want to be able to add new records, copy old ones etc and then modify them, but I need to put them in particular places. When I copy or make new records, they always go to the end of the list, and I cannot move them. New ones are always the last to show. How can I arrange the order of the records to suit my needs?

Hi, I've got a DB that lists parts I require. Against these P/Ns I record possible suppliers for each part. I want to generate a list that I can send to a supplier to request availability. Each part may have many suppliers so must appear on each supplier list but not all suppliers carry all parts. The possible suppliers are entered from a drop down list into a repeating field (10) but I could change this as required. What I want to end up with is: Supplier 1 Part 1 Part 2 Part 5 (new page) Supplier 2 Part 5 Part 6 (new page) etc. Thanks Pedro :-)

Hi! I just started playing with File Maker Pro 7. I got a huge data in excel and MS Access. I would like to import the whole data into a big table and then want to split it into separate tables. Can anybody tell me the best way to do this. I am using the import ODBC wizard but my boss don't like it using the Wizard. He wants me to make use of the File Maker functionality by writing code in SQL and writing some scripts. Any Help...is great.. Thanks

Is there anyone out there that can help me on this? When logged in as an admin in FMPro, and we attempt to delete a record. FMPro stops responding and freezes. The computer is new so speed isn't the issue. I had tem try it on additional PC's with the same issue. So, it isn't an issue with the PC. At this point I am not sure what the cause might be. I am running FMPro 7 server and FMPro 7 clients connecting remote to a 2003 server where the databases are stored. Anyone have any ideas. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Aloha and thank you for any help. I recently requested a trial version of FM Pro v7. I had used the application many years ago and am somewhat familiar with it. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to update some key words that I entered. I am using a template called Photography Catalog which allows for the creation of key words for searching. I input the key words (somehow!) and now cannot figure out how to access them again. I look forward to hearing from you soon. best! Ramona

Hi all - hope the above subject is an appropriate discription for what I'm experiancing here. I'm using the very neat feature in FMP7 of saving external files into my DB. However I noticed recently that the overall size of my db DIDNT reduce in size after I deleted a number of entries that had a series of big files associated to them. This leads mt to suspect that FM7 does not automatically free-up that space. I've tried "compacting" my db (Filemaker tech support once told me that if you export your db - it causes FMP to free up any blocks) with little change. Have you had any scimilar experiances ... got any suggestions?? Thanks Giles

I have a script (actually 20-30) that I would like to replace with 1 script using a new feature in FM7. The scripts delete a line in a repeating field and set a field in another table. Here is my question... How do I set a specific repetition (the script parameter) of a field to " " or clear it? The clear and set field command do not seem to have a way to use the get (script parameter) command. Any ideas?

Hi All, Am creating a solution for a customer that has 2 locations, unfortunately one of the locations has no (and can't get it) broadband connectivity, so only dial-up is available. I need to syncronise the two databases. Only the data will change, there won't be any additional tables or rows added at a later stage (o at least they won't be doing it). Is there a way to do this from within FMP or do I need a 3rd party app?? Or is the best option to use FMP web connectivity and force the use of a web browser from the *far away* location??? I have a database for a group of people. Information like member addresses, chapters they belong to etc. The plan is to get this database online so that members can access info online and update there contact information, and view certain things in the database. I know I will have to use Server and figure all that out. But I would like to show them next month what FM can do and how it can work for them. Here are some questions I have 1) How to produce a report for someone that would not have the program.

Seems simple enough, however I'm stuck on this one for some reason. Here's the deal... I have a field called notes_attachment which allows a file to be attached to a note entry in a notes portal. On the portal view I want to have a file icon if there is a file (any value) in the notes_attachment field. I have the file icon in a seperate table as a global field (where all my images are stored). Now, how would I setup a realtionship so that the field only appears on the portal if there is a value in the notes_attachment field? Thanks!

I created an email tool that sends emails using the send mail script. After each email is sent from Filemaker, the record is removed from the found set. Problem is, when the last record is omitted I'm left with zero found records and a blank layout. Is there a way to get the window to close if the found set = 0 ??

I have a multi-user license of Filemaker Pro 7. Is it possible to run 2 copies of it on the same mac ? Can I just make a copy of the Filemaker Pro folder and name the folder FMPro-2 ? Surprisingly, I tried copying the FMPro folder from my desktop to my laptop, and the program runs fine on the laptop. The reason I want to do this is that I want to have one copy of FMpro running a script once every few minutes .. but I want a person to be able to use another copy of FMpro on that machine. I tried using fast user switching to have two users run the same copy of FMPro, but the script interfered with the user and vice versa.

I'm trying to create a field and have it display ONLY the year on a layout. I created a field ... TEST the type is Date. Clicked on Options and Calculated Value and in the calculation window entered Year(Get(Current Date)). I thought this would return only 2004 in the field test. What I get is 6/27/0006. I even tried changing the Get(Current Date) to a known date field and still get 6/27/0006. Has me baffled! Can someone tell me how I can get a field to display only 2004 when the record is created in 2004 and also.... what the heck is the 6/27/0006? I've already double checked that the date on my machine is correct.

Hello, I searched the posts and didn't see this question posted anywhere. My question seems (forgive me) very basic and I feel silly for not being able to figure it out myself (not for lack of trying!) Does anyone know how to format text fields so that the line doesn't break in the middle of words? Seems simple, but I am using FM7 for a database that houses a lot of notes and research and this small thing is making it very difficult to read and search the text fields because they are broken up in odd ways. In use, I want to list all the possible assemblies that can be of use for a given location. In both use and assembly, I have a field called assembly_id, which I use to link the tables. I've been asked to design a database for up to 60 concurrent users. The awkward side of it is that the company in question use a mixture of Macs (OSX) and PCs (XP) attached to an OSX Mac network. There will be around 50,000 records altogether. I have to confess I am more of a M/soft Access designer than FileMaker but could work in either/both. Can FileMaker link to an Access database file? Can FileMaker run equally well on PCs as on Macs? Is there a more convenient back-end format that could then be linked to separate front-end files (perhaps FileMaker for the Macs and Access for the PCs)? If anyone has been down this road before and has some useful suggestions…

I recently upgraded to FM7 from FM3. FM7 seems slower, clunkier, and has even crashed on me loosing a whole file. Now I am trying to regress back to FM3 which suits my purposes but I am having difficulty exporting the data from FM7. The fields I am trying to export are fairly large text fields. I have tried using the various formats but it either cuts the data short or it sees small segments of the text as another field. Is there any method to do this short of cut/paste? Bill

HELP! I think I have just committed one of the stupidest sins of program development - not backing up recent updates after compiling a run-time version. Within minutes after uploading an updated compiled run-time file to our chef's website for distribution an intruder toasted my drive. I do have an older un-compiled versions in my backups but it means weeks of rewriting. Is there a way to access the scripts, reports, etc. from a limited access compiled run-time version? Accessing the USR file from Filemaker gives me access to the additional fields I created however, the scripts and reports are non accessible. Any assistance would be appreciated.
