I have a client who has installed FM Server 7.0. I am creating a runtime solution for him using FM Dev 7.0. My question is, can I install the runtime solution on all of his machines and have multiple users access the fm server files? OR, does my client have to purchase single FMPro 7.0 license for each machine? Thanks.

  3. I am not really that familiar with Filemaker, so apologies for the ignorance. We have a very simple database which was created in Filemaker Pro 4 OS9 which was 'saved as?' or 'exported???' as a self contained application (i.e. it does not open in Filemaker Pro when double-clicked) I have managed to open the file using a demo of Filemaker Pro7 and am now looking for a way to create a self contained database that does not require Filemaker to be installed on the users computer.

I go through the entire install, enter my key, etc., no errors noted but when I look for Dev 7, it isn't there. Pro 7 is the same- no "upgrade". Install states it will go into Filemaker/Developer but no Developer folder exists. I have done this several times. Any ideas? (I don't care if they make me feel stupid.) Anna

I have an application that is distributed in kiosk mode. A small number of my users experience 'file damaged' messages that leave the damaged file marked 'in use' so that it can not be 'recovered'. I distribute both PC and MAC versions. I develop on MAC. The users with the problems are PC users. There's nothing cute or fancy in the application. One such user pulled an unrelated CD out of their disk drive and the application ran - without even going through recover. The CD was a game. I use the .USR extension for my bound solutions - there are 27 tables (one per file - I'm still on 6 since the application doesn't convert nicely) in the solution; the most comples …

Greetings... I have a set of defined buttons that i am using on all layouts so the flow between databases is seamless. The buttons live on the right side of the layout and are stacked vertically. The problem is that when I place the buttons on a layout that uses 'list' view, the ones that overlap from the header into the body act like repeating records. Does that make sense? Is there any way to define the 'body' area of the layout so it doesn't extend past 8 1/2 inches? I think that covers it. Thanks for your help. -Brett

Sorry if this sounds totally naive! I created a recipe database that I would like to share with friends. Is it possible to covert the database to a stand alone utility so that they will not need Filemaker to view it? I know I can export to html, but I would like to retain the functionality and layout of filemaker (searching, sorting, etc.). There is no need for them to add information, but I would like them to view it as it is designed in FM. I cannot really web-publish it becasue the machine FM is on is not always running. I'm currently working on a runtime solution that when finished will run on both mac's and pc's and output a string of data to be used in another program. My trouble comes from not the process, it is working perfectly. Rather the size of the compiled solution. I've built and used this same type of solution in FMP 6 and it topped out at about 9mb where as this newly recreated version in FMP 7 is topping out at a whopping 23mb. I've read all I could about it in the FMP help and manual but it really says nothing that I can see about the file size. Funny thing is this newest version is much more streamlined with about half the grapics as the old solution. Is this ju…

I have seen other posts on the matter, and forgive me if someone already posted solution, but I got a response from Filemaker Inc today on the problem. The general problem is that when you open another hosted file via a script when you only own 1 developer licence key, it displays and error message that you exceeded your 1 user license key. Looking through the forum I don't see anything on this, so I hope this hasn't been addressed before. With FM7 we can have multiple windows per file. I love this, and use it a lot. But once compiled into a Windows runtime, there doesn't seem to be a way to get the window to close! The only way to close the window is to close the application. Hence, all the popup windows are left cluttering up the desktop. Is there an easy fix for this, or will I need to create a 'close window' button on each layout that can come up as a popup? Thanks for any insight. Dan

If i add a journalist name to one table and then i press the button next to it in the portal to go to the related record in media table, i'm not able to see this newly added journalist and i see only the old journalists. The button uses an external script ( which uses the relation between join table and journalist table) from the join table to go to the journalist table. How can is solve this problem? Thanks,

As my first FM project near completion I need to get thinking about how I am going to distribute it. As far as I see it I have two options: 1) Create a seperate runtime file for a demo version of my program that lets users only have a total of three records in the database at a time. There will then be a seperate file for the full version that people can buy. 2) Put that same kind of limitation on the full version of the program where they will have to unlock it with a username / password. For those of you that have been following my progress, let me remind you that I am a fairly new FM user so I am hoping that someone can take the time and share some exper…

Hi, I am having a problem in Filemaker Developer 7 using my Troi Coding Plug-In. It always worked fine in FM5, but now it's trashing all of my phone and fax numbers in the DB. I have some global fields for information that is encrypted, and then that information is to show up in the regular Home Phone & Fax and Business Phone & Fax fields which are text fields. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions? I really need some help with this!! Thanks:) Anji

Hi-- Quite awhile ago -- I believe this solution may have been developed with a pre-6.x version of FMDev, maybe 5.5? -- I developed a runtime. I now have a client who says she is getting the notorious "This copy is either already licensed to another user or is single-user and is being opened over a network." error. She only has a single machine, and has no copy of FMP installed. She's tried restarting a couple of times, to no avail. Does anyone recall the solution for this? All My Best, Jeffrey

  73. Hi all I realise that Filemaker can compile a runtime application, through Developer Utilities, although this works it does not put all the files into one package and several dll files need to be deployed with the executable. I want to be able to produce a single file that contains all the Dll files and installs them automatically, similar to Wise Solutions Windows Installer (www.wise.com). Can Filemaker do this, if it can, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks for your help Matt

Hi everyone!! Trying to figure-out the best way to detect if the server im trying to get access to is down. Right know, ive got a dummie file that points to a perticular file on a server. What i do is open that file, and trap the error. If error = 100 (File not found) i send user to a layout explaning that the server is down etc... Is this how a FMP developer would handle this problem, or is there a better way of doing this. Please advise, Patrick

When creating a runtime, it gets all the dictionaries. Is there a way to limit which dictionaries to bring along? And maybe to limit the amount of other files too? I have some really small solutions with databases that will never exceed 1 mb, it feels unnecessary that the runtime of these kind of solutions gets 45 mb big, even if it's not a problem for 99% of all users using it.

At our school, I'm writing a report card program. We have 4 marking periods and want to limit access to one period at a time - controled by a priviledge set. It it I've made the fields that I don't want modified by class them as No Access. [The value are entered with a drop down value list] The layout uses the Student table, but references the Grade records associated with each student. I've given full access to Student (and all other tables) but limited it in grades (modifiable for the ones I want - no access for the ones I don't). I get the message "This operation cannot be performed because one or more required related records are not available and cannot be created". …

I have been creating databases that include links (in container fields) to PDFs. There is one PDF for each record. I then often make run-time files that also include the links to the PDFs. I am having problems getting the PDF to open in the run-time. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it does not. I need to copy the run-time to CD, or to other computers. I include the linked PDF in the same directory as the run-time.exe file. In some cases, the runtime appears to search the directory containing the runtime because it finds the PDF and opens the file. In other cases, I get a (Not found) error, but the PDF is still in the same directory as the run-time. I a…

I just wanted to share a solution that I've worked up as a means of saying hello to the community -- I'm a member of the Philadelphia Area FileMaker's User Group, currently developing an architecture as a template for upgrading our solutions into 7 -- we decided we wanted to build our own help system rather than go third party. Part of the "keyword search" feature is the need to handle multi-word searches as if each word in the search was a single search -- a simple PatternCount(HelpText; Keyword) wouldn't do it. Using Developer 7, I created a custom recursive function called WordsCount, with two parameters -- Phrase and Word_to_search. Here's the function itse…

My question is about how to trap user cancelation of an operation. 1] i have made a script that does some operation in a related file with a subscript. 2] this operation takes some time, the user can cancel with the command dot command. 3] When the use has canceled the operation the related file is opened where the script was running. So my question is 1] how can i prevent user interuption 2] if that can be done how can i automatically go back to my main file when the user has cancelled a subscript in the related file. Thanks a lot for helping me solve this critical issue in my runtime application Jitse Schaafsma

Is there any way around this. I could put in a password, but that is a pain for the user. Plus how would I expire after 15 days? Would I need to give them a new password that doesn't expire? Why did they do this? Thanks for your help on this.

Yet another bug that I have in my first major developer solution. Let me see if I can explain. I have a relationship set up between two files- lesson & indicator. The lesson file gets certain indicators based on which subject is chosen in the lesson file. From there, the indicators go into a check box field where the user checks off the ones they want included in their report. The problem is, if the indicator is a longer length, you are not able to check the box. No matter how far I expand the field in layout, the indicator gets chopped off at this certain length and is unusable until it is edited down in the indicators file (which I would like to avoid doin)…
