I have a DB that has several thousand individual records that have the following fields defined: Start_Time End_Time In this DB I have to calculate for time elapsed between those 2 times. Easy enough and done. Now my bos would like me to give him the elapsed time between the <> of Record "X" <> of record Y. Visually Start End Elapsed Record X 12:34PM 12:44PM 10 Min record Y 12:47PM 12:58PM 11 Min Elapsed between record x and y = 3 min. Anyone have any ideas on how to automate this? I need some help . . . I have 3 repeating fields of 24 each. One of these fields is the sequence number that the user prefers to have them displayed. These fields represent line items on an order and are entered, as you might suspect, in the sequence that the order entry clerk puts them into the field. However, the sales representatives want to be able to re-sequence them according to their preference. Hence the 3rd repeating field. Hi all I want to choose the min date and max date when all welder were tested. Each welder may have four or five tests but i just want to know when each welder was first tested and when he was last tested along with the first process and last process he was tested on and i want to displayed this information on one line for in a view layout for each welder. FM7. Given: the developer keeps track of changes to a database solution inside the database in a table that includes a text field with a version # like 1.3.2. The table has the usual serial # field. There's one layout with a portal listing all records. A calc field keeps track of the highest serial# (Max( ChangeLog::ID )) A relationship exists between this calc field and the ID field. with out using auto serial, I can create a calc that will get the max of the field and add 1 when creating a new record, which is great untill two users create a record at the exact same time and then I have a duplicate id. Can you think of any way to avoid the dup (no using the unique validation) but through a calc??? I am trying to allow the users the use of the regular menus items without having to use a button that I would create.

Having faith in FMPro and being reasonably proficient in FM5 I volenteered to design a college timetable. The basic components are rooms, lecturers, student groups and start & end times of classes. (Length of classes is variable). Maximum number of classes per day is 3. I have tried to replicate the look of the present timetables done in Excel which is logical, days down the side and hours along the top. There are room timetables, lecturer tietables and student group timetables. These are individual for each room, lecturer and student group. I attach my solution to date. Not sure if i'm in the right section of this forum, but hopefully someone can help me anyway. I'm having a problem with portals. Maybe I'm setting them up wrong. They work fine in displaying records, deleting records and creating new records. HOWEVER, when a new record is created, it doesn't get displayed until another is created (and then that one isn't displayed (Vicious cycle haha)). Also when deleting records sometimes 1 or 2 new blank records get created. Very strange if I do say so. Can't quite figure this one out. I am trying to come up with a method/approach to solve the following and would welcome any suggestions! I have a table that stores all of the dealers that I distribute products to. To get lower pricing dealers can put certain products on their display floor in their retail store. I track what they have on the floor in a related table that I show in a portal on the dealer layout. In a file I am working on are two fields I have combined into one because I can't figure out how to do what I really want. I have a list of "Areas of concern" grouped under four main categories, e.g. Academic, Behavioural, Early Childhood, and Health. Each main category has 3 - 10 sub areas. Hi all, We use Personal Serial Database (PSD), a runtime Filemaker database, to maintain serial numbers for our hardware and software. I recently purchased and installed Filemaker Pro 6 Unlimited on my iMac G5 (Mac OS 10.3.9). Now after opening the PSD runtime file on my iMac, it's modified the file association to open it with FileMaker 6, which causes a problem because not all of our techs have Filemaker 6. How to I change the file association back to runtime? I tried the get info dialog and also changing the file extension (to .fp5, .fp7) with no luck. Ideas? Help!

I have an incident records file that requires times and dates of the following: - start time - en-route time - arrival time - end time Each time value is manually entered, and the incident date is auto entered as the creation date (modification allowed). Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I'll start here. I've had this happen on 2 different occasions in FM7. A relatively simple calculation that is the 'to' end of a relation seems to cause a very slow, prolonged sort of just a few records when going to a layout that has a portal that uses the relation. For the first occasion, it took as long as 30 seconds to 'sort' 9 records before displaying the layout. This second occasion takes several minutes to 'sort' about 400 records. I have a databse of 200 records which can be sorted in categories. I have all my totals working. The report can show the totals for a found subset of the records, say 20 records of the 200 present. I have five summary fields like the following: Tot1 = 8 Tot2= 6 Tot3= 2 Tot4= 0 Tot5= 4 Now I want to use these totals to generate a graph. My only problem is the summary fields are reading the totals for all the records when it comes to graphing them, rather than just the subset totals as shown above. Hi Does anyone know how to force FM to reindex an indexed field? I want to create a key that points at either the date in the record or if the record in over due to point to today. As today's date is an unstored calc, I had to use a getField() in the key so that FM will index it. This worked but now it won't update itself (ie today's date) as it is stored in the index. Hello everyone, I need a little help with a multi-user schedule I've built. While it works quite well on my machine, it's SLOW AS MOLASSES when hosted on our FileMaker Pro 7 server. Each user has a record in the Users table. There is a preference to include the user in the schedule. The only schedule view is a daily timeline. User names appear down the left hand side of the window and 24 portals are used to construct the timeline (12 hours in 1/2 hour increments). Ok, I have really beat my head about this, and I was trying to figure it out before boring everyone here with what will probably be a minor problem after all. I have a file attached called MWR Orders and one called MWR Salesman. A little calculation-related issue has me stumped. I have two related tables in my solution. The first is Users, the second Tasks. I have a "To Do List" view for the Users table with two portals. I think I already know the answer to this question, but wanted a more expert opinion from the forum. Is it possible to resume a paused script from within another script? I have a script that pauses for user interaction. The user is supposed to select a credit card from a portal showing all stored cards for the client. Each portal row has a little selector button in it. There is also a "Cancel" button at the bottom of the page. The "Cancel" button simply resumes the paused script. FMP6 question... I have a script which sets a field to a particular character string with a length of 235 bytes on each record, plus one carriage control. The script then exports that field for the found record set. I export that to a ".dat" named file using tab as a filetype (as there are no other options close to .dat). It appears as though filemaker adds an extra byte to each record (237 bytes per record). This file is being fed into a very specific dos based program where the extra bytes cause errors. I seem to think that I've done this before, but now can't quite remember how. -) I'd like to be able to reference a field name via a calculation. I have a number of fields called Amount1, Amount2, Amount3, etc. I can't use a repeating field for various reasons. I'd like to write a script that uses a global as a counter. Greetings; I have a field that marks an employee either Active or Inactive. Once Inactive, I have locked them out of changing the Hire/Exit date with this Validation calculation: EXIT DATE = STATUS <> "InActive". They can not override this error message. We don't want them changing back the Status back to Active so they're able to change the date either, but when I try that calculation, once I change it to Inactive, it won't let me do anything. Hope someone can help on this (basic) query. I have a timesheet function for 10 employees. Each employee creates multiple entries throughout the day as single records These entries have start_time and finish_time based on a 7.5 hour working day. I then have a trailing grand summary showing total time. I also have a calculation field in the grand summary which shows overtime hours based on the user doing more than 7.5 hours per day (total_time_overall - Time ( 7 ; 30 ; 0 )) . Here is a wonderful, chewy problem someone might be able to help me with. I am formatting chemical concentrations, and want to display them to a specified number of significant figures. I have a calc going back to the FM2 days that I am trying to update for a couple of reasons. First, there seems to be an anomaly in FM's Round function and so sometimes the output of this calc is not what we want. What would be the best structure to offer the user a choice to use a template, or not? They start a new Estimate and are asked "Would you like to use a template?" Yes, and ?? The template contains all fields with data, where user enters quantities. Estimate Table Do I use; Template Table w/repeating fields? Template Table w/globals? No need for relationship? Hello, Every record has it own unique Record ID. I want to show/use this unique Record ID in my filemaker solution. In CMDL I can use [FMP-CurrentRecID], but this time I need the current Record ID in my FileMaker solution to create a relationship to another tabel. This is a true left brain problem that I don't have the capacity to sort out. Here is the right brain description. Our public access television center signs out equipment to members for several days at a time. Members get contracts that allow them to use equipment for up to so many full 24 hour days, we do not track by the hour. So if a member takes a camera from Tuesday to Thursday, then his contract is marked up with 2 camera uses. But since we are closed on Fridays, the members get a free day, so Friday to Sunday is counted as one day. So that is my problem. I am trying to make requested changes for a client to a very primitive database that I didn't design. The client is a carpet cleaning business and uses the database for point-of-sale and accounting and generating reports. It is unbelievably crude. One of the requested changes is to come up with the total number of "days" worked in a given period of time. "Days" is defined as any day in which ANY work was done for any customer. So, if no jobs at all were performed on Monday, then that would equal ZERO days. If 14 jobs were performed on Tuesday, that would equal ONE day. And, if 1 job was performed on Wednesday, that also would equal ONE day. So, the goal is to…

I have a Survey database that I created and there is simply 1 field per question that has about 4-5 answers. For example: Q1. How do you rate our customer service? And then a "radio button" value list of A, B, C, D, F, Don't Know What I would like is for FileMaker to take all of the "Completed" survey's and determine percentages for each answer. Using a calculation/script it performs a find of "Completed" and tally's the A's for question one, divided by Found Count and returns a percentage so that I can see basically: Q1: A - 9% B - 13% C - 22% etc.. All, I think I'm missing something in my current setup so any help would be great. I have 2 DBs - Interface and Data. In the interface file I commonly use a global Keyword field [KF1] to filter portals. This filter is based on a relationship to a calculated Keyword field [KF2] in the Data file. KF2 uses various text functions to establish keywords for a each record. It retrieves words or parts of words from various fields. But it also includes retrieving text from a value list. This value list only exists in the Data file and relates to another table within that file. All of this seems to work fine with the expected dynamic results in KF2. My problem c…

I have a patient info db in FMP 5.5. Firstname, lastname, and a calc field for wholename. I want the user to get some sort of message if s/he enters a patient twice. I can't seem to figure out how to validate a calculation field as having to be unique. I tried a text field with autoenter data (wholename) validating it as unique but that doesn't work. You need to actually enter something in the field to make it validate. It isn't really practical to script it (although I wrote one that works) unless I can trigger the script upon exiting a field. Even then, the user must tab out of the "comparison" field. Double entries are a nightmare for us. Any suggestions?

Hi everybody - I'm about to get started on some synchronization scripts. We run FM Server in the office, but need to take a copy of the database on the road periodically, then update the version on the server when we get back. Both versions might be changed simultaneously, with new or changed records. This seems like it may get quite complicated as I'm dealing with at least ten tables that refer to each other, so I'm hoping to get some general advice on what works and what doesn't. I gotta' be missing something here.. I have a repeating field of say.. 20 numbers. "Stack" And, I have another field holding the index I would like to write to. "index" How in the world, from a script, can I write to stack[index]? The setField deal only allows hardcoding of repeating selections. What am I missing here? Many thanks in advance! -jim lee

Hello everyone, I've got a problem here that I just can't seem to solve. I have a database of things "A" that I'd like to choose something out of database "B" to link to it. Or, if thing "B" doesn't exist, create one and link the new one. An example would be to link a Drawing number from a database of drawings to a part in a database of parts. There's something like 10,000 drawings so that would be too many for a popup. I'd like the user to be able to just type in the drawing number he wants linked (looking at his part screen) and click a button to link the two. This seams like it should be simple but for the life of me I can/t figure it out. Problem- Short version... I am entering a "1" and I want to return 001. The filed is a number field with a general number format assigned to it. In Excel you can specify custom number functions by using the ### which will return 001 if I enter a "1" Is there a calculation, operator, or number setting that will make this work. I have three tables tableA tableB (master join keyID) tableC C is relate to B (b keyID) which holds a foreign key to A. while in C I would like to see relationship to A via B, but after record creation (via server, commit record, all indexed) the relationship will not display untill all files are closed and reopened? is this how it should be? I do not have much experience with encryption, so when I made a system that had it's own Users, Groups, etc for controlling security in accessed tables, I slapped together a quick solution that I was never really happy with. It used unstored calculation fields which parsed and converted one character to another. It was just a simple substitution of one character for another. My question is this: Has anyone made public anything in FMP for password encryption? I know that FMP 7 has its own user/groups security now with passwords, but I am not going to be using the encryption for that purpose, so I still have the same problem of trying to find a better way of encryp…

I might be posting this in the wrong area, but no other area seemed right. For no other reason than to say that I could and did, I want to develop a yahtzee game in FIlemaker. Creating the layout/graphics/eye candy is no problem for me, but I feel that I'm spending a LOT of time trying to figure out the calculations and "background" stuff (for ex. - calculating if the 5 dice is a large strait) My question is this - has anyone ever attempted to do something simular to this in Filemaker? If so, could you share the source code with me? Or, at minimum, give me some ideas on how to build this?

My company is in the wholesale embroidery business. The way our pricing is based is by the number of stitches in a particular design, and the quantity of garments we produce. A client just asked for an odd request. They would like to have the ablity to offset the page numbering. So they have found their set of records and before they print a script would prompt them 'what number would you like to give the first page?' (from there there the follow pages would go in sequence) There situation is that the FMP data is only in various sections in a number of binders.

OK, this what I need to happen. A user pushes a button to create a new record. A script checks to see how many records there are. If there are 5, a window saying "you can't have more than 5" pops up and stops the script. If there are less than 5 then the script will create a new record and quit. How do I write this script? I know how to create a new record and display a message in a window. How do you test to see how many records there are? Thanks for your time

I have a field formatted to display checkbox's [about 25 values contained in a value list]and each time I create a new record in my table I want this field to automatically select a pre-determined set of these values. I'm working on a day view schedule. I have a Schedule table with the schedule view. This table contains one record and is used merely for the interface. Globals fields are populated at login with date and time variables. When a user logs in, a set of time blocks is created for him or her. These act as a join between the schedule view and the Appointments table. One thing to note, the schedule shows each user's appointments for the day with user names down the right side and appointment time across the top (ie: time-line view). I need to add the number of days between today's date and somebody's hire date. Currently I have a field that is not shown on the layout named Current Date. The other field is named Hire Date. The field I want to display the number of days is called Days Employed. I have it set as a number field with a calculation. The calculation is Current Date - Hire Date.
