This sample file shows 2 methods of quickly finding people from a large file. There is an option for clicking on a first letter of surname to find, for example, all the "B"s. There is the "clairvoyance" option to find all last names starting with a string of letters. And - the clairvoyance option also allows you to enter multiple lines of text - so you can type MAC [return] MC [TAB] to make sure you get all the MacDonalds. Russ NameFinder.fp5.zip

There is to much confusion about performing Find thru portal. In part, this is due to the lack of explicit explanation in FM documentation but also on missing testing on user side. However I'll try to clarify the concept in following article. Most frequent common mistake: "When I perform search in portal (or on relational field) I'm looking for children records that satisfy the criteria in find" Absolutely wrong. You are searching for parent records (if any) whose children records satisfy the criteria of find. Remember that whatever search you are performing, the domain of result found set is CURRENT file. In other words the found set is the subset of…

  4. Hi, Here is the way I check duplicates in my Company/Contact file using messages "completely integrated to the interface". Hope this could help anybody. Of course, tell me if you identified any strange behaviour, as this file really belong to the my new database. Many thanks for the constant help I have on this Forum. UPDATED - SEE THE POSTS BELOW Also included an adaptation of DJ's renumbering portal to bring the Main Adress from the Adress File. I plan to post more of these in the near future as long as I rebuild my own database. Password is UGO. Thanks for the feedback.

This is an example file that shows some things that you can do with multi-level (recursive) relationships. It does some numerical calcs that propagate through generations of a sample family, and it also generates a family tree graphically. This could also be used for making organization charts etc. Edit Note: Uploaded a new file to correct a broken relationship. Multilevel.zip

As some of you have asked me, here is the "basic structure" of my multiple line items, I use in my business. It is particularly useful in the case of a customer order being splitted in more than one invoices. Hope this is not too "messfull". Please tell. I tried to make it the clearer I could. This structure use a lot of lookup fields (indexable) and a set of multikey you can use for relationships. Best regards to Steve BROWN on this forum for his help.

Hi -- I've created a database that holds all of my companies Material Safety Data sheets, but I want the end-user to be able to click on a button and open up the actual sheet on the web. Each Sheet has it's own specific website address, so I have to be able to link based on URL is entered into a specific field. I can't seem to even find out how to like Filemaker to the internet. Any thoughts Scott

Install this font into the fonts folder (win) and then configure in FM. Basically it is a copy of the normal aerial type font table which has had all the characters replaced by a made up asterisk using Font Creator. In layout mode, set a field to use this font and anything that is entered into that field will appear as "*" Enjoy! FM Asterisk.zip

Here is how I like to use checkboxes in portals. This archive contains 2 files, one the master (RadioInPortal.fp5), one is the line items (PortalLines.fp5). The are connected by a constant relation (another technique in itself) to keep it simple. It works by having a global repeating field that contains the checkbox images, a global text field that stores the chosen recordID, then there is a calc field that shows the respective checkbox image depending on weither or not its' ID is chosen. One simple script changes the chosen ID. Update: Should be more specific, this is for haveing radio buttons across items in a portal. (where was my mind this time)…

Hi folks A little something I put together to keep my coin collection tidy. It was also a test bed for a "drill-down" tabbed interface. If I was doing it again I might change a few things but generally it's as close to finished as it's likely to get. Requires FMP 6.0. The solution is locked because the interface requires really tight control. If you want to open it up, e-mail me for the password. Personal, non-commercial use only please. Comments and suggestions appreciated. Also, if anybody is prepared to enter the catalogue details for other countries could you send me a copy of your work... at the moment it's got Australia and New Zealand decimal co…

I just got my latest copy of FileMaker Advisor and had to give this a try. This file has an audit trail that tracks any and all changes to specified fields. The article was great, and I'm liking this so much I wanted to share it will everyone. My attached stater template has all the standardized fields and naming conventions of CoreSolutions along with some of the stadard graphics I use, screen sizes, etc. The record serial number field also uses the latest random stuff that was mentioned here in the Forum as well. This has always been a good place for me to start, hope someone esle can use it as well. Template.zip

Suppose you have a field let's call it Product_Code and another field Product_Description in a typical user interface you would have the field defined as a popup list or menu on a layout you would show a value list of the codes and also a the description so it is more human readable. This is typical for using a layout but what about with a plug in. Since lookups are based upon the Product_Code and don't have users entering into the description field, defining the plug in to show only the codes, it's not very rememberable, here is a way to make it more useable. In the file where the list is looked up from create a field like this, use this field when you define y…

This sample file "TxtStyl.fp5" shows how to 'embed' styled text in your solutions. You can have bold, italic, etc. text embedded with other plain text. The key here... utilize 'Merge' fields within text. This file "TxtStyl.fp5" is 'unlocked'... open, change, and do as you please. It is a FMP 5.5 file compressed into a '.zip' format. Use 'ZipIt' or 'Stuff-It' to uncompress. Good Luck!!! Bob Kundinger [email protected] TxtStyl.fp5.zip

  30. This is a very very simple Parent/Child setup, where you can add related child records from the parent record with a script/click. For example, Notes for a Client. The child records also date and time stamp themselves, so they sort automatically in the parent record's portal, newest always on top. This is nothing fancy, but I see a lot of parent/child questions, especially amongst newbies. I hope this small simple demo, which is entirely open, will help explain how this all works. I find it's always easier to learn if you have something to take apart. HTH Add Notes Setup.zip

  31. Ok, I've created one db file (FMPro 5.0v3) and seven format files Compressed as a .sit it uses 1,961,791 bytes. Compressed as a .zip it uses 2,230,863 bytes. The size is caused in part by one picture per record. The size is too big to post as an attachment on this forum. No scripts in the browser solution. The db file is a greatly altered file which has the original use in a group of related db files. As a secondary use I have a copy which I use to experiment with web publishing conundrums. I have reduced this example to eight records, each of which contains a picture in a container field. Plus other fields. There are seven format files (.htm and .txt) written …

  33. This sample file (MoveData.fp5) shows how to save changes in one field to a 'Archive-History-Audit' field. What does this mean... Lets say you have an 'address' field that has the data "101 Main Street". A user wants to change this data to "1000 North Broadway", but, wants to 'archive' the old address. This situation would typically require a 'notes' field where the user will copy and paste the 'old' address. This sample file will show how to accomplish this in a number of ways... Automatically! Some possible uses... - you could have this 'archive' any changes to field data - you could have this maintain a 'history' of changes to field data w…

A few weeks ago I mentioned a Proposal builder I used to use back in '96-'98 to bid on projects quickly so that the clients/leads could get a good idea of what they're looking at -- without me spending too much time on the Bid itself. I think captkurt asked to see it, so I dragged it out the dusty archives, gave it a cursory polish, and now it's online. It's basically a set of 4 tables. Home, Clients, Proposals, and Templates. Click here to go get it. I had to put it on my site because it wouldn't upload to FM Forums. It's 165KB. It's totally stripped down, on purpose. It's completely open, so abuse, use, and plunder at will. I have no doubt any…
