Interfacing FileMaker as a data source for the web.

  1. Started by Eric Kelly,

This may be a hopelessly ignorant question, but I'll ask anyway. We have a number of files running on our OS X network, hosted by FM Server 5.5. It now looks like we will need to provide remote access to these files via the Web, but still have them served inhouse by FM Server. I see how one can serve files on the web using FM Unlimited, but what about Server? Do we need to purchase some special additional CGI? Thanks, Eric

Instead of re-creating the databases in say... MySQL to use on the Intranet, I am wondering how I could implement our existing databases with our new Intranet setup. Any direction would be appreciated. Cheers!

I'm planning to build a FileMaker database. As always, I have some minnor questions about what hardware & software is better to use in this specific case. The project configuration is: The Db has to be searchable (and nothing else) through the internet by a limited number of people at the same time (not more than 40). Every user on the internet will be using it's own login and password to make searchs. The DB will be less than 110000 registers. The DB will be populated through 2 Macs in the same lan as the server. The server will be administrate remotely from another location. In terms of software I thought of: For the two Macs --> Two licenses …

I am working on helping a buddy setup a more efficient business. I built a simple PHP based mailing list and shopping cart program for him a couple years ago, but his business needs have out grown it. My idea is to develop a invoicing/customer database with FileMaker and somehow synchronize the online mailing list with the customer database and the orders database with the invoicing functions. How have some of you worked with something like this? His website is done in PHP/mySQL. Right now he downloads orders and imports them into FileMaker (not the best solution but it works) to print invoices. The goal is to combine everything so all functions are centralized.…

If I edit any other field that does not have a pop-up list, there is now problem with that field. However the pop-up list fields will have the values twice in the newly edited record. I reinstalled the operating system on the computer and this seemed to fix the problem for a few months. But recently I heard those chimes again, and now FM has crashed twice in two days. …

Here my problem. The database is shared online by 3 user, each user insert or modify records. Each time we have to search in the database for one or more record and after the search insert a new record. When we repeat the search we do not find the new record, because the broswer keeps in memory the web page opened before with the first search ( see temporary files ) . This problems appears with all the option about temporary files proposed by the broswer. After each new record we have first to delete alla temporary file in the broswer and than we can check again the data. Does exist a solution? Thanks Sophia

Then I change field format - popup: I allow the user to edit valuelists. That works ok when I change data in FMP6 itself, of course, but in the browser I never get to see 'edit'. Is that a failure on my side to change something regarding userrights/sharing/what have you, or does webpublishing simply not allow for this feature?

My database holds information that is sensitive and security is important. In the attached diagram, I am assuming that I could set FileMaker unlimited to only allow access to the Web Server IP address. Would that work? Is a system set up like this vulnerable to the xml security issues I have been reading about (ie -dbnames,etc)? I am trying to restrict a particular user (password) to only creating records in FileMaker. This user would access my custom web form, fill it out, and click the submit button. This form has "-NEW" as the name of the submit button. I've unchecked all privileges except 'Create record' under File > Access Privileges > Passwords. How to I set up this password to allow the user to only ADD records to the database? Thanks!

  58. Hi all, A client has requested a 'intelligent' search feature for their website which has me slightly stumped. The theory is this: Customer enters product code in search box, the web site returns all results with matching characters in consequtive order... without necessarily being the same string. So, 'DFG100' would return: DGF-100, DFGQ100, DFG1100 but not DGF100 I've been thinking of performing a 'findall' request then sending the search term to the results page as a token, then displaying the valid hits using a pattern count if statement / inline action... although i'm not sure this is feasable / efficient. Anyone out there with experience of …

  59. Hi Everyone, I am using FileMaker Pro 5.0v3 on a W2K server to share 8 databases that web forms plug in to. Seven of the eight work great, but one of these databases does not work well. After being open for about a day or so, someone will go to the form online and will get the following message: Database Not Open: Unable to process your request because the database "staffapplication.fp5" is not open. The problem here is that the database is open. When I go to the server it is up and runs fine. I either have to close the database and reopen it, or close the entire application and reopen all eight databases, and then the web form will work fine again…

I want to create a user (password) in FileMaker that would allow the user to use the web to submit a custom HTML form that would add a new record to the database. I would like to embed the password as the value of a hidden HTML form tag so that the user doesn't have to enter a password after clicking on the submit button. Is this possible? Is this a good/bad idea? How should I accomplish this (is it a matter of implementing a FMP tag)? Thanks!

  61. On my custom web form, I would like to have a text input field to allow the user to enter an email address. When the user submits the form, I want to create an email that would be sent to the address entered (if one was entered). I don't want to save the email address in the database as it would only be for this purpose. When I try to submit the form with this text element included, FileMaker complains. How should I do this? How do I get FileMaker to do this process of sending an email when a new record is entered? Thanks for your help!

Instead of the "real" field data the i get the "[FMP-field:Name]" displayed in the textfield (i.e. for the field: Name). When i understand right, this tag should be translated to the real fieldvalue. I checked all entrys on top (DB-Name, Rec etc.) with no result. What is wrong?

Gee Wow. Sounds like the folks at FMI have done developers another favor in their latest version (FMPro 6.x) by opening a BRAND NEW security hole through which a cracker can drive data. It seems that in FMPro 5.x a developer did not need to place a calculated field on a layout in order to display the data therein via a browser. And - as a matter of security - fields which are not on layouts do not appear in many cracking tools and techniques. That functionality of security has disappeared in version 6.x thanks to the wonderful family of engineers at FMI. No, no, don't thank me. Send the good folks at FMI your thanks and let them know how wonderful they are.
