We are trying to design a printed report that has both a fixed header and footer (both size and location), and has a varying sized portal (single line to 100+ lines) that will force the footer to be carried on to additional pages. Our problem is we want to keep the footer always at the bottom below a perforated line regardless of how many lines deep the portal field line items are (currently the footer moves to the point right below the portal), and we do not want the header appear on additional pages of the report. How do we do this?

Can anyone give me advice as to Fax server software that is compatible with linking to FileMaker? Specifically, Does anyone have any experience with FAXmaker by GFI? We are running FileMaker Server 5.0 & 25 FileMaker 5.5 clients. We are in the process of setting up a fax server & are interested in automating broadcast faxes from within FileMaker databases. We have been doing this with WinFax from each workstation, using DDE to pass info from FileMaker to WinFax via WinBatch, which has been somewhat buggy. Is there any way to get around the 110 inch layout limit? Using more than one layout will not work I don't think. I have approx 550 records to print, and it must be done in one print run (Am using the digital copier to double side, fold and staple). Thanks.

Trying to merge FM 5.0 found records with MsWord 2001 using OS 9.1. The merge works just once; when I go get another record Word quits (error 2). So I restart, then when reopening MsWord the message is "There is not enough memory or space on disk" to open that document BUT I have memory set to 70000K! I have a database that prints a federal form. It requires that we sub total (at the bottom of the page) the value of the monetary contribution records that are printed on that page. The way we have set up the form, it shows eight records per page but as we add records to the database, the order of these eight records shift and change. I know sub summary parts allow you to create a sub total as the sorted field changes value but this logic does not seem to be able to give a summary whenever the page breaks. Any ideas?

Hey kids. I have a problem with what should be a simple exercise in scripting. I have a script that performs a find and sort, then prompts you to view or print the document. The print setup is supposed to be for legal (8.5x14) size paper, but it keeps reverting to letter (8.5x11) for the view and the print options. When this happens, I change the print setup to legal, then replace the settings in all of my sub-scripts. The script works on my computer, and my assistant's for a while, but then reverts to the letter setting. It started out as one big, nasty script, which I fixed many times. In an application that I'm working on, hundreds of student marks are gathered and displayed in a nice table layout. Average, medians, etc all work fine; however, I would like to take the data to a higher level and now display it as a multi-line graph. Can this be done in FMP, or will I need to port the data to another app? If so, what would the more experienced of you suggest? Thank you for any suggestion.

Dear All, I have installed new IBM All-In-Ones to some of the users in my company, and they have Windows 2000 professional installed on them. The problem that I'm having is that printouts from some of the FileMaker files are not complete, only part of the text on a layout is printed and others are not. I want to beleive that this is a Windows problem, but I have tried from other machines, which are not All-In-One, and which have Windows 2000, and they are printing correctly. I have also tried it from other All-In-One machines which have other operating systems, and they are printing correctly. We have created a database of social studies questions in filemaker that allows teachers to search through and create their own custom tests. The application was started in Filemaker 4.0 for the mac, converted to 5 and then made into a runtime application. One of the layouts in this testbank is "user guide" which has instructions on how to use the application. The instructions are a couple of pages long and have been copied and pasted into editable text fields from pagemaker. While the text shows up fine on screen, I only get two blank pages when trying to print it out. This seems to happen on both the mac and pc platforms. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks,…

I am trying to make a label layout for Avery address labels when I go into layout the predefined labels are grayed out, do I need to reinstall to get the predefined labels or do I need to down load them from some where? It seems I had the predefined labels before but not sure now. I also want to print the same name and address on a whole sheet of labels (30 labels) is there a certain way I have to do this. This is strange one I can't understand: If I use the "sliding left" for a date field, the value gets truncated (I have tried different date formats): it seems to cut on the 9 if the date shows as "01/10/09". If the slide is removed, the date displays ok. (and the field width is wide enough...) Any suggestion?

I've written a script for our database whereby which info from certain fields is collated and then mailed out through the Eudora program. Fonts do not kern the same from PC to MAC. I usually make the file work on a Mac first, then make another layout in the file for the PC version(same file). Then use a script to decide which layout to show or go to based on the status(platform) function.

Hi, I've installed my fmdbase in a network pc/mac that has an NT pc-server with Filemaker Server on it. Merging with filemaker is working ok on my little network (I open the Word doc and activate merge) but seems to be causing problems on this network. Should I install the Merge documents on the server? Or should I install the Word documents locally? How do I refer to fmfiles managed by filemaker server?: I could open the document through filemaker with applescript but this is soooo slow and I very often get error messages! Ok...I'm very new to FileMaker but have been a Mac user since 84..so I know my way around troubleshooting printers and such...here is my problem.. I'm printing a record out of my very small FileMaker database (less than 50 records). The record has maybe 30 fields in it, most of which are actually empty. The layout is nothing fancy...very straight and away...this should rip out of the printer as fast as any one page word document...probably quicker... I've got my Mac connected wireless (Airport) to the network....to print the single record takes a good 5 minutes...it screams out of FM5 but chokes in getting the data from my desktop printer to the actual printer. Greetings All, I'm running network of FMP 3.0v6 clients on Windows NT and 2000 -- no Macs. The files are hosted on an FMP 3.x Server. All of the software & hardware is latest / greatest except for FileMaker. The problem that I am having happens when a client runs a script that contains a print setup step, and the printer that was originally used is no longer available. The script seems to be looking for the old printer and when it can't find the printer it crashes the client. I can fix this by going to each client workstation, choosing an available printer, editing the script and then choosing to replace the print setup. This works fine but it is a lot of work …

Create an unstored calculation field "PageNo" with this formula Status(CurrentPageNumber)+gPageOffset Then use a <<PageNo>> merge field instead of the normal ## page marker. Before printing the second layout, set the global field gPageOffset to the number of pages printed with the previous layout.

Also be aware than FM will only print the lines in a given repetition that are displayed on the layout - if a given rep has 10 lines of data, but only the 1st line is displayed, that is what will be printed.

When I print filemaker reports to my Epson Stylus Photo 700 I get system error 11, which causes system to need to be restarted. I have downloaded and installed the latest Epson drivers -- no effect. I can print from Word or Excel fine to the Epson printer, and I can print from Filemaker fine to an HP deskwriter printer. I have Filemaker 3.0 and Mac OS 7.6. Any suggestions appreciated

I have to update a complex series of related databases. I want to print or, better yet, save to a Word file, all the script steps in 4 databases. I must be insane, because I keep trying the same thing and expecting different results. Oh well, we computer wonks are insane, aren't we? I'll speak for myself. After spooling 21 pages, I repeatedly get the error message that FileMaker can't complete the printing (error -192). I have several (10) databases varying in size from 100K to 5MB. I am able to access data from each of my databases except the largest one. I am documenting a database with a large number of scripts, and want them to print out several scripts to a page, rather than one script to a page. Has anyone been able to do this? P.S. I have tried created an Adobe PDF file from Filemaker 5.5 using Adobe PDF Writer on a Mac G4 (setting the Chooser to Adobe PDF Writer and then printing), with the thought that I could then do OCR on the PDF file so that I can edit it and removed the page breaks. But, when trying the capture tool in Adobe Acrobat 4.0, I get the message "This page has graphics other than images or text on it. It cannot be captured."

I have created a solution to print to an odd printer. The print driver uses a custom page size of 12 X 32. When the layout is put in preview mode it shows a 8 1/2 x 11 vertical page instead of the 12 x 32 horizontal. On FM site they say custom page sizes will not work. Is there any way around this? Can I load a print driver for a larger formatt printer and let it clip the page? The printer did not respond when I tried this. Any ideas would help. Wayne

I'm using Filemaker Pro V5 on a Macintosh. I have a simple adress list with two lines per record. If I have all records or even a few records available in the Browse mode, when I go to the preview mode, only the FIRST record will appear. When I print, each record prints on a separate page. How can I get filemaker to continue to add as many records as will fit on a page. I don't have problems with my old version of filemaker Version 2

We use FMP 3.0v6, we have 2 HP 4500 laserjets. We are starting to migrate our computers from Macs to PCs. Many of our reports are too big to fit on a single sheet of paper without reducing the size. The scaling features works fine on the Macs & Win98 machines, but I can't get it to work on the Win2000 Pcs. I have tried using the HP PCL and Postscript drivers as well as the Adobe PS 4.2?? drivers. None of these options work, changing the percentage or using HP's zoomsmart don't even change the scale in preview mode. Using Adobe's PDFWriter as the printer I can rescale the reports in Preview Mode and Print them correctly to PDF, then print the PDF. This two step pr…

I have been unable to figure this out, so I am appealing for help to the great FMers here. I have a database with 10 records in it. Nine of the fields are small standardized lengths (10-30 characters) but the tenth varies widely (300-30,000 characters, for example). I have created a layout with the smaller fields at the top and the generally-large field at the end. The problem: if necessary, I would like the final field to break at the end of a column and finish at the top of the next column. Hi, I have tried to create a "print" script that takes my colleagues from a "contacts" file to the preview of a letter layout. I have created this layout in the "contacts" file. The problem is, when I get from browse mode to preview mode, Filemaker displays the first record in the "contacts" file. If I choose "print", the active record is printed. This is very confusing. Has anyone vertured into how to turn a FM form into a PDF form. I want to create a script that exports a FM form with data into a PDF form with data. It seems to me the easiest way would be to create a template PDF form the same as my FM form and have a applescript grab the data from FM and place it in the PDF form. I've been trying to figure this out for a couple of days now, and I am now confused and not sure what to do.... I want to save my output to a PDF instead of to the printer. I can do it manually when I get the Print dialog box and check off all the settings (Destination:To File, Save as:Acrobat PDF, etc.) I'm thinking that I would have to use Applescript to hard code these settings....the questions is how do I do that. I have developed a building/home inspection report form in FMPro 5. When outputting to a printer, various scripts jump from layout to layout and print the final report. The average report is 15-18 pages. The problem is printing to Adobe/PDF format; w/ this method, you end up w/ 15 or more different documents. I want to put all the necessary info on one layout so that the document prints as a single document. I have a report layout that in composed of a header, subsummary, grand summary and footer. I've omitted the body of the record. It's designed to tabulate results for various categories and only display the totals. When I switch to preview mode (which is the only place I can view the summary totals), something strange happens. The first line (or couple of lines, depending on the file) displays properly, but the following ones are indented about an inch. If I switch back to browse mode and return to preview, it usually fixes the problem. Win98 FMP4.0v3 I have written several solutions using FMP 4.0v3 developer and they have worked perfectly for years both on networks and single user. Recently all the new printer and drivers cause FM4.0v3 to commit an illegal operation and is shut down (it is usually corrupted and has to be restored). I can substitute an existing printer driver in the Win98 database (example: HP4000 series laser printers using the HP5 driver - this will print perfectly). the problme is that I have hundreds of single users and everytime they buy a new printer, it becomes a problem. I have layouts that look perfect and print perfect on my Mac but when I use the same layout on my Windows 98 machine the fields are not lined up and if doesnt print correctly. Can this be fixed? I'm setting up a layout for printing out cheques (that's Canadian for checks ). It seems to me that at one time you had to use pre-numbered forms because the OCR text at the bottom (Bank ID, Acct. No. and cheque No.) was printed with magnetic ink so that the bank's scanner could pick up the info. Is that obsolete technology now? For better control, we want to have Filemaker assign the cheque number, rather than force the user to enter a number into the database from the cheque form. Just wondering what others have done in this regard.

Help! All of the new fields I'm adding to my layout are getting printed with a border on the bottom and right hand side. If the field is empty the border doesn't print. All border format boxes ARE deselected. I'm not sure if it's a bug as I created the database a long time ago (FM2 initially!) and am only recently making modifications with FM5.0. Any ideas? This one really isn't a FileMaker issue, but it could come up in FileMaker, so I'm hoping that someone here might know the answer. How can I email raw HTML in Outlook express and have the recipient see the formatted page rather than the HTML? I know this is possible, because I receive bulk emails that do this. Hello Everyone I have two questions. first, how can I set up in any of my dbases so that all correspondence ( printed matter or emails & faxes from within FM5) can be archieved. As it stands I can do all of the above but no record of what has been done is available.?? Is there a way to auto send an email from FMP db after clicking "Submit" button from web page? I've got everything working with CDML but can't figure out a way to auto send the email to someone after record has been submitted. I have a database with 'item', 'run name', 'tags run' and 'time'. I also have a calculation for tags per hour(tags run/time)unstored. I have 2 summary fields for total 'tags run SUM' and 'time SUM' these summary fields show the correct data. But if I create a field called 'labels per hour SUM' and make it a calculation of (tags run SUM / time SUM) the result is for the entire found set, what I want is for the individual items to have their own totals, what do I do? I have the database sorted by 'item', then 'run name' and I have the report parted out as header,sub sum item,sub sum run name,sub sum item,footer. Can anyone tell me why the first calc below works but the 2nd fails to put the e-mail address into outlook? Hello A quick Q: I have a "notes" field in one of my dbases. and when I go to print the layout which it is a part of. Only what is visible will print. How do I get FM5 to print all the contents of this field by continuing on another page automatically etc. I know in Quarkxpress all I need to do is set a link to a text box etc. but I have not found anything like this function in filemaker? I have a form that I want to only print the current record. On Mac, LaserWriter 8 (8.7.1) I have checked Print: "Current Record" in the print dialog, hit "save settings" and everything prints correctly, but the next time I open up the database and print this same form my print settings default to printing all of my records and my page orientation gets changed. Has anyone gotta a fix or solution? Thanks, Any help is appreciated...

I want to create 2 different forms ..... one that prints using the portrait orientation, the other that prints using landscape orientation. Is there a way to make FileMaker Pro 5 remember the orientation of each form without changing the orientation on the Print Setup dialog box each time I print one of these forms? I was trying to make changes to the built-in web page in FM (change the background color and add an image). According to the Dreamweaver, the generator of the webpage is located in the folder called FMRes. However, I could't find it anywhere in my system. Hmmm----don't get it I have a G4 with lotsa RAM allocated to FM -----to a HP Laserjet5000 series --with lotsa RAM running FM server over a TCP/IP network----most everything works great---I have a large color .jpeg (90 Mgs) that I have NO problem printing to any of my printers using Photoshop 6 or InDesign or other programs----- Problem: When I import this large .jpeg file to FM for adjusting to specific layout it works fine ---UNTIL I try and print ---and then WOW ----super hard crashes---to printer and G4--- sometimes crashes---sometimes prints out blank paper--sometimes prints out a sheet with large letters that say "JPEG ERROR -53" I have allocated much RAM to al…

The descenders are being cut off when previewing and printing. It only happens to some fonts. When using the same fonts in other software I don't have this problem. So the problem must be with FMP and not the font. Does anyone have an answer? Thanks Mike

Hi Everyone, The manual, searches, FM support, phoning etc - all of no help! When i use "send mail" to send a bulk mailer, not all of the contacts come out into Eudora ... tried zapping the PRAM, cloning the DB, re-making it, making a new DB with only a few fields and importing those ... nothing works, wail, sob, "kill myself" Has anyone had any problems of this sort and figured it out ... or any ideas ... perhaps if i was using another email app, but the guys on the end of the phone say Eudora has no issues with FM. I have a service request form that has two fields (service request number, and service description) and I need to have space for the service person to write what has been completed. I need a line accross the page. So I made a couple copies of the description field (which may have one to six lines of text) and set the text color to white, set the bottom border line to black and set the sliding based on all above. Worked like a dream on my printer. When I installed on site, the laser printer would print the white characters over the black text. I work for a small school district and I have developed a solution using FM5 and Lasso which allows elementary teachers to input student report cards on the web. The output (paper) is strictly from FM. This solution is in testing right now, and will go into production next fall. Printing is my big concern. I know I will do a batch print at report card time, but what about one-off printing? (I have no plans to allow anyone access to the FM databases) My best idea is to run a second print job to write to PDF files rather than a printer, and then distribute the appropriate records to each school for storage and retreival, as necessary. Hi, I have selected the records that I need to print. For each record selected I want to be able to select a layout (from a choice of about 20 layouts) and the number of times this record need to be printed (default being 1). Finally I want to minimise the number of sheets needed to print: most likely by grouping all the records that need to be printed using the same layout (certain layouts fit 2 to a page, others 4, others 6, 8 and 12). Am I dreaming? or can this be done? Thanks for any input you might have.

I'm trying to find out if you can use a single-user FileMaker Pro file (4.x) as a data source from Microsoft Word 97 (Windows 95). I know in Microsoft Word 98 and Word 2001 (both for the MacOS), you can set up under your Tools Menu > Data Source Manager (Mail Merge Manager) a FMP file as a data source. So my question is, can you do the same thing from within Word 97 for Windows? What about Word 2000? I know I could always export a tab-delimited file, but my client wants to access the data in her FMP file directly from within Word 97 for some very complex forms she already has templates of. To transfer all the data from those forms onto a FMP layout would be a nightmar…

I have a customer that needs to print 1,400-1,500 labels at a time. They used to use ImageWriters. Well they are dying. Does anyone know of a good dot matrix printer that will support LocalTalk. I have tried the Epson LQ-870 and we are having problems with the labels ligning up. It will print good till it reaches the typical preforation on a 9 x 11 paper. I would really appreciate any help.

I've got a report that has a title header that includes a description of what the report is covering. Below this description field are the column headings for the report. Since the description field could be long or short, I made enough room for it to be rather long and then defined the field and the column headings to slide up based on All above, and also reduce the size of the enclosing part. When I view the report in preview mode, the description field does seem to slide up, because the column headings that are below it appear just below the text in it. Hello, Im trying to print a found set of records in a list. There is a header then a body that I've made the height of one row with a record. In list view I only see one row at a time; same with form view. In table view you see all the rows of the found set and all print. Hey, I am working on a memebership database, and we have like 20 letters that follow similar formats but have to say different things. My idea was to put all the letters in a related database and link to them via a pull down value list that is compiled based on the titles of the letters. So I pick a letter title in the main database, and it merges in the letter, which works great, until I put a merge field the body of the letter. I know why it isn't working (filemaker only processes the original merge field and not the merge field that is in the letter) I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to a way around this? Nathaniel

ok.. i know this question has been asked before.. but i need to ask it again?? is the only way to make sure you get all the text in a large text field to print to make the field large enough to handle all teh text and then you sliding to make it smaller... i think filemaker needs a sliding option that will make a text field grow to handle all the text that is in it... i mean i may never know how much info some might put in this field.. so what do i do.. i make the field 4 pages long, but i just know someone will come along and put 5 pages of info into that field.. i know it will happen?? why?? because thats my luck.. so please tell me there is another way around…

I have an insurance claims business. I am currently passing information using email and attached files. Daily I will create an export file for each field agent who has new claims to be processed. The export file is prenamed. I then launch a second set of scripts to send the email to the adjuster. This means that I have had to specify the prenamed file in the script. I used the status error code to skip those adjusters who had no new files. The system works fine except that I have to create new filenames and add to the master script to be able to add new adjusters. I will likewise have to delete adjusters that have left my business. I recently inherited a database from a third or fourth party. It is a 700 strong database of names and addresses. It has fields for name, work address, work address 2, work city, work state, work zip, mailing address, mailing address city, mailing address state, mailing address zip. While everyone on the list has one address, not everyone has the two, and in some cases the mailing address and work address is the same. I need to send a letter to all the names.
