I have been trying to create a checkbox without any success. I want to create a little box where the user will click on it and the box will turn into a check mark. In MS Access is called a Yes/No field. I'm sure FileMaker will have something similar. By the way, I went to help and couldn't get any direction regarding a checkbox. Side note: Several times I found the help to be completely helpless! Sorry. Evan P.

I just moved into this job and I inherited a FM 4.1 application with 33 databases. The system has been tracked over by my 4-5 predecessors to the point it's really muddied - it's barely half relational any more. I'm considering upgrading to the latest & greatest FM, but I'd like to get a handle on what I've got first. Are there any documentation tools that'll help me out with identifying scripts, layouts, relationships and the rest? Oh, and does the newest FM have a way to export styled text? Thanks

Hello My company is looking into a database solution for the majority of our inner office forms and memos etc. I have been researching FMP and was wondering about the functionallity of FMP Unlimited. Of particular interest is whether a user accessing the database from the web is able to create, modify, and delete records on the database or whether the database can only be used to view data and perform searches. We need to have a database where clients can create records without having a local copy of the application on their desktop. In addition, what is the quality of the layouts in web form? If you make a layout in FMP, how good is its representation…

We have a small web site using WebStar 4.3 and Filemaker 5 unlimited/web companion with a few custom published web pages for searching for classes in a catalog. For some reason, Filemaker unexpectedly and seemingly at random, "disappears". IE it does not show up in the finder, but when I try to restart it I get the "too many licensed users" (we have only one license for unlimited) and I have to restart the machine. I have enabled the error logs to see what pages are being used when it crashes, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. No consistent searches being performed. The interval between crashes ranges from a few hours to a few days-- it doesn't seem to be…

When I login FileMakePro4 from a workstation on the network to the server I've this problem that layout pop-up menu in status panel under Browse mode doesn't display the list of layout any more. But it's OK on other workstation using same login (superuser privileges. Even I reinstall FM4 it still doesn't display the list of layouts from layout pop-up menus in status panel of browse mode. I'm using FMPRO 2.1 for a simple database of my record collection (anyone looking for the hits?) In my LAYOUT, I have fields for the date and the Page #. I can see the date on the screen but all I see is PAGE - with no page number. Since I don't want to print the WHOLE thing out at once, and will want to print parts at various times, what do I need to do or add to be able to know what PAGE I'm on. Thanks....NORM

Can someone please tell us how to backup files on our Filemaker 2.1 program. We have NEVER been able to figure this out. I want to backup onto a floppy. There is no backup icon and I've tried the "save as" and that didn't work either. I don't want everything that has been entered, just a certain new file. Thanks.

Hi, I am building an application for my fathers company, he has 4 people wishing to access it (read&write -- via TCP/IP peer-peer) on a non-intensive basis. My questions: My application consists of 12 database files. Reading the blurb I notice that for FM (non-server) the maximum number of database files shareable is 10. What does this mean in reality? Will the host machnine only share 10 of the 12 files it has open? If so, which 10? My father is running on a very tight budget (hence why he has his son building an application in spare time!) and cannot stretch to the Server edition ($1000). Any thoughts or help? James

Hello, In the Dutch version of FileMaker Pro 5.5 for Mac OS X, the help system seems to lack a Dutch index. I can search for English terms only (no Dutch terms will be found), but then it will display the corresponding Dutch help info. Is anyone else also experiencing this problem, and does anyone have a suggestion how to solve it? Any help is much appreciated! Dirk-Jan

I have been testing ODBC with the 5.5v1 demo release on Win 2k. Unfortunately, for some reason unknown to me, the remote data access companion will not install. As you probably know this file is called fmrdac.fmx and should be installed into the "Settings" folder. Each attempt (5 total) I do the complete install but this companion does not get installed. Can someone please send me the file so I can complete my testing? I am trying to build a First Class RAD app to connect to a filemaker database and want to know if it will work before I purchase an upgrade to 5.5 Thanks in advance.

I have some users in a hospital connected to FM Pro Server 5 via FM Pro 5 Client running on NT workstations. I noticed that for some users, when their default printer is a local HP inkjet printer, it causes the response time they get from FM Pro to be extremely slow. If I change their default printer to a networked Laser printer, their FM Pro application flies along at a very respectable speed. Any suggestions on how they can stay connected to their local inkjet printer and get normal responsiveness from their application ?

My first post! 1. I am running an ancient (1994) version of Filemaker Pro. I began with Windows 3.1 and just kept loading the source disks onto Windows 95 and now 98, as I got new computers. I keep about 7,000 book descriptions in FM. Is there anything I should be aware of before I buy the latest version of FM? I'm on a Win 2000 machine, running FmPro 5.0v3. Occasionally I'll get the following message when I try to open a Filemaker file by double-clicking on a shortcut icon. "The temp file "A2k 02-03.fp5" could not be created on the disk. Use a different name, make more room on the disk, or make it writeable." (There's an OK button.) The message appears before the password box comes up. I'm working off a 18.6 gig hard drive, with 15 gigs free, so I really have plenty of room for my 700k file. No server involved. After I click the OK button, I go to the File menu, click "open," choose my file from the list, and everything is hunky-dory from there on. What's …

I have been try to abort scripts from the keybouard using command-period or esc. But none of these work. The scripts don't have the abort script in them. I have tried clean db files and old in MacOS X and the scripts will not abort if I tell them to. The same db scripts will abort in MacOS 9. Has anyone seen this in FM 5.5v2 MacOS X.

With my employer finally updating to 5.5 recently, I finally started using 5.5 full time. To my chagrin, I find that Toolbars are not supported on the Mac side of the street. Do any of the guru's here know why it isn't supported? Are there any rumors/news as to when this feature will be fixed? Thank you for any news.

I need to use special characters out of the font Lucida Sans Unicode in an FM database. MS Word allows me to allocate shortcut keys off the keyboard to type them into a document. Is there anything similar for FM so that I can get those characters into text in FM fields? I seem to be limited to only the characters that are accessed through the standard keyboard. I would ideally also want web published pages to display the font and special characters also. Can anyone point me to a plug-in or a solution?

FileMaker was running fine for a while with Mac OS X, but suddenly it has stopped working. I've not been able to think of anything which might have triggered the change. The symptoms are that it will launch and open files, but when it displays the file's window it gets as far as drawing the window border, title bar and white content-background, but then stops and sits with a spinning rainbow cursor forever (or at least half an hour before force-quitting FileMaker). All we can get is empty windows with spinning cursors. We've re-installed FileMaker from scratch with no luck. Hello Everyone! installed filemaker pro 5.5 on PCs & Macs. I am only able to connect to the host (filemaker server) from PCs. I am running a small (1.4KB) database with FM 5.0v1 on a PC with W2KPro. It is a PIII 333Mhz machine with three quarters of the 4GB disk space free and the max of 256RAM. When I make a compressed copy of the dbase, I get this error message: "There may not be enough disk space to complete this operation. FM will not be able to open the file if this operation fails. Proceed anyway?" I do proceed, and all is OK - but am I letting myself in for future problems? I couldn't find anything about this in FM support. ...and the solution on FileMaker's support site does not work! http://www.filemaker.com/ti/107897.html There is no "Cancel" button, only a "Stop" button. Pressing that does not produce a navigation dialog, only a warning about canceling the installation, then returns to the main installer window. is there any way the when filemaker opens a file with from a script or portal that it does not use the same password to open the file by this i mean that i have a password for one file which allows every one full access to the records but a second file i want limited to browse only but with one person that has a separate password to beable to add rec but when it opens it opens this file with the first password and does not give the oppportunity to enter the higher password help

Strangest thing: I cannot delete records in my Web-enabled, FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited databases--UNLESS I use the Web companion to do so. I have several databases set without passwords so that users may freely access them through the Web server. If I pull up a database in FMP, select a record by clicking on it, and then click on the Delete Record button, nothing happens. I get NO "Permanently delete this ENTIRE record?" prompt--as one normally would. Nothing. If I access the same database using Instant Web Publishing, however, it WILL let me delete records. Also, if I copy this database file onto a different computer, then I CAN delete records. Any idea what's up?…

I work for a small business which uses Quickbooks for time-tracking and bookkeeping purposes. We also Filemaker to track our projects. Time is tracked in both applications which adds up to time-consuming time-tracking. They are happy to do away with using Quickbooks if they can find a way to have filemaker perform the same functions Quickbooks does as far as reports, calculations, etc. I was assigned to the projecta dn whereas I have database management experience, I have never worked in Fielmaker. I recently downloaded the new "FileMaker Solution Framework" from the FileMaker Web sight. I would like to know what you think about it as a template to build a custom solution. I just had a problem which is probably simply an error on my part, but I wanted to check. I had two versions of my project in separate folders (12 DBs in each folder). While working on the layouts, FM 5.5 suddenly began opening related files in the wrong folder. When I looked in the window menu, I had two of everything, wasn't sure which ones I was changing, etc. The thing that worries me is that this is an industrial DB which will be frequently backed up. Is it possible for FM Server (which I was not running at the time) to mistakenly track down the wrong DBs (in the wrong folder) and serve up obsolete info? Or is that just a FM 5.5 problem? ugh.. i have just upgraded to a p4 (is that really an upgrade??) but i noticed that filemaker seems to have some issues... every now and then while I am resizing a box or a field filemaker will go spinning out of control into some sort of internal endless loop which send my entire system halting. it's not really crashed, just eating up CPU cycles so fast I cant get a work in edgewise and have to usually just flip the power to get back to work. of course this corrupts my databases which is always fun. anyone else having probs with p4 or seen this problem? i worked for years on a p-3 with no major problems... hmmm thanks!

I'll try to explain my problem the best I can, but before I do, it only occurs while using the computers at my school (where the file is shared). When it was taken off the network for me, and I took it home, I did not experience these problems. I don't handle the networking side to the server, but I would like to tell the man who does, what to try to fix this. When people are using the database, it will freeze up, after changing the cursor to a coffee cup. Other times, it won't allow new entries into the database. And most recently, it will not allow me (using the "all access" password) to edit things, via ScriptMaker, etc. which I could do before. To my knowled…

I have been asked to create a database that allows users on a WAN to transfer files via FileMaker. The files are going to be relatively small files 50K or smaller. One end of the process is going to enter a job number and other info and then attach the txt file to that record. The other end will find the job number they need to work and then detach the txt file. I have FM Server 5.5 running on a mac. Is this possible in FM or do I need a plug-in. Thanks, Brian

I'm in the market for a new laptop & most are now pre-instaled with Windows XP home edition. The FM website says that they are not testing anything but FM Pro 5.5 with XP and that all other versions use XP at their own risk. I use FM Pro 5 & don't really want to spend another $249 US just to upgrade to 5.5. Has anyone found any problems using FM Pro 5 with Windows XP??? Art PS> I think it's kind of greedy for Filemaker not to test all versions of Filemaker with new Operating systems.

Just posted new topic in Security issues re dmaged files. Done a search and not encouraged by what I read. I don't think I have suitable back-up. We have a FMPro database (v5.0) and want to drap & drop Microsoft Word documents (icons) into a FMPro text field. Ideally, this action would immediately convert the document to FM and paste it in an open format into the field. I tried dropping the Word doc icon onto the FM icon, which launches FM... but then delivers an error message of "not enough memory". This happens even if no other applications are running and I dedicated 60mb of RAM to the application. Any suggestions? Is there a text converter or apple script I need?

Hello, We have a file that was FileMaker Pro 4.0 and was converted to 5.5. When you look at the fields in Layout it shows the Font sizes as the correct ones (12pt, 14pt ) but when you print it, it is 200 to 300% larger (24pt, 42pt). Help, these are timecards and my time is running out to resolve this. Thank you, Kim

We keep getting "damaged file" or "corrupt file" errors on MacOSX/FM5.5 machines accessing a FM database located on a PC server. The errors arise after the files have been backed up or copied to laptops for field work. There seems to be no difficulty unless and until the files are copied from or changed on the server. The remedy is to perform a Recovery. This has become a daily event after the overnight backup runs or the sales reps copy the database. As an experiment, accessing the database with a Mac running OS9 and FM5.0 seems to work fine after the backup run..... Curious! I have a small mixed network (Mac and PC). I am running FM server 5.5 on a dedicated G4 which is running OS10.1.2. I have several users connected using FM 5.0 with OS9.1 and I am using client 5.5 on my G4 400mhz laptop, which is running OS10.1.2 My unit is very slow compared to other users. Look-up fields take as long as 15 seconds to activate, but are instant on other units. Also, when switching between screens it takes 5-10 seconds for the screen to appear - begins with white screen with spinning disk. Any suggestions?

Hi all. I'm entering a client's data into a database - the largest section of this is 4000 records holding images and keywords. The problem I'm having is that FileMaker keeps bugging out on me. It seems that if I enter over around 200 records without closing and reopening the file, the database becomes corrupted, and I have to recover it. Which doesn't always work. The data set is quite large - two small JPEGs (about 30K each) and one large JPEG (about 300K) plus various text fields. Is FMP flipping out over the size of the data? Thanks. Stanley

Is is possible to have a portal display the records of another database without using a relationship? I have an office-wide contacts database that would be used to help populate project specific contact databases. Something like a layout for the office-wide list, and a layout for the project list, but with no real relationship between the two. Since we have consultants that we use on multiple projects, their records should appear in both places, as well as have some different info for that consultant for each project. Hope I'm making sense.

I am going to be printing 10,000 personalised letters from FMP on a high-end postscript colour laser, via OSX.10.1.2. I'm printing the whole letter, so I want to include inline images. These are going to be large 300dpi colour pictures. What does FMP5.5/OSX support? Can I use PDF (it is the replacement for PICT as the default format in OSX)? Can I use TIFF and EPS, as I would printing from Quark Xpress? Or should I stick with the widely-supported PICT? I'm after the best image quality I can get here. I have inherited a FileMaker Pro 4.0v1 application. Unfortunately it comes with no documentation for FileMaker or the application. I made a change to the application and need to update the user's .EXE file, however I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create the .EXE (runtime?) file for the user. I have a running database for a client that uses the Troi Grabber plug-in. The database is a log for stills for a production company. The grabber plug-in is used to grab images from a Beta deck or scanner. Everything was working great until the database file exceeded 2Gigs. I was not aware of the 2Gig file limit, and now must fix this problem. As far as sizes goes, the database will need to accomadate (eventually) 250,000+ records, each with it's own image attatched. Does anybody have a suggestion? I have no problem with capturing the image, then saving the image as a sperate file, then using the "store only a reference to the file," but how can I do this? I am tearing my hair out trying to make the records which match Last Name and First Name with existing records result in an update of all the data that has been changed. When I set it up as it seems to indicate in the "books", indicating update matching records in current found set and add remaining records, even when I am importing a minorly altered COPY, so I know there are matching records, it doesn't happen. I have made First Name and Last Name be the "matching fields" and everything else is straight replace if those match..... Hi, The following is one of the paragraph of readme file during intallation of FMP 5.5 "....It is possible to have both FileMaker Pro 5 and FileMaker Pro 5.5 installed on the same system with unique preference sets. In Windows, however, uninstalling FileMaker Pro 5 will remove preference settings for both versions, and all FileMaker Pro 5.5 settings will revert to defaults....." That's mean:in Windows, if we uninstall 5.0 AFTER install 5.5, then FMP 5.5 does not run properly because all the preference settings are removed. Is it right? i'm converting TIFF files into GIF format using Photoshop then i tried to import them into FM 5 and sometime computer crash or the GIF image is corrupted (only lines are appear in the FM fields) My files are on a FM server and when the computer crash the file is no longer available on the server... hi, we are currently running FM Pro Unlimited 5 as a web server for a small database. It's the only thing running on that system, I would like to set it up as a Windows 2000 service. We purchased the software back in August, before Unlimited 5.5 was released. I thought I saw then that 5.5 would include running as a service, but I don't see it mentioned as a feature now that it has been released. The hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2550, software is Win2000 server. So my questions are: 1) does version 5.5 support running as a service? 2) my alternative is to put FM in the startup group and have the system automatically logon. Any better ways to do this? thank you!

Hi, I'm using the following calcuation to automatically generate a six digit PIN number: Round(Random* 1000000, 0) This calcuation works fine. However, I have noticed that sometimes this calcuation will generate a PIN with ONLY 5 digits (rather than 6.) Q: Is there a better method to calculate a six digit PIN? Thanks.

Hey kids. A long long time ago, when I was downloading every FM solution that I could find on the Web, I found one that listed all of the html colour codes (eg. #FFFFF0, etc.) and showed a block of each colour. Since I knew nothing about html, I trashed this useless file. Well, now I'd really like to find this wonderful file again. Does anybody have it, or know where it is? Thanks. Paul

I recently upgraded from FMP4.1 to FMP5.5. I just went to work on some ideas for a FileMaker-centric Web page I wanted to build (allegedly improved Web publishing was one of the reasons I upgraded). I find that unless I'm missing something, there is no support or documentation in 5.5 for custom Web publishing at all. In other words, FileMaker decided to DELETE from an UPGRADE a valuable and useful feature of their earlier product. Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me I'm blind. Tell me I'm missing something. But don't tell me these guys could be this stupid.

Running Mac OS9.1 upgrading FMPro 5.5v1 to 5.5v2 with the FM updater. It appears to update the app correctly, creating a file called FileMaker Pro.old and a new FileMaker icon appears but then it stops and says, "An error prevented the update from completing. I am having difficulty setting up FMP 5 Unlimited on IIS 5 and would really appreciate some help. One of the main reasons for having difficulty is that FMP is not two-byte enabled so I have to use the Japanese version. This means that all the manuals etc., are in Japanese too. I am not sure if I should be upset with Filemaker, Microsoft or both. I depend heavily on Filemaker for a number of solutions used in my company and others I have written for associates. Because Macs are very rare in Kenya and Tanzania, I have been using PCs for most of my work and have a number of solutions in 4.1 and 5.0. Because 5.0 won't allow editing a 4.1 file and leave it available to 4.1 users (and not all of my associates want to spend the money for 5.0) I have to run both on my computers. Just updated to MAC OS9.2.2 (without MAX OS X, i did not install it) Now when I double click on a FMP5 file, FMP 5.0v3 lauches but does not load some on the plug-ins in the FMP5 extension folder. On a Mac OS 9.2, double clicking on any filemaker data file results in the message: "FileMaker Pro could not be launched because of incorrect installation, missing system components or insufficient memory. Please see FileMaker Pro documentation." I have over 500Megs of memory, and if I launch FileMaker Pro 5.5 and then open the data file, it opens correctly. I have had a previous FileMaker Pro version (4.1) on the system. I removed it without solving the problem. Hi, This is a difficult one to explain. We have a seperate customer database for each customer. We can't put them all in one DB as there would be 100 thousand records and would take forvever to sort. How could we change from having 50 DBs to just 1 or 10 etc??? Thanks, James.

I've successfully installed FM 5.5 for OS X (10.1.1 on a Dual 533) and launched it with no problems. However when I try to run the new updater, it stalls at a dialog box that says "One moment please..." which is just after it has quit all applications. FM 5.5 resides in an Apps folder I've created; it does no good to move FM 5.5 to the Apple "Applications" folder. Restarting doesn't help. A "Force Quit" is required to exit the Installer. I also installed a OS 9.x Classic version off FM 5.5 and updated it with no hitches. Any suggestions? Thank You! Omrudi

I'm contemplating purchasing FMD5.5. I have been working on a product for some time for in-house use and now want to turn it into a product and creating a stand-alone is clearly the right way to go. But I have two questions for which I can't find answers anywhere that I've looked. 1. Can users of the stand-alone application define new layouts and/or change existing layouts or is that functionality "locked out'? 2. Could several users of individual copies of the stand-alone application share the same data files over a network or are the files somehow compiled with the app, precluding that use? Thanks.

My question is: are there any problems that my crop up in the future with my current system? Is this system compatable with 10-25 users on a LAN? Is there a better way? I have a LAN with several guests connected to FMP5Server host computer (all macs) for the FMP5 database files, one of which holds the "referrence" for scanned images. The images are scanned by one of the guest computers with vistascan software and saved on a separate computer (scan host) that is on the LAN and the reference to is is saved into a containor field in one of my database files.
