I'm trying to write a script that: enters Find Mode Does a Set field on Field "Date" from a gobal field "gobaldate" I then want it to find all dates that are greaterthan "gobaldate" So I thought on the set field script I could put "> " & gobaldate But since it's a date field it will not allow any thing other than a date. If I make my date fileds text it works but I wan't to view my fields as dates (11/16/00). Is there a work around for this problem? Thanks Devin

A question for the experts: If a file is corrupted, and you use the recover command should you then export the data records to a backup copy of your solution? Could some of the layouts also be corrupted? Most importantly, how does one handle recovering a corrupted file if you are doing a kiosk solution?

Is it possible to have a field that displays a calendar? Ideally the user would click on the field, a calendar would pop up, and the user would click on a date and the date would then fill the field. Anyway to get this done? Thanks! RV

Hi there, My problems is following: I have FMPro 5 -programs running in two computers. Another box has the database inside and acts as a server, and this database should be accessed from another computer. I have made many many connections inside the LAN, but now the problem is that this connection should be made over the Big Net = Internet. We tried it, selected "Open..." from the File menu and then clicked "Hosts" -> Specify IP and entered the IP of "server" computer. The FM shows that it's connecting somewhere, but finally there was no databases shown at the list. This is mysterious... When we will share the databases via Web Companion, they can be accessed. The company that I work for is interested in web enabling various databases. Our web servers are Netscape Enterprise Server 2.0 with NES 3.5.1 installed. The operating system on the server is Irix 6.4 (Unix). Does anyone if we can install and run Filemaker our current system or would we need to purchase a new server or operating system. I am not a server/operating system techie so any help would be greatly appreciate!

I have an inventory database in FMPro 5 and want to keep a history of who checks out various pieces of equipment. What I would like to do is to keep the current checkout information in the file, but write the checkout history to another file or field. I haven't a clue about how to go about this. I'm obviously new at FM but I thought I did well in creating a Checkout Report using a button that performs a find script.

Hi developper, Just let you know that FM 5 have limitation in the size of your "programming code" (large number of script, define fields, links and layouts). Here is my story with FM 5 for Windows, i created a solution with 19 files and one of my file have more then 1300 different scripts, more then 180 differents layouts, more then 500 fields and more then 300 links. The problem is you cannot created a new script or modify an existing one. Plus you get a bonus when you try to print FM crash... Help! I just got filemakerpro5 for the new project we are working on and I know it can do wonders, but for now I cannot do even little things. I have numerous excel databases, each one representing a set of people and their status for every day of the week. Some of the people stay around for a while, others leave right away. I was able to convert my databases to filemaker, but how do I merge the files, so that if there is new information in the fields, it is updated, and if there is not, it is not updated, and new records are added. I am so frustrated, I read the whole manual and looked at all help files, nothing makes sense. Please Help.

Recently none of my plug-ins or extensions won't load. Which means no TCP/IP, no WC and none of the cool plugins i have (mainly from Troi) will load. Here's a little background. Up until this all happened, i have had to launch FMP with by launching an actual file in order to have all the extensions load correctly. When i launched just the app, they failed to load. A few days ago i download the demo version of the .mail.it plug-in by Dacons. THE PLUG IN SUCKS DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. . . it loaded but the plug-in didn't work correctly. . . interesting enough i received an email a day later that informed me that the version i downloaded was experiencing problems…

I have a database running over a FileMaker Server and when changes are made on one computer, they are not showing up on the other computer until someone quits out of the application and reopens it. I think it has to do with the script that is running because it is changing the status of a record to move it to a different portal and needs to be refreshed to complete the transaction in the current window. I guess it doesn't work the same way once you add the network aspect to it. Is there a script I could run that would refresh the window every couple of minutes? I should note though that the "refresh" command didn't seem to do it when I was testing it. It seemed that I …

Hello, I recently rebooted our FM 5 Server box (G3) as a regular operation, and now some clients are having problems logging back into it. 90% of the users can login just fin;, but for some, when they try to open a file, it asks for a password and then just hangs. We tried rebooting the server again, checking the network settings, and every other obvious change and it still doesn't work for a few users. If anyone has had this before or knows what's wrong, contact me! Thanks!

Hi to all. I have purchase order database related to order details database(OrderDet). I am trying to write scripts that copy product list (from Product database) to order details portal of my purchase order database. I defined relation(PRD) to Product d/b from order d/b using global field and use Set Field["OrderDet::PRDname","PRD::Name"]. Unfortunately it copies just first record from Product d/b. Also I can't delete records(portalrow) in my portals(using scripts). Is there anyway to display product list in my OrderDet portal in grouped view by categories. I can display categories in front of every product but it looks clumsy. Any ideas? Thanks

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a script. I would like this script to open another file with information that is assocaited with this file and if there is no info. related I would like a field from the original copied into the first field of the second file. This would allow me to enter data that is related to this file or view the inforamtion that had been previously entered. I have a relationship set up but I would like to have the field copied over automatically if there is a new record to be entered. I hope this is clear.

I have a solution in which clients can order up to 50 different items. I have a calculation field that corresponds to each order field that will show the description of what they ordered. For example, they put an X or a quantity (2, 5, etc. ) in a field called "Item1." In order for us to have easy reference without looking to our reference sheet, i have a field "descItem1" that is a calculation: if(IsEmpty(Item1),"","Item one description"). I have the script step "Insert Picture []" nested within an If...End If loop (also "Insert QuickTime []", but the same thing happens). Whenever the step is called, it first opens a dialog box "Sound Record" which prompts me to record up to 30 seconds of sound; when i cancel out of it, i am then prompted with a windows explorer to locate the picture i want to import. If the same script step is not in an IF...End If loop, it works fine. I've recently exported data from another source into an Excel spreadsheet. The exporting program limited export fields to 255 (and so does Excel). Now I have three excel files that I would like to rejoin all 600 fields back into a single Filemaker file. I have simply opened the 1st Excel doc and converted to a filemaker doc-all went fine. I can't seem to find a way to import (and thus create) the field names of the remaining two files. If I can just get the fields into the existing filemaker file then I can easily import the records of each file (mapping). Please tell me to calm down and get a grip because this is so easy..... This problem involves three databases. One is a purchase order data base. The second is a line item database for the purchase orders. The third is a project database. The way it is set up now, the first database (purchase orders) has repeating fields for the items purchased. But what I want to do is create another database, the second one only dealing with the line items and is related by the purchase order number. I'm working with a media database. It's already got a lot of relationships (staff, media, various codes,etc.). I want to be able to save many lists by subject. What I've come up with is to make a new DB called List Names. Then I make a clone of the staff file with a field called list name. I wanted to make it a global field but this is giving me a problem, too. So I replaced all with the list name ("A") in the 1st clone. A is the 1st record in List Names DB. Now, to create the A list, I'm exporting names from the staff file into the clone, and each time I create a new list (clone), I create a new entry ("B" etc.) in the List Names DB. Follow me so far? Somebody please help me. I am a sound editor with sound fx on cd. The sound fx info (name, cd number etc) are on a cd database (Filmaker 5)supplied by the makers of the sound fx cd's. I want to load my sound fx onto harddrive, but instead of having to name every sound effect, is there away of stamping the info from the cd database onto the harddrive?. i.e can I tell my pc-these 100 sounds are from cd 1 which has 100 sound effects thus the listing of 100 sounds is transfered into the pc and my 100 sounds(in the pc) are named as per the 100 sounds in the database??.Can anyone in cyberworld help?

I've got a file with a report layout that has two sub-summary parts. One is sorted by a persons name and the other is sorted by classes that person has taught. So I get a person's name, followed by summary information about each class they are in. Sometimes when the report is printed, the natural page break falls between a person's name and their first class. I want to avoid this. I want to say to FileMaker "If a page break occurs after the first sub-summary part, force one before it instead" or "Never allow a page break between the first sub-summary part and the second." For some time now, whenever I double-click any FM4 document icon I receive the following error message: "This file cannot be opened because it does not belong with this solution." Conversely, when I launch FM4 (Mac) and then open the document via the Open command, the file opens with no problem. Does anyone know why I'm unable to open my FM4 docs by normal double-clicking? I am designing a DB for Reader Service Cards. I am allowing the user to click on several values for one field. (i.e, 1, 30, 40, etc.). Also, on the mac, can I set up filemaker pro as a calendar to be changed by web users? Basically I can't figure out how to set it up. Each day a record and the hours the fields? I have a multiple part question. I am setting up a Job Log Database for our Creative Services group. Our clients could be any of our internal departments. Here's a good one... I have a database that was made as an address/phone book type thing. Nice and simple, all is well. Until the boss wants it printed. It needs to be printed in a booklet form. Try to imagine this, it's a bit hard to explain in wriing: Print one entry on each half of a sheet of paper (landscape orientation), on both sides of the paper, then you stack all the pages, fold it in half, and Voila! you have a booklet. I have managed to get it to print on both halves of the paper (printing in columns) and on both sides of the paper (flip the paper over, stick it back into the printer), but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to make it end up in…

I've installed FM Pro 5 on a brand new networked Dell Windows 2000 box as local admin. And FM fires up without any problem. But when I try to fire up FM as an ordinary (network) user FM gets as far displaying the word 'initialize' in the bottom left-hand corner of the splash screen and freezes, with the hard-drive working overtime. When I go to close the application I'm told FM has stopped responding. The documentation says this can happen as the result of a corrupted font file and to delete the font FM freezes at. But I can't get beyond 'initialize' to see any font names. Any ideas/workarounds/solutions appreciated. David Smith

Forgive me if this question's been asked. I administer a configuration that makes use of FileMaker Pro Server on one machine and FileMaker Pro Unlimited on another. The databases are all on the Server machine. All web interface files are on the Unlimited machine. This is on all on NT. I set up access for users to their web stuff so that they have control over changing that interface. The complaint I often get is that the "default" html file (usually default.htm) is left open and that they cannot replace the file with a new file. All other HTML/CDML files can be replaced. My boss wants to use Filemaker Pro to link faxed-in paper forms which are scanned in and converted to PDFs with additional information. The PDF needs to be linked via a reference # to additional information fields and e-mailed to an order processor. As the mailing list database I use continues to grow, I would like to weed out names that are no longer relevant. To decide which records to delete, I would like to find records for all the people who have an empty Event field. However, because the Event field in each individual record is actually a "global field," I cannot do a find on that field. Do you have any suggestions for another way to find records with empty global fields? Will I need to change the database, so that we can repeat this process in the future?

I' m importing a tab seperated text file, it contains dates which look like this; 10/10/00 when I import the file the field that holds this value (which is a date field) shows the date with the year as a 4 figure number, but instead of showing the year as 2000 it shows it as 1900. Seems strange? Is this a FileMaker error and is there a solution to it ??

I need more help on writing a script that will search across multiple fields with out doing multiple Finds. What I have in mind is the user clicks a Find button that takes the user to a new layout, at that point they enter the job# that they want to find. Then they hit a Find button the invokes a script. I have gone through all the forums and did a search so I think I'm on track. But I no nothing about scripting. So every thing that I've read is over my head so far. I expect to inherit a FM Pro 5 database with approx. 4000 names, addresses, etc. I would like to maintain the database on the web with an interface for updates and searches. I was told by my web host that they "do not currently support ASP or JSP," and I wonder therefore if it possible to use FM5 with this host. I have a project tracking database for recording leads and potential sales. I need to create file folders for each project to cache any paperwork. I may only create four or five folder labels at a time. It would be a natural to have a layout for printing these label from FMP but I don't want to waste an entire sheet of labels. Is there an answer that lest you print from a specified label position on a sheet of labels? I now have to export the data to DeskTopLabels Pro in order to accomplish this task. Thanks.

There are two ways. One is to change the fields on the layout to not allow entry. Change to layout mode; go to the layout you want to modify; select all the fields on the layout; from the "Forma"t menu choose "Field Format" and uncheck the "allow entry into field" option. Clik OK. The other method is to set up passwords onto the database that do not allow the user to create, edit or delete records.

Our office used to use FM to dial our phones for us. Now we have a "PBX" phone system and we can't get the dialing to work. "Hook-Flashes" are needed and they don't work with FM (at least as far as we can see). Does anyone have any advice.

I was once told that there was an easy way to reset the relationships and script calls in Filemaker by using BBEdit. If there is anyone that knows how this works, please share the solution. Thanks.

I have two databases. One lists patients, and the other lists all their medications, and they usually take many different drugs. ( one to many relationship )Each drug belongs to a specific class, like "contracepttive pill" etc. So there is a Class text field in the drugs database. I want Filemaker to do the following: While I am in the "Patient" database, to search through the drug database and tell me if this specific patient is on a drug which belongs to a specific class. Many of my clients have been having a major problem with FileMaker Pro 5.0v1 & v3 on the Windows platform and I hope somebody can help. I have a printout that has a sliding text field in the body of the printout, and it is set to remove the blank spaces if the whole box is not filled with text. There can be anywhere from 40-200 records in the body of the printout, so this sliding text field essentially has to be processed 40-200 times. My clients can preview the information just fine, but when they go to print, sometimes an error occurs:

I'm brand new to FileMaker and I can't find a solution to this problem. I've looked through the manual and through the help files. I want to be able to subtract the time some one started a task from the time that they finished the task to show the duration of the task. I am currently just subtracting the two and its not working correctly. Is there a formula I can use and if so what is it and where do I type it in. Thanks, Jim

has anyone else had issues arise with databases after upgrading from FM4 to FM5? specifically, that a database won't work on the web all of a sudden, although it will still work in filemaker. i'm new to this - do i have to run Web Companion again to output new HTML (CDML?) for my web page? everything has stayed the same, except for the upgrade to FM5. thanks for any insight anyone can give.

Has anyone had any problems running FMPro 5 on a brand new iMac running OS 9.0.4? The machine is hosting approx. 15 databases (it is not the server version of fmpro). There are 5 users who log into this machine to access the db's. Occassionally the users get booted out of the databases with a -1072 error. They are able to log in immediately. This usually occurs after they haven't used their machine for a little while. (approx. 15-30 minutes of inactivity) The user machines are running MacOS from 8.1 - 8.6. This can also happen if a user is accessing the database from offsite via TCP/IP. The db's were hosted on a different machine with os 8.x previously and this di…

Sharing datatbase, peer-to-peer, 4 users. FM often quits when either of 2 different client machines (one running 8.6, th other 9.04)is on AOL 5.1938 (POTS 24KB). Client must be restarted to re-open FM because of "maximum number of users" message. Source machine is rarely affected.

I want to have a field in each record of a data base called num that is a count of how many of 20 text fields (F1 through F20)in that record contain data. I could set up 20 more fields (N1 through N20), each of which is a calculation corresponding to one of the F1 through F20 fields which is 1 if the field is not empty and 0 if it is: for instance:N1=If (F1<>"",1,0) And then num could be a sum of N1 through N20. Here's a problem: I have 2 databases, one main, and other supporting database. Main database holds information on different "things", supporting database is supposed to hold history about each "thing" in main database. In a simplified way - supporting database contains fields: id, date, place (the meaning is where each "thing" with 'id' was at a 'date') What I need to do is, while browsing the main database, create a new record in supporting database with specified info (date, place), for selected "thing" with 'id'. I am having a problem with my printing. Right now I am trying to make a database that creates form letters. I have one database that contains all all of the various static comments. The user selects the comments they want. Then a script copies all the comments into one field in a seperate "Documents" database. The user is given the oppourtunity to make changes to the form letter and then print. The problem I am having is that the form letter is usually quite large, 3-5 pages, and I only get one page of text. Hello, I need to make a good database for sales, and for fulfillment. I have a prototype, part of which consists of the following tables: Quotes Quote Line Items Orders Order Line Items Invoices Invoice Line Items My plan is this: 1) Sales employees make the quotes, then turn quotes into orders 2) Accounting employees pick up the orders, verify payment, the turn orders into invoices 3) Fulfillment employees pick up the invoices, and ship them. Hi FileMaker pro5 Gurus, I have two tables with one to many relationship. It works fine when i am not in the web mode but run on the local machine. But when i use the browser and display the tables it displays fine. The problem is when i want to edit the tables. The Master table can be edited. But the related table if there is no record currently we cannot add a new record. I designed a database solution for a company, which they use to generate a lot of reports. However, they say that the database is only printing 300 records and then stopping. The reports have a lot more than 300 records. It has 1520 records. They are printing from an IBM desktop system. Pentium III 550 Mhz, 63 Mb SDRAM, 10 GB hard disk drive, running Win 98. The printer is a Lexmark wide carriage, dot matrix, industrial strength printer. I went to diagnose it and printed and it printed 400 records fine (which was how much I sent as a test). Hi, I wonder if anyone can advise me. I have a series of FileMaker Pro 2 for Mac databases containing geological data that were setup and populated back in the early 1990s (200+ fields per database including check boxes and free text fields exceeding 255 characters). I now have a requirement to export this data to Oracle. The export facilities in FileMaker Pro 2 are fairly limited so I was wondering, would it be easier to buy a Filemaker 5 licence ? I just switched from the Mac version to the NT 4 version which runs as a service. The PDF manual that came on the CD is corrupted and I know nothing about services. So how do I tell FMServer to open files and share them with the rest of the network? And I can't find the manual anywhere on the web, does anyone out there have a copy they could email me? Using FMPro 5.0v1, Windows 2000. I'm trying for the first time to use FMPro and ODBC, and the manual indicates that that to do so I must Enable the Data Access Companions: 'Local Access...' & 'Remote data...' However, when I go to the Plugins menu, the only Plug-in that exists is the 'Web Companion' I've reinstalled everything again, but no joy, and they don't seem to exist of the CD!! How do I get these files onto my computer??

I have a massive calculation, It basically matches one field with the other when a code is entered. It now tells me that I have too many seperations when I add more to the CASE. Does anyone know if I have reached my limit? And if I have is their any other way to enter more info? Please help? Also I have indexed feilds that will have numbers in them and i need the to total up in another field. I can only get the first number of the Indexed field to total up. how can make it so all the numbers total up?

I've attempted to have a page number print in preview mode by following the instructions to click on the layout where I want it and then to go to Edit, Paste Special, Page Number and the double ## appears but doesn't print. What am I missing. Thank you.

We use a portal that links our invoice to a line items file. I am trying to design a new layout for the invoice right now and am having a problem printing. The fields in the portal somehow block out the lines seperating the rows in the portal. This is a customer receipt that ships with thier invoice so I would like it to look as professional as possible. I have tried every setting I could think of but I must be missing something. Any ideas? The wierd thing is the portal is 18 lines deep, and the formatting only gets screwed up about 7-8 deep.
