Hello everyone, I've spent months on trying to figure this one out on my own. I have a table with over 2,600 records. It can take up to 10-15 minutes to import one record, because thats all i need. Basicly its a purchase order database. The buyer types in the part #, then presses the import button, and fm starts to import the fcst and description ,etc for the item. Well, I just need it to import that matching values for this item, not import all of the 2,600 records, then drop the values it needs. Is there anyway to import just the item number that matches whats been put in the part # box?

Hi all. I have created a layout containing 4 related tables in order to perform finds of specific data. I am able to find the data, but am unable to export it. I think this is because I can only export the tables themselves and not the layouts. Is there a way to perform cross-table queries and export the results to another application? I have also tried exporting just the fields with no success. Thanks

I'm new to FileMaker, so please don't laugh if this is a simple problem. My background is with Access, and so far I've been pleasantly surprised with FileMaker's logic and ease of use. My problem is with exporting records to a .dbf file (or to any other format). When I open the newly created file, some of the fields are just blank. The headers are still there at the top of the colum, but the entries are completely empty. The main file has a location code which corresponds to a longitude and latitude from a related file. When I export, I grab the location code and the related longitude and latitude. After export, I open the newly created file to find three colum …

I work at a university research center. THe Center has a mixed computer environment: Macs and PCs running the latest respective version of MS Office and FM Pro 7.0. We frequently use MS Word to create text in foreign languages, because it is far easier to insert accents using Word's easy key combination. We need to be able to import the tex--ALONG WITH ALL OF THE OTHER FORMATTING, including boldface type, italics, and underlined words--into FM Pro 7. We can do this easily on the Mac platform by means of the cut and paste routine. However, in the Windows platform, all I get is unformatted text, even using the past special routine in FM Pro 7.0 for Windows. Does anyo…

I need to create insert text scripts at my office that would allow me to insert FORMATTED text. For example, "[sic]"--in which the word sic would be italicized. Are there keyboard commands that I can put in to manually force the macro to italicize just the word? Thanks.

I have fm developer 7.0v3 on Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). I have seen another developer, on Windows machine, import DB2 data directly into their Filemaker database. Can I access DB2 databases on my mainframe from my Mac? Do I do this via ODBC? Do I need to install some drivers?

You know how in a pop up list it just shows all the unique records for that field - well, how the heck can you export that data ? I've got a database with 1600 records and just 19 unique phrases and I just want to end up with the 19 unique phrases. Cut and paste wont work, exporting the database and re-importing doesn't, I've looked at the script options but can see it there either. Thanks

Is there anyway to supress this message when importing: "user.txt" contained only enough data to update the first 1 records. I am using dos commands to create a text file that contains the person's user name and then importing it into a global field. but i get that message everytime, everything works, it is just annoying.

Hi, Folks... Fairly new user to FM. Everything I know about databases is self taught. First with Access, then a MUCH easier time with FM. Like to see if anyone can help. We build kits--long and short of it is we have parent, child, and grandchild tables (Parent is the Kit, Child is the Activity in the kit (multiple), and the grandchild is the items needed for the activity (inventory). Once we assign activities to a kit, we want to export the kit (a piece of all 3 tables) to another FM file. Reason being: activities will often have the same items (say, beakers). We want to consolidate the items into different quantities without affecting the activity …

Hi! At the application startup, I have FileMaker calling a WinBatch script to check if a certain registry key has been created or not (piracy protection). The WinBatch script writes the result (key exists or not) in an INI files, then I need to be able to read it with FileMaker. Anyone would know anything? Thank you! Jean Christophe Avard

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I hope someone can help me with a problem I've been having. I have created a database using Filemaker 7 that holds customer quotes, complete with 2 images and around 7 text fields. I have 2 different layouts to display the quotes, 1 is an excel style Table (Which I am displaying as a list to show my formatted layout) and the other is a powerpoint-style Form. For various reasons the account managers at the company want the quotes they create to be exported from Filemaker into Excel and Powerpoint (or Word) respectively. Is there any way of doing this? I think the main problem will probably be exporting the container field cont…

Hey All, First off, I'm new here... I've looked through this forum, but I can't seem to find the answer to my question. I've been using Filemaker within in my dad's business for a few little things, but I can't seem to find out how to do the following: Another program we use needs a CSV file with parameters that are in our order records in Filemaker. At the moment, we just manually create the files in Excel, but I would like to have filemaker create the file automatically each time we create a new record (order) with the data from that actual record. So for example, if the record contains the fields in a portal: - data1 - data2 - data3 etc, etc …

I'm importing a MER containing 200,000 records into my LineItems. Purpose is to capture order history from web sales (up through current sales). I've imported into LineItems before and it's been very slow - even when unclicking Perform Auto Enter. So this time, I decided that the 'slowness' may be because of all the TOs attached to my LineItems TO. So I created a new table occurence of LineItems, created an associated layout, unclicked Perform Auto Enter and began my import - theory being the import wouldn't have to update all the associated table dependencies (?). I then left on trip. I'm back and ... oh good grief, the import is only half done!!! It still has…

FM7, In a scripted import, it possible to have the file type set to "Text" (instead of defaulting to "Any File") but still allow the user to pick a file? In experimenting with various settings I thought that I had figured out a way to do this, but now it doesn't seem to work. The problem is that I have one file, which if import as "Any" will be determined to be CSV by filemaker instead of Tab-delimited text, which messes up the import.

I need to export several records on a daily basis, There are 10 fields in a record one being in a portal with several lines. The field name of this is: "Job request" The results are in a pop up menu and can be:- Artwork Amended Artwork Stereos Preset The problem I have is the .tab file I am exporting is showing each record in it's own line which is correct but the last field "Job request" is only showing the last line entry: "Preset". I need it show all the generated lines in order : "Artwork, Amended Artwork, Stereos, Preset" all on the same line as the other fields in the record. Any ideas?

I am brand new to FileMaker. About 2 years ago we purchased FMP6, and FINALLY I am attempting to redo our current db. We use the archaic system, NUTSHELL. Is there anyway to import either the records or the layouts? I don't even know where to begin. I need to make a simple "standard layout", that includes about 14 fields. I also need to make an "invoice", where I could choose which fields to include on invoice. Is there a section on the forums for samples? I will take any advice available at this point! Thank you!, Jody

I've created a simple new database for a project at work. Its is about 940 kb. At home I have a copy of the file to tweak and improve it, by adding new fields (not changing the old ones). I create a clone of the file at home (no records) then import the work file. All works fine. Same record numbers and pages in Preview Mode etc but the file is smaller - 788kb. Why. I'm worried something was overlooked. It is tedious trying to physically compare the 600 records for differences.

I have FMP server and 10 Windows XP FMP clients. I export some data to make up variables that become part of a batch file. Here are the lines of the script. Script Export Records [No dialog; "dbcinfo.bat"; ASCII (DOS)] Send Event ["aevt"; "odoc"; "dbcinfo.bat"] Path for file to be executed by Send Event: filewin:/C:/DBBin/dbcinfo.bat The Export line works from all the clients. The Send Event line however doees not always work. I have found that if I edit the script from the workstation reset the path it works. Then the next day it will fail until I reset the path. It is as if the workstation does not know the path of the file that it exported in…

On the old DB my company was using, there are a ton of checkboxes. Currently they have them each as a unique checkbox, I need them to all be merged into one SET of checkboxes. (I'll give an example) For example, previous there were age ranges (18-25, 26-30, 31-35 etc.) Each age range was a seperate field and held a value of "checked" or "unchecked" (ie: 18-25 was seperate from 26-30 rather than being selected from a value list that included 18-25 AND 26-30) I need to take that information of "checked" or"unchecked" and have it actually take and check or uncheck the boxes in my check box list. I'm reading what I can from this forum, but I'm not finding …

Is there a way to disable this FMP dialog box during a scripted export? I am using FMP v. 4, with about 9 db. In an automated script that runs daily, if there are no records found, the "No Records Match this Request" dialog box appears. Under normal circumstances is not an issue, but someone has to manually be in front of this computer to select options. I would like this export to happen without the need of any human intervention. Would anyone know how to script this, (simplest way to complete this, with minimal effort)?

Hi! We are preparing to export some of the inormation from a FileMaker 5 (.fp5) to another type of database. The problem is that we encountered some documents/files in our FileMaker-database. Usually we use the "Export"-function to be able to move the information but that can't be done with the files, or? As far as I can see I think this is OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) and my question is if there is an easy way to make this kind of export or do you have to do this manually? Best regards! /Snooze

I have a database containing all the shots from a film I am working on. I have successfully updated my datatbase by importing a continuity list containinng information reagarding what section of each shot is used in the cut and where it is located in the cut. I run into problems however, if a shot is used multiple times. In such cases I would like each occurence of the shot to be a unique record with a unique shot name. For example: "Shot A" exists in my current database. I then import a continuity list containing how much of each shot is used and when it is used in the film. "Shot A" is used only one time. "Shot A" is then updated to contain continuity in…

Hi There, I have a mail merge working where i export my fields to a tab file then use the send message script to open a word doc with the fields merged in, well it works fine the first time but any subsequent export wont overwrite the existing tab field that the previous export created. if i go and manually delete it it works fine as it creates a new file. Am i missing something obvious? Also when one user (we have 40) opens the file (the word file that i store on the server that holds the merge fields) it cant be opened if any other user tries as its 'locked' by the first user. Is there a way to do all this with many users, like open a file as a copy or something? …

I have a simple database that has one related database. Using FMPro 6 I am able to export all records and all related records to a tab-delimited file. The script in the parent db to do the export simply finds all records, sorts them, then does the export script step. The field order of the export basically looks like this: field1 field2 . . . subdb::field1 subdb::field2 This script in FMPro6 exports all the fields specified from parent record 1, then loop and export all the fields specified in all of the related records in subdb database one right after the other, then go to parent record 2 and export it's fields and all it's related records field…

Hi everyone. Been using FM for quite a few years now, but now getting into the 21st century with eCommerce. Have designed a db in fm 5 which contains basic info (product name, id, description etc) and I have a related file called designers (containing bio of designer etc.) I'm trying to learn how to export the data properly into sql. Has anyone got any tips to share (using OSCommerce). I've since learned that I cannot export container fields containing images of each product. Am I right in assuming that I should have a url field containing the actual link to the image ? ANy help would be gratefully received. Yours, Karl

Location 1: FMS serves files (eg. customers.fp5, quotes.fp5, etc) to the local FM network. Location 2: FMP 6 shares files (eg. w_customers.fp5, w_quotes.fp5, etc) with the local FM network. Both sets of files are virtually identical. Every day Location 1 files are updated via import scripts with Location 2 data. A key relationship used in the updating process is quotes::id = w_quotes::id The other day the DSL connection failed just before the import script was run. The connection is up again, but the script does not work properly because the key relationship now reads quotes::id = quotes::id It seems to me that because FM could not find w_quot…

Hello everyone, I'm really new to filemaker pro, my comp, has version 5 at the moment. We have a table that has product ID, and On Hand inventory, and fcst by month etc. What I've come up with is a database that we can place purchase orders on, thus we import the fcst, on hand inventory, cume, vendor information when we enter the product ID. The xls table seems to slow down the import by up to 4 mins. And we do numerous purchase orders on a daily basis, what I beleive should take 10 minutes, can take 2 hrs. Is there a way, that when we import all records, that it can save the records so that when we want to work on another item, all we have to do is just find that re…

Hi everyone, not sure where to put this topic, sorry ... I currently Save A Copy As on our peer-to-peer every 10 minutes. When Server Advanced is in place, I may back up as frequently as every 5 minutes (depending upon how much time it takes). However Owner is concerned about losing orders between backups (we can receive up to 15 orders generating 150 LineItems in a 5-minute period). Owner feels staff wouldn't remember all people to call back and he also doesn't want to have to call them to ask what they ordered. We have UPS in place and I also think it's unlikely the hard drive would fail while running (?) but, rare or not, the possibility exists. He has b…

Hi, I have a problem exporting records. I have a simple(ish) invoicing database that has a customer and line items database. After I do a search in a line items field in a certain date range, I export the customer postal code and the line item name and ID. It's super slow, it could 1 record per hour if I let it go. If i choose and randam records and export them it's completed instantly, but with records found in a range its goes super slow. Anyone know whats going on?

Hi, I have a database containing my customers. The information is customer name, adress, phone, customer number etc. There also is a picture (since we produce picuters) of every customer in a field. This field (container) is just a link to a folder where I put all my pictures and then it automatic appears in the record. Now to my problem. Lets say I have searched and found 100 records. I then would like to copy (export) all pictures found to a different but specified folder. I have tried a little with troi file but it only seems to work with on specied filename and not folders or?! Any other way or plugin?? Thanks in advance! //Fredrik

I am trying to export an XML document to import into Endicia. So far everything works except the Package ID value. It is supposed to output <Package ID = 1><Package ID = 2> and so on for each record. However, when I try to use fmp:ROW it doesn't work. If I use any other field name it works fine. What am I doing wrong? Here is the stylesheet: <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:fmp="http://www.filemaker.com/fmpdsoresult" exclude-result-prefixes="fmp"> <xsl:output method="xml" version="1.0" standalone="yes" indent="yes" encoding="iso-8859-1"/> <xsl:template match="fmp:FMPDSORESULT"…

Hi!. I've been working on a project to import data from a contact management system into a Filemaker 7 database but hit a brick wall at the moment. The 3rd party application (SQL server based) contains contact information that needs to be imported as a point in time snapshot to mapped fields within the FM database. At the moment I've been working on a theory of exporting the contact data to the local clipboard and then importing via script to a new record in FM but haven't been able to work out how to do it. Ideally I don't want to have to export to a file and then re-import, but run it on the fly. Has anyone out there any ideas or pointers?

I want to export a found record and its related records into one xml file export. This is so information can be shared with other users and they only have to import one file, rather than many files. So, the script finds the one record with the desired information, then it exports it (via xml - fmpxmlresult) with its related records. That is, when I specified the export, I added the related fields to the exported fields list. The problem is, it is only exporting the first record of the related data, rather than all 3-10 records. Is there a way to make this work? Thanks.

I have 3 csv files that I want to load into an FMP7 database. Each csv file has row 1 equal to field names. I need to be able to load these and create the respective tables within the database. I haven't seen a method by which to do this without first creating the tables/fields. Any ideas? Thanks.

Here's my pickle of a situation: I need to generate a set of data (e.g. a set of prescriptions for students to practice counseling) and I want to export the set to another file, then go back and generate another set for the next student. (I want to be able to use all data for random selection, and don't have enough data to just eliminate that which has already been chosen.) I would like to append the next export to the file the first export went into, rather than creating 200 files (I have 200 students in class!). How do I do that? I have no problem selecting the data, etc. I just am not sure how to export data and append it to the same file, if that is pos…

I'm trying to import a 500MB Genbank data file into FM7, using BBedit to strip <CR>s etc, but I'm running into the following structural problems: 1. Not all records have entries for all fields 2. Many records have multiple lines for multiple entries for the same field. Hey! Have read earlier threads concerning naming an export file using a calc field and found them really interesting. Many have written about the solution Wim Decorte came up with and it seems really nice. But I'm really a novice concerning this cmd command etc so I came up with a new question. Say I use this in a runtime solution. Then the end user will install the runtime anywhere he (or she) wants on the computer. Say I have a export folder in my solution. Now I can't specify the whole command since the runtime could be on C:/ or d:/ or whatever. How can I solve this? Thankful for all your help /David Holmberg ps. the original command looks some…

Is there a way to import data from one table into another table in the SAME file that doesn't require a file path!?!? It seems really dumb that the import sript needs a file path to itself (the same file) in order the move data from one table to another. If the file is renamed, it screws up the import form one table to another. Any ideas? Once again this would of course be solved is Filemaker allowed file paths to be determined by a calculation!!!

This is a request from a complete newbie. I am testing out FM7 with the trial version at the moment but what I want to do is open a microsoft access database? in FM7. Is this possible? I keep getting a message stating that FM7 doesn't recognise the file type. I need to do this because my school use the database for recording pupils performance and writing end of year reports. As I use a mac I can't use access and it's causing me a lot of work. Any body got any ideas?

I am trying to import data from five .txt files in a folder. If I import them individually the data imports exactly as I would expect. I wanted to import all 5 files at the same time. I specify the folder that these files are in and check the button for text files. My source fields come up "Text Content", "FileName", and "FilePath" instead of the fields that are in the files. What am I doing wrong???

I need to export a group of email addresses from Filemaker 5.5 database and eventually get them into Address Book (OS X) as a "group." Any suggestions? Filemaker doesn't support LDIF or vCard when exporting. Before upgrading to OS X/Mail/Address Book, we would export as comma delimited and then import into Entourage quite easily.

This is silly - when I want to export data from a FM file, the program has absolutely no trouble letting me export fields from any tables that are related to the parent table. Export ------ Parent::ID No. Parent::Name Child::Favorite Color (as related by matching ID No., let's say) However, when I have a separate FM File that I want to directly import the data INTO, I cannot map related fields for import; if I wanted the 'Favorite Color' field, I'd have to define a local copy of it (Parent::zc.Fcolor = Child::Favorite Color), in order to define the field import order from Parent. Import ------ Parent::ID No. Parent::Name Parent::zc.fcolor …

I have an excel csv file (with repeating fields) that I'd like to convert to Filemaker. Each row includes data for a specific customer order. While the majority of fields in a row are unique, the product fields have 20 occurrences. A new row is created by my website whenever an order is placed. I'd like to import this data into Filemaker in 3rd normal form (so that there a single record for each item ordered vs. using repeating data), so that I analyze the data (such as how many XL Blue Shirts were ordered on a given month). What is the best way to convert the data from records using repeating fields to a file in 3rd normal format? Will I need to write a customer…

Hi folks, (please let me know if I'm posting this in the wrong place) I have a database in FileMaker 4, and I would like to export it to excel in a way that doesn't require the user to change the placement of the data (i.e. which cells the data gets put into). Here are a few more specifics: We use this database to track data such as pH, water temperature, etc. on several sites which are monitored on a monthly basis. Each record in the database is one site on one day--there are multiple records for each site, and multiple records for each day, but only one record for each "site-day" ... does this make any sense? I want to export the data to excel for graphin…

Working on changing a database from a single table to a multi-table solution (ie. from an Order database to an Order database and a Line Item database). I was hoping to make a calculation field to create a Tab Delimited file but can not figure a way to insert a tab between each field. Is there any way to add and export special characters from an FM7 field? Or does anyone know of a simple Find & Replace utility to find/replace multiple Strings with a special character (ie. replace *TAB* with the tab character, or *ENTER* with a carriage return and line feed)? Worst case I can write a program in Java or VisualBasic.NET but would rather not reinvent the wheel i…

I am switching over to FM from Access. I plan to rebuild a database that I made in access so it will have a user interface that I was never able to build in access. The main issue is that 2 of the tables are linked to 2 text files. They are for county permit files which I download from the county website and the table is automatically updated once I overwrite the text file with the current version. As long as I don't change the name it works fine. How can I do this with Filemaker

Is there a way of exporting my fmp7 file that has embedded pictures to access or excel? Every pathic attempt I have made will not export the images "container fields can not be exported" and my client only has Windows system no FMP so it has to be access or excel. There are over 2400 images in the file so I desprately need to find a way of doing this without re-entering the whole project. I am mac based so access is not an option and excel keeps crashing with the massive file size.

Hi there. After contacting FMP Tech Suport, I found out that Donations 1.0 on FMP 6 does not allow a direct file import from Excel. Reason was simple - Donation 1.0 has inividual table file for ADDRESS, CONTACT, ORGANIZATION, Etc. and doesn't allow a combine import - I will have to import each field type individually. Address into ADDRESS, names into CONTACT, Etc... After searching this forum - I was wondering if anyone has some type of script that will make this import job much easier?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

For the past 3 months I've been creating/building a fairly complex solution, importing and creating single records as I go along using FP7 DEV. I'm suddenly no longer able to import with this particular solution. I have not had need to import for over a month, so I do not know when this function ceased. All other solutions I have continue to import flawlessly. Someone suggested I upgrade to v3 and I did so right away. After upgrading I still can create one new record at a time but just like before, every attempt I make to import any set of records with this ONE solution results in the following window:(the record number changes depending on the number of records in t…

Hi everyone, I have been trying to create a sync button that will be on the client file(using filemaker 7), and it will sync with a server file (filemaker 7 server). All 5 of the clients need to be able to sync to the same file. The problem i notice is when going through the export and import script that i created, I notice synching is just done on a record by record basis. Can filemaker compare on a field by field basis where if one field was changed by one client and another field was changed (in the same record) by another client, the sync would honor both? If so how??? Thanks a bunch
