  1. Hello, Setup: I have a many to one relationship (through means of a Portal)... I have a scripted that adds a new entry to my portal for only that record. All I want to do is to add a field next to the new entry (blank field)... so the inputer sees what they entered the last time for this record. Really just a reference... Help? Joseph

  2. Uses Batch file so possibly windows only, attached file is fmp7. NO PLUGIN REQUIRED! 1. Filename obtained from embedded file via calc on the container. 2. Push Open button runs a script that- Exports file using a generic name, a batch scipt file is created and then run that changes file to original filename. File is then opened via an open url script. 1 Button, no user input. WARNING- one downside is that it will not open files that have a space in their filename.     Hi, I'm having a problem with global fields, one is a question, one is something I have never experienced before, and is counter to the way I understand global fields. 1: Is their a way to prohibit the changing of a value in a global field without "hiding it" on a layout that is not used? The prohibit modification box is grayed out in the field creation menu. 2: On a soultion I am currently using the value in a global field keeps disapearing.     Hi I'm not sure if this can be done this way.. I'm wanting to use a calculated field in one database to display the contents of multiple related record fields from a second database. Is this possible? I can structure the data from the 1st related record, but don't know how to display the subsequent records.     I have fields that are calculated with a custom function that is just text parsing to extract data from an e-mail body (stored claculation, once extracted the data will not change, so i think no need to use the "do not store option..."). So far so good... In the same script that gets my email body info to be used to extract content to my calculated fields, I want to use the info in the calculated fields in a IF step...   9. I have a field with a start date, and a field with a due date. I want a field that shows a % for how far along todays date is between the start and due date fields. I thought I had a calculation that would do this, but it will not update. The only time it updates is if I change the date in either the start or due fields.   10. I have a situation where a served FileMaker database displays linked images which are located in a complex hierachy of folders on a separate file server machine. The file server went down and all the data was restored from backup with the exact same names and structure. Now many of the linked images are not displaying (the usual "Could not draw picture file: "image name"). There are more than 5000 records in the file, so reinserting images one-by-one is not an option. Hello, I know this must have been posted a thousand times. just point me to the right answer please, Imagine the case, you have a contact database with 2 tables, contacts and locations. im entering data, i get to country , i choose my country with a pop-up list and then I want the Province to be only the provinces of the previous selected country. I've already set up the locations table with its fields. But I dont know the calculation needed to filter down the results.     Does FileMaker have a limit on how many pages it will print for 1 record. For example the record I need to print covers 9 pages. They are fixed, not sliding and the fields do not cross over the page separators. But it will not print pages 7 - 9. No matter what setting I put it on.

    Greetings, fellow FileMakers! Does anyone know how to make a text box that won't expand when full? I have found the maximum number of characters limit that one can apply under the Validation tab in the field options when defining the database, but don't really want to go that route. Because of the variance in character height and width, it's hard to come up with a good number that will allow the user to fill the given space without going over the limit. Alternatively, if it were possible for the height of the text field on the layout to increase dynamically based on the number of lines of text entered beyond the "default" height, I suppose that would also work…

  16. I have a global container that holds two parallel lines. Behind the container is a solid color background field. The parallel lines were created in Pagemaker 5.0 on a Mac and pasted into the container. I have added a windows machine running XP and cannot correctly print from the PC. On screen the container is transparent and the lines appear as stripes against the color background. When printed from the PC to multiple printers the container loses its transparency and does not print the background color where the container is located. The printed output from the Mac is correct.

    Hello! I have a simple billing database linked to a Client DB. I'm trying to get a monthly summary of charges out of the billing DB that I can store somewhere, i.e., a calculation field called 'January Charges'. Here's what I use: If (Date >= 1/1/05 and Date <= 1/31/05, Sum (Charge), 0) Instead of getting a sum of charges for January, I get all charges for that client totalled up...January and afterwards. I've looked at Premiere and Keynote, but FM might make more sense for me because my images can be easily searched and sorted. Does anyone else use FM this way?     Hi All, I need a little help figuring out a way to take return-separated list of vocabulary words or phrases, and split it into 2 balanced columns for my printout (to save space). Here's an example list: goggles aquarium turtles coral migratory shark seal pond ocean salt water starfish fish diver beach crab seahorses blowfish mammal They do not need to retain their listed order. I'm thinking one calc might do it, if there's an easy way to get every other line tabbed over on the previous line. In FM7, I would probably use a custom function to do this, but since this is in FM6, I'm not sure how to parse it.

  24. Quick question: I have a login system that sets a global field to the users name. Then as they navigate to the various related databases, they can look back to the login file and grab the name of the user from the global. Odd thing, the global does not seem to be sticking. I would expect that a user will log on to the server, and as long as they have the FM files open, the global will reatain the name that was inserted. Odd thing is, that some users will log in, their name appears in the global. They go about working, but in a few hours all of a sudden the global for that user changes and shows someone elses name.   31. Call me crazy, but is there no way to capture "the number of occurances" of many different finds all together in one layout? For example, a grid that shows the number of sales by country (rows), and by quarter (columns), the data being pulled and assembled from other db's. I've worked in FMP for years, but I fear I'm missing an entire concept (and am perhaps guilty of thinking in Excel), but it's really quite simple, and all the data is right there. I have a field "fader.1.level" which is a pop up list, and a global container "fader.1.position" I also have a table with the two fields "fader.position" and "fader.position.graphic", from which to pull the graphics. In other words: I have an invoice # that is RM-01-AB - It is a calculation that pulls the initials of the first name (RM) + Serial # + AB (referring to the type of product) However, I want the serial #s to go up per that person - so that the next one would be RM-02-AB. The serial #s need to be sequential for each client - I also want to have, for example, TB-02-AB.   41. I'm trying to use global container fields for some GUI elements in a layout and am having a problem with them disappearing or going 'all white' when other buttons are pressed in Browse mode. Specifically, I've got a list layout with a couple of buttons in each row along with data. In the header I've put a graphic task bar (container field),and some info on top of it, including other buttons (also container fields) and merge fields.     Ahhh...the learning curve...so much fun. Simple question today (I think!) How does one go about making a given field required? I know that I can set Validation to requre Not Empty, but I'm already using Validation to check maximum character count, so I need the custom alert menu for that.     I wonder If anyone can help. I just received my copy of Filemaker 7 and have started off quite well. I already have my page set up with my database attached. What I want to do now is to import a folders worth of images associated with that database.   49. I have a repeating global text field that I am trying to copy the data from the repetition into a repeating text field. I can get it to set the first repetition of the text field using SetField( "repeatingText,-1, GetRepetition(myGlobal, 1) ), but it will not get data for myGlobal repetition 2.   53. Hi all, I am trying to use Get(RecordNumber) in a field. It is placed in the body. On any other layout this works fine, but when used on a layout with a portal in it, it produces random numbers or at least it seems like it. The field is not in the portal but outside of it. Storage is turned off so it is calculating when necessary. Any ideas? Test it yourself, it doesn't work. Driving me bananas. I can't think of any other way to show the current record number in a field. I thought about pasting the contents of @@ (which does show the correct record number) into a field but there is no way to do that in a script. Thanks in advance

I'd like to transform all the database in "linked" images, in order to avoid the file to become too big.   55. hi all I have a FM7 application with 5000 products. Every product has a picture. But the database is 2,6 GB. Ofcourse because the images we use are sometimes +600kb or more. There are bmp's, jpg's, pict's and other formats. So it's very hard to do this automatically. Here are my 3 fields: AtPrePressDate (date field) Completed (text field, which is a checkbox giving "x" when checked) Status (a calculated date field) if(Completed="x", "Completed", AtPrepressDate) AtPrepressDate obviously displays a date ok, otherwise I get the "?" in the field. I played around using the Case function instead, but couldn't really get it to work sufficiently either. Any ideas? I'm probably forgetting something simple, I always do that.

  61. A global container field in FM 6 file holds small jpg, when the file is closed and re-opened the global container is empty. There are 2000 records in the file but no images, file size fairly small. Another sample FM file I created with 4 records doesn't have this behavior, it retains same small image in global container. For calculations, I've been using mainly the "If" function, and some of these calculations are quite massive. I suspect that this causes my database to take up to a minute to update all records when I start up, and this situation will only get worse with time.     We want to keep track of a persons job classification. We import the data into FM via an Excel file. So basically if the job changed from "programmer" to "janitor" we would like to see a list of that. I tried doing 5 repetitions for the Classification and Classification Timestamp fields but it just keeps overwriting the first repetition and won't add new ones (leaving existing ones alone).     We have a database that tracks tests. One field shows the date the test was ISSUED. Another field shows the date is DUE. We need a due date to calculate the Date ISSUED plus 11 days. So for example a test was issued on 01/01/2005 we want the DUE field to automatically pop in 01/12/2005. How the heck do we do this? We were able to do it with FM Pro 5 by doing DateIssued + 11 but that calculation does not work in 7 HELP!! Thanks!

    Is it possible to edit the value of a summary field type? e.g. I have a summary field type of Total Price of $4000 but due to some circumstances, I need to modify that $4000 to $3500. The ideal solution would be if I am able to leave the original total price of $4000 then copy that value to a text field type and edit the $4000 to $3500 in that new field.     I'm a FM7 newbie, so be kind as I come up to speed on what looks to be a great product. I want to present a user with a list of 30 possible fields (i.e. First Name, Last Name, Address) and allow them to "select" fields via a Yes/No radio button which is associated with each field. So in this example, lets say the user selects 12 of the 30 fields. Then the user hits a button (let's call it "Build") and new layout is created using only the 12 fields selected.     I have a layout that I'm using container fields in a portal to store pictures (actually a reference to a picture) but sometimes I have 3 or 4 and maby as many as 10 pages, my problem is that when I only have a few pages like 2 or 3, when I print it wants to print all 10 pages ( as that is how big the table is) I would like to have a script or some way of printing only pages with filled container fields. And not the empty pages. Right now I have to physically look and count how many pages to print. Which is ok until I forget to look and just hit print and I get all 10 pages.     Hello, Is there a way to have a date as a number field? I use several concatenated fields as a match field for a number of lookups and matching-record imports. All of the fields are number fields except for a date field, which has meant I use the numtotext and datetotext functions and the match field is defined as a text field. The lookups and imports involve large number of records, and I've noticed FM is much slower processing text fields in this situation compared with number fields. If there is some way of using a number for the date, so the match field can be a number field, and both FM and I will be happier!

After reading some of the postings, I still can't figure out if it can be done. There is one that says you cannot put multiple pics in one container, but then there are others that seem like you can. I've tried putting a whole folder in a container field, but it literally puts the picture of the folder in, not the contents. Can a container field only hold one file at a time?

I would like to save PDF files in a FM database and be able to open them using their origanal program! I know how to do it by just saving a reference to the file, but not by saving the entire file. Would it be possible to move a copy of the files, via applescript, into one folder (associated to the database) during the import. There is a calculated container field (that references that text field) to display the jpg image. I don't mean all the text formats FM gives you - but by copy & paste text into a field the format will appear as styled text...So if user do some research on the web and copy data into FM fields (without any buttons and scripts to paste the text without style) everything looks like patchwork...
