Using FM 6 on Win XP Pro. I've got a portal where users can create records. They select from a drop-down list of ID numbers of people in the database. This ID # field is placed underneath another field that displays the actual name that is related to this id number. When I scroll down the portal, the ID # field is brought to the front making it impossible to see the name field which should be on top. Strangely, this only happens to the portal rows that were visible before I started scrolling. The rows further down the list show up fine as I scroll. If I click on a row where the ID had come to the front, the name comes back to the front, but only for that ro…

I have a parent file which has a specific unique date field. One record for each date for 2004 I also have a child file which holds info regarding training seminars. These can be over 1 day or several days (upto a week). The child file has "Start Date" and and "End Date" fields. I need a portal that will show any child records for seminars which are active on that particular parent record date. Hello everyone. Since FileMaker still refuses to give us a good Aqua UI, I'm trying to mimic Aqua controls and elements. I use Interface Builder to create buttons, tabs, etc., then take screen grabs, and edit them in Photoshop. So far so good. I'm having one slight problem, though. Can anyone tell me if FileMaker supports image transperancy? If so, what image format should I use? I've tried importing PNG, GIF, and PICT. Transperancy doesn't seem to work on any of them. Greetings All, I have a need to populate a single field from either one of two value lists. (I did not want to use one dynamic drop down list) Are there any tricks anyone has used to achieve this effect. Here's how the layout would look: Field |____________| button to drop list 1 button to drop list 2 I can make the two buttons above the same field as the destination, and attach the different value lists to each one, but I can't think of a way to make it look visually appealing and intuitive. It would then dispaly the same choice 3 times. Any help would be greatly appreciated as always. -Frank

I have two databases. One database with the customer information and another database with zipcodes, city and state. I would like to compare the zipcode information (city and state) that the customer gave me with the zipcode information in the zipcode database. I have two questions, one of which I'm pretty sure belongs in this forum (just found this place). 1. I'm creating a layout that contains an image field and a text field that usually has several paragraphs of text. I want to have the text wrap around the image field, but I can't seem to find any way to do that. Is it possible? 2. Same layout, the text won't format because it's formatted in Browse mode. Fine. I thought I was dashing off a demo file, but instead have a riddle in the form of a misbehaving file... The idea is to create a portal that shows which records are actually being browsed, keeping up with all sorts of additions/omissions/deletions, etc. I had no success with self-join relations on the promising Status(xxx) functions. But FM gives us ONE potential handle on the identity of the found set: a summary total field can be analyzed to figure out which records are being totaled, provided only that every total is unique. I have a contact database and have finished it so am now onto reports. I simply want a month to date report, which when you indicate the month, it will display on the layout all the done items for that time period. So i created a portal on the layout with a generic x relationship to done items. However, say in January there are 10 done items, that is fine, they appear but then in March when there are no done items the original 10 items from january are still in the portal list. now i get why, but what i want to do is have portal display the current found set of the done items table. Hello All, I have a "case" record with a PK of case_ID that has a to-many relationship to an "event" that uses case_ID as its parent_ID. The "event" child has an event_ID as a PK which has several to-one relationships with different "event" detail records which in turn uses the event_ID as its parent_ID. hey kiddos. happy holidays to one and all. we are trying to keep track of things like vacation dates, or employees available to work outside their normal schedule...etc. Files being used: employee file: each employee =one record. date file: each date =one record. right now i have thru 12/31/2004. The value list in question derives from a field in another file, and the values in those fields will be frequently edited: more records will be added, others will be deleted, and some will be altered. The problem is that the text field created when a value is selected from the list continues to contain values that no longer appear in the value list itself. That precludes counting carriage returns in the list, which seemed like a good idea, till I thought about it. So is there another way to count the number of items checked in a value list? Oh. I have a really long list of fee codes (+/- 3500), so a "hotlist" is an obvious necessity. I could just allow users to flag the hotlist items in the "Fees" file and display the flagged fees in the "Invoice" file using a conditional menu, but I'd like to give the users a 'professional' interface to create the hotlist, where they can move codes to and from the hotlist....something along the lines of the FM Sort dialogue box. I've tried a variety of relationships (and even tried writing hotlist entries to another file...) nothing has worked... can a brighter mind suggest a solution? Thanks Dave

I have looked for an answer to this problem but can't seem to find it. I have 2 dbs - Clients and Episodes (a given client can have more than one episode of contact). In the Client file, I have 2 portals - one is a brief summary of each episode, the second is a single line portal containing a number of fields giving more complete information about the episode chosen from the first portal. Background: I created a stand-alone kiosk application using FM_dev5.5 consisting of multiple files, multiple relationships and multiple value lists. Some of the value lists take their data form a related field. Problem: The application works fine, pop-up lists work as they should, until sporadically the following happens: all fields with field format set to 'pop-up list' refuse to show the pop-up list. O.K. I'm not sure what I've done wrong but my pop lists are blank in find mode. My database makes extensive use of conditional value lists which display custom values in pop-up fields. These all work fine in browse mode but are now blank in find mode. My value lists are based on a relationship with another file where the match field is called "User". Previously the pop up lists would work fine in Find mode as long as I would first enter a value in "User" and then click on the field with the pop-up. Now all of the pop-ups are blank. Any suggestions?

Hi All, Merry Christmas and all that. I have a problem with a portal that I can't work out. My portal is showing records correctly, but does not allow me to create a new record in the related database via the portal even though the relationship is set to allow this. The error message I get tells me that the relationship is invalid. If it is invalid then why is it displaying existing related records correctly? For each record in my database, there is a billing section. On that section I have a pull down menu with the tweleve months. I want to be able to choose a month and have three fields be filled with information. I want it to display billing information based on the selected month. I am building an Manufacturing Order Process. I have a Product_order_form.db or order.fp5, and a Product_manufacturing_order_form_5.db or Man5.fp5 (order.fp5 & man5.fp5) What I need to have happen is for the user to be able to enter more than one item with its coresponding data fields on one invoice (order.fp5), but for it to automatically create a manufacturing order (man5.fp5) for each item with its coresponding data fields. i.e., <item_no> <qty> <lot_not> <prod_description> <price>. Hello, I have a problem with the entry into fields with value lists defined to them. When I click on a field to display a field value list that was setup for it under Format Field, I can enter te first few characters of the value so that the list will automatically go to the first record containing this value. I.e. I type in "hotdo" and the list will jump to the first value to contain these letters, say "hotdog". I want to use the portal visibility trick to display (or not) a delete button in a single row portal based on the user's access to that record. I have everything set up and the portal visibility works perfectly however I can't get the button to delete the record I am viewing. If "Allow deletion of portal rows" is checked in the portal setup, the first record in the records I am browsing is deleted. If it is unchecked, nothing is deleted. I've tried attaching a script to the button to call an external (through the self-join) script but I can't get it to work. I am having a seemingly intractable problem with unwanted white space on my layout. I want to print a catalogue of contact information - a very straightforward listinf of names, numes, etc. This is sort by County, and some counties have more than one program to list while some coutnies have only the sentence "There are no programs in this county." The data itself is basic things like names and email, plus one field of"description", which varies considerably in length. Hello, I have noticed that when I use value lists as pull down menus or lists inside of a portal, that when the user goes to make these choices, related record, by related record, the other fields in the entire portal flash...like disapper and reappear. It is not changing the values, but it is a little disturbing when entering information. T This is happening in an invoices file where the user is pulling up a style number and then making choices individual to each invoice of size or color ordered. I have a database of every race ever run in the NASCAR Craftsman Truckseries. The db that holds all the race information is called "races". I have another db which shows the complete driver history for each driver...total top tens, wins, top fives, etc. I want to put a portal in the "driver" db which will show me how say driver "Travis Kvapil" did at every track he has ever run on. Hi, Does anybody know if it is possible to display multiple fields in value list yet when choice is selected only the value of first field is taken? To better illustrate my problem, i have a db with EmpID and EmpName fields. i have a portal that's filtered according to two fields. the client number, and the month&year of the jobs. i'm doing some diagmnostic tests, and i noticed that there's a few records from the child file that are making it into the portal but the two match fields don't match. for example, for a portal from december, jobs for a certain client will be from november and december. i need to fix this, but i can't figure out why it's doing this. the relationship seems to be fine, it seems to be that somewhere it's _just_ _not_ _working_. i'm pulling out my hair wondering what it could be, does anyone out there have any ideas??? thanks in advance for any help...…

I have two files. One contains the main items, the second contains the parts that make up the main items. I want to display the main item (a title field) with a list of the related records (records of subitems) from the second file. Very simple I know, I've done it, but my problem is I don't want any borders or boxes when I print, just the text. I've looked and there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of the border or black lines around the portal, at least none that I've found. Is there a way around this?

Hi Guys, Hoping you can help me out. I have a field in a table called estimates. The field name is CustID. I have attached a value list to CustID, which allows you to select the the CustID and Customer name from the customer file. This works great if I want create an estimate for someone in the customer file. My problem is, I would also like to create estimates in the prospects file, so in the field CustID in estimates, I would like the abililty to choose ProspectID and ProspectName. Hi, I currently have a portal that shows 4 fields from another database (ie Order Number, Order Type, Product, Biller). I have a global field called g_biller in the database which contains the portal. As I type a different name into the g_biller field, the portal shows the records that belongs to the biller. Is it possible for the portal to show a specific biller AND a specific product at the same time. So it's like a find with 2 separate field but with a portal? I'm using FM4.1 Thanks

I have a database of clients and another of episodes of contact with each client. I have set up a portal in the clientsdb that shows basic details of each episode in each row. Each client has a unique ID (Christian Surname -> surn chr1, Christine Surname -> surn chr2 etc) and the episodeID is surn chr1-001, surn chr1-002, surn chr2-001 etc). The relationship for the current portal is via the client ID, and the episode number is displayed in the current portal. Hi All, I'm new here. I just came back from Devcon and had an incredible time. I have a question that I think this is the best place for it. But, its not the ideal one. I'm trying to set up a method to duplicate a record by selecting manually which fields will be duplicated. This should be similar to the Import/Export control panel. I want to give the users the ability to select which records to duplicate and which not to. Ideally, each user will use a checkbox or arrow to select which fields will be duplicated. Hi there, I've a db with layout with a field "box" and in each box I've 81 spots where the user can put some biological stuff in it. So, I set up another field with an "external" value list for the 81 spots (in fact a pop up list with simply the numbers). What I would like to do is when the user select a spot number is to eliminate this number from the value list. So, it will be impossible for a particular box to use twice (or more !) the same spot. Of course, when a product will be used the record will be deleted and the spot number will need to return to the spot value list I'm a little bit stuck on this, so thank you in advance for your help

Hello, I created database for sales. One for product with taxe, one for product without taxe, one for the inventory of products and one for the sales. Everything works great execpt for the receipt. I need to print the receipt on a thermal printer. In the database for sale, I created a layout with portal of product with taxe and an other one with product without taxe to compile all sales of the same billing. So, in the CONTACTS file, there would be a portal that shows information from the EVENTS database that allows the user to make choices in the CONTACTS file that would relate to each event. I have searched through a lot of past posts but I have no found the specific answer I am looking for. I have a database with hundreds of records. Each record has a portal that contains several fields with 1 row of data to hundreds of rows of portal data. There have been several times now when users have entered large ammounts of data but had forgetten a line of information. I am trying to link a group of person to a Lab Head. i.e. I have a field Group which contain values AA, BB CC etc... name of the lab head I have a field Person which contain all name of the collaborators (pop-up menu with value list) What I need is to have in the field Person, only the name of the collaborators of head AA or BB or CC... My project involves printing a report on each transaction, including relevant feedback text from the two most recent *related* transactions. I have been using a portal with two rows to accomplish this. The only problem is that the related field's text entries vary tremendously in length. To accommodate the longest, the portal row is a pretty tall brick, but that means that lots of space is wasted on the portal rows with barely any text. I really dislike big white space and wasted page-breaks. As far as I can tell, no sliding/printing options can get a portal row to shrink its height. Right? I have a survey DB where I ask if the people went to one restaurant or another the answer field it's linked to a value list with (yes/No) values, What I need to do is to count the number of times the people answer yes on each restaurant field. Example: Number of records: 20 McDonalds [16] Yes [4] No Italian food [13] Yes [7] No I'm aware that I need to do a calculation, but I'm a newbie with FM so please be kind with me and please give me a hint to solve this little problem. Database A has a field "full name" based on a case statement that if field (1) is yes, then "first name" & "last name". This works properly. Database B has a field that I want to display a pop up list from the "full name" field of Database A. Relationship is correct, yet I get no list. Is it that I cannot have a value list based on a calculated field? If so, what might be the solution? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I am developing an index of articles for a newspaper. We have allowed that each article can have four subjects, so I have created four subject fields. No subject is more important than any other. Of course most articles have only one or two subjects so that the third and fourth field do not have as many values in it. This causes a problem in searching. If one chooses to limit a search by choosing three subjects, say, not all the available values are in the 3rd field. Quick (hopefully) question: Using a DB in FM5.5, and trying to perform a find on a portal field. The field links to a KEYWORDS database from a main CONTACTS file, and each record can have as many or as few keywords linked as it likes. When I enter find mode, I can enter a single item into the KW portal-field, and the find executes perfectly (finding all parent records with that keyword). However, I cannot (to my knowledge) enter more than one keyword at one time this way, as the portal does not recognize that it "should" create a new portal row, etc. Thus, I cannot execute "AND" finds on this field. I want to define a value list in file A that contains items from field X (in the same file) for records with matching field Y. The trick is that I want to exclude the current record's X value (X values are unique) when I'm looking at the value list. Thus, I'm looking for a dynamic value list that changes based on the current record that I'm browsing. Hello all, My details I have a file called Meetings and created a self-join relationship to a file called Mychild. The problem arose when I created a portal in Meetings that went to Mychild. I then created a field in the portal that is Mychild::Title. The field does not show in the portal, I also made the field into a button that would go to the layout Action Items. The button does not work, the field seems invisible. After reading the entry level portal post I thought the problem could be because there is no data in Mychild. Could this be the case? Senerio: Purchase order system using one layout for all departments. This layout has a repeating price field of 75 cells (uses the sliding/printing function). Some departments should not see the pricing entires. Because the font color can not be dynamicly changed (from black to white) I will have to 'mask out' the price fonts from behind using a graphic (similar to a maxicode bar code pattern)in a separate repeating field using the cells as containers. Problem: Setting the background field as a calculation, how do I bring in a pattern for each cell used in the pricing field? (Pattern is in a gobal container)without have to write 75 statements.

In FileMaker Pro 6 I am creating a database that will track meeting minutes, agendas, action items, attendees, etc. I plan on dividing up the layout into different sections according to the different departments of our Real Estate company, for example Business Development, Sales, Closing Department. If my Mac or Windows PC supports the HINDI character set, will Filemaker? Namely, could I have a field with English and a field with a Hindi translation of the english - and depending where I'm sending a report, print it out in either of the two languages? I'm not asking it to translate it for me, I know a human that can do that - just display, store and print either of the two above options. I am using Field A (14 pixels wide) with a pop-up list attached to select the entry. To view the entire list's contents the field would need to be 87 pixels wide. I only need to view the first letter. Three pixel to the right is Field B. It is a calculation field, with entry allowed, to join the text of two other fields. The problem lies in that when I select any field on the layout Field A's 87 pixel wide pop-up list covers the first 60 pixels of Field B preventing viewing the fields content. How can I set the pop-up list behind Field B unless called upon?

I edited a value list's name, this caused the file to crash when I try to use, delete or edit the value list. The field shows up in the browser saying "value list missing" - I recovered and it reported no errors, but I can't remove or edit the offending value list. Any help greatly appreciated. -magilla

Is it possible to limit a portal to display fields from related records that were created after a particular date? In other words, I have one file which creates a record for each patient visit. In a separate file, I have portals that relate back to the patient visit file. I would like to only show patient visit data in the portals after a particular date. Thanks.

I am developing a database that will be an index for a newspaper archive. To cut down on the errors in data entry I would like to link the Date, Volume, and Issue fields in such a way that the data entry person merely selects a date from the pop-up list and this calls up the correct volume and issue number. How can I do that? The data entry will take place over the web and I am using Instant Web Publishing, so that I can't use any fancy scripts. Hello, I have a value list question. I have a FileMaker file which lists about 250 different locations. Each location is a separate record and has about 10 fields. I then have a separate FileMaker file, which connects everything together, and has a drop down menu listing all the locations as a value list. We have set up a portal through a relationship from one file (called Leads) to a file named Line Items. The records in Line items were initially created through yet another portal through the file Orders. Line items are related to Orders through the field Order Number. When they are created a field called Account Number is populated with a Lookup. The file Leads has a portal into Line Items using the field Account Number. When I enter an account number in Leads some but not all of the records in Line Items appear. How do I display a specific image on a layout based upon the contents of a field? Making separate menu layouts for various levels of users is getting to be a hassle. I'd like to use one layout that works for all, but the buttons displayed would be based on the user's passwordd level. So that user pwd "Top" would display button image "Top", user "Middle" would display button "Middle" etc. Using this method I would be able to use the same menu for all and be able to show disabled buttons when appropraiate. I can't quite seems to this set up. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Using FMP 5.0, I'm trying to create an Invoice DB thta includes info from a couple of different DBs. Using the model from the user's guide, I tried to build a portal that would display records from a line item DB that contains related fields from an inventory DB. Problem #! I can't place the related fields from the inventory DB into the portal. OK peeps, I have a conundrum here . . . I need to track entries with a summarized (not summary) field next to the fields. Hi, I'm having trouble getting a display in my portal. Here are the details: From a custom dialog... I prompt for a partial name (self-join relationship on indexed "Family Name") ie "sm" which should result with rows for: "smith" and "small" Enter Find Mode[] Set field ["Family Name","g_familyname"] Perform Find [Replace Found Set] Goto Layout ["Find Family"] The portal appears BUT displays only the "small" row. I have been using a single record file to generate value lists as well as many other uses. I have never had a problem, however I was given an example where this practice breaks down. Ok i have a pop up list that has three choices...November, February, and June. I have a main form which contains a whole bunch of radio buttons. I want to be able to choose a month, say November, and have the form show up with all the appropriate buttons, yes or no, clicked. So what I basically want to happen is for all the data for November to show up when November is clicked. Then when February is selected I want all the data from November to appear and allow the user to change some answers from yes to no. Hi All, i am currently setting up a labels layout. I have used the custom page sizes as it the label i wanted wasnt in the drop down. the label im using is Avery L7163 (99.1x38.1mm x14 labels/page). Now when i come to print out the lables only the left hand side gets printed of the page. There are two labels across the page, but i cant get it to print on the right hand label. Hi guys I've created a portal in which I don?t want to create related records. So "allow creation of related records" is UNchecked and "entry into fields" isn?t allowed.
