I've got one file (eye surgery) in which every surgery is a record. There are two portals that list all patient surgeries, one for the right eye and one for the left eye. Unfortunately, when the right eye has a surgery, the left portal creates a blank entry, and visa versa. Is there any solution to this? The portals look a little questionable with the blank spots in them. Plus, if you click on the portal (button) in a blank spot in the left eye portal, your taken to a right eye's surgical record. I have 2 files, the main file with a portal to the data file....from the main file i only want to print the data specific to the record im currently in....so lets say Record 1 has 5 lines and if im in record one, i want to print that 5 lines of data, but when i look at the data file more data is there since i have more than 1 record on my main file...any help would be greatly appreciated

I have a Contact database and a project database. When data is imported into the contact database, the value list in the Project database will not show up till I close FM and restart the computer. On the network this happens only on the Mac OS 9 computers, there is not a problem with the Windows computer. Is there a way to fix this without quitting FM and restarting FM? Thanks, Rex

I have a strange problem. My client has a filemaker database that filters a value list (materials list) by the type of job selected. The materials are kept in a seperate file. The relationship is working fine except when you tab into the material list field and type in a numberic sequence of a material item number on the 10-key pad, it goes directly to the end of the list. However, if you use the number keys on the main keyboard (horizontally accross), it will go directly to the material item number. Any ideas?

I'm trying to have each row showing in a portal have a number, but I can't figure out how to do it. My Key Field is called Name. If I create a summary (count of Name field) [Running], it does not just count all the records for that particular name, but *all* found records. And when I add to the records by creating new records within the portal, it doesn't update properly in any case. Is there a way to do this so that say, each of the rows for Joe Bar's records show 1., 2., 3., 4., etc. and each of the rows for Nancy Foo's records show 1., 2., 3., etc. ? All My Best, Jeffrey

I am VERY new to FileMaker Pro and am far from understanding programing. In other words I need very simple non-programming language for answers. Here's my questions: I have downloaded Solution Framework and have been customizing it to fit my needs. When I work with several test invoices my subtotal reflects ALL my invoices and not just the one I am looking at (same with Sales Tax). It is taking the subtotal from the line item list. When I print out or preview the invoice from the report module the subtotal is correct. I am baffled and can't figure this out. Can't my subtotal (and Sales Tex) reflect just the invoice I am working on? :crazy:

Hi I have a form with a list of item to be introduced. I can use a lookup and remember the id codes for each item, and compleat all the lines, or... I can group several items and when I introduce the group code all the items from that group just show up on the list. I'm using a portal to do that but the problem is that if the items file changes (ex: item 1 was from group A and now is from group B)all the records on the related file change, even the older ones. Can I freeze the data introduced on a record? Thanks

I have a weird problem. I have a portal that has a listing of prices and taxes for that item. These are simple total items. When I ask for the sum of the totals of prices and taxes I do not always get the correct answer. Somewhere in the process it seems to round off the numbers causing the wrong answer. It doesn't do this all the time which makes solving the problem difficult. Anyone clues and what to check from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Hi there, I'm trying to design a portal with 20 different users, each user(sales-person) has own specific clients. For example User 105 can only access the fields with the user=105 identified. I have a global primarykey to start the search in the portal that can take any of (Name / Refrence No /Phone No of clients) in characters. Portal Data includes "Name", "Refrence" and "Phone No" and grabs the related data for each logged users and stores in a different field i.e. Name105, Refrence105 and Phone105 because related data is in a different (child) file so that calculation field in the Portal grabs different data according to the user logged on and the shows the …

c'mon, folks. i posted this question a while ago but nobody replied with anything... let me ask again: can i have a portal return specific items/values by running a find? for instance, if i have a portal with two columns... one column with some text-data, and another "identifier" column that i would use as a key (yes, or no)... i went into find mode and, in the second column (the key-field), i'd type in 'yes' to have the portal return all the line items that have 'yes' in the key-field... or i could type in 'no' for the opposite to happen? i need to be able to do this or something similar.

I have a file of OS X Themes (buttons, etc.) for Mac OS X system. I downloaded it somewhere, but can't remember where (maybe FM Directory?). The themes are great and offer 8 different colors of buttons. However, several of the buttons have a lime colored line on the left hand section of the button. I don't know how to remove this line. I tried to do something in Illustrator, but my knowledge of that program is limited. Does anyone know how to remove these lines? Does anyone have this file without the lines? I know I've written this in a previous thread but I think people are a bit bored of the title - hehe I have downloaded the Hindi character set and restarted my PC. I can select HINDI as my preferred keyboard character set and write gobbldygook in Microsoft Word and Outlook - no problem. I cannot for the life of me get Filemaker to adopt the new language set set out in the OS - why is this happening? I have been through all the fonts list and none of them work with it so I am stumped! I just get a series of ???????? and nothing even near to he character set I want. please help! Thanks

I am using Windows 2000 and FMP6 to store GIS projects data. I export print layouts from ArcView GIS and save them as *.wmf (placeable Windows Meta File) image format. A portal in my master file (Projects.fp5) shows container fields from an external file (Maps.fp5). I right click in portal field and insert the above picture ('Store only a reference to the file' box checked). Although it stores the picture, the screen starts getting full of bugs. It is also very slow.

Hello again. I have another serious issue. It seems like I end up trying to do the hardest things possible. Anyway, here is the dilemma (in as plain o' english as I can muster...) I want to create a system that allows an end-user to select a product, enter a quantity, and then have the system look up a quantity break unit price. In other words, for each product, there are breaks: 1-5 = .15, 6-9 = .14, 10-19 = .13 and so on, and if you enter 7 into the quantity field, the system returns .14 for the unit price. Currently in each individuals file I have a portal which lists the certifications, the date of the certification, length of the certification, expiration date. I have a pop up list that is using a value list that is being pulled from a related table. i.e. table is a list of creators and their subject area (some art, some architecture). In the main entry db (holds records for individual images) if an image is marked that the subject matter is art, the field for creator will pull a list from the table of all artists only. Right now there are about 4000 different creators. So- when I click in the creator field in the main entry... it take sooo long for the list to appear. Also, the database is being stored on our server. Any ideas how I can speed up process? Thanks much.

This is similar to a previous post, but I still have not made much progress. I have a field called SignInDeposit. This deposit amount changes as often as weekly depending upon the customer, and I would like to keep a "history" of the deposit amounts, shown in a related portal. Currently a new line item in the portal is created via a script that sets the current time, date, and user, and goes to a text field to allow the user to enter a "note". Is there anyway for me to incorporate something into this script and attach it to the fild called SignInDeposit or something I can do to keep this sort of "history"? Any thoughts?? THANK YOU

Hi, I'm trying the make a portal that only shows tour dates to come, and hide passed ones. For example, if a band is having a tour date on 07/16/03, it will show in the portal, once 7/16/03 passes, so will the row in the portal. The problem is, there is no way to have a relation with dates you can't index. Since there child records have to be static dates and not calculations. As well, tour dates could be a year or more in the future, so having a calc in the parent file of a long date range in the only way I can figure this - and I don't like that way Anyone else got ideas?

I have two files: Order.fp5 and Customer.fp5. There is a field named "CustomerName" in Order.fp5. I made its format as "Pop-up menu" and used values from Customer.fp5. Now the problem is: there are 600 customers, the "CustomerName" list is too long to locate a customer. What I want are: 1. When I type a letter in "CustomerName" field, it narrows immediately and automatically the value list to those begin with that letter. Then second letter, it narrows again. 2. If what I input isn't on the list (which means no such customer), Order.fp5 should reject that data and require input again. How can I do that? Thanks in advance to anyone who help me! Ken

I have been experiencing some problems with a very simple fm 5.0 database. The problem is that a value list in the database does not seem to save information consistantly. The value list utilizes checkboxes, with each 'value' being connected to three checkboxes. Only one of the three boxes is marked at any one time. The problem seems to be that when I uncheck one box and check another, this change does not always save. I have not been able to decipher a pattern concerning the problem records, or the way in which I utilize the records themselves. I have two 30 item value lists in the same database for fields called "product code" and "variety". The product code is just an abbreviation of the variety and is unique to each variety (i.e. RB is equal to Russet Burbank). When I enter a product code, I would like to have the corresponding variety auto-enter in the Variety field. Is there any way to accomplish this?

I recently finished a project that I put this nice aqua look too. It looks great and all, at least to me. The main user of the database is colour blind and can't really see it well. He claims to need dark background and lost of contast between text and background etc (use it completly colour blind i think) My question is, has anyone else run into this? Hello FM Community. I am a decent FM developer, yet I have come across a problem. I believe the answer is slapping me in the face but I can't feel it. OK, I hope this isn't something ridiculous, but here goes: 1.) I have a radio-button list called "status" 2.) I have three files. I have tow portals in the first one: one portal for each of the other two files. Same layout, side-by-side. How do I copy the last row of a portal and paste into a separate field. Using this solution: I'd like to place a drop down value list in the RequestLog file to choose a SalesRep. Then a second drop down list below that one to choose a Customer. The choice for SalesRep should filter out the choices offered in the Customer drop down list. Is this possible to do given the relationships I have? How would I set this up? I have a portal that displays fifty lines of info... the way i have it setup right now is that, on each line, i have placed two fields that are read-in from another file called BillableX and TestsPerformedX, respectively. Hi Forum, One of FM's quirks has become a real asset to me. I thought others might be able to use it also. I create my own labels, headings, etc. using 3D text (by stacking 3 texts). FM has a nasty habit of changing labels which are generated when you insert a field onto a layout and have the box clicked that says 'Create Field Label' and you then change the field name in Define Fields! This used to *** me off ... now it tickles me to no end! Create a blank db with only a blank form on it. Create a text field with the first label name you need. I made a small conditional value list to teach myself the concept. For my needs, I would have approximately a dozen conditional value lists that would regularly change. It seems like a aweful amount of work to create something that is admittedly very useful. I wish updating conditional value lists was as easy as updating normal value lists. Any chance Filemaker 7 might include something like this? Is there any work around that someone could suggest. Hi! I tried everything and nothing works if you have forein characters other than latin to filter a portal. It doesn't find anything at all! I tried many ways like "ASCII" characters in fields, etc. Nothing will do I use an English version of Windows with Greek character support and the only compatible font with the least problems, "Arial Greek". Any hints? Is there something i could do, or is Filemaker not supporting it? Thanks

I have a field called LOCATION. Once this is data entered, it is very important that it not be changed by accident, however, intentional changes are OK. Is there anyway for me to have a script run only if the field is changed? This script would place the test that was changed in LOCATION into a related portal, and show exacly what was changed. However, I do not want this script to run on the initial data entry, only if it has been modified from the original entry. Any thoughts??

I have a portal with financial information on my client. what i would like to do is total how much each client is paying each month into they various investment schemes..The first field is a pick list which applies to either the client or spouse the second field contains the monthly contribution figure. there are normally between six to 10 records in each portal. Say I have a portal on a layout in my "Main" file listing the related casenotes from the "Casenote" file. I have some field on the layout below the portal that are also from the Casenote file. My goal is when I click on a row in the portal, it will update the fields below to show the information of that portal row. Below is an image of what I'm trying to accomplish. Some time ago I posted a problem I face with Duplicating records which are related via a portal. I still face this problem today and I hope someone can help me. I work at a post production company that uses hand written notecards to write down time codes of work that are layed off to video tapes. I have been working to create a filemaker pro database system to eliminate these handwritten cards which are often lost through misuse. Basically there are two layouts, card view and list view. I am developing a database for media contacts in my office. Right now I have two relational databases -- one for the reporters and another for where they work. I am working on a solution that scores and tracks student test results (multiple choice test). I have two databases, test_key.fp5 and student_responses.fp5. Each test question has a unique identifier (concatination of test ID and question number). I have a one-to-many relationship established (based on question_ID) betweeen test_key.fp5 and student_responses.fp5. is there a way to delete a portal row's record by itself from the portal and the related db? i have the [prtal set to allow creation of related records thru the portal. the problem is if someone clicks in the "empty"/potentially new portal row at the bottom, anticipating a new record/portal row, then types any key, it creates a new record, which occasionally does not end up being needed, and so clutters up the portal with empty rows mixed in depending on the sort key. is there a way to delete these portal rows/related records without going to the related db? there is no need to use the related file unless i'm deleting these empty records, so i don't want to build …

Here is my math question. If I find a group of records I would like to count them in groups of nine. So say I find 30 records my list will return. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, 1 2 3 My solution is: Mod(Status(CurrentRecordNumber),9) But I get a zero when it hit the multiples of 9 so with out a condition is there a clean solution so I get a 9 instead of a zero.

our solution has 8 files or so, one or two of them are not accessed by the end users, and i have basically a tabbed interface to switch between the files. several of the files are related one to many, and i want the option of selecting which records are viewed when the destination db is reached/opened. for example, take two of the files i have. there's the client file, which has client info, name, address, etc. each client= one record, and each record has it's own sequential id number. then there's the job file, each job has it's own record, with it's own unique id, and one client per job, but each client can have more than one job. right now, in t…

I think I have a way to do this but thought there might be a cleaner way. This is pretty simple concept. I have an invoice layout and only want to show data related to discounts if the order has had a discount applied. So if the person paid full price, I don't want to remind them that there could have been a discount by displaying a "discount" field title and empty field on their invoice. So the field title and field content should display only if the order has a discount applied, otherwise the space allocated for this information is blank. If anyone has done this and is willing to share the results, I would appreciate it.

I am trying to be able to show if multiple cities with the same name (but from differnet states) exist for data entry users when they enter a city name. I have a master file and a related city file. So, when someone enters Portland, for example, a portal would show Portland,OR and Portland,ME. Is this the right approach? How could I do this?

FM 6, Mac 9.2 I am trying to exactly duplicate a Header part from one file in a separate file. Normally, I'd use the object size palette and set exact pixel dimensions. But an odd problem has surfaced. The zero point on the Graphic Ruler in Layout Mode (using pixels as units, though changing untits doesn't change the point) seems to be arbitrarily set to a weird place in the new file. In the old file, if I select the header part, the object size shows me that the header is 14 pixels down from the top and 14 in from the left. This looks about right, as the zero point on the scale seems to be in the upper leftmost corner. But in the new file, Object Size tells m…

I'm developing a contact database, and I need to track referrals. The default for a contact is no referral, alternatively "referred to" or "referred from". In each of the alternate cases the list of salesmen (...they are all men ) that a contact is referred from or to is the same, so I'd like to use one list for both cases. I've looked at the "Country" example on conditional value lists, but I can't figure out how to modify it to solve my problem. Please help.... Thanks Dave

I was looking for a way to do the following like Access does: I go to filed NAME for example. I start typing the "J" from Jones. The first name that has a J as the first letter shows. I continue to type the "o" and the first Jo shows. Then "n" and the first name with Jon shows. I can hit enter to accept the current name or continue entering letters. I maintain a database for a club. The club is divided into various "Houses". A member can belong to more than one "House". I have a single text field called "Household" that displays check-boxes with the name of each House (there are currently seven houses in all). I said "currently" because the number of houses changes year to year and, sometimes, the name of the House changes at the beginning of the year. All I do is edit the value list, adding new houses, and removing or renaming others as needed. Hi, As relationships are dead in find mode I can't make the dropdown list appear. Is there a workaround? Hi, What I want to know is: Is it possible to put a main database and the related portal database in two seperate runtime modules? CASE: I have a db with 20 fields. 5 of them are stored in another db connected as a portal. I edit 15 fields weekly and send the database to the other person. At his end he must be able to edit his db with 5 fields without using the main database. But when he starts the main database at his end, his 5 fields must showup in the portal window in the main db. I'm used to perform a zoom for my windows in every navigation script. I paste a blank rectangle in the background of my layouts that exactly fit the dimensions I need for the windows. But I never did this in list view. I've just tried to paste in the footer an object that has the same most-right and most-bottom settings as the usual rectangle, but this doesn't seem to work. Hi all I am trying to do two submenu off a main menu using the visibility portals. These two submenu would over lap each other. That is the problem. I have repeating information that I want to display using a portal. The problem is that my layout will not accomodate the number of records present. Ok so I am trying to make a staff availiability database, I already have a relational DB for the staff and now I want to log their avaliabilities. Ok maybe I did not made myself clear. I have to pop up menus. (1) Popup menu number 1 has the following id values: 01.01,01.02,01.03,01.04... and so on. (2) Popup menu number 2 has the following class values: History,Algebra,Sciences,P.E....and so on. When I select the value 01.02 from popup menu 1 I would like for popup menu 2 to set itself to "Algebra" because that is the class with the id 01.02. I am developing a FM solution for a church and the staff wants to be able to view a list of all our members (2,000+) and insert them into an attedance database. I basically have a portal to our members file and when the user clicks on their name it inserts them into the attendance file. Everything works fine. They have asked me if it is possible to have a list pop up that they could simply highlight a name by typing part of it and press the enter key to select them. The other day, I was looking at a Filemaker solution for accounting called "EasyAccounting with Filemaker". I found a very interesting implementation of user interface in this solution. They were able to dim fields, portals and buttons on the fly depending on what field or checkbox was filled. I did not know this could be done in Filemaker Pro. This is a great way to help users understand your solution and do error checking without all the dialog boxes saying, "You forgot to fill...". Hi all Is it possible to do a lookup in a portal by picking a record. I have two db- one has a description of welding rods to weld various steels. I would like to view in the second db all of the welding rods available to weld a particular steel. Then i want to pick that rod and preview the information pretaining to that welding rod. This is my first time. Please be gentle. I would like to know how to stop portals from displaying an extra row when not necessary. I have a portal displaying related records (in another file). Next to each portal entry is a button that takes you to the related record. Unfortunately, the portal displays an extra row and consequently the button?? How can I stop this?? This is strange -- check out the attached screen shot. At the top is a green box, drawn in FileMaker. Overlaying it are some tabs, which are again just FileMaker buttons. They should be solid gray, but instead appear as nearly invisible outlines! Any ideas?

Hi, I'd like to turn the value list items into records in a database. So far I've succeeded in putting the items in a global and counting the number of items (with a patterncount function). I want a script with a loop that would do the following: -go to the first line in my global -copy the data -create a new record -paste the copied value item - go to the second line in my global -....etc until the last value list item in my global has been turned into a record. This is both a HELP request and a warning to other developers. Situation Machine Specs: P4 2.4GHz with 1GB RAM on XP Pro English Upgraded both my FMP5.5 Japanese AND FMP5.0 English versions to FMP6 E and J respectively. Both Japanese and English version run on the same machine and have never had any problems doing this since FMPv2. Problem Using FMP6 opened db's made with or converted to FMP5. I'm pretty new to FileMaker... but here it goes... I'm creating a user list database and I have records that contain fields for company name, region (north east, etc), state, and city, and I've been trying to make the database as userfriendly as posible (lot's of buttons).
