FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. i am going to move my dbs to a Raid and Host the dbs from the raid through my FM Server. 1. Is this advisible? 2. The raid is backed up seperately to the FM Server and i was wondering if when this backup occurs it will cause any corruption to the hosted databases as they will still be being hosted? PS.The FM server mounts the Raid volume through a netork! Gracias, Ricardo.

  2. I am in the very early stages of planning a web enablement project and one of the concerns is this: What happens to the web clients when the FileMaker Server pauses to run it's backup script? Currently the sum of our FileMaker Databases is about 1.2 gigabytes. This takes about 15 minutes to copy over the network. We know internally when this is about to happen because of the FileMaker Server message stating that a scheduled backup is about to occur, but what happens to the web browser clients? How has anyone else managed this?

  3. Does anyone know if the existence of a backside cache (L2/L3?) on a Mac running FMServer 5.5 (OS9 or X) make for a large performance difference? I have been considering a G4 800MHz w/o backside. I cant access the fmbench site search to see if there is a comparison of the 733 with and without. Filemaker cust service says no it uses the system RAM much more but some other benchmark sites (barefeats) seem to think that it makes a big difference in database applications. If anyone has fmbench exports they can email me i would appreciate it. Thanks

I'm running FM Server on 8.6, and my client machine (my own laptop) is running OSX 10.1.2; I was exporting a 400MB database from the server onto my laptop when I ran out of disk space. I got the "out of space, trying to find space in the file" error and I cancelled via command-period. However, FMPro on my laptop hung (or it was proceeding very very slowly) so I performed a force-quit on it. The server is right next to me, and the first thing that happened was the server shut down - we've got an auto-reboot dongle on the server, so maybe FMServer just crashed, but nevertheless, it is a bit worrying to me that a client machine can force-quit and the result can be that the s…

  7. A friend of mine has been running a FMP solution (around 30 files, v5.5, all Wintel machines) via FM Server 5.5, on a NT 4.0 machine (sp 6). He recently switched it from a P3 to a P4 machine, with everything else (OS etc.) identical. The problem is that now FM is running significantly slower, to the point of being useless. When he takes FM off the machine, it works just fine, but when he puts it back on the problems reappear. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions as to what he should look at, consider, etc. to solve this. Many thanks.

  8. Does anyone know what a service-specific error 10 might be? (or more importantly what is causing it) I am running NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 with FileMaker Server 5.0v2. Approximately every 2 weeks the service crashes and this error appears in the event viewer. (FileMaker Server Service Terminated with a Service-Specific Error 10) If I don't get any clues here in the forum, I'm going to try FileMaker's support. Thanks in advance!

I realize this may be a RTFM question, but here goes: On FM Server, I've got a search routine where users can build a list of selected items via a global field. It seems to me that there should be a conflict between users - i.e., if one user has selected an item, it should be selected for anyone else currently doing a search. 61. Hey kids. Somewhere on this forum - can't remember where - I read that it can cause problems if you have FMServer running on the same computer as a client version. I was wondering if anybody could confirm this, and let me know what the problems are. We have a Windows NT 4.0 server running FMServer 5.0 (as a service, of course), and we also have Web interfaces for some of those files. So, we had to put FMUnlimited 5.0 on the same machine. Is this a problem? Is there some way to share the files over the intranet with unlimited access, without actually having FMUnlimited running? I'm a little worried. Thanks. Paul

  64. Good Day: My client has FM Server 5. They have 17 database files only 1 of which is large. There were 4 people in the office accessing the database. They have a new employee, however, if she tries to access the database, they receive the "too many users " error. How can I check to see how many users they are allowed? If they are allowed 5, what might be the problem? More info >> If they all shut down to let the fifth person on, they have trouble getting back in through the Host. I did post this yesterday on the Network Forum but no replies

  66. v5.5 Server for Mac seems pretty straight forward on using the Disconnect Idle Guests feature. Can anyone tell me how it relates to the _Disconnect from FileMaker Server when idle_ feature/checkbox at the password level for the database? More specifically, must the password level feature be turned on in order for the Server Disconnect Feature to engage? The help info for this topic appears to confuse the word guest and database constantly making it very difficult to understand.

  69. I just installed FM Server 5.5 on a new G4 with OSX Server Version 10.1.2. I haven't ever used FM Server before so I am becoming acquainted today. The only odd thing I have noticed so far is that when I open the Remote Admin files on my iMac with FM 5.0 client and open the "Get Details" window, I get two lines of zeros instead of the file or guest info I was expecting to see. Any ideas? I only have one file hosted right now. I have it open in two places at the moment. Also, I have read a lot of posts about the backup scheduler not working, but my limited testing seems to be going OK. I also read one post that said FM 5.5 should run on OSX and not OS…

  75. Currently we're running 1 Server v3 with 25 clients v4.1. At this moment we're at the decision point of upgrading to FM5.5 Recently the old FM-server3 setup was moved from an old NT4 server to a 4cpu W2000 server. Performance however did not improve. (An earlier test of the old setup on NT4 with only a faster CPU made a lot of difference) I know performance (or rather the lack of it) can be caused by many things. I'm wondering whether others would share some of their experiences with upgrading, especially with regard to performance changes. Some hints on what to avoid or take a good look at would also be appreciated very much.

  77. Hi, Can anyone shed some light on why Filemaker Server 5.5 would be shutting down (as if Stop Server' had been clicked) and deleting folders containing Filemaker files!!! I know it sounds like a virus, faulty files, etc. I (and Filemaker) have tried everything: the latest Norton AV, Disk First Aid, Hardware Test CD, Norton Utilities, replacing files with 3 month old backups, reformatting every disk on network, isolating the network and then reintroducing machines individually, installing only Filemaker clients on every machine, etc., etc., etc.... This has been going on for three months and as helpful as they've been, Filemaker seem unable to commit them…

Dear friends, I run approximately 30 databases on FM Server 5.0, through FM Unlimited onto the web. I was dismayed to discover this morning that all of my databases now have only 50 records in them (as opposed to over 1,000 in some). All databases are protected and backed up every night. Unfortunately, the back up also only has fifty records. Do you have any idea how this could have happened? Any similar experience? Thank you, Rob Mc

I need some advice here. I installed FMpro 5.5 on the server and associated terminals of an insurance company. All works well except when the following problem occurs. Some of the terminals when connecting with FMPro on the server, try and take over control and want the server transfered to make their terminal the host. Some do, some do not. Am I missing a setting here somewhere? This is really confusing the entire office when accessing their main data base which is the one I created for them. Thanks in advance... 92. Filemaker Server is a database server application. It is functionally similiar to Oracle or Sybase. You still need Filemaker Pro client applications installed on each workstation in order to access the databases hosted on Filemaker Server. Each copy of Filemaker Server will support up to 125 open databases and up to 250 simultaneous users. If you have more than 125 databases you can simply run more servers in order to host all of the databases. I have 5 Filemaker server running here. It is certified for Win2000. Goto http://www.filemaker.com/it/whitepapers.html for a bunch of white papers and best practices documents. Lots of good information here.

Hi jhon, You should not have your backup program touch open FileMaker files. Use the built in scheduler of FileMaker Server to periodically write file copies to another directory, and then backup those copies. Then, whatever backup system you choose, set it up to avoid touching the FileMaker Server directory. An alternative backup plan that can work is to periodically stop the FileMaker Server service, and while it is stopped (and all files closed), have your backup service run. After that, just start the FileMaker Server service. This plan works fine if a nightly backup is sufficient. Good luck, Andrew

I've got two sets of images in a database. One set is small, so it is stored within the db, but the other set of images are quite large (they're a hi-res and lo-res of the same image). The problem I'm having is that FM Server won't deliver the referenced (large) images to the clients. Am I missing something obvious? The images are JPEGs and it all works fine in single-user. thanks Stanley
