FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

How do I add 100 years to an existing date field. The date is showing as year 1900 and I need it to show as the year 2000. This was an import from a ClarisWorks database. I have tried everthing I can think of to add 100 years but it doesne't seem to work.

i need to know how to do something. right now the database has a few fields, Fristname, Lastname, OS, Memory, and userid. i set up a calc field that takes all those fields and list them in a string. so what i need now is a calc that will look throught the database records and find records that have like 2 things in common. like as you fill in the fields on a record you have a field that is showing the record numbers that have the same string info.. does that make any since?

I'm using FM5unlimited, Webstar 4.3, Lasso plug-in, LetterRip, and some applescript to record email messages intoa web accessible archive. Recently Filemaker started hanging with a dialog box stating "Unable to write to disk" Tried changing the memory setting from save on idle to save every 10 minutes or as needed, and that slowed down the occurance of the error message but not entirely. The site does get a bit of traffic which keeps FM very busy, but this error is a show stopper for the whole operation. If anyone has seen this problem or can suggest a fix, please let me know. When I run my application on a windows NT 4.0 machine, no problem. Run it on my desktop running Win 95 or Windows ME and I crash to desktop with the following error. MSVCRT.DLL error. Does anyone know if this is a division by zero error or have experience with this problem? Help?

When I try to open FMP5 on my PC running Windows NT 4, the splash screen appears and I can see the font menu being built. At some point during this, the system crashes ("beginning physical memory dump"). The README file that comes on the install CD addresses this potential problem, saying that it may be due to a corrupt font file. It advises you to restart the system, remove the corrupt font, delete the file "FileMaker Pro Fonts.FMF", and restart the application. I've deleted FileMaker Pro Fonts.FMF but am not sure how to find the possibly corrupt font on my system. Why is there no way to copy a script from one file to another? I have some rather complicated ones that I'd rather not have to re-enter. Also... can you get a layout from one file to another?

We use FM Pro5 unlimited version for Web Purchase Requisition access. Often times user wants to re-order the same item purchased in the past. How do they duplicate the order once they found the old one?

I represent a photographic agency. We have about 100,000+ images, jpegs (200-500K) which we need to put on a database. 1. Is Filemaker pro suitable? I imagine each image would have 4/5 fields associated with it, i.e. Name,Location, Description, Category etc. Would we be able to search through the images using these fields? 2. When we search for an image, i.e. dog, can all results be previewed as thumbs on a page. i.e page 1 of 5 , 10 images/thumbs per page? Clicking a thumb takes you to the actual image file? Hi group. Hope someone can help me with this. I'm designing a layout which has numerous fields, most of which have defined value lists. I'm trying to get it so I can merge them onto a pre-written form letter. They need to be such that there are commas between words and periods after sentences. My fields are such that the user may need to choose more than one value. I've placed the <<merge>> parentheses in the appropriate location, but cannot pre-place commas because the fields may not always have values. Any suggestions on using merged fields more efficiently? We have a record, in the record is a field that has info separated by colons, Ex: blue:green:black we want to make a pull down menu with this information. We can't figure out on how to make filemaker recognize the ( in the field, so that the pull down menu sees each bit of information as separate info. We know how to enter the info to make a pull down menu, but not how to make it recognize what is in the field. Thanks

Hi after doing a search for duplicates how can I delete them searching for duplicates using the "!" mark shows the original record plus the duplicates so using the "Delete Found Records" feature is not possible I want to keep the original record while removing the duplicates any ideas??? THANKS

Hi, I've encountered an irritating problem after converting an existing FMP4-DB (Mac) to FMP5 (win 2000): After the conversion the "predifined custom sorting" that can be specified with the web companion no longer work correctly. It seem as if the web companion dosn't get the identity of the valuelist right. When I check the sorting criteria afterwards the "custom order based on value list" is checked correctly, but in stead of the name of the value list, it just states <unknown>. As a result the sorting is done alphabetically and not as intended using the sorting order stated in the value list. Have anyone experienced the same problem? (and found a solution) …

This is a continuation of my last posting about the Recover command. Live Oak suggested a UPS since he seems to think it's a rare occassion. I believe it happens more frequently than Filemaker admits. I'm using FM5 on Win98 and trying to built a Kiosk solution that has 4 files that appear as one to the user. My goal was to trap the error about using the Recover command, and then just replace the file with a backup copy. In the last 8 months of using FM5, I have had a number of files get clobbered and require recovery. I believe this happens if Windows freezes as FM is in the process of updating its indexes. Now when the user is creating a quotation in the quotations database they have to select a customer. Have been using FM for appprox 5 years, FM2 then FM3 now FM4 for managing our listings, feature cards etc on 4 Win98 PC's, peir to peir network. Installed all updates to bring to V3. For window/feature cards we previously printed cards from fm and glued on photos. Now we are going digital camera. Need to print cards complete with photo out of FM. I am trying to find a way to capture the find criteria so that it the criteria (ie date range) will display at the top of a report. For example, I want to know the work in progress from 2/1/01...2/13/01. Once the "set" is found, I need to have the date range displayed at the top of the report. Is there a way to capture a find range and put it in a field?

Set up a password, change the "available menu commands" to editing or none. The challenge is that doing this will dsiable ALL the shortcuts, so you'll have to make buttons on the layout to perform finds, make new records etc.

In FM Pro 5, when I try to remotely open a file not already open on a host computer I get a message indicating that the file is read only, and I cannot change anything. I have enabled sharing, as well as access priviledges through users & groups but it does not work. Everything is OK if the file is open on the host first. Is this a bug or a "feature"? How can I get around it.? I can't have 75 databases open at once.

I have an Invoice file and a line items file for items/goods sold, would it be wise to use the same "items" file for recording payments as well. If I keep all purchases and payments with in the same file I can create a Statement type invoice. or should I have a seperate file for payments?

Does the database have password protection? Has the machine's hard disk been checked for errors? Is FMP updated to the latest patch level? Des the OS have the latest updates installed? Do you have a backup?

If I upload a fp5 file, set as multiuser, to my webhost, then change the file and folder permissions on the website to rwx, should I not be able to add new records or edit existing records from my desktop? I can browse to the site's folder and choose the file that I uploaded and open it. I cannot add new records or alter the records that are already there. I can navigate to all records and perform finds as well as change the form layout. Thanks

Can anyone recommend the best procedure for sharing a database file between two computers in two locations. Changes are made to each database at each location and then copied to the other. I have copied the .fp3 after changes are made on to a zip disk and then when brought to the second location I have dragged the file over the .fp3 file in that computer in Windows Explorer. Is there a better method using some sort of back-up and restore command. I am currently using Filemaker Pro 4.0 under Windows 98SE. Any suggestions?

I am having a problem with running scripts over the web. I have set this up so that some DBs work, and successfully run scripts through the web, but others give me a 102 error (missing field). Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this problem?

Dear Friends, I have adapted one of FMP's templates for personnel records to my small mail order needs, I would like to give all my 2500 customers a unique ID number. I know how to give all new customers an ID number but I have come stuck with all the present records, I think i nedd a script or something but i have no clear idea where to start. The auto enter from previous record only works in the current session. If you close out and re-open the file there is no previous record. You would need to set up an open script to find the last record created and set those value(s) in some global fields then use the globals to populate the fields.

After I installed Filemaker Pro 4 on a Windows 98 computer I was not able to enter data in several of the fields with pull down menus. Other pull down menus worked fine. This has happened on several PC's with Windows 98. However, when I installed the same Filemaker on another PC with Windows 98 it worked. I am also able to access all fields from a Mac.

I'm doing a Kiosk retail product using FM5 under Windows 98. I am trying to trap and handle the Recover command (by using a backup file instead of recovering) in a script. At the top of the script I have Set Error Capture (ON), and I'm testing immediately after the OPEN statement with Status(CurrentError), but the error never gets trapped and the system displays a message about using the Recover command. Is is possible to avoid a user seeing this message and having to use the recover command? If the Web Companion generates an error code (805 according to the documentation), why doesn't FM by itself do the same thing? Thanks for any assistance

Basically, he wants something that he can download to a laptop and bring to a client, have all the data there, perhaps enter new stuff and then sync up with the database at the office. I am running a serial number database in a major solution, running on FMP 5.0 server. Problem is is that when users ask for a serial number in that database and increase the number by one, the field is not updated immediately. This may give two users the same number when accessing the field shortly after each other. Is the any possibility of forcing the data update on the server? As I am aware the "Flush Cache to Disc" does not work on servers? ------------------

I have an archivist that I am thinking of building a database for. The one thing that keeps us from doing it in Filemaker is that fact that once you enter data is automatically saved unless changed. She has users (not very careful users) making changes to an archive database where she is paranoid that precious data will be changed and can not be retrieved. Therefore, she wants all records to stay the same until the user does something positive (like click a save button). Is there any way that people have found to provide this "commit" function in FM? how can i retrieve data from a fm database that is sat on an NT sever from our isp, it works fine locally, but not when we have uploaded our files, please help as our client does not want 2 use MS Access to recreate his database, but so far we can not retrieve the data from FM after it has been uploaded.

In FM5 I want to print thefiles fields and field definitions. Under FM5 help I am told to go under "file" to "print" and I will be given to option to print field def's. All I get, however are the options connected with my HP printer and nothing relevent to FP5. Where have I gone wrong??

Here's the deal. It's a SIMPLE layout, just a bunch of fields. I'm shrinking and sliding up, no problems. However, the fields are running through the page margins, and when I preview and print, the records that cross two pages often will show 1/2 a line on the bottom of one page, and the other 1/2 of the line on the top of the next page. We publish church directories with FileMaker - we just upgraded 100+ seats to FM5 from FM4.1. Most are on Win98 and we have three NT FM Servers. But our publishing dept uses Mac's and has small files - in single user mode - stored with image files on a Novell 5.1 server. These files are used to drive Xdata and are currently in 4.1 format. I recently upgraded from FM 3.0 to 4.0. I keep a database of clients with approx. 7,000 records on two computers in different locations. After converting my file to the new program it remained a managable size of of approx 900KB which allowed me to transport it between computers using only a floppy. After only adding a few dozen records the file has suddenly grown to 2.2MB in size. Using 3.0 even with 9,000 records the file size never exceeded 1.0MB How do I get the size back to where it belongs for easy transport between computers when it is updated?

A few weeks ago I asked the forum how to email from Outlook/Entourage and received helpful information and as far as I knew all was working like a dream! - Until this wonderful option was revealed to different departments within my company.... I have a "company" database and a "contacts" database with a portal in the "company" database showing the contacts related to their company. I have a script that prints out labels of all employees from a found set in the "company" database. But what I would like, is to put the employees into groups, to mark them in the portal, and then only print labels for all company's with contacts that belongs to that group. Can anyone help? I have set up a database to describe the location of cells in Liquid Nitrogen stores.It comprises two relational databases, namely Cells database, which describes cell types and gives details regarding that cell type such as growth media etc. The second database (Banks database) describes cell location within the actual Liquid Nitrogen storage system and comprises 3 layouts. Hi. I'm trying to pretty up the UI by replacing the grey buttons with pictures/icons. But they all look ugly, with really really bad aliasing. I know that FMP reduces the image to 72dpi but the same picture looks far uglier in FMP than it does in other programs. Any workarounds/tips/suggestions? jeff

You could try this: First find/sort the records required. Cha ge to a layout that has only the required firlds on tit. Use the "Copy All Records" command to concactenate the text from thenfields together, then paste into a global field. Use the global field for the mail process.

I need help creating a report. The database is for keeping track of ticket sales thru a variety of outlets for tour dates. The report must display the number of concert tickets sold by the different outlet types (bookstores, churches, radio, etc.) in different cities that are part of a tour 'run' of dates. I want it to look like this: RUN [March] OUTLETS CITY1 CITY2 CITY3 outlet type1 outlet type2 outlet type3 I am having trouble getting the report to sort and display the data. I want to get all records beginning with the letter 'I' to sort first. In that field I started all records beginning with the letter 'I' with a space. When I sort they remain in the alphabetical order. I tried selecting custom sort and sorting by ASCII instead of English but no luck. It seems to me that I could do this with FM 4 or perhaps before I installed OS 9.1 Is this a FM problem or is it an OS problem or am I doing it wrong? Help please

I want my windows to restore to the size I have designed them to be, not what Windows98 thinks is cool. Whenever I "Restore" a window after "Maximizing" it (using the buttons in the title bar) the window does not restore to the size I want it to be, rather it restores to some sort of Windows98 (or FMPro5) default size and position. How can I change the default size and position? Surely Filemaker did not leave out such an important feature. Thanks, Ed

I am currently running online (job) application forms for two large UK blue chips. I am using WebStar 4.3 Lasso 3.6 and FMPro 5 Unlimited. I have been running all on the same server (i know it's not the best idea!) with no particlar probs (about 100 -200 hits a day and of course they only add,edit,search-for one record each). Do any of you know approx the threshold at which point I'll start falling over. A bit of a strange request I know but I need to know when to go cap in hand to get my RAIC, extra copies of software etc. without the hassle of having to set it up in an evening because we're going down in flames!!! So they want a DB that exports records in .mdb (MS Access) format -- of course, I'm on a Mac, so... I could set the export script on a Windows-based machine, but is it worth it? That is, can I set the export format as .mdb from a Windows machine?

Does FileMaker Pro have a reader associated with it? I am collaborating with someone who owns FileMaker Pro and only need to search their database. I do not need to edit/create records - just search/view. Please let me know where I can find such software if it exists.

Is there any way to increase the width of hte status area? I have layouts with names that are too long to show completely in the status area. I would like to increase the size so that I could see the full names of the layouts.
