Hi, I am new to server and have a question similar to xochi's post about global containers. I noticed that if I close the file and then add the global container, everything works fine. My question is I am usually a remote user. I access the database from a different state. I can administer the server, but I do not have access to the hard copy of the hosted file on the server computer. Is there a way to add a global container without that access?

I need help diagnosing the following error which appears using FM 5.5 while accessing a multi-user database which resides on a server. Users open their desktop FM 5.5 (Windows XP or W2K), then do a File Open. Although this is not recommended practice (file on server, application on desktop), this is what I have with my users. Only one user gets this message: Sorry. Filemaker is unable to update the disk this file is on. Click continue to try again, or click Exit and copy this file to another disk. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks. [email protected]

I'd like to have a global container field that holds my corporate logo to use in the header on all reports. I know that when using FM Server, a Global is actually "local" to the current user, so I thought I could solve the problem with the following setup: Table "Graphics" which contains 1 record. Logo (a regular container field) gcLogo = Logo (a calculation field that is a Container with global storage) However, I can verify that gLogo is blank. Next, I tried a similar setup, but used a self-relationship in the graphics file to make sure the global calc was working: Logo (a regular container field) Constant1 = "1" gcLogo = SelfRelat…

I am setting up FMP7 Server Advanced, as an upgrade to FMP Unlimited 5, by creating a new database on my PC FMP7, and copying over to the "databases" folder on the server. When I attempt to open the remote, and select the file on the server, it brings up the "Maximum Number of Licensed Users" Error, and closes FMP7. The server has it's FMP7 Server Advanced license. I have my FMP7 ordinary license. There are no other FMP7 users on this network. What am I doing wrong. Please help!

Using FM Server 7v3, I find two very serious bugs. Can anyone else confirm? Bug #1 Make a global calculation field equal to a text constant, i.e. kgKey1 = "Work" (calculation, global storage) Add the field to a layout and verify that the field has the right value. Now, go to table definition, duplicate the field definition, and change it, i.e. kgKey2 = "Home" (calculation, global storage) Add the field to your layout. Notice that the field will not have the correct value. You must re-open the database for the global field to refresh to the correct value. Bug #2 Global calcs that reference a summary on a self-relation hangs filemaker ser…

We are building a FM solution based on FM Server Advanced. FMPro users will be uploading mass data, while web users willl retrieve it via CWP. I estimate the database will have millions or tens of millions records in a short period of time. There will be 2 or 3 FMPro users and 100s of web users. Is a Filemaker SErver a right tool for database of this size? Does anybody deployed such a huge solution? Thanx in advance Cdda

Hi all. I get an error when I try to enable database sessions for XSLT publishing. When I toggle the radio button to yes and click the apply button an error message appears at the top of the page. Fortunately, it's extremely informative. It says "An unexpected error has occurred." Is this happening to anyone else? More information: Windows 2000 Server, FileMaker Server 7 Advanced (v2 update), using port 8080 for web publishing.

Hey all Just had some questions about Server 7 Advanced.. since there's no trial for it I can't just find out for myself. Just so you all know, I'm no database/computer expert, i'm just the one in charge of the computer related duties. Lemme just outline the setup we have right now.. We have 2 offices.. one has our server(5.5) with 4 clients(v6), the other has 4 clients, and 1 computer using a remote desktop kind of program to use the client that's on the server. we have a VPN set up between the 2 offices. We have a few other people who work outside our offices who use information from our database, and a 3rd office will be opening up which will need access…

Does anyone know how I can set up virtual directories and have them Filemaker web publishing extensions enabled for them? For example, I want www.bob.com/fmi/config to be able to databases for bob.com but also have www.bob2.com/fmi/config to be able to configure bob2.com's databases. Any ideas? When I created a new virtual server in IIS, I'm not sure how to extended filemaker web publishing to the new virtual server.

Hi gang, Two related problems have sprung up for us. FM Server Advance 7, on an XServe with OS X server 10.3.8. First, we noticed that we could not reboot our server remotely, it would hang and never complete the reboot cycle. Someone from the datacentre would have to go and manually reboot. Second, when I tried to put on the v7.3 patch for the Web Publishing Engine, the updated kept saying that it could not install because the web publishing engine was running. OK, used the Server Admin program to stop the FM Server, used my web browser to administer the server, turned off web publishing. Still couldn't install the patch, web publishing engine still runni…

I'm currently hosting one DB file with FMP 7v3 on a 533MHz G4 with 512 MB RAM. This configuration has proven very stable for the past 9 months serving to 4 concurrent FMP clients, and up to 5 concurrent (~150 total) IWP users. Now I'm going to need more concurrent FMP clients, and I'll need to move to server, and since I'm using IWP heavily for remote users, I'll need server advanced. My question is: Will I be able to make use of the 533 G4 for anything with server advanced? I won't be drastically increasing my traffic compared to when I used FMP to host, but I get the impression that if you want to put both the WPE and FMS on the same machine, the 533 G4 wo…

One day I could not access the /fmi/config page on my webserver. I checked to see if the Web Publishing Engine service was running, and in fact, it was. I decided to go ahead and restart the service. Tried /fmi/config again and got nothing. At this point I decided to just go ahead and uninstall the Web Publshing Engine and reinstall. Upon uninstalling I got this error: then this error after hitting OK. Just hitting OK, I decided to reinstall the Web Publishing Engine and was then prompted with this error. After getting this error, the Web Publishing Engine does not show up in the services tab.. but it does say that its installed in Add/Remove p…

Hi, I am currently hosting a FM 5 database on a networked PowerMac G4 - 450 w/ 512MB RAM that is running Fm Server 5.5. I have noticed that when I TCP/IP into the database as a guest the performance when it comes to sorting records is extremely slow. There are over 8000 records, and doing a sort of say 6000 will take about 20 minutes. You can watch it count down by 4 records every couple of seconds. Now the machines are on a Gigbit network and the NIC cards are set to 100 Full. Any ideas or reasons why this database would be crawling like that? Thanks! Ron

Hello everyone, last year I set up filemaker instant web publishing in plain old Pro 7. I was pleased with everything except for the fact that it would only display 5 records at a time (my main layout was a list view). I want web users to be able to see ALL records in their found set, not just 5 at a time. I've read through a lot of documentation on Server 7 and Server Advanced, and have not yet found a definate answer to this question. Can I still use IWP and display more than 5 records at a time through either of the forementioned programs? Do I need to use Custom Web Publishing making use of the xml/xslt functionality? I'm willing to spend the time to learn whatever I …

Hi Guys, Wonder if anyone can guide me here. Im a very experienced FM developer, and over the last couple of years have developed a very complete private medical insurance calculator for a customer of mine. Without going into too much detail it basically calculates medical insurance costs for 15 different companies and allows you to compare the costs. On a 100Mbp network it takes around 25-30 seconds to do a full calculation. These arnt very complicated, basically lots of lookups that create around 200 extra records per customer running the quote. Now the problem is, over a VPN (broadband 512kb download 256k upload) this quote takes over 10 minutes, which is a d…

I am having a serious problem with a FileMaker solution I have created. The database is hosted on FMP Server 7 on a Windows 2000 Server machine. It is accessed by a mix of Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP clients. The particular issue I'm having is with two tables. Table 1 has a primary key (pk) and has a one to many relationship with Table 2. Table 2 has records which are selected and related to records in Table 1 by populating the foreign key field (fk) with the serial number in Table 1's pk field. The problem is that I am increasingly experiencing issues where records in Table 2 are showing up in a portal as being related to Table 1, and the "go to re…

Trying to create a second backup schedule, and am getting stung here: This path is valid: filemac:/IS_Server_HD1/Users/administrator/Documents/ But this path is not: filemac:/IS_Server_HD1/Users/administrator/Documents/FMS7_Backup2 I assumed permissions (Documents is admin admin, rwx------), but setting same as Documents folder, or changing group to fmsadmin rw- makes no difference. Any advice? (my advice for filemaker, please include a bloody file browser next time, so we don't have to mess with your filemac: path formats!) Thanks for your help. Justin

I'm just setting up a FM7 server and have several image database that I have been hosting with FM 6 Unlimited. The databases were set up with referenced links to the images that were stored in a subfolder with relation to the database. When converted to 7 the images would only show up when opened directly connected to the machine, not when remote accessed or via IWP. Looking at the paths stored in the container, it showed both a relative path and a absolute path which was wrong because I had moved the files to a new machine. I removed the absolute path and pasted back just the relative one. This fixed the problem of the images showing up when opened via remote but n…

I've published a database over the internet using Developer 7 - pretty easy. I also know that Server Advanced can do the same and a whole lot more. I just can't shell out $2500 for testing if I don't need it. Now the middle part. Can Server 7 publish the same way over the Internet as Developer can? I could change the port on Developer - but didn't see a clear way of publishing or port changing with Server. The 5 concurrent connections of Developer are about what we need and does work, but as I understand the license you can only use it for development/testing and not for production. If we stayed with Developer 7 for publishing, are there any draw backs of not us…

We're using FileMaker Server 5.5. I have a relational filemaker 6.0 file running on a windows xp computer. The problem is when I log in to the same file to share it on a remote xp (or max os X) computer. I am trying to determine whether I can support all of our companies needs with FM7 (server) instead of using Microsoft exchange, meeting maker or the like. So any input is appreciated. We need to track several things including, events, inventory, groups, members, assets, resources, provide room scheduling etc. We do not need Microsoft exchanges email capabilities as we are hosted externally and meeting maker is web only. I do not want to have several apps for folks to track all of this. i know many of these items are easily accomplished in FMP, but the calendar aspect escapes me. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I know this is a very basic question, but here is the problem. I created a FileMaker relational database on my local hard drive which contains scripts. I then copied all of the files to a shared network folder. Another co-worker tried to open the database on the network using FILE, OPEN. They were able to open the database, however when they click on a button, which runs a script that opens a related file, a message is displayed stating that changes cannot be made because the file cannot be modified. So, I changed the sharing property for all files involved in this database so it can be accessed by all users. However when they try to open the database they still rec…

Hi All, I'm looking into adding a -script argument to one of my web request which is a -find. What I would like is if the -find returns no record I'd like for the -script that i call to actually create the record that was initial looked for. Currently when I do a -script with a -find that doesn't return any records, i still get the no records found error in the XML returned. Is there a way to create the record in the script that is called then return the newly created record as the found result? Thanks.

As there's no way to run both Server 5.5 and 7 on the same machine to test the new solution I run server 7 on another pc in our office. The question is - is there any potential of conflict while running server 7 and server 5.5 as all computers share the same network? As far as I understand, there shouldn't. To be on the safe side should I stop server5.5 manually before testing on 7 (which means doing this on evenings, weekends...when no one's working in the current database...)? One of our customers is having quite large FMS/FMP6 client/server solution (sales mgmt & control). There are approx. 40-60 simultaneous users online every day from 4-6 different locations. It is very strange but since I Updated my FMServer running in a G5 to the new version v7.03, portals behaviour has changed. Now, when some client clicks out the portal after scrolling it down, the portal scrolls up again to the first row. This is really frustating!! The same file running in a HPProliant w2003 with FMServer v7.02 keeps as always. If the layout has unchecked the "show field frames..." option from layout setup menu, the portal stays in the last row you were in, until you refresh the window. Is anybody also experiencing this annoying behaviour??? Or it is just me. Will somebody find out how to workaround this?

Hi everyone. One dumb question. Running Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Filemaker 7 Advanced Server. FM Docs recommend using a static IP address for your server. My hardware firewall assigns DHCP. I reserved an IP for my server in the firewall. I assigned that number to my properties in my network setup on the server. My external IP address is 68.166.225.202. The internal ip address is 192.168.0.7, which is the number that is in my network properties of the computer. For some reason I cannot connect to FM Server Advanced outside of my office network. Is the problem related to Microsoft IIS, FM Server Advanced Web Publishing Engine, or becaus…

I've installed FileMaker Server 7v3 and FileMaker Pro 7v3 on seperate dedicated machines. When I start FileMaker Pro and go to open -> remote, nothing is displayed in the Local Servers list. Both machines are installed on the same subnet, so no routers or what-so-ever are causing problems here. Very strange, as I've talked to another FileMaker person and he said to me that this happened in his environment too, but there it displays the FileMaker Server from time to time. Hello everyone... We have here a server running with Mac OS X, on which FileMaker Server Advanced 7 is installed. FMP inc. claims that using one machine for the web publishing engine and the other for the 7 Server will provide the best improvement in performance. Has anyone tried this with any sukcess? It would be nice to know before I spend another 3 grand and a few days modifying the system.

We are using FileMaker Server 7 to serve a database. FileMaker Pro 7 clients are connecting to the database using an account that uses the default [Data Entry Only] privilege set. Clients have enabled "Save layout changes automatically (do not ask) in Preferences > Layout. When clients navigate manually between View as Form, View as List, and View as Table in Browse mode, they are presented with a "Do you wish to save this change with the layout? (Yes/No)" dialog--even when no changes have been made to data (let alone the layout). When clients with default [Data Entry Only] privilege set use a script whose only step is View As [Cycle] to navigate between View…

Our FM7 Server runs our point of sale (POS) system (very important for our business). The FMServer is at our main corporate site with 3 FileMaker 7.0v3 clients connecting from our LAN and we have one FM 7.0v3 user accessing the FM server from off site through our server's pretty slow upload bandwidth. All machines are running Mac OS X v10.3 (client). We are finding that our FileMaker server is crashing at least every few days, sometimes more frequently. More specifically, the fmserverd process dies. The computer/OS keeps running just fine. We have tried a bunch of stuff so far: 1) exported all data and reimported into a brand new database 2) clean …

I guess I've got a pretty easy question: I've set up a filemaker 7 server and installed filemaker 7 pro on a citrix server. Now, I would like to publish several database files, so users just have to click the published content to access their fm7 database. I've already tried with the following program path "C:Program FilesFileMakerFileMaker Pro 7FileMaker Pro.exe" fmnet:// but this didn't do the trick. Actually, the question is: is there a way to open a remote file on a filemaker server via the run command or command prompt (so without opening filemaker pro first -> open -> remote -> and then select preferrable file)? thanks in advance for any help, Joe…

Hi, We have a FMServer 5.5 running on the same computer as the Windows 2003 server. The databases are accessed by 4 people within the office and need to have it accessible for remote users (5 users in Latin America). This is a non profit organization so our budget is very limited. The question is: do we need to set up a VPN, or there is a way for the remote users to open the databases via "open remote" by typing the IP address of the FMServer? (the office has a DSL connection and the remote users too) Thanks very much in advance!

We had a major crash this afternoon on our Server: Version 5.5, Windows 2003. We have had problems on and off all year. This is our second major crash. The first one took down one file. This one took down our entire Server. I would cut&paste a copy of the actual screen dump, but I'm not sure if the admins would like that. The info goes like this: Event ID: 1000 Source: Application Error Category: (100) Text: Faulting Application Server fmserver.exe, version 5.5.0.1, faulting mode fmserver.exe, version 5.5.0.1, fault address 0x000014f2. ... I found nothing on the FileMaker Website (suprise). The one thing I did find talked about…

I thought I remember seeing somewhere how to do this, but here's the deal. I have 15 files in a database, hundreds of fields and scripts, a lot that over time have become obsolete, etc. Is there any way to get some type of report outlining what is in use and what isn't in use? I thought I remember seeing something like this a while back, but I could be mistaken. Thanks.

I'm looking for a solution to run a script via FMP Server Advanced. Scenario: From the web a user accesses a site using fx.php and connected to FMP DB via FMP 7 SA. Data can be sent and received fine, however, data needs to be exported from FMP into a batch file and run against another system. In FMP 6 Unlimited this was no problem because a FMP client was actually running behind the web. I know FMP 7 SA cannot directly export a file, but has anyone come up with a solution that would trigger a script on a FMP client running with FMP 7 SA? Plain terms a user submits data to FMP 7 SA and that data is entered into the DB, then a script is triggered on a remote FM…

This is a repeat of a post I placed at the FM6 Pro forum. I want to have about 10 people use FM Pro 6. We chose FMP6 rather than FMP7 since many of our users are still running Win98. Is FM Pro Server 7 capable of hosting FM Pro6 users? If not I'm going to need to purchase a copy of FM Pro 6 Server. I would appreciate some guidance if possible. I don't like purchasing expensive outdated software unless there's literally no choice.... Is Filemaker permitting FM Pro 7 Sever to be downgraded to FM Pro 6 Server the way they do with the client software?

I have set up remote administration for FMS and installed the SAT on my XP laptop. I can log in, do my thing, get out- everything is fine. Until I try to log back in. The password resets itself to blank. I actually didn't figure this out the first time and I had to reinstall Server 7 (Adv). Now, in desperation because I couldn't remotely access my Server, I tried logging in without a pw. I got in. I reset the pw, logged out, logged in, logged out, logged in- pw reset itself again. I did this numerous times because I am incredulous that this could happen. It must be an id10t error. Any suggestions? Server et al. installed on one Windows 2000 machine off-site.

I've been tasked with updating an acquired FM database application that is currently running in Filemaker Server 5.5 on a Windows 2K server. In the application when someone clicks on a button, I want to execute a Perl script and then have the results of the Perl script written to a field. When the application is running, will the reference to the external script know to look for this external script on the server? Or will any external scripts executed from a Filemaker Server application need to be installed on the client workstation? I know I could test this myself. However, I don't have access to the production server. There is no development server (to my…

I have two issues with FM7 (Mac OS X). 1. I am testing FM 7 Server on a separate Mac from FM 6 Unlimited. When I access FM 7 from another Mac (after closing FM 6 on the machine I am accessing it from) FM 6 Unlimited will freeze up and I have to force quit on the machine that is severing FM 6 Unlimited. Summary: FM 6 Unlimited on Mac 1, FM 7 Server on Mac 2, Opening FM 7 on Mac 3. The other issue is when I open Define/Define Fields on the Mac #3 it takes a very long time for it to open. When I close Define Fields and open it again, it opens right away. Is there something in the fields that is causing this initial slow response? Thanks in advance for your hel…

Hello Almost all 'big' database servers (MS SQL, Postgress) include a mechanism of 'transactions'. It means that all operations between the start and the end of the transaction are done succesfully or in case of any error all of them are canceled and also all affected records are restored to the previous state. Are there any plug-ins bringing such a feature to FM Server 7 available? Thanks for any suggestions.

Sometimes the FileMaker Pro 3.0 runs in the back and seems sharing the files with FileMaker Server. It brings up the CPU usages to 70-80%. It really slows down the application. Any idea? thanks, Jackson

I'm hosting 20 dynamic websites width about 20.000 pageviews a day. Since my old Windows Server was to slow I installed a brand new XSERVE width FM7SA. I had to change some parameters, but everything works just fine. I use FX.PHP and PHP5 for my websites. Except: Sometimes the link between the datasource and Apache breaks. This without any reason. Apache & Filemaker Server don't stop working, it's just the dynamic generated part of my websites that stops. The only option I have is to completely reboot the server. Very nasty, because now I have to check the site every minute. I just don't trust the system anymore. And every night I do a complete reboot, to be sure…

Hello! This is silly - probably pilot error. Could not get FMPro 7 Server installation to work - first because Firewall was turned on. Now it's off and I can access databases from other computers. Great. next step is/was to get Web Access going. Installed WebPublishing, and the config web site can communicate with the Server. Or so it says. Problem is, in the FMP 7 Server Admin Program / Clients / Filemaker WebPublishing engines, when I add the same identifyer and Passcode as for the WebConfig, I get no IP for the Web Admin Console. Consequently, when I try to actually access the DBs via Safari, they are listed for access, but when I try to open them,…

I have a FM7 file that I have successfully published using FMSA 7.03 on a Mac running OS X.3.8. I need to change things in the file, but when I log in remotely, it is not accepting the original user/pw I set up (before webpublishing), and opens with the guest settings/permissions when opened locally. The Os X file privileges are Owner = fmserver (R/W), Group = fmsadmin (R/W). How am I supposed to edit the file, and how do I get around the automatic local guest login, since right now, the file can't be changed?

We currently have a setup of our web publishing installed on one server and the Apache Web Service installed on another server. Is there a way in the web publishing of FileMaker Server Advanced to restrict access to the Apache Web server's IP Address? Or is it a setup in the server operating system. We are currently running OS X Server on both servers. Another question is, how can i prevent someone from making the request of /fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml?-dbnames which list out the names of the databases that are being shared on the web. Thanks.

Now don't you all laugh ... but this just tickled me pink today ... I received a frantic call this morning that our server was down (we aren't using Server yet). Hi all, I'm looking for a few good suggestions. I've recently been put in charge of a small DB supporting faculty and student records. We're running server 5.5 off of an old mac (OS 9) and using FMP6. Unfortunately, we've outgrown our old solution and are looking into upgrading to FM7. We'd like to be able to utilize all the new features that FM server 7a has to offer, especially on the internet based access side. Hi All, My company is soon to upgrade all the Filemaker systems we have to version 7 in one hit. This is about 400 seperate multi-file "systems" and they plan to consolidate them onto much fewer servers. My question is: is it possible to host more than one system on a server, and have multiple logins at the server level for administration? In other words, can the individual system administrators be given access to the server to configure for their own system, but not have priviledges for any of the other systems? I know this can't be done with version 6, but I haven't had access to version 7. Thanks, Sean.

You can connect to a FileMaker server behind a NAT box or firewall using built in SSH features of Mac OS X. This is handy if you run a NAT box or firewall, and have more than one FM Server to connect to. Note: this procedure gives out your admin password on the server to the client, so use only with a trusted user. I use it for my personal development needs only. It also exposes SSH to the outside world, so make sure you are using strong passwords and have all of the latest system updates. Steps: 1. Make sure your server machine has port 22 open and your NAT box forwards port 22 to that machine. See your Airport Base Station (or linksys, etc.) help files …

I'm a little bit of a FM newbie... I've just created a simple, 1-file database to organize our school's career exploration day. This database basically counts the number of people attending each career exploration session (there are many all running at the same time) and generates students' personalised timetables. So I am finally ready to take the plunge to move to FMP7. However we are not yet ready to give up FMP6. How can I serve both 6 and 7 efficiantly together? Our setup is one server, 4 client machines. Connected with a router, Port forwarding is turned on, on the router so we have WAN access to the databases (using FMP, not IWP). So far I have learned that I can't serve 6 and 7 on the same server. So I guess I will get another server for FMP7. But does anyone know how to set up the router so I can connect to both FMP6 and FMP7 files remotely (using FMP6 and FMP7 respectively)? I remember reading a few weeks ago that while Server 7 uses SSL encryption between server and client (using "open remote"), the login/pass for the database is not submitted with SSL. The SSL is only applied to the data after login. This doesn't make any sense to me, but I remember reading some posts with some very upset users who discovered the bug. PROBLEM 1 - LICENSING ISSUES: We host FileMaker Pro databases with FileMaker Server 7 Advanced. For a few months now numerous Macintosh (only) clients will get without notice "The maximum number of users...". We've extensively checked every serial number of every copy of FileMaker on all networks and all are unique. Sometimes the recipients of the message can simply reboot their Mac and get back to work. Others must wait for hours or even a full day for the issue to clear. If we reboot the server the problem clears instantly for everybody. That
