Here's a rookie question. If I use the FM Server do I still have to include a Set to Multi User [on] step in the files and their scripts? Thank you in advance.

Hello All: I have a new box to host an existing filemaker database. Relocated (copied) the database itself to the filemaker server folder on the new box and restarted services. Both PC & Mac can see the server but not the relocated database. Suggestions & ideas are welcome! Thanks!

Good Day: My client has FM Server 5. They have 17 database files only 1 of which is large. There were 4 people in the office accessing the database. They have a new employee, however, if she tries to access the database, they receive the "too many users " error. How can I check to see how many users they are allowed? If they are allowed 5, what might be the problem? More info >> If they all shut down to let the fifth person on, they have trouble getting back in through the Host. I did post this yesterday on the Network Forum but no replies

I installed FileMaker Server 5 on Win 2000 Server SP2 and I can't seem to get anything on the right pane of the server console to work.(ie. Guests, Admin, Database hosting, Task Scheduler) However, FileMaker server is functioning just fine and I can admin thru the command prompt. Can someone shed some light?

v5.5 Server for Mac seems pretty straight forward on using the Disconnect Idle Guests feature. Can anyone tell me how it relates to the _Disconnect from FileMaker Server when idle_ feature/checkbox at the password level for the database? More specifically, must the password level feature be turned on in order for the Server Disconnect Feature to engage? The help info for this topic appears to confuse the word guest and database constantly making it very difficult to understand.

I just installed FM Server 5.5 on a new G4 with OSX Server Version 10.1.2. I haven't ever used FM Server before so I am becoming acquainted today. The only odd thing I have noticed so far is that when I open the Remote Admin files on my iMac with FM 5.0 client and open the "Get Details" window, I get two lines of zeros instead of the file or guest info I was expecting to see. Any ideas? I only have one file hosted right now. I have it open in two places at the moment. Also, I have read a lot of posts about the backup scheduler not working, but my limited testing seems to be going OK. I also read one post that said FM 5.5 should run on OSX and not OS…

Currently we're running 1 Server v3 with 25 clients v4.1. At this moment we're at the decision point of upgrading to FM5.5 Recently the old FM-server3 setup was moved from an old NT4 server to a 4cpu W2000 server. Performance however did not improve. (An earlier test of the old setup on NT4 with only a faster CPU made a lot of difference) I know performance (or rather the lack of it) can be caused by many things. I'm wondering whether others would share some of their experiences with upgrading, especially with regard to performance changes. Some hints on what to avoid or take a good look at would also be appreciated very much.

Hi, Can anyone shed some light on why Filemaker Server 5.5 would be shutting down (as if Stop Server' had been clicked) and deleting folders containing Filemaker files!!! I know it sounds like a virus, faulty files, etc. I (and Filemaker) have tried everything: the latest Norton AV, Disk First Aid, Hardware Test CD, Norton Utilities, replacing files with 3 month old backups, reformatting every disk on network, isolating the network and then reintroducing machines individually, installing only Filemaker clients on every machine, etc., etc., etc.... This has been going on for three months and as helpful as they've been, Filemaker seem unable to commit them…

Dear friends, I run approximately 30 databases on FM Server 5.0, through FM Unlimited onto the web. I was dismayed to discover this morning that all of my databases now have only 50 records in them (as opposed to over 1,000 in some). All databases are protected and backed up every night. Unfortunately, the back up also only has fifty records. Do you have any idea how this could have happened? Any similar experience? Thank you, Rob Mc

I'm also not able to (as a client) view the image folders included in the Filemaker Server folder, so i can't make any changes to the documents, HELP, thanks, christel

Will be looking to get FMP Server to accomodate my desire to work from home and to increase use of FMP vs web within the office. I want to upgrade my server from NT to 2000. If it won't work, and I purchase server 5.5, will I also have to purchase FMP 5.5 for each of my clients or will FMP 5 be able to run off of server 5.5?

Can someone please explain this in plain language? This is from the Filemaker web site: "LDAP Directory Support FileMaker Server 5.5 can register on an LDAP server for easy location by FileMaker Pro 5.5 clients and for tracking from the IT department." Does this mean that we can use, for example, enterprise e-mail systems and log-in information in our FM solutions via LDAP? Thanks.

I need some advice here. I installed FMpro 5.5 on the server and associated terminals of an insurance company. All works well except when the following problem occurs. Some of the terminals when connecting with FMPro on the server, try and take over control and want the server transfered to make their terminal the host. Some do, some do not. Am I missing a setting here somewhere? This is really confusing the entire office when accessing their main data base which is the one I created for them. Thanks in advance... Jason [email protected]

Filemaker Server is a database server application. It is functionally similiar to Oracle or Sybase. You still need Filemaker Pro client applications installed on each workstation in order to access the databases hosted on Filemaker Server. Each copy of Filemaker Server will support up to 125 open databases and up to 250 simultaneous users. If you have more than 125 databases you can simply run more servers in order to host all of the databases. I have 5 Filemaker server running here. It is certified for Win2000. Goto http://www.filemaker.com/it/whitepapers.html for a bunch of white papers and best practices documents. Lots of good information here.

Hi jhon, You should not have your backup program touch open FileMaker files. Use the built in scheduler of FileMaker Server to periodically write file copies to another directory, and then backup those copies. Then, whatever backup system you choose, set it up to avoid touching the FileMaker Server directory. An alternative backup plan that can work is to periodically stop the FileMaker Server service, and while it is stopped (and all files closed), have your backup service run. After that, just start the FileMaker Server service. This plan works fine if a nightly backup is sufficient. Good luck, Andrew

Yes, still troubles! I hope Filemaker Inc. (100% owned by Apple Computer Inc.) will improve ASAP its FMServer5.5 for X I would like for example a "startup at boot" checkbox (just like a lot of other services) But at the moment what I really need is the solution to this problem: start up FMServer at boot without login and control what files it must open. Now I've installed FMServer onto a G4 Dual800 running MacOS X Server 10.1.1 Last weekend I read in different forums the same suggestion: "Create a FMPServer folder into StartupItems and so on..." Taking a look in deep I discovered two different StartupItems folders: the first in /Library, the other in /Sy…

Help please. I know this is an easy question for most of you guys, but as a non-expert with poor contacts I'm struggling to get good advice. We've got a FileMakerPro v5 pupil database for each department at our school. These are stand-alone files on individual departmental PCs. They have quite a few different layouts and are related to other files so that, for example, there are pull-down menus to enable the choosing of comments from other files to paste into reports. This stand-alone approach however has many shortcomings, such as a) only one person being able to access a particular file at one particular machine : not possible to pull together the separate…

I've got two sets of images in a database. One set is small, so it is stored within the db, but the other set of images are quite large (they're a hi-res and lo-res of the same image). I am using OS X and Filemaker 5.5 server. Today I noticed that the server was not sorting properly. By the time I noticed this my database was corrupted. I then recovered it. After restarting machine and restarting Server it wouldnt open database. It acted like it did. Then It corrupted it again. I did this 3 times with same results everytime. Anyone else having this problem? I am using OS X 10.1.2 Can file sharing be on the same machine? I know its not recomended on older OS 9 but with multi-threaded OS X I figured it would be ok. I used it on OS 9 and never noticed a slow down and I used it for 2 years. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong.

Problem - slow indexing on FMP 5 (when indexing millions of rows). Question - Would FMPro Server 5.5 or anything else help? I have a PowerMac G4/733 with 1.5 gigs of RAM, and I have allocated 500 megs of RAM to FileMaker Pro 5. I have a new database where I imported 5.5 million rows. The import only took about an hour and a half. But I then had to create indexes on three columns (fields) out of 30 columns. And, by looking at how slow the index build is taking, it will take ~81 hours to complete. Since I will be updating (and possibly re-creating) this database weekly, I need a faster way to build these indexes. What do I need to do in order to speed up index-bui…

Sorry if this question should not be brought up over here. I downloaded the trial version of Filemaker Server 5, and had it installed on Redhat Linux. But once I run it, it says "This version has expired. Please use a current version." The thing is I just downloaded it several minutes ago before the installation. I've got a db that is saved on a file server. It's rather large - at least *I* would say it is. (You may think otherwise.) Today it has started to tell me that it is opening the file as Read Only. When I drag a copy to my desktop I can open that copy. When I try to replace the server version it tells me that it's in use. It sounds to me as though the server THINKS it's in use and it really isn't. Any ideas on how I can correct it?

Here's the short version of what we're doing here. We are setting up FM Server 5.5 on a dedicated server. The plan is to have a new blank database reside in a seperate folder on our network for each project we start. Each project database will then be filled in gradually with all the project data. Is there some way to avoid the whole "administrator" & "guest" thing that happens when two people try to open the same database file? I was under the impression that Server would 2. Hi, Am working on a solution with FileMaker Server 5.5 on OS X 10.1 where we need to protect our databases so that they can not be copied and used. Since there is no plugin which works on the FileMaker Server, we wrote a C application that checks the ethernet ID on startup of the FMServer deamon and decrypts the files. Conversely, it's also supposed to encrypt the files when FMServer quits. Problem is, the shutdown access works VERY erratically. Sometimes its fine, and sometimes it doesn't encrypt the files on shutting down. OK, let's start at the beginning. 1. Turn file sharing OFF. It will cause you untold problems. 2. Drop the memory back to about 32 MB. All FM Server can use is 40 MB to begin with. 3. Turn OFF Virtual Memory if you have it on. 4. Recover all your files, then export all the data in them. Import that data into clean clones of your files. 5. quote: from Filemaker.com Hosting a FileMaker Pro Database on an NT Server 4.0 with 2 (Multiple) Network Cards When hosting FileMaker Pro databases from an NT Server with 2 or more network cards, FileMaker Pro will only broadcast from one of the network cards. FileMaker Pro was designed to broadcast from the card with ID 0 only. ok, does any one know of anyway to get around this problem? We have tried getting the Nic card we are using onto ID 0 with no luck at all. We called filemaker and they said there is nothing they can do about it. but out of desperation, we have decided to ask if anyone in here has ever been able to somehow, someway get around thi…

Hi, We were using FM Pro Server 5.5 on a G4 450 with OS 9.2. We server up about 70 files for 20 people, and search/entry is fairly heavy between 10:30 am to 3:00pm. Problem is that the server started crashing almost once a day. Shifted the server to OS X and the crashing problem went away, but even the basic opening of the files on client machines is s-l-o-w. Have checked & double-checked the preferences, but see no difference in settings (cache 40MB, 20 users, etc) Has any one else had this experience? Partha

I'm running FM Server 5.5 for 30+ databases on a Win2000 Server. I use Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 to do nightly backups. Since moving from WINNT to Win2K, the backup software reports that the databases are corrupt (which they are not of course). One solution (from Veritas) would be to have FM Server stop serving the databases during the time backups are going on. Since none of the dbs are 24/7 critical, how could I have FM Server stop serving the dbs for an hour while the files are being backed up? Any suggestions? Thanks!

For the ones that are using Filemaker Server 5.5 on MacOS X. I have tried the evaluation version of Fm Server, but I do not see how to get FM Server to host without someone log into the machine first and then it will auto launch. I have seen other databases on MacOS X startup and host files without a person logging into the machine. Does anyone know how to set this up. If FM Server has to ne logged in to host this can be a big security hazard for a machine that is always logged in to host databases over a network. Thanks

Hello together, I have a strange problem: upon my installation of FMServer on Linux (RedHat 7.1, english) I can view the statistics, close+open files, disconnect users etc BUT I don't get the details of user/file from the Remote administration (Win2000 english). By clicking on "Get Details" I only get zero's back. No joke! I only see many 0 in this little upcoming window where one should see -according to the manual- some different things. Also going to a Mac did not help. Any idea? Thanks a lot Daniel

Hi there I have a question. There are twelve people using filemaker here. They all going to feed off one machine that has filemaker open with the database. Would there be a reason (or excuse) for that copy of filemaker to be fm server instead of filemaker 5.5? Thanxs Steve

Help! We have customers who cannot afford to purchase FMP server PLUS all the FMP's for the users so they are using the runtime version of our software which we have created for this purpose. We are locating the solution folder inside a controlled access folder on the NT server for each user. Each user has a password for access into their folder and our software. The supervisor wants to be able to periodically look at all the data in the Master file so I have created a script which imports all the records for the individual users into the supervisor's copy. The supervisor has access privileges to go into the individual user files but they also want a copy of their ow…

I am located in the same subnet with no routers in between my and the FMP server. I am running the operating system windows XP professional. Everything appears to be loading correctly. A wrinkle has however developed. I downloaded an evaluation version of FMP 5.5 and everything work correctly. So now the question is why does it not work with FMP 5.0? Eric

We have been running FileMaker Server 5.5 on a Mac OS 10.1 server for the past month. I ran into a problem with FileMaker Server Config file remembering its preferences, particularly after running a FileMaker 5.5 client locally on the server. FileMaker admitted this was a known problem which they are working on. In the mean time, we editted the preference file to hard code our preferences into the system. I now have another concern about the ability of FileMaker server to clear the cache before shutting down on Mac OS 10.1. I think, and would like to have someone confirm that there are issues. Recently I was making some layout changes while the databases were still …

I have Server 5.5 installed on an OS X 10.0.4 box. Our database consists of 50 files. I have the databases in a folder called "Current Databases" at the root directory of the system, and aliases to these files in the FileMaker Server 5.5 folder. When FMS starts up, all the databases are opened except a file called Users. I can open the file manually (File/Open Database). If I change the file name to, say, "Users File", it works, but that would break a whole bunch of relationships. I've changed the name of the alias that points to the file, and it seems to work. Is the filename Users reserved or restricted in Server 5.5? This exact setup worked flawlessly in Server…

We host 60 databases on FM server. There are about 40 users in one location (in Ireland.) We are now setting up another plant in Livermore, CA. We want the users there to have the same Filemaker access to the same databases. The problem is that Internet access bandwidth is very limited in Livermore. 144k is the limit now. Over this connection, native filemaker reports are too slow. We could use HTML but it is limited to 3 step scripts. We use a lot of sophisticated scripts. We have the VPN, firewalls etc in place. If we could have a mirrored server at each plant with very frequent incremental synchronisation it seems that it might work well. Is FM Serve…

Depending on your set up files do update, but you have no record lock. If all files exist in single computer (server) then yes files do update.

I have been operating for years under the assumption that FMP Server 3.0 can host FMP databases of version 3.0, 4.0 and 4.1 without any problems. My assumption has been that the scripts and calculations were performed on the client machine and that the server just held the files open. I have been asked to troubleshoot a database which I didn't develop. It was written in FMP 4.0. It is used for scheduling equipment check out in a library. The script which checks for conflicts for reservation date and time works under 4.0 and 4.1 - but fails to work when the databases are served by a FMP 3.0 server. Any ideas? Cheers, Marcia

I have a calculation that is date specific I need to take a field, multiply it by a number if applies to Nov 1 or later in a date field, and I need to take the same field and multiply it by a different number if another if the date is prior to Nov 1. What we are attempting is to alter a labour charge if it occurs after November. For example: Labour Cost = "total labour hours" * $50 if the "date created" is less than 11,01,01 or else the "total labour hours" * $55 Any help is definitely appreciated as I am obviously not a programmer.

I had my first crash of an NT 5.0 Dell box today, while FM Server 5 was running. Following reboot, the system was incredibly slow.... Checking with the Performance monitor, FM Server was hogging virtually all the time. How can I fix this? Consistency checks have already been done on all my filemaker files and they check out fine. Do I need to reinstall FM Server 5? Any suggestions?? [ November 06, 2001: Message edited by: DrRick ]

I've successfully installed and am using fmserver 5.5 on a redhat linux box and it seems very fast and stable. However fmserver when started is not automatically opening the databases in the /var/fmserver directory. I've set the correct permissions on the files but it will only launch them when I run the command 'fmserverd open /var/fmserver/*' Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Using NT 4.0 network server, while making a basic change to a shared database file and updating approx. 2000 records, network communication for this file only ceased, now when opening, or trying to open the file I get the following... "Filemaker cannot host a file because of a network error, files marked as multi user will not be available over teh network" The file in question is one of 20+ that are still available, and I can copy/view/manipulate the file in question seperately - any insight would be great, thank you.

Attempting to import data with Import Script step and a calculation field to extract data from an Oracle remote database using FMP v. 5.5 and Filemaker Server v. 5.5. I can get it to work for one user accessing the host file, but then it gives an error message when attepting the same import at another user's computer. Anyone else have any experience importing from Oracle db using such a client server 5.5 setup? (We don't allow duplicate posts. This thread is closed, please answer in "Importing & Exporting". -bd) [ November 03, 2001: Message edited by: LiveOak ]

Our network administrator recently dedicated a machine to be our server. He loaded on FileMaker Server and we now have 9 machines that can get to it. The only problem is that when I try to do any administrative actions (which I am responsible for), I cannot get to the files. When I double-click on the server from the Hosts window and the database windows appear, I select "OPEN FILE" and the Open Database window is empty, so therefore I cannot configure the access/permissions for a file. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi, We have FileMaker 5.0 server running on new Mac OS X server (G4 with dual processors, 512 RAM). It runs on Mac classic version 9.1 The application consists of 12 related files. Main table is large, about 85 MB, has over 800 fields, 170 layouts, a lot of buttons, etc. Most related files are quite small, up to 100 K each. For all files Local Data Access Companion and Remoute Data Access Companion are enabled. MAC server is on a network (TCP/IP connection). All users(6 right now) run FileMaker Pro 5.0 client and internally we access FM application via HOSTS button, by opening the main table on the server. Internally it is quite fast, it takes a few seconds to op…

A couple of questions I have before I purchase FMPro 5.5 Server: 1) Does the Server package come with installs for individual Mac users on the network? Or will I have to purchase software packages for every user accessing the server? 2) I have two users running Windows 95. Will the Server package have an install for them? Or will I have to purchase two FMPro PC versions?

Not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but I don't really know if the solution requires scripts, relationships or what... I've got about 12 Databases, some are related, and some aren't. They're all served via Server 5.5. What do I need to do to set up a "Opener" database that when opened on a FMP 5 Client machine will launch all of the databases on that client? I noticed that if I open one of my related DB's it will open all others that it has relationships with, but it seemed somewhat excessive to build another DB with relationships to all of them, for the sole purpose of opening them. Anyone know of another/better way? Or is this an acceptable so…
