I am trying to get my php script to automatically write the username and password of ppl who log in to the website into a filemaker pro database. So far I have managed to get the script to write to a text file as comma seperated file, but then I have to import the data manually. Has anyone done anything similar to this?

Hi, I try the database Pop3it to receive e-mail by File Maker. It work perfectly. But I want to share this database on the web to create a forum where people send e-mail and can see automaticly her message on the web site. But after I have create a page to call the information in the database with CDML it's not work. When I go to see my page they say to me that the database was not open! It's not true and my database was connect with the plug-in Web Companion to share information on the web. So, if my others databse work perfectly on the web, why this one cannot work? It's possible that it was only a stupid little detail but if someone can help me... Thank!

Importing records from text file to FMP. All is well -EXCEPT - imported date is in different format than existing FM dates. Consequently, sorting records now gives two sets of properly ordered (within each set) results.

Hello I maintain a list of journals, which are managed by FMPro41 and Web Companion. A part of the list is created by importing an Excel-file provided by a database host. This list contains a lot of journals. For certain reasons I would like to be able to: a) import match, and replace information in a record that in a certain field is identical whereas other fields may differ. But not change information in some of the fields. Every journal is supposed to have a unique identifier called ISSN (International Standard Serial Number). get an X in a check-box, or something else when a match isn't found. Just so that I may search and find those that were imported whithout re…

I have a address solution that we are going to send to our customers. They will type in there name and address of their customers that they want books mailed to, and then export that data and send it to us. Up until today I thought we would import it back into a FM Database and print labels. They now want to be able to import this to our AS/400 and it only likes fixed length (so I'm told). Is there any way that I can export from FileMaker as fixed length or is there a conversion program that I can run after the data is sent to me to convert it from tab seperated to fixed length. Thanks, Brian

I am building a tape database for an Audio/Video client and they would like a button that would allow them to attach a word or excel file to a database. They have extensive cut lists and write-ups on these videos and they need to have access to this information. If possible I would like to make this something that is imported into FM and not have to access the third party application. Cn FM import basically text files such as Word or text formated Excel. This is my problem...If someone has a better solution please let me know. I am not married to any particular solution.

Hi, I'm fairly new to FMP so please bear with me. We have a database that has a large amount of records linked to it. We would like to be able to export info from specific records to text. When I try exporting it now, it exports the field information for all the records. Can I have it do the fields of my choice and do only 1 record? Also, is it possible to export the field name as well as the data within the field? Thanks in advance. - Greg

I recently tried to import some data into a DATE field of my existing records, but I must have selected the wrong field to import the data, resulting in the data replacing the LASTNAME fields of my existing records. Is there a way to recover the replaced data, short of going back to my month-old backup copy and re-entering the new records? Thanks.

Grr! I have a unique identifier in my database (I defined it as unique by: 'define fields, options, validation, select unique tick box). It works fine for data entry (i.e. say's I'm not allowed to duplicate id's in that field). But when I'm importing data, it'll allow my 'unique' field to have duplicate's in! Aargh! It took me hours yesterday to make sure that the right person had been allocated to the right company, as around 14 company's shared 'unique' id's!! Consequently, I have no faith that the right people are married up to the correct organisation. Does anyone know how to make the unique field option really work?! thanks A very frustrated Sam!

I have a database of 3700 rows, 17 columns. It is exported to an html table then uploaded to my website. I've fiddled with all the html tags and no matter what size I make the table, I have no control over the size of each column.....some columns come out 1" wide, and another is 3" wide.... is there something I am supposed to be doing prior to exporting? Does the way I have the layout set up matter? Also, with a table this size, it takes (at 46667 bps) 6 minutes for it to open up on my webpage using Netscape. There just HAS to be a way to speed this up! HELP! Jane p.s. you can see my 2-part table online at: http://www.geocities.com/cheezz51/DART_mbd1.html …

Is it possible to Import a specific record from another FM file, instead of "all records"? I have 10 developers that will have their own FM database where they create records. When they create a record, they will let me know when it is finished and then I import it to my "master database". The only problem is, it imports all their records. I only want a particular one (i.e. #2 in their list), not ones that they did (and I imported) previously.

Is there a way to find all records in a source file when importing other than using a script in the source file? Problem - I need to make sure all records in a source file are available when importing into a destination file. I could put a script in all the source files to show all records and run as an external script but if this is not necessary it would save a lot of trouble.

Greetings, I really need your help here. I know almost nothing of Filemaker. I want to achieve very specific results that will probably require scripting, etc. What I want to do is find a way to export each record individually. My records contain several fields, and an ID field, with a calculation that inserts the record number in the field. Therefore, the first record's ID field always contains "1". That's exactly what I want: if I sort the records, then any record which ends up being first gets an ID of "1". I thought of creating a Global field, with an initial value of 1; a script would perform a loop, inside of which there would be a Find(), looking for a re…

I just started working for my college library, and they are using FMPro for a couple of their databases. The databases are used by students as well as staff. I'd like to make it so that students don't have to login as a guest every time they come to the main page of the server to do a search, but give staff the option as logging in so that they can add/change/ect the entries. Any ideas? I was thinking something along the lines of a page for students that automically logs them in when they access the database, but I have no idea whether that is possible or how to do it. Thanks, Ralph Douglass Oberlin College Oh crud, this is on the wrong topic. Sorry. I'll see …

I being a computer moron am hoping for a bit of assistance. We use FileMaker PRO 4.0 for our mailing list. The layout and list was set up by someone who is no longer here. All I had to do to export the list on to a disk for our mailing services was press a button that was created within the main screen. The person at the mail room said it used to save as an ASKE/ASKI? file. I tried to export as a *DBF which he thought would work for them. However when I exported the records they would …

Hello, I am starting from scratch with import/export. I have a runtime solution that has ten related files that handle customer/contact, parts and invoices (mainly). The invoices are pretty complicated and since it seems you can't imp/exp related files, I can't imagine how I could import(or export) all the different files and have them come together in a new file system. I'm trying to see what would be feasible since Developer 5 sez we need to be able to have users update files when we distribute updated version. So, my first question is when is import and when export the best way to go. Second, in a complex solution is it better to simply update customers and vendo…

I have been working on my major project for IT which consists of a relational database. In order to achieve an outcome that I have defined I would like to find the most automated way i.e. scripting/macros to get data fields from either filemaker 4 or 5.5 and then export to an excel template which may be either 97 or 2000. I need a script that first finds certain records depending on the criteria asked for when the script is run, sorts them and then exports them. What I would really like is a method for excel to be launched and the template opened with the data imported into the correct area after the data has been exported out of filemaker. The reason I ask for assistan…

Situation: Estimator file has a script to import and update an old record that is previously found in an Old Records file (file is open), then updates for new pricing. On a stand alone or host machine it runs flawlessly. Problem: If I am on the guest machine the Old Records file closes following the import script. Then I have to reopen to use that file again. This same issue is duplicated by others running the same files in other locations (no same company or network). Question: Does this sound like a scripting error, or is this common to FMP5? I can't find anything in the scripting to cause this, but I certainly may be missing something.

I need to capture time code information into a FM database running on a Macintosh. The data would be available via a serial cable connected to a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) deck. The idea would be to capture the starting and ending time code for each take during a recording session. Even not enthusiastic, I have to convert my FMP5 files from my iMac DV500 to a new Dell 4100 PC running Windows 2000, due to work demands. Two of my files have come up as a mess on the PC, while working properly on the Mac. They are both relational files, the first to a contact base, and the other to a salary calculation base. On the PC both files only show one field, and the content of this field is unrecongnizable. What is going on? Why do not these files behave like all the others I have converted to run on Windows 2000. So far the others seem to b…

Hi, I have a client dbase with a unique code based on name DOB. It is distributed in a runtime version and requires users to enter a forward contact date to manage client contact (a follow up date) From time to time the entire dbase of the user is refreshed and if I could simply dump all the data in the fields and do a fresh import it would be really easy, BUT I want to keep their follow up as they have entered it. (Maybe that's easy too, but I'm having trouble). I have tried exporting the fields used for the unique ID as well as the follow up date field to a temp dbase and once the refresh is done import the follow up date from the temp dbase back into the main. I have a system where hundreds of little text files need to be imported all the time. I don't want to make my users specify a filename each time... I'd rather ask them to specify how many files they have today, and have the script do all the importing. Is there any way to force the import script step to use the value of a field as the filename? FYI, the files are named like this: pic0.csv, pic1.csv, pic2.csv, etc. So I could have a loop which runs a specified number of times, and a calculation field to determine the current filename. If I could get the import script step to use this field as the filename, this would be a lot easier! Jack

Hi everybody, I'm in the process of "converting" an Access database into FileMaker. I suspect the Access designer was a newbie to database design; he's got three different tables that store pretty much the same information (first & last names, phone, etc.), but the field names are different in each table. For each table that I'd be importing from I created an import script an…

When entering data in a field defined as "text" I have the need to prohibit a possible "carriage return" because it is causing problems with an export of data that must be performed later. The hidden character caused by the "carriage return" is actually not the standard return (represented in ascii by decimal value 13) but is what I believe would be called a soft return. My question is simply, how can I can this character be eliminated at the time of data entry? I would very much appreciate a response from anyone. THANK YOU.

Hi I need to be able to export records on multiple lines. For example, I want to create a Unix shell script which requires multiple lines: /web1/fred -pr <<EOD xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx EOD The field in the database is the row of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, but it needs the command above and the terminator (EOD) below to work. As far as I can see, exporting can only create one line per record. (I did try explicitly inserting newline characters in the record, but it did not work properly.) So, I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to do this. Thanks David

Okay, I want to take a static database that I have and put it on the web. I've got 26 records (A-Z) I want each record to be a separate web page, with a next and forward button (at the top and bottom) (and possibly an A-Z map in the header. Ideally, it would use the layout that I currently have as a model. Is there an easy way to do this? I don't want the users to be able to change the found set or anything like that. I just want to manage the website data using filemaker pro, then export it to the web. If anything changes, I'd export the whole thing again. Any ideas on how to do this?

It wants to import all the records instead. The only way to import only the found set is to be sure that Database A is closed first so that Database B can open it as the host. What is going on here? What am I missing. Other sets of files seem to work fine for this. Thanks for any help. Mike

The task is to connect an Access database in a *remote computer* and import records to Filemaker file . I have DNS address like (something.qqq.edu) and IP address of the computer with username and password. I have tried Mac with Filemaker 5 and no success. My File DSN configuration always crash ODBC control panel. With PC Filemaker 5, I cannot connect the Access database and import . However, if I did ftp xxx.mdb file to my computer I can (seems to be) import. But I did it with Access driver in PC ODBC control panel Although 148kb Access file came up em…

I have two databases. One is membership information to a club. One is for the very same members but info regarding a purchase they all made. This should be in one database and we want to report that way and continue that way in the future. They have the membership number in common. Instead of recreating database2's field definitions in database1, importing db2's records and then doing a data cleanup, is there a way I can combine them? Thanks so much!

I need to find if files can be shared between Filemaker pro and MS Project. Filemaker currently has the Database info on it, but I need to start running schedules and projects using MS Project. Ihave had this hint below, but don't know much about the two Applications...can anybody help? TIP I RECEIVED. Should be - Does MS Project export tab delimited data? Cuz if it does then you just need to have Filemaker look at the file MS Project exports to. Maybe you have to write a little script and/or set up the correct relationship in Filemaker but it should be do-able. QUESTION I ASKED... Is it possible to link MS Project and Filemaker Pro. If I created a schedule in M…

I've had trouble importing jpegs into a container. I'm using an iMac & system 9.04. Upon importing I get "Error -2804 occurred during initialization of Claris XTND system". Can someone illuminate me as to what's going on here? Is this a FMP problem? OS 9 problem? Appleworks related? Any help would be eally appreciated. Thanks a bunch. Paul

Hi all! I am a new member of the FM Forum. I am wondering if anyone out there knows a way to name an export file using a field value. What I am trying to do is keep a directory of exports where the filenames are customized base on the date and/or time the export takes place. I can't find any way to export data to a comma or tab delimited file in a script where the export filename is different everytime the script is run without requiring the user to manually enter the filename. Any help would be appreciated. I am willing to deal with Plug-ins as well.

I am refining my field names and as such, have to remap the old data when I import an archive. It is driving me crazy trying to match up the old with the new as the fields zip from the top to the bottom of that tiny little window when I attempt to drag it to it's new position. Is there any way to slow the drag down or to expand the window to a decent size?

I am currently setting up a real estate database for local real estate agencies. The database will contain property listings with photos. I have set up an admin section for them to add their listings, but I'm not sure how to set up the web page to allow them to upload photos to FMP. I am currently using FMP 4 and will be upgrading to 5.5 in the near future. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to automate file export? We have an HR system built in FMP 3 (yes, it's very old!) that contains information that could be used by other applications. If something like cron for Mac could be used to initiate an export script so that the user doesn't need to go into FMP and run the export, it would be helpful.

I am using FM5 and want to export a data from repeating fields into Excel to create a simple timesheet report. The excel report will use data from other sources as well. I export the data as "tab-separated text" into Simple Text and then open the simple text file in excel. The data exports, but since I am exporting data from repeating fields, all the data for each repeating field is exported into one cell per repeating field. How can I correct this and is there a better way to do it? Thanks in advance to anyone who can assist!

I was wondering if anyone had a simple solution (within Filemaker) rather than using Excel to bring in a text file that is delimited by the data pipe (|) character. I'm using a CGI to process form data (MformsPro) on my website, with frequent imports of new data. Mforms produces text files this way, and currently I'm finding and replacing the pipe in BBEdit, or using Excel to do this. I'd like to eliminate the extra step if possible. Thanks!

I have an ASCII list file which I am trying to import into FMP. The problem is that the list is not 1 record per line, but any record may be comprised from up to 7 lines in the list. The only way you know when you come to another record is if a line begins with "10". 2 records are given as an example: 1034127 01.12.199100.00.00003 T8 3 SN 2001.11.200001235.3000926.5001182.80 4001.11.19940029 17729 5001.12.1991Arterio-venous fistula of the abdomen, 5001.12.1991dissection and repair of, with restoration of 5001.12.1991continuity 5001.12.1991(Assist.) 1034130 01.12.199100.00.00003 T8 3 SN 2001.11.200000386.4500289.8500333.95 …

I've created a file which has a container field in which a picture is stored. I need to export the record but I'm unable to export the container field. I do not want to export the picture itself but the path to the picture so that the other application which has to import the data can recreate the link to the picture. Is there anyway to do this? Since it's possible to insert a picture by "storing only a reference to the file", it means that the path to the file is kept somewhere? Can it be retreived?

I'm a newbie with FM, trying out the demo pursuant to purchase. Question is, once you've crafted a set of import mappings to use for importing data from another kind of database into FM, can those mappings be saved so they don't have to be recreated from scratch next time you want to repeat the import? If so, how? -- we can't find relevant instructions anywhere. Tnx -- Jim

I have been pouring over books and the help section of filemake pro but I haven't been able to figure out how to best import a simpletext document into filemaker pro and save time. Simpletext doesn't have any documenting structure. I know it'a text file and I have tried a few different options. 1)I imported the simple text document into word. Then I replaced all ( : and (=) in the document with (,) to give it some kind of structure to be imported into filemaker fields. Then I imported them into excel so that they would have defined rows and columns. This whole procedure is very time consuming! When I finally import the records into filemaker, I can only import one to two …

First of all, I have to give the credit to a fellow forum member, amccallum who came up with this particular solution. This idea is helpful to those that would like to import information from documents without any kind of real formatting.(Example: Simpletext and Notepad). First create a parsing database. Just open up a new database and create a text field that the info from the document that you want parsed into a database will be pasted into. Copy the document and paste it into the text box of the parsing database. Once you have descided what info you want from that document into a formal database, create calculation fields that will contain the desired data. Us…

Hello, I have a FM Pro 5 database of song lyrics, with about 9400 songs in the database so far. However, when I tried to add another record recently, an error message appeared and said the database had reached "text block limits". So, I was unable to add anymore lyrics. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks in advance.

When I backup fp5 files to a CD-R, Filemaker treats the files as read-only and won't allow password entry. This makes them usless as backups if I need to replace the original files. The problem does not occur when backing up to and from floppys. I think I have tried all the ways there are, but can not find the correct one. A message always come up saying they are write-protected. Is this a regular problem? Rex

We created a FM database for the purposes of converting Exchange/outlook and Quickmail users over to FirstClass - specifically converting their address books. The database generates seemingly perfect syntax and even generates perfect looking entries in the FirstClass Address Book. However, when you try to use an address created by the Filemaker DB, the address does not function, ie We get an error claiming that there is no match in the directory. Yet when you manually type out the same command and process it, the address works as expected. Is there something unusual about the way Filemaker generates quotation marks quotes or some hidden ASCII characters ? Any help is…
