some of my clients want to be able to clink a link on the desktop that directly connects them to the remote file, like the "Open Remote" command in the FM menu. can someone tell me how to do that...? does filemaker accept command line or something?? i can't find any reference in the manual... thanks :-p

Hi- New here and to FM7. My site works fine on my PC but when it's on the web it doesn't function the same. Specifically my tab buttons through fields. MY local site works fine but online the tab button sends you all over the place within the form. Any ideas? Thanks!!!!

As a first post, let me start by introducing myself. My name is Nick, and I currently work at a drag strip (motorsports facility), as a racetrack announcer, and am looking to make a simple program to solve my problem. The computer we use displays us racer information when the racer comes to the starting line, and though the information is readily available, it is not displayed for anything but elimination runs. I have a network of multiple users with a database using lots of esoteric words. Spelling is important and Fm has to learn all the terminology for spelling to go smoothly. Does every copy of FM on every client have to learn all the terms or can the Host computer host the dictionary? The latter would speed up the learning process for FM and accelerate data entry for the users.

I've had to reinstall the application 4 times. The symptons are; after double clicking I get the splash screen and then it quits. This happens twice, on the third try I get the splash screen with a line of garbage that looks like it might be filling in the serial number, it quits and then I get a message that a virus or something else has corrupted FMP, determine the error and reinstall. Then sometimes when I start the application, it works. I can't determine how or why this is happening...help!

Field1 is a number field that could contain one of several values. Field2 is the auto-entry field by calculation using the "case" function. If a user enters a wrong value in field1 and exits the field but then goes back to change the value, field2 retains the original auto-entered value. I have tried including a value in the "case" statement to blank out field2 if field1 is empty. I have tried using an "If" statement before and after the "case" statement. No luck. Is there a way to get the auto-entry field(2) to change if the user re-enters the field1 to enter a different value?

Hello all! Filemaker has announced that they close the upgrade in September and that they stop selling FM6 at the same time. What is that really meaning? If you have a application which cant be upgraded because Filemaker doesnt let the Changeprinter upgrade plugin how could your client get the needed software, in my case FM5? Is it free to distribute the older versions as a copy of yours? -Per

I've been printing from Classic due to the EPS/PDF low-res printing problem in FMP 5.5 and 6 on OS X. I just got my copy of FMP 7 (which I understood would fix the problem), and imported PDFs (put on the layout behind text fields) still look horrible. Am I missing something? thanks, Don

when customizing business tracker from the publishing business to a wholesale painting business, i am having trouble with the catalog. the catalog script refers to a "category" field that i no longer used. i've tried to change the field to "size" of the paintings, but the script still doesn't pull up the records. can anyone help me with the script? or tell me what i need to do as far as defining fields or changing certain of the layouts that the script refers to to make it work?

Hi there, just want to ask is that any to hide the status bar on the bottom site by using a script. Because sometime i need to hide it manually on a seperate pc. And the other thing is can i disable the minimize button on all the FM files. After compile, the close button will disable, but minimize abutton still function. Sometime user will click this button and see all the files behind, then they will not know where they are. So, hope this two have solution to solve it. Thank you. Regards, Henry

Hey whats up guys? I am looking to upgrade from filemaker 5 to filemaker 7 and might go with the advanced server version. i like the features of the xml and want to integrate it with a web site's shopping cart and make my own order status thing. I am just starting to convert a FM6 file to FM7, but have been horribly disapointed by the speed at which FM7 runs. Switching layouts, creating calculations, and even basic functions like replace and set field take a VERY long time. I have downloaded the latest version of FM7 and am running a 1Ghz G4 powerbook with OS10.3. I am afraid of upgrading for fear that no one will use the system if it is too slow. How are people dealing with this and are the folks at Filemaker doing anything to improve this? Thanks David

I am very new to FileMaker Pro 7 (started using it yesterday). I have two popup lists in my layout one for States and one for Routes(I have two seperate tables, one for states & stateID and another for route, routeId & stateid). All, I have a FM6 solution that was recenty converted to FM7. It's around 55 files, 350 MB total, and was just converted to 7--not optimized in any way. (We're testing the waters at the same time as beginning to plan migration) One immediate problem is the SLOWNESS of opening files in FM7. We have a simple "System Menu" file that opens as quick as one would expect, but trying to open most other files from there (via a simple "Open File" script) can take as long as 30 seconds or more... and not even on a server, but on a local machine! Hi! Can you easily import the contents and structure of a MySQL database into FileMaker? Or, at the very least, the data from a MySQL database? I have a MySQL database that I would like to have in FileMaker. Its not a huge database (ie, I could create the tables in FileMaker myself, import the data in csv format, recreate all the relations, etc), but it would be sweet if a more efficient or practical method existed. How can I lock text in a (global) field so a user cannot modify it? I tried preventing entry in browse and find modes, but that also prevents access to the scroll bar. Since the text is too long to display, the field must be scrollable--but I don't want the user to be able to modify it. Thanks. RD

hy there I am new to filemaker and strugle a little bit with some operations i would like to perform. i want to make a phone log, that is conceted with a customer table. the phone log table consist of the fields: name, caller_phone, message, date, call_for. Now when I'm on the phone I would like to be able to enter the first characters of the caller's name into the "name" field and the database retrieves a list with names from the customer table starting with those characters from which i can choose. FMP7 on reopen forgets the last screen and sort order. I arrange the screen and close, but when I open again the sort order is gone and FM is on a file in about the middle of the database instead of, say, at the top of the list where I left it. What's wrong? Is this a new "feature?" Version 6 always came back when it was left--same screen, same found group, same file. Furthermore, in 7, when I take a file from list to main, when I go back to list, the list has scrolled down a screen and is on a different file. Sorry if this has been asked, but I couldn't find an answer by searching... Our simple invoice db includes several repeating fields (quantity, description, price, extended). I have borders (top, bottom, left, right) turned on. In v5.5 it would put borders around all the repetitions. Now in v7, it will only put borders around repetitions that contain text. This looks silly to me. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Your help is appreciated!

I am setting up user accounts in FM7, and checking the "force user to change password at first login" option. When users go to login, they receive the prompt, put in their initial password, and the new one. The problem is that when they are logged in, their access privileges don't seem to match what they are expected to be. (User can't edit or view records even when they are supposed to) But if they do a relogin again, then everything works as expected. This only occurs when you create or reset an account with the "user must change password" option chosen. If they change the password themselves, it works fine. Hi All, Just getting started with FMP7 here (well, getting started with Filemaker, period.) I successfully merged my two FMP6 files into one multi-table FMP7 file and would like to begin adding modules to it. This is a rolodex application. The first thing I wanted to do was create a script to generate faxes. The way I'd l ike it to go is the user looks up the recipient's name in the rolodex, then a "create fax" button would create a new record in a fax table, with the recipient's name & company info plucked from the rolodex and pasted into the appropriate fields as a lookup. Hi-- I have a FM7 DB with several tables. One table (admin) allows a user to enter in details about a program, including individual fields which indicate all the days during the year the program will operate. I have a second table in the DB which users will be able to access to enter in positive attendance days for students. I would like the users to be able to see a value list of all program available dates (defaulted to todays date) which will allow them to edit/enter past attendance only for the dates that the program operates. In a found set, how can I bulk enter data into related fields inside a portal? I can create a new related record in the portal by simply entering data, which creates the related record and puts the data in the field, but how can I do this in bulk for a found set? I try "command =" but that doesn't work for fields in a portal. (It pretends to, but nothing happens.) Is there a way to bulk edit related fields in a portal whereby the related records are created and the data inserted into the field?

I've got a question on when I'd want/need to use MenuControl and when I'd be able to just use FileMaker to achieve my goal. I want to remove (meaning "get rid of so they're not visible", not "disable") all menus in a runtime solution for Mac and Windows. After browsing the posts here I thought that there wasn't a way to do this in FileMaker itself, so started looking at MenuControl. Hello, Has anyone had a problem where the fonts displayed on screen change to a different font? We are running FMP6.0 on a few machines, all accessing a server running FMServer 5.5. The OS on the machines is Win XP. The problem is only occurring in Filemaker, we have other applications running and they don't have this problem. Originally we thought that it was a corrupted font, so checked them all but it has not cured it. The problem occurs in a number of files, but not always at the same time. I'm having a real problem with fonts. I have several users in my solution, as well as one or two people helping me with programing. I have made some specific choices about fonts in my layouts, but with so many different people accessing the database, those decisions have been fruitless. Does anyone know of a plugin, or a way of creating a pseudo-font substitution table similar to what you see in programs like quark xpress and other desktop publishing applications. does anyone else meet the same problem? i am feeling really anxious about this now. Internet sharing is so important, and it gets disabled if IWP is access on local network. i tried several ports with no success, such as 80, 123, and 591. A few seconds after the database is access through IWP on a local network, the internet sharing is blocked. anyone else?

I have a card collectors database with 2 tables one for cards and one for sales. The sales table is a one to many relationship to cards table. I also have a self join to cards table to do lookups by series of cards. They are related by 'series'. I have 3 fields in the sales table that is setup as a portal to my cards layout - sales date, sales qty, sales amount. When the user is on a certain card, they can enter multiple sales for each card. I have a database confugured for IWP. The openscript contains a script step "Show/Hide Status Area [Lock; Hide]". Upon opening in Explorer the Status Area is hidden, but not locked. Anything I might be doing wrong?

I have a database configured for IWP. The main layout is supposed to work as a web form. The user creates a new record, then asks for a registration number, then there is a button to a script that does lookups of several fields in a related database, with the relationship based on the registration number. This way a registered user gets all his personal info entered into the new record he just created, and can then go on to fill in the information I need from them. This works well, until I attach a "Not Empty" validation to any of the fields in the main database. When I hit the lookup button the screen refreshes, but no lookups take place. I am curious... Is there any way to disable specific keyboard shortcuts or menu items? I ask because one of my colleagues, an admitted speed-freak, has been hitting <Command => by accident recently, while he has been meaning to hit <Shift => to get a "+" symbol. Being the speed demon that he is, when the Replace Contents dialogue appears, he doesn't even read the buttons and keeps going for the left one, which he whines is usually Cancel in most programs. (I have told him that Cancel is the default here, and on on the right, for a REALLY good reason, but he is an old dog and refuses to let it sink in.) Hi guys, I have a quotations database that has a portal to list the line items in (this way I keep a track of everything by accessing the line items database from invoicing, purchases, returns, etc - all writing to the same record) Now, if I make a quotation and then I want to make a revision version of the quotation, I want to be able to make a duplicate of a portal row so that I do not change the original record but a new one. Hi again everyone, You know how internet explorer and quickbooks have an autocomplete that remembers what you typed based on your history? So for example, once you start typing "fm" into your browser, it shows you a drop down box of "fmforums.com" and any other web sites that start with "fm". can u do that with FM or a plug-in?

When I attempt to update my copy of FM7 Developer On OSx Panther It stops midway through the proces and reports "An unexpected error occurred while installing "554490" 1008: 17, -4". I have a database that has multiple tables, to represent Visual Effects shots in a movie. One table - Shot - breaks down the shot into items such as description, day or night, length and so on. This is the master table with a unique shot number field as the main form of id. A second table - Element - breaks down the images required in each shot - Live Action, CG, Stills and so on. This is the related table, with the shot number used repeatedly for different elements. Shots are often duplicated, but the shot number field needs to be changed to differentiate things. I am currently a version 6 user. I have scripts that import data from MS Access. There are two limitations of v6 that I would like to ged rid of. And I am wondering if v7Pro solves these issues. I browsed the user manual for v7 but did not find what I need. The ODBC connectivity in version 6 does not allow me to use a parameter. In other words, I cannot run a parameter query. I cannot say, give me all rows where price > 5, where 5 is a value that my user entered. The second limitation is the script maker field mapping. I have a table Course with details of different courses. And 2 related tables, Facilitators and Enrollment. In a layout based on table Course, I have fields from the table Course(course name, course ID etc), a portal showing the Facilitator details(Facilitator ID, Facilitator status) of that course, from Facilitator table and a portal showing Enrollment details(Enroller ID, Enroller's Status from Enrollment table) of that Course. I have a database that is used to track job applicants. Each season, we have a "recruitment" period, twice per year. After each season, I'd like to be able to archive those applicants who we're no longer interested in... especially since one of the database's main functions is to show the current crop of applicants on various reports. I broke down and burned up a tech support call today regarding some issues. Here's what I was told: 1. Fonts blurred - that's a feature not a bug (I anticipated that answer)- "just increase your font size until it's not blurry anymore" What - 72 pt? 2. Hi guys, I have got a database with 4700 records in it and I have added a new field. I do not want it to be a calculation field but I want it to have a set result in all previous records. Hello all, I am interviewing for a job that includes administration of a FileMaker database. I have never used FileMaker before, but I am very familiar with PostgreSQL and MySQL, and I have dabbled with Oracle a bit. Could anyone point out any basic guides to FileMaker for me? Hi, I had no idea where to post this so I hope i'm in the right area. This may be an obvious question but i can't figure out how to do it. I have a database with stock codes. Each product has an associated file (with pictures, notes, etc. about the product) on a remote server. My question is how do i get filemaker to open the file for a certain product. I have the path to the file stored in one field and the stock code matches the file name. I don't want to have to hard code the path of each product to a button or anthing, i'd like it to be dynamic. HELP! I just got Filemaker Pro 7 and have what I'm sure is a VERY simple question (but I'm not getting it!). I have data for a photograph print competition that I want to get statistics on. There are different categories the prints can be entered in, and in each category the print can be given a blue, red, white or green ribon. What I'd like to be able to do is calculate 1)the total number of prints in the competition, 2) the total number of prints in each category, 3)the total number of blue, red, white, and green ribbons in each category. We have an elaborate collection of FileMaker 6 databases that relate to form a system that manages our business processes. We are looking at migrating to 7. Is there a 'general rule' we can follow as to how (and how many) we should arrange our tables in files? Having 50 tables in one file does not seem logical to me. Does anyone know of any documentation regarding design principles in this regard? I am reading 'Migration Foundations and Methodoligies' document and finding it usefull, but haven't been able to find reference to this. Thanks

I have a strange problem and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem and possibly a solution. I have a script in "File A" that calls a script in "File B". After the child script in B is fully executed, script A executes the "Exit Application" script step. The problem is that the filemaker.exe process is left hanging. The user does not know this until they try to open filemaker back up and nothing happens. If you go into the process window from the Task Manager and kill the filemaker.exe, you can go back into filemaker. After some trial and error, I discovered that the filemaker.exe is not left hanging if I don't call a script in File B. …

Does anyone know of a digital camera that works well with FM Pro. We have a setup right now were we take photos via a webcam, name them, save them to the server, then use the troi plugin to reference them in a container. We would like to simplifiy this by doing everthing in FM maybe using DDE, I am not sure. The users are not very computer savey so we need this to be as simple as we can get it. Thanks in advance

When I add new record, middle of data and I change my mind and cancel/delete the new record. After that new record start from new number and skip the cancel record number. Please review attached three pages. Every page is one proble alltogether three diffrent problems and problem I'm talking about is second page. I would like to be able to navigate though my records via Alpha buttons (A-Z) and I have not been able to any script commands to do this. I can go to record #x but I am not sure how to go to record with customers names beginning with "C". I know that I can do a find to isolate the "C" customers but I would prefer to just "goto" said customers.

I have a strange problem with Filemaker. I work for a school district. One of the departments uses a filemaker database hosted on a filemaker 5.5 server on our intranet. This database consistantly crashes filemaker 6 on start up. In other works if you double click on the database, Filemaker will open to the point of asking for the password. Once you enter the password, filemaker immediately crashes. The database works in filemaker 5 but you can not open it in fm6! Just last week one of the teachers told me the database would open if she opened it from a saved copy on a cd. I hope that someone might be able to shed some light on a problem that I am experiencing. There is a Filemaker 5 DB that I use on a daily basis, located on the server of our company LAN. My colleague needs occasional access to the DB at the same time as I am using it. We are both using Windows PCs and FM Pro v5.5. I used to run Win 2000, my colleague had XP and we had no problems: I would have the file open all day and act as the host and she could open it as a guest as and when she needed. Hi. I have a table with a drop down field where the use chooses a code. I want to make a layout that will summarize all the codes by type... how do I do this? I'm wondering if it is possible to create a related record just by a relationship and an auto-enter field? What I would like is where I make a new record in the parent table and set the appropriate field values in parent table and once I commit the record a new record is created in the related table. This is without using a set field of the related keys in the related table. I know related records can be created using a set field through the relationship but is it possible to create it without the set field and just by auto-enter fields that are bsed on the parent table? I am looking to replace MSoft Access with another development tool. FMP has been winning awards, its company support looks good, it has cross platform, etc, etc. So it seems like a good candidate on my short list (so is Alpha 5, but even more so VizFox Pro, or C#, but using the latter two means I'd miss out on leveraging the existing functionality built in to Alpha 5 and esp. In FileMaker 6, if I had a value list that pulled data from two fields, say item number and item name, and set the value list to sort by the second field, I could use that field to jump in the list. For example, if the value list looked like this: 12345 Apples 67890 Oranges 24680 Pears I could press the letter 'P' and jump right to 'Pears' in the list. I cannot seem to do this in FM7. Is this no longer a feature? Or is there some trick to make it behave in this fashion?

Hello, here is my question. One user logged on our database and clicked a button which takes her to go to another file layout. When that file opened, it will freeze up for a couple of minutes to display all the fields and portals. When she tried to add a new record, the value list takes for ever to load. I checked every other user went to that layout without any problem. Do you have any idea about this? Thanks!

I am creating a custom DB solution for my company and wanted to insert buttons with rounded edges. The problem is that when you click the button, the entire rectangular shape of the button image goes grey. Is there anyway to make the mouse down color follow the transparency of my GIF? Hi all, I am new to the forum here, and new to FM7, though FM user for years. I had a question that I hope I can make simple. I am creating a solution for a music school that has tables for FAMILIES, STUDENTS, FACULTY and INVOICES. The relations are all set nice, students to their families, for billing etc. BUT here's where I need help. I create an invoice and enter a FAMILY number. hi all... i have two tables related to each other by Purchasing Order. In the master record there is Customer Name, Purchasing Number, etc. Then in child table are order details. i made another layout that is supposed to be available only in table view, which lists all the orders and their details. the layout is based on the child table, and it has a field Customer Name that is from the master table. what happens is that in the table view, the Customer Name gets repeated several times in its field for each row. Hi, I have a database that is used to track job applicants. Each season, we have a "recruitment" period, twice per year. After each season, I'd like to be able to archive those applicants who we're no longer interested in... however, we'd like to be able to pull up their records at a moment's notice. Hi, My company has developped an application using FM 6. They want to migrate to version 7, but their application is not easy to convert since it is splitted in multiple files (mainly due of the file size limitation). The converted application in FM 7 is REALLY slow and is still fragmented in multiple files. Basically, by using XML export operations in FM 6 and some Java, I want to build a FM script that will be able to create the tables I need with their fields relations. We have just upgraded from FM5.5 to FM7. We are now encountering problems with file sharing which we haven't previously eg... when opening multi relational files there are difficulties opening its relational files with messages like 'busy' and 'open remote'. when an user with no access to a layout and its records, and try to view the layout online in IWP, it crashes IE 6 and enters an infinite loop that keeps on displaying a dialog box with only OK. it happens when one has a menu selection that directs the user to try to access the layout... does anyone encounter the similar problem?
