Hi everyone! I want to copy (in a script) all records (0 - many) from a database (called main) where a specific field ("id") matches a number (say 7) to a different database (called temp). The temp database is empty but with fields defined. How? Is there another way than doin it record by record? /Tobias

My databases have started to act a little touchy recently. When I open the database I am getting an error -10000. In my search for answers i have found only a possibility of a lock synchronization error but the error codes do not match up exactly. Searching for error -10000 on the filemaker knowledge base is futile. I have rebuilt all the databases and reinstalled filemaker as well. It helped for a little while but then the error started coming up again. Can anyone tell me with some curtainty what error -10000 is and how i might avoid it in the future? Thanks for your help

I am a beginning user. I am using FileMaker Pro 6 on Mac OS X. I have the Web Companion using port 801. I have Personal FileSharing Enabled on my Mac. I have a file called 'client.fp5' that opens up in browse mode showing an individual record for a client (name, address, phone, related invoices, etc.) Here's the scenario....a customer calls and wants to place a service call, on this screen I just mentioned, I would like to be able to type in their last name, do a search, if it is found, then I could go to their record and create a new invoice, if no matching record was found, then I would have a choice of creating a new record for this client, after which point I could then create a new invoice. What is the best way to do this?

Here's what I have: Client.fp5 - Stores client info (name, address, phone, etc.) When a new client is added there is a Customer ID automatically assigned to that new customer. Invoice.fp5 - The invoice that gets printed out with the customer info, etc. What I'm trying to do: Right now I can go to the invoice screen and type in the customer ID and the client info will automatically be inserted where needed on the invoice. I would like to simplify this process. Hello, I was wondering if anyone has done this already. I am trying to use Filemaker Pro to connect via ODBC to a MySql database in another city. I need to update product tables for a website and my boss needs to use Filemaker pro only (for some reason). I would appreciate advice on the ODBC driver for OS 10.2, and how to establish an IP connection to MySQL database (they tell me that ODBC is all set up on the mysql end). Thank you , Denis

I have a client file that when opened, asks you for a password (for editing) if no password is entered then the file opens and the editing features are disabled. The problem is this: I got tired of having to hit enter on the password screen upon starting the app. and decided to go into the document preferences and set it to open the file using the default password. It does that just fine. The problem is that I can no longer open the file to edit it.....can't figure out how to reverse this. Any suggestions?

This is my first time ever touching a filemaker program, and no one else in the office has a clue. I am completely on my own. So, you will be hearing from me often. One of the first problems I came across with filemaker was with the delete feature. I had created 1 database with 5 different type of records in it. Hi, all! We all have reports we need to write, and sometimes those reports have grand totals. So we all make a Trailing Grand Summary and put the Grand_Total summary field in there, smile, and be happy. The problem is, what happens when records fill a page such that it bumbs our Trailing Grand Summary section off on to the next page? Well, the result is a poorly-looking report that is formatted something like... hi all i recently got an error message while in "define fields" saying that the file was damaged. this happened as i was saving a calculation. it gave me the choice to continue or exit. i had this happen to me a while back, but fm would just crash without giving me choice. when i called support they told me i maxed-out fields, i was at about 5900 fields. they said that how the fields were named would affect how many would be available. so i made some adjustments and everything's been fine. since then i've added fields and not had any problems. i had it to about 6500 fields when the problem at the top occurred. i did perform a recover and it said there were no problem…

I'm working on a meta-analysis DB for my wife's dissertation project, and I was wondering if there were any resources out there to add more advanced statistical capabilities to FMPro. . . We are calculating Effect Size r, Standard Error, weighted and unweighted means, and then we'll be transforming Cohen's d to Effect Size r. I am responsible for all aspects of a monthly trade magazine (editorial and advertising). I inherited FM as the db to track ad sales activity. FM is used mostly as a database to track contact with clients & prospects. Is Filemaker Pro 5.0 the best tool for that use? (I'm not a database expert, but it seems to me there may be other software -- such as ACT -- better suited for this use.) Hello All, I'm having a lot of trouble getting rid of some white-space in a report layout that I've made. I can't for the life of me figure out why this space shows up... the objects/fields above and below this space have been given the ability to "slide" up using the FORMAT-SLIDING/PRINTING options. Is there something I'm missing? The white space occurs at the beginning of my BODY... before the body, in the layout, I have stuff in a TITLE HEADER AND HEADER. Since the white space occurs only on the first page of info (and not on page2), I can conclude that there's no problem with the HEADER and that this white space is somehow created in the TITLE HEADER …

Okay, this one's real weird... I have a database with info on 6 records stored in a particular database. I created a report-layout that contains a TITLE HEADER, HEADER, BODY, TRAILING GRAND SUMMARY, FOOTER, and TITLE FOOTER. The database's records are about companies A through F. The weird thing is that when I view data of Company A in PREVIEW mode, I see that all the info related to Company A shows up on pages 1 and 2 in my report (info i had in the TITLE HEADER, HEADER, BODY, TITLE FOOTER, and FOOTER)... but the info (some bit of text) that I placed in the TRAILING GRAND SUMMARY of this record's layout shows up on page 3 with info of COMPANY F showing …

I'm not sure where to post this but here we go: I have designed a sales report that basically takes the information out of my database does some calculations and drops all of the information into a form which I created, which in essesnce looks like and Excel spreadsheet. Accross the top of each column are the months and the rows are labeled as separate sales categories. What I want to do is have the report print out normally Jan-Dec, then the following month I want the report to start with Feb and go to Jan. Is there an easy way to do this without changing all of my field definitions along with making 12 separate layouts? Thank you

I've inherited a a sprawling (68 tables) FM database with many field definitions and relationships. I'm trying to get a handle on it all (running FM 6.0, not Developer), and I find it increasingly annoying that every time I open a Define Fields or Define Relationships dialog box, I have to resize the column headers so I can see the entire field name or relationship name or whatever. Along the same lines, in the Define Scripts dialog, some script steps (like SetField) are truncated such that I have to open the Specify Field dialog in order to see what field is being set. Hi, Does anyone experienced this ? Sometimes, when creating a new relationship, FM doesn't let me open the "Reference" box for me to choose the right-side file. After quitting FM and having launched it again, it works fine. Kind of irritating... FM 5.5 on Mac OS 8.6 Thanks.

When I add a new record in a db, the record is added at the end of the file, so I sort the database in startup script to get the record in the correct place. When I reopen the database later, unsorted, the record is still at the end of the file -( This of course means I have to sort the db each time I open the database. No big consequence when working locally, but when working via WAN for example the sorting takes a g e s ... How can i renumber or reindex the records permanently once sorted so that they stay in the same position? Can I run a script on shutdown that renumbers or reindexes the records?

I've searched these forums looking for an answer to this question but haven't found it yet: Is it possible to automaticaly open databases when FMPro (or FMPro Unlimited) is launched? In other words, when I start the application can I have the application open the databases for me? I have about 10 I need to have open all the time, and want them to re-open automatically if the machine gets rebooted, for example. Thanks, Robert

Why can't I do a search in the header area? I need a layout to show the title of the project and then all the related items to that project. User - "We should be able to create reports to include any field we need to include open as well as closed records" - Basically they need customizable reports based on what is being requested. My thoughts were that I could do it two ways. 1. Discuss with the user what reports they would need and come up with a fairly complete list of reports that would meet almost any need ahead of time or. 2. Create a layout that allows them to select which field goes in what column, thus allowing them to build the reports as they need it. Is the second option even possible? This app was written by someone else and the users want to add functionality to it. Any suggestions?

I am running a database on FM Unlimited 5.0. There is an inventory file with a portal to a related file showing activity against the inventory record in the main file. My problem is that when I do a search if there is only one match the portal is always empty. However, if there are several matches the portal (for the same record) contains the correct data. Has anyone experienced this before - and how did you resolve it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I believe this is a calculation problem. The data looks like this; Each record has three fields <State> <Miles> <Gallons> We process fuel taxes for truckers and must create a report that totals the amount of miles traveled and gallons of fuel purchased in each state. We will enter Data that looks like; <AZ> <151> <200> <CA> <132> < > <NV> <115> < > <AZ> <100> < > <NM> <200> <150> etc... So recently I went through one of my databases and I have found over 200 records from a specific Date, 3/13/2003, that no one ever entered. The records are all from old information. Now it could be possible that we crashed that day. So am assuming that the records could be the result of that crash. But why such a large Number? Also I cannot find them when I type, "3/13/03", I must type, "3/13/2003". Now is there anything I need to worry about with that database. Should I do a save as clone and re-import all the records? has anyone had this problem?

Hi, I have an e-mail address database that 5 other files need to have access to. I'm using the SMTPit plug-in to facilitate e-mailing from these files and in the 1st db, I've scripted an "add" button that opens the e-mail db, allows the user to select a recipient and then pastes the e-mail address in the To field. This works great with the first of the 5 db files but I can't figure out how to make it work with the others. This happens across all databases in the particular FM 5 install. If you are in layout mode and you want to drag a field to move it elsewhere in the layout it duplicates that field instead. How can I get it back to just move a field when I drag it? I checked all the preferences and menus but can't find any setting that would seem to create this behavior. Thanks for your help.

I have a file [Mfr] that has 2 fields. I have one formatted as UPPER CASE and the other field formatted as Title Case. I have a file [Cont] that has a portal from the [Mfr] file with the above two fields in it. They have also been formatted to UPPER CASE and Title Case respectively. My problem is the names in the fields from the portal are shown the way the data was entered into the filed in the [Mfr] file. So if one manufacturer was entered as FORD and the other as chrysler, that is just the way it is shown in the portal field even though the text formatting is set to UPPER CASE. Is there a way to fix this so all names in this field are UPPER CASE? Thank…

I have a Filemaker 5 Server/Host in an Apple OS9 Network with several Clients. In the Filemaker Database the User can listen to many Soundfiles, normally. Sometimes the linking is lost and you get the error message "File could not be found...locate file again". The Database and the soundfiles are on the same server but on different harddrives. Is that a problem? Sometimes when you relink a file the other files in the same folder are atomically relinkt too.

i've read in several places, these boards included, when laying out dbs, or even before you're laying it out, that it's helpful to graph the way you want the information to flow. i think this is a great idea, and to some extent i wish i had done this. i now have 5 files with the smallest at 30 records and the largest at 650 records. i'm very happy about the way i've designed it/it's designed itself, i'm learning as i go. but now i wish i had documented some things (relationships/match fields/etc) better than i have done. does anyone have any advice for "back-documenting" a fm db? i would like to improve the way i have things set up, and i am positive there is much…

I'm not sure into what category this question fits, so I thought I'd post it here in the General discussion. I was talking with a friend who develops databases and uses a program called ACT (window-based). He said he is able to attach other documents (e.g. Word documents, Excel documents, etc.) to a database record. Is this possible in FM Pro? I have a Contact.db in which I keep track of all the times I've contacted people in my database. It would be great if I could attach all pertinent documents to that record. Hi all, I have problems configuring the Web server connector: Whenever I type http://localhost/FMpro?config my browser doesn't find a thing. My Filemaker databases are open and shared. Web Companion is set to use port 591 What am i doing wrong? Any suggestions are welcome. Hi. I posted a little while ago with some questions on legacy versions of FM. The answers were really helpful. Now the company I work for is about to make the jump to OS X and I have a question I can't find an answer to anywhere else. The office needs just three people to use FM and one file on it. Including the server, there are four people. If I buy ONE copy of FileMaker for the office, can it go on all four machines? Hello all, About every other day or so, a FMP-6 database I built crashes while doing a date search on about 8000 records. It also will randomly return a no records found response to a known good date range when the starting point is all records. The random crash is corrected via "Recover" while the no records found problem is recovered via a re-start of the Host CPU. The system is configured with a 2.4 GHz P4 CPU, 256 MB ram, 40 Gg Hard drive and running Win 2K. Machine as the host with no other apps running. I'm trying for the first time ever to publish a very very simple database online for our camp coordinators to enter in product information on the road. I go into FMPRO UNLIMITED and share the database and set up all of the important info to get it shared. I go into my web browser and type in the 192.168.x.x and the port number that I told it to use "84". Here is the fun question of the day...We have a multiple database filemaker sales solution and what I need to do is create a report listing the quantity of sales of one item per month. We have a line items file which contains a record for each time the item was sold. Can someone offer me some insight on this? I have an 'Artist" database that I have included in this post. There are 2 layouts, "Artists". and "Artist Report". When you enter data in the "Artists" layout it then displays the spins in a column on the "Artist Report" layout as well as the week ending data in the header for that Artist. As we enter new records we date them exactly 7 days apart. What I would like to do is to get the "Artist Report" to display not only the current week ending date and current spins, but also the previous week ending data and the previous weeks spins. We recently upgraded the OS on our machine to win2k. Everything works great, except for a little anoying problem: We are using FMPro V5.0v3. In the Status Area (far left hand side of the screen) the Layout Pop-Up Menu has changed slightly. We have quitea few layouts, and in the past, the layout pop-up menu would create 3 columns with all the layouts defined. Now under Win2k we have just one column, and a down arrow at the bottom which allows us to scroll down the list. This scrolling is not nearly as convinient as having the multiple columns appear. I have the common problem of system/document formats for date/time being different on the machine I develop the files on to the machine that I install the files on for the clients. I know that I can use a startup script that includes the line: Set Use System Formats (On) But is there any way to actually change the document to use the system format permenantly, instead of every single time the document is opened? It seems a bit ridiculous to have to do this every time the file is opened!

I'm on the latest trial version of Filemaker on my Mac OS X and my PC. I saved a FM file on the Mac and e-mailed it to my PC, where it couldn't be opened. Filemaker said it was not a Filemaker file or was severely damaged. I tried this many times with the same result. What could be happening here? Oddly, any file I e-mail from my PC to my Mac OS X opens fine, it just doesn't work the other way around. Thanks, Corey Martin

Does it seem counterintuitive to anyone else that when you drag the contents of a field to another field FileMaker does an insertion rather than a replace. Dragging "Joe" into a field that already had "Bill" gives "JoeBill" as the result instead of replacing Bill with Joe. This may be a feature request for FileMaker, unless someone has a way around this. Would it be possible to write a plug-in to change this behavior? Perhaps I'm missing the utility of having an insertion rather than replacement. Thoughts any one?

When viewing records in a FM database using View As List feature, it may desirable to change or highlight the record that is currently being accessed. Is there any way to change the color of the background of the current record and then change it back to the original color when the record pointer moves to a new record. Hi, I've just built a test of a new server on an OSX 600 mhz iMac with 512mb of ram and FMPro 6 unlimited I'm finding that it's serving custom web publishing pages at a snail's pace compared to v5 running on an early G4 450 where they work very quickly. I'm using the same databases which were created in v5 and the same cdml pages. What can I do to make it run as quick as the Classic version? There's no difference with no other applications running and I'm reluctant to put it onto a quick G4 until I get a reasonable performance first. thanks, Jeff

So I've upgraded to a new G4 with 2GB of RAM. When I opened my Filemaker Pro 5.5 Installer a window appeared saying that I didn't have enough memory to continue and that a minimum of 8MB was required. Obviously, Filemaker doesn't know what a Gigabyte is. Does anyone know of a workaround for this?

Have any one created a "tree view" in Filemaker? Just like the tree view object in Visual Basic? in List Mode.... I know it is possible to make "tree view" using portals. But I wan't to use them in a List View (View as List) Mode. I have an email client (sort of) database in filemaker, and I want to create a tree view on the left side for Inbox, Outbox, Sent etc... just like in Outlook. Any Ideas? Any sample files? Thank you!

I was after, if possible, a script or some way to have TEXT not printed if a field calculation was not used. If that particular calc. is used then the TEXT will show/print. EG. PRINT VIEW 2hrs X $50.00p/hr= $100.00 CALC USED CALC NOT USED If there is NO input for the Calc to be used (not needed), then the X & the = will not be printed. The reason i want to do this is for a QUOTE FORM. I am a 10-year on and off FMP user, and recently on all databsaes I have built, when I move a field on any layout, it copies itself, which is a real pain. I have not found any documentation on this. I was wondering how and when a record gets locked by another user accessing it. For example: does related records gets locked too ? Does the record gets locked even if the user doesn't have write access to it (or to any of the fields in the layout he is on) ? I have an inserted object that is activated to allow the user to work with a mapping program. It works very nice. However when the map program is being edited the size adjustment boxes are present. I am relatively new to Filemaker so I'm hoping to get some advice from the experts. I am working on a Filemaker system that creates records when items get moved from one location to another. There is no location data, just records that show what quantities have been moved. The system does child to parent lookups but not parent to child. In other words, you can easily see where something came from, but when you are looking at an old record you have no idea if the item you moved is still where you put it. Hi........ I am running Windows Xp..home edition. I copied filemaker files to a cdrw disk formatted using Direct CD. When I try to open the files either with Filemaker 4 or Filemaker 6, it opems in restricted mode, and will not let me do anything with the file. I copied the files back to a zip disk, and the files open correctly, without a problem. Does anyone have any ideas on what is happening here? Thanks Russ Bunker

I'm pretty new to FM. I've been searching these boards and found many useful suggestions. But here is a specific to my case and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. The setup: a small movie production company with 5 or 6 iMacs and iBooks link via ethernet/Airport LAN to a hardwired eMac shared file server. The eMac hosts Prairie Server/Quickconference and FM Server 3.0 simultaneously. The only FM database is a phone log that is constantly being updated - about every 4 or 5 minutes from any of the Mac terminals. Hi guys, In layout mode when I try to move the fields by just dragging them somewhere, FileMaker thinks I want to copy them, and does just that. I am not holding down any other key, just dragging the mouse. Machine is Cube, with OS 10.2.6 and FM 5.0 running on it. After some time (seems time is random) Filemaker will generate an error of "Database Not Open" when users try to connect to the web front-end I have created (when, in fact, when I look at the console, FMP is maximized and running-all DBs ARE open, I can perform things on the open DBs from within FMP itself). I'm running Filemaker 5.0V3 (unl) and web connector 5.0V6 under Win2kpro. Has anyone seen this before? Once any user gets this error, the web front-end is useless (for everyone) until I restart Filemaker. This is a major concern! I just posted a qustion, but cannot find it, I'm afraid I did something wrong, so I'm asking it again.... We have databases on two systems, both are running under OS10, one is FMUnlimited, another is FMServer. On those systems we have related databases.. Relationships FMU->FMS work fine, hovewer when we opn database on FMS it cannot find the related files from FMU and we have to choose them manually. What can be wrong here?

I'm wondering if any of the pre-V.5x versions for pc have appletalk as an available protocal. I need to use my XPpro system on a Mac/Appletalk based network, and while I have Appletalk set up (filesharing is available) my version 3 F.M.Pro does'nt give me the option to use Appletalk. Okay, I thought I'd had problems before, but now I'm totally stuck. I can't even open FileMaker. If I choose it from my startup menu, if I click on the program itself, if I directly try to open an .fp5 file ... I get nothing! There's a pause, and sometimes the hourglass icon, and then it just stops. No error message, nothing. This happened on a colleague's computer last week, and I rebooted her machine and it went away. This morning it's happening on mine, and restarting hasn't helped anything. I don't know what forum to put this in, so I'm just hoping somebody can help. I'm (not) running v6 on Windows 2000.

Hello, I have 40+ FM files open during use. Getting to the desktop is a big problem as the user will need to minimize all windows before reaching the desktop icons. Is it possible to run all FM files in a single window/frame so the user will only need to minimize one frame? As the database is gettig new files regularly it is impossible to handle this with scripts. It's running on FM6 and Macs. Any help is appreciated...

Hey - Now that I have a dedicated server to FMP (Not FM Server) and have actual user levels... my question is this: To launch/access the databases now, users must open FMP on their desktop, click "Hosts" to get connected to the FM Server, then select one of the non-hidden databases available to them. There's GOT to be an easier way to get into them from the desktop! Shortcuts/aliases aren't working. For regular users it's annoying, for the minimum access users, it will be way too confusing for them!! (We haven't told them it's on their machine yet!) PLEASE TELL ME THERE'S A BETTER WAY.... THANKS!!!
