I have a layout for a quotations form with several repeating fields. In FM 6 I formatted those fields to have a border around each of the repeating fields. In FM 7 the borders do not show up unless I put data in that repitition of the repeating field. It appears that the only the side borders show up but either the top border shows above the repitition with data in it or the bottom border from the rep above the rep with data. Summary - not all of the borders show up even after I tell them to in the Layout Format menu.

Hello, I have created a report with sub-summaries. Is there a way to create a report with only the sub-summary totals and not any of the individual lines making up the sub-summary? For example, I have an item database that has part numbers, class codes, and quantities. I want to summarize the quantities based on class code, but I only want to see the totals and not all of the individual items that make up the totals. Or, is there a way to show all the sub-summaries totals at the end of the report and not at the end of each class section?

Is it possible to partition a layout in such a way that the header district is always visible, no matter how far you have scrolled down the page? This is possible in a columnar type layout, but is it possible in a general blank layout? Some of my layouts have many fields and I would like to have button driven scripts always available without having to scroll to find them. Is there a way to do this? Thanks, Jarvis

I have created two tables with a join table inbetween, I am trying to make a layout which will allow me to enter data in both tables on the same screen. I have tried to use a portal, as described in "using filemaker pro 7" to no avail, I am now attempting to use the "create fields in layout" tool, also as described in "using filemaker pro 7" and I am still not able to enter data.... what am I doing wrong??? I am wondering what happens on layouts when you change the name of the underlying table occurrence. I have noted that if I change the table designation of a layout, I have to go through each of the fields on the layout and update the dictionary link to use the layout's new table occurrence (TO). And so, I have refrained from changing my layouts to use specific, contextually useful TO's. However, I do not know what might happen to these layouts if I change the name or context of an existing TO. I am fairly new to Filemaker and need some help creating a summary report of survey responses. I need to create a report that has a count of each response submitted and what percentage of the total answers that the response represents. IN MySQL i can use a SELECT query i.e. SELECT Count(fieldname) WHERE fieldname = "value". I'm trying to copy a layout, call it layout A, including the records to be copied to another layout, call it layout B. I need to have all the records, fields, content, and everything in layout A to be in layout B. so layout B should be exactly the same as layout A. there are about 4000 records in layout A and i'm not familiar with scripting, what is the best way to duplicate the layouts? i could only copy the layout but none of the contents get copied over. any suggestion is much appreciated! -pokeguy

This isn't a great crisis but having recently written a solution on a laptop and then transferred it to a server in the office running Filemaker Server, everything seems to work fine except that I've found that pictures that I placed (under transparent script buttons) cannot be found (despite placing them in the databases folder) and hence they don't display. There are 5 pics on each of over 60 layouts and I can't face individually re-inserting them. File references only seem to cover related fmp files. Any advice gratefully received.

I am trying to figure out how to get Filemaker recognize when different lay outs should be used. I work for a missing childrens org and we've created a searchable DB so that our web site visitors can browse through all the missing children in our Database and print out posters of the ones they choose. It works fine but we can only use one lay out "Child photo, case info and contact information" but sometimes we need to have use a different layout, like when there is an abductor photo or information, or if there are multiple children missing and an abductor. Hey, I have a layout that when in browse mode is displayed as a list of records. I want to create a button on the list that will allow the user to print / preview, the related report. I set it up so there is an icon on the list (meaning that the icon appears repitiously down the screen... not a big deal). But when I write the script to have it go to preview mode and print... it always previews record 1, not the record from which I selected via the icon. I was trying to modify the script but I didn't see a "select this record" type command... can anyone help me? or give me a different method of choosing from teh list view to print? Much Thanks... I got a problem with the scroll bars on my Labels layout. They randomly appear/disappear: When I first visit the layout they don't show up but if I go to Labels then another layout and come back to Labels they are there! Is there a way to control these scrolls bars at all?

How can I number my lists in reports that are created? I want to use Record Number Symbol, but when I have multiple lists on the same page, the second list continues with the next number rather than starting from 1 again.

I am (trying to) replace a bunch of Excel spreadsheets that are manually updated with info stored in a FM database. We currently have a report by location, with a supervisor listed in each column across the page, and the employees that report to the supervisor alphabetized and listed below each supervisor's name. I would like to make a layout with each record displaying in a column, and the field names displaying to the left, as in the example below, where "||" separates the field name (which should only display once on the left side) from the fields, and "|" separates each record: Record number||123|456|789| Time||2.5|3.5|7| Date||10/12|2/3|6/7| Of course in the layout I would want each record's fields lined up neatly, which can't be done here. I'm building a time clock The first layout you see is a switchboard that takes workers to their own personal screen. When they get to this screen they select a task and then have two options: If they are not currently working on something they can hit the START button. If they want to clock out they can hit the STOP button. I would like to have only one of these buttons visible at a time. The START button already inserts current time into a start field. I have a DB script that is doing some data manipulation. In my script, the db leaves the current layout to do some manipulation in another table. It's triggered by the value that is in a field of the original layout. When it comes back to the original layout, I would like the script to start at the field that it left off at. I am having trouble geting the script to go to the next field. When I come back to the layout, it starts at the first field. I tried putting in a temp Global variable but the Goto Field step does not allow for variables. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

I have a standalone solution created for both Mac and Win with two levels of user groups. I set the access permissions so that Group 1 can see all 9 layouts and Group 2 can only see 3 of the 9. However, both can see all the buttons that take them to certain layouts. My problem is that when people in group 2 click on a button that is supposed to take them to a restricted layout, a completely gray screen appears with "<<No Access>>" in boldfaced and italics. They cannot navigate anywhere else after that and have to quit and come back into the solution. Anyone have any advice on how they can just return to the previous layout?

I am a Filemaker Pro newbie, and I am hoping one of you experts will have mercy and tell me what mistake I am making. I have spent the better part of a day trying to solve this problem, and I'm getting desperate. In the layout view of a report, I have created a title header. Unfortunately, that title header does not show up in the preview mode, nor does it show up in the printed version. The report is just a table of fields chosen from the database. The table prints nicely, but without the title. What do I need to do to get the title header to appear in the preview mode? Thanks.

Is it posible to see multiple list views (from 2 different tables) in one layout? For the invoices I am creating I need to show 2 different lists of data (items & services) on the same invoice. Hello, I have a button on my layout which takes the user back to the main form. I have turned off auto saving of data and do ti all under this button because the validations in the fields sometimes trigger in a field which my user is not in. so, my plan is to detect if the record has changed under the button in a script. If the record has been edited or is new, then Validate it, if not, my user is only viewing it, so just go to the the other view? is this possible to do ? Is there a way to seperate repeting fields on a layout? I have 12 storage units & I want to keep track of who is renting, date payment is paid, unit # and amount short. I have all on seperate fields such as Shed #1 Shed #2 Shed #3 and so on. It looks pretty messy in the define fields, I was thinking there must be a cleaner wat to do this? My wife checks these people in so I wanted a flat simple record for her, Is there a better way of doing this?

Hi A user insists that they be able to pick a contact using a small popup layout. I have looked at the Business_Tracker solution from fm7 and it uses popups. However, they are not modal and I see my user clicking on the main layout (unintentionally of course) and then going "hmm, the popup window disappeared, let me click the button again"... resulting (potentially) in a number of popup windows all behind the main layout. Is there a way to do this modally? or will 'bad things' happen? what's the forum members opinion on usage of this? .. and how have you dealt with it? thanks for your input on this in advance, sincerely, J__

Hi, When I am writing text to a text field and the text is about to go off the bottom of the page, I scroll down (as you do). However, I get horizontal lines appearing where the base of the window used to be. Also, if I carry on typing (so the window scrolls itself), some lines of text seem to disappear (they haven't actually gone anywhere and you can click outside the text box to make them appear again). Is this a known problem ? Has anybody had it before ? Thanks, Roger.

Is there a way to restrict the records that are viewable in a layout based upon set criteria? For example, if I have a table that contains records which contain an employee's ID number that correlates to specific transactions, so that when the employee navigates to a "My Transactions" layout that the only records that can be browsed are the ones that relate to that employee. I know I can set general limits on records based upon privelege sets but that leaves the "<No Access>" in the unavailable records, I would prefer those records to just not be shown. Or, is there a way to make a script atuo-execute upon navigating to a specific layout?

Hello, I have been using FileMaker for 12 years at least. We recently upgrades from versions 5 and 6 to version 7 (3 licenses on Mas OS X 10.3.5 and Windows XP home). I experience in various layouts and in different databases (upgrades from version 6) that letters are partially cut, alway at the right side. This happens as well with normal fields thans with the fields of envelope type (within brackets). For the last one, even if I add a space after the closing bracket, the layout and print problem is still there. The problem did never appear under versions 5 or 6 nor under previous versions. This seems like a basic problem, but I've spent hours trying to figure it out without success... Consider a basic invoice presented as a table with 3 records in it. Each record has several fields (name, quantity, price) separated from each other by a small vertical line, so as to have it look like a column. I would like to have the vertical line fill out the rest of the page all the way down to the footer (even thouth there are only a few records)... The more records there are the shorter the line... Hello ppl, I need a Quicktime player on my layout which I can play a sound on. When I click in another field, where I want to put my data in, the sound stops. I don't know if I can still hear the sound while I am inserting my other data into the layout?? I found out that the sound will keep playing on a layout, even when I open another layout (where I can insert my data also). Hi, I have a little database, which I run on Mac OSX - on a Powerbook.. i think it's 1168x9 - sorry can't remember the rest not near my pbook right now. Then I have a pc which i is 1024X768. Everything on the windows side appears bigger. to the point that what fit nicely on the mac os x screen in one page, now requires scrolling. how should I handle this so that I do not have to write a different layout for each platform? thanks, J__

I want to display on a printout a list of Boxes and inside each of these Boxes, display all the Products that belong to it. I'm designing a layout that is a sales sheet for real estate properties. Each property is unique regarding the content that I want/need to show on the layout. So, I've come up with a list of fields like: ACREAGE, PARKING, HEATING, ZONING... and so on. I want these fields turned on or off depending on if they are being used or not for that record. BUT I also want the TITLE of the field -- which is in a bolder version of the same font -- to be turned off also, PLUS I want it all to slide up accoringly and always look good. AND have the ability for the fields content to be long or short depending on the content. Please help. I'm new at FileMaker.

I have a report with a header, body and footer. Header and footer work correctly. The body has a long text box and 2 picture containers at the bottom. The pictures slide up to adjust to the size of the text. The problem is that the pictures are sometimes split accross 2 pages. The user usually has to insert carriage returns to put the pictures on to the second page. Is there a way to put a page break right before the pictures so that the picutres show on the next page? I have a transparent field with white text. The field itself is a pull down menu, but I notice that the pull down menu is always WHITE, meaning the text cannot be seen (white on white). I cannot color the field background, because it is on top of a gradiated image that needs to show through. Needless to say, the background image is dark. Am I missing something mighty obvious, or is this a rather slack piece of programming on FM's part? Thanks for sharing your expertise with me!

Hi. I have a couple of different tables which have lists of items (records). I want to create one mega-report as a month ending summary. I am probably going to script the find that will return the period of time I want. But how do I make that happen for 5 separate sub-reports and then combine all those one-month results into one? I figured at first I could portal-it into a new layout but in order to do that I'd have to somehow create a relationship to a central table (which one doesn't exist). In MS Access I just inserted the sub-report, but I'm new to FM so I don't have a clue how to do it. Thanks.

Hi, Is there a way to remove the dotted lines around fields when they are modified with a script (or when you click on a part of the layout that is not a button)? I know that setting the fields "allow entry" option to off removes those lines, but I need the fields to allow entry.

I've an Order table with several Lines related to it. A Line belongs to an Order by using a relationship. I would like to make a print of this Order. I tried with a layout related to Order with 3 parts : header, body and footer. In header is all the information about the order (customer name, order number etc). In the body I want to see all the Lines related to this Order. I want this body to grow with the number of Lines. The footer contains the total price, rebates etc... This is really basic but it's not easy to do. But I'm unable to get that. Can you tell me how to do that? Thank you for your help

Ok...on many of the sample files that I have looked at here at FMForums I have noticed that sometimes the part name of the layout is vertical instead of the standard horizontal. I like the vertical style much better (provides a cleaner looking layout in design mode) but how on Earth can I set the part names to be vertical? I am most likely missing something very simple.

I love the FMP7 feature of layouts that do not immediately save, but hate that it prompts you every time you click outside a date entry box, instead of just when you try to leave the record/close the window. Basically, when a user is about to leave a record, I need to offer three options: Save, Revert, and Save with Version Update. The last option has some housekeeping routines attached, and rely on a user choice to know which to run. Easy enough to script, but the problem is that REVERT only works when the layout is set to *not* save immediately, but then the problem is that whenever the user clicks outside of a data entry box, Filemaker automatically offers up…

I have a layout on which there is a single editable field formatted as a pop-up list and a portal that displays records based on that pop-up list. The problem I am having is that, because there is no second editable field, the pop-up list reopens everytime after you select a value. Omitting the editable field from the Tab Order doesn't help. Adding another editable field just looks dumb. Any ideas??

Novice here. I am trying to print labels with the same text on every label to go on folders to be given out. The self-adhesive labels are from Office Max and do not have a standard format id. They are on 8.5 x 11, 3 across, each is 1" x 2 5/8" , 30 labels. I have 3 lines of text on each and the first line is a larger font size than the other 2 lines. I set up the label sizes manually at 1" high. When I print them, as you move down the page, each block of text moves just a little bit farther down in the label. Could the larger font size on the first line of text be causing this? What to do?

Hi! I'm new here and hope you'll forgive me if my question is too easy. I have "Yield" field and 2 repeating fields "wt%" and "Amount in LBS". In "Amount in LBS" field I need the following calculation performed: (Yield * wt %) / 100.The problem is that when I change the value in the "Yield" field, just the first row in the repeating field recalculates itself. Is anyone else frustrated with FileMaker 7's inability to distinguish word breaks? I use a lot of "text based" layouts (for invoices, etc) that have some text that now is breaking within words so that part of a word is on a second line. I don't recall this ever happening in Version 6. My layouts are designed for both Windows and Mac so it is difficult (if not impossible) to format each layout with hard breaks.

I inheirited a layout from another user. Some of the date fields are left aligned and others are right aligned -- how can I change the alignment? The paragraph dialog that I'm familiar with for text fields does not appear for date fields. Can't find anything in the manual.

I am having a rather difficult time creating labels. Whether I use a predefined template or custom measurements, the results are always wrong. I end up having to tweak the layout to make the data fit. I have a receding hairline and can ill afford to start pulling my hair out. Has anyone else encountered problems generating labels? Hi, I'm interested in creating a layout, which can be displayed in edit mode and also displayed in read-only mode. A user wants a screen where they can only look - but cannot touch. I know you can set permissions for this, but one potential problem is that the user actually wants a button for editing and a button for new and a button for viewing. I'm trying to create a printing layout with two self expanding portals to take all the data they hold. I've been told that I should be using sub-summaries, but I can't get anything working. My book doesn't cover the subject in any detail. Does anyone know of a website giving a tutorial (hopefully with an example) so that I can try an understand this a bit better?

This is a stupid question, but I can't figure out how to change the text on the face of a button once it's been created. How do you do that?

I'm scripting a Find by going to a special layout, Enter Find Mode [Pause], having them key in the criteria, press return, and Perform Find. I'd like for the Find Mode layout to present a few options: namely, Omit, and {Replace|Constrain|Extend}, which I can check prior to executing Perform Find. I first tried creating a layout field that mapped to a global, formatted by radio buttons, etc., but in Find Mode the buttons are inoperative. I'm not surprised, since in Find Mode you're not editing a record, but I wondered if anyone knew of a way to do what I'm trying to do? Many thanks, Chap

I am new to FileMaker Dev 7, so please excuse me if this seems like a stupid question. I have a Custom dialog window pop-up when a certain condition is satisfied. I am trying to insert a field name within the body of the text in the Custom Dialog window. For example, if a person selects an item that is assigned to another person, they get the message "This item has already been selected by another user." However, I would like the Dialog to state "This item has already been assigned to <<FieldName>>."

I have a comprehensive address database and I am trying to create a label printing solution. My problem is that occasionally it would be nice when printing to a predefined label sheet such as Avery layouts, to specify how many blank spaces to skip based on a variable field. This way a sheet that has already been used and has several spare labels is not wasted. I am sure that this could be done by creating a script which creates several blank records in the found set, sorts them so that they appear at the top and then deletes them after printing. Does any one have any suggestions on a better way of doing this?

I have a TEXT field, where user adds the Body of a memo. I am unable to allow the users any ability to change the formatting of the text neither the indenting facility. The file has restricted access. Full Access works fine, but the with restricted access (no Deleting, exporting etc and no layout/scripts etc) there is no format tool available? What am I doing Wrong? Hey, is there a way to make a list show up with a background fill on every other line? I thought I ran across this once, but it could have been from one of my fantasy trips to perfect Filemakerland. Thanks

I have one portion of a solution which lists groups of which a person is a part. The groups are listed in another table, with a join table to connect them. There are multiple groups, and each person can be a member of multiple groups. I display the groups in the people table with a portal. I also use a sub-summary to generate a report of group members. If I want a list of only one group, I do a find on the group number in the portal, then script the appropriate sort and switch to Preview in the report layout. When reworking a database -- say, moving a table from one file to another, or moving a task layout to a new table-group -- it's often necessary to redirect a portal on an existing layout, or to duplicate a portal into a new setting. As it is now, each field within each portal must be separately re-directed, right (except when I can simply substitute tables at the relationships diagram level)? Hello! Thought I'd start off by asking a basic question. In layout mode, is there a way to select an object THROUGH another object in front of it? There's gotta be a way. Is there a way?

I've got a mess of fields laid out vertically. Is there any shortcut for changing all of their heights at once? (e.g. from 20 pixels to 14). How about for compacting them vertically so that the bottom of one field coincides with the top of the one underneath? Format Painter seemed the way to go for changing the heights, but I can't figure out how to apply it to a group of objects. (I'm in OS X) I've also tried using the Size box, Alignment, and Field Format without luck. Thanks, Chap

I'm realy have a big problem, i need to insert a table in my database, i tryed to made a link with excel, but, the interface between the 2 programs are realy slow, so the solution maybe will be build a table like a speadsheet directly in FM 6 layout. Not sure if this is really a layout questions, but... Is there a way to not show the close, zoom and minimize (red, yellow, green) buttons in a filemaker DB in OSX? I've got students using a DB and I want to make sure they don't accidently close the window. Thanks.

I am building a "Ticket Reservation" database and would like to make a seating chart. Something that has the physical layout showing each in the auditorium, and a status (maybe red for sold, green for available) of each seat. The database contains a one record per seat, each with the seat number (e.g. A 107) and status (Sold, Available). I can easily add fields as necessary. Does anyone have a clue how to do this?

I have a legacy database in 5.5 that I need to add a checkbox field. I totally forgot how to get rid of the field border but still make the checkbox border appear. Is this possible? Seems like it should be. Thanks!

I'm attaching a screen shot of a record in browse mode. I'm having a terrible time getting things to slide properly when I preview/print it. I hope it's somewhat obvious how I want it to look: The line items should shrink upwards. They do. Everything below the line items should slide up, maintaining their positions relative to one another. I'm referring to the two column-totals (3) and the Subtotal, and everything beneath it. The Print Date is in the footer and should stay put. The stuff on the right in the gray sidepanel should not print. Can anyone give me any tips on making nicer looking layouts. I rfere to background colors. I seem to be stuck with just the pallette colors. I want to have options, like a metal looking layout, order shimmering green. Any tips?

newbie with a sliding problem. I have a form that imports through 15 various portals to make a summary report. Within all the portals, they slide up if no information is included. In preview, most of the portals slide up to eliminate blank space between portals as well, except for the first two portals. I have checked numerous times to confirm that all portals are formatted the same exact way, and yet I still get blank lines for the first two portals even when there is no data presented. Any ideas??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to put a merge field into a global text field? On my "estimate" layout I have a scope field that copies a global field on a different layout. I would like info from other fields in the estimate record to be included into the global field via merge fields. Is this possible?

I have an invoice with a portal showing sales of CDs and single images. Some of the invoices go over 2 pages and I have just about mastered the sliding and printing to get rid of extra space. The problem is when an invoice goes over more than 4 pages, the lines of the portal start showing half on one page and half on another. is there a way to stop it? Thanks!

Hi, I was told by someone that I can take a snap shot of a layout and display it in a field. Basically what i want is to offer a small preview in a layout of the larger printable layout. Is there a way of doing this? I am making a field with a large amount of text that has been formatted through scripting. It is basically a menu comprised of different fields combined into one. I want to put a smaller version of the field in the editing window, but when i do, the text is the normal size and i want it to be a full page in a small field. Hi - I am using FM with a barcode creation plug-in to create inventory labels - labels with a product's name, SKU and barcode. Unlike address labels, where I would want one of each record, I have multiples of each label that need printing (and not necessarily the same number for each record.) The labels are printing on full sheets rather than spool-fed individuals, so if I simply specify a number of copies of a single record to print - let's say 15 - I'll be wasting a half of a sheet of labels each time. I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas for how to deal with this - for instance a script that uses the number in my inventory field to specify how may of…

Is there any way to have one layout set to Portrait and another to Landscape?

Here's what I'm doing. I have a properties database (real estate). The main output from this database is a sell sheet. I have fields like TITLE, SHORT DESCRIPTION, MAIN DESCRIPTION, PHOTO 1, PHOTO 1 CAPTION and so on. I also have 10 fields titled: BULLET 1, BULLET 2 and so on. But some of these bullets get long (and thus wrap) and I would like to have the second and third lines to indent: (this doesn't actually show it indented here, but you get the idea)
