Importing & Exporting

Getting data in and out of FileMaker.

  1. Started by Barrettb,

Generally I think FM is greatest thing since sliced bread......until... I have a file.dbf on a server used by server side appications. Needed to add some text to several records in one field. In this specific case; a "keyword" field for a search algo that uses the file. Downloaded the dbf file. No import function or open function. FM converts it to FM format; ok I'll go with that... I add my data to the desired field and records with Import|Match|update Made a tweak with the great built in Find/Replace function. Looked for Save As dbf NOT File Export as DBF Did this as unsorted and all fields in original table order. (can't remember if it wa…

Now what im wondering is if you are able to import a folder of images into the one record if so how?. I know the option of importing a folder of images into new individual records but not the same one. Just wondering is there a way around putting each picture in individually cause that is just gonna take years. Thanks Nick.

HI, I've actually been using FM Pro since the 80's, but only in a limited way. never became a Jedi, so to speak. Anyway, its tax time, and I downloaded my csv file of all my Paypal purchases and income. Unfortunately, the brilliant minds at ebay (paypal's new owners) didn't put the "Paid" and "received" amounts in two different columns. What do they give me? One column of payments and receivables, the payments showing a "minus" to let me know that a payment was made. How nice. However, I uploaded this csv file into Filemaker 5.5 ( i guess i better upgrade cuz 5.5 wouldn't import a csv file). For my taxes, i'd like to show what is INCOME in this …

Hi everyone, I am building a database which will contain multiple .jpg or .bmp images for each record. I built two related tables. The first table is for the data entry part of the database, and the second table is for the images. The two tables are related by a serial number which is generated by Filemaker. Each record's images reside in their own folders. So I only need to import one folder per record. Is there a way to import the images directly into the related table and assign them the serial number so that they point to the record I created? When I use the import folder script, the imported images do not get linked to the original record. t…

I am designing a soccer club database. It is structured to have only active data, in other words, the teams for this year will have the same players as a default for next year's teams, and will be edited accordingly. That means that there will be no history of the teams from previous years. What is the regular approach in this case? Is all the information exported to another table/ excel sheet at the end of the season/ year? Is it an automated script that the user can perform, or is usually done by the db administrator/ developer? Any other ideas that might be practical?

I'm using FMP 7. I have a folder of 180+ xml files, all with the identical xml format. I'd like to import all the records into my DB. I have made a script that has the import command. It allows me to add all the file paths for my xml files in the file path box which I have done. When I run the script, it only imports the first record. IF these were text files, I know I can use the batch import functionality. Is there a way to either import this batch or somehow loop through and import each file?

Using the template "registrations". The database consists of Events, and Contacts. I enter the Events in manually and import the Contacts from .txt files. All the data has come over successfully, in the correct fields. However, when I try to add the Events to the Contacts, using the "New Registration" button, it only works about 1/4 of the time or less. Sometimes it will add the event, most of the time it shows the list of Events, then takes me back to the Contact page without adding the Event. FileMaker tech support has not been able to help. Running a Recovery of the database did not help.

Hi Everyone, I'm performing a simple export from a Contact layout (three Contact fields with only 287 records). No matter which export I select (TAB, csv), it takes 5 seconds per RECORD! But if I select Save/Send Records As (Excel), it is done instantly!!? I had really hoped that the slow export would have been resolved in vs. 8. I am struggling to understand FM's theory on why it would take so much longer as an export! At this point, unless I can figure out how to speed it up, I'm considering ditching exports entirely. But it is sad to have a feature which is almost worthless to me. Can anyone explain why there would be such a speed difference? Or am I doi…

I am trying to figure out how to import the file each week and identify those employees who have left the company (1 report), & new hires (2nd report). I am working on a database for a company to manage contacts, and I do not work anywhere near their offices, therefore it is all done remotely. I have finished one version of it, and they have started using it. But how do I create new improved versions that I can email to them, and they can install WITHOUT losing the records that they have created? The long way around this would be to have them email me their current version and I work on that, but this means a disruption in their ability to use the database. If anyone has any idea if i can do this then please give me a shout!!

I'm having an issue with FM8 Advanced having an issue importing CSV. For any database created under 8, the CSV import gets hosed. Looks great in the import dialog and I can preview every record just fine, however the actual import does not match the preview. Basically the first record imports perfectly, the second record imports the wrong data (about half way through the second record) and this just ripples through the entire file. For one of hte problem imports I get 503 records when I supposed to get 963 records. This does not happen in any of my databases upgraded from FM 7 to FM 8 - they still import fine. Same issue occurs on both Windows or Mac no matter…

I want to export, to a text file, a report with sub-summaries. My db has 2 tables: Companies and Products. The report is from Products, grouped by Companies. Header - information from globalHeader field; A variable separator (let's say for now three carriage returns); 2. Sub-Summary (leading) - information from related fields in the Companies table, separated by another variable sepa…

Hello, I'm importing from a MySql to FileMaker 6 using Actual Technologies' ODBC driver. Works good. The problem is a timestamp field(column) in MySql is automatically formated to a date format (mm/dd/yy) when it gets in FileMaker. Is this being done by FileMaker or the Actual driver? The FM field is a number field; or it can be text field. Either way the MySql format is automatically changed to the FM format. The MySql timestamp format is yyyymmddhhmmss. I need it to import into FM in the same format. Thank you, Omer

If not, can I "trick" Excel to thinking they are seperate fields by exporting the data with either a tab or quotes around data. Like this: "data","data2"? How do you get filemaker to allow quotes or tabs in calculations?
