    Hi all, looking for a bit of help and was wondering if anyone here could provide some answers! I have a columnar list, and with it I have summaries after several types of sorts. All of these summaries are to appear, and contain (basically) the same information. Obviously, if the sorts have a lot of data to work with, and some distancing appears, then I want to have each of these summaries appear. However, if I have just a single item, is there any way I can go about just ignoring summaries for single items? Thanks a lot! Jim

  2. Hi there - Fairly new to FM Forum but have used it in the past and you guys have been great in helping me understand where I was going wrong! My problem now is a 'letter' page written to clients that include certain fields from a 'main' overall page. Such as Dear 'John' thank you for your call . . . your quote is 'Quote 1' and the total cost is 'Cost1'. My problem is when I add the field 'client first name' how do I add a comma after his name?? Also when I have a 'project name' inserted and then need to insert another field such as 'on this date' how do I close both together without any gaps??   3. Ok. I may be confused here so feel free to correct me. So far I've always used portals to show related items to the main one. This is all good and it works for me. Now I face a different problem. I'd like to have a portal of records from one database (like a list view) where items can be checked and then two addditional boxes in the same layout: 1.-A "detailed" box that shows all the stats for the selected item in the portal. 2.-A smaller list that shows the items that have been checked in the main portal. I am running a script from a button within a portal. this shows a dialogue box containing the contents from a related record (using Troi's Dialogue Plug-in) Two other very similar scripts (which are NOT activated from within the portal) work fine, and enable me to view both the contents of the dialogue box and an important field in the current file at the same time. One of the problems I have run into is how to setup FM so that it will adhere to their rigid chart template. Here is the situation: I have 2 tables: "Policies" and "Beneficaries" On table 1 "Policies" I have a portal linked to "Beneficaries" on this portal you can fill in name address etc... things like this... I have a contract that only allows for one beneficary at a time on it...SO if I have lets say 2 portal rows each one being a beneficary..Is there a way to print the same contract, but have it replace the beneficary each time it prints until there are no beneficaries left...there could be more than 2.. I'd like to be able to categorize each photograph in a record with a user-editable pull down menu value list (i.e. landscape, seascape, portrait, etc.). There is now so much stuff going on in the database that I want to re-do the layouts. I was looking, in particular at the status area.     Hi all, I'ma relative newbie at FMP so bear with me if I'm not referring to things in the official FMP language. : ) I have a db (or is it referred to as a table or file here?) that has two drop down list.   23. I have a database of Pages in a photo catalog, and images on each page. I need a report that has the page number in the catalog page number in the title, then the items that will be on that page in the body. I got it mostly done by putting the page value in a sub summary (when sorted by TempPage). The problem is that when there are more records for a page than will fit on one page, the second page does not have the page info at the top of the page. I tried putting page number data in a leading grand summary, but that just puts the page number of the first record at the top of the page and all data below.   28. I'm creating a text field which will generate a text flag via calculation that indicates all of the line items in my portal meet a certain criteria, (ie. "complete" status of related purchase order records from my related purchase orders database). I tried the following calculation but it is generating the text flag if ANY of the items meet the criteria rather than if ALL meet the criteria: Case(PurchaseOrders::POStatus = "Complete", "All outstanding PO's are completed") What can I change in my calculation, or what other approach can I use?     Hi all: I'm just working on a project in FMP7, and find that a couple of my portals are displaying very strange behavior indeed. Every now and then I'll reopen the project and find that the fields in a portal are no longer defined correctly. The layout is right, but the actual field definitions have changed. Granted, I've been fiddling with some relationship definitions, but the changes only manifest themselves when I close and then reopen the file. I have yet to try to replicate this behavior on purpose due to lack of time, but wondered if anyone had seen this sort of thing? -Stanley

From the text I import I want a layout with just profile name once where auditors can click on the profile and view new profiles. i thought about using buttons to reference searches however new profiles may show up at anytime.     I need to convert a paper flowchart system of asking questions to Filemaker Pro. This is for a family Tech Support. The system would need to be able to ask a question by the Tech Support.   40. Hi All! I am a newbie, and currently having some trouble. I have a database with two tables, Clients and Orders, which have relationships defined upon the fields name and address. In the orders table I have a clients field, which operates via a dropdown menu with the values from the clients table within it (I have done this via a value list).     Hi all: I've got this hideously difficult page-layout problem that I've been working with for quite a while now. The client has one layout for the first page, another for the last page, and a third for any pages that go in between. The body is a list of items, and I'm printing from the file with the data in it.   50. I am using calc fields as containers to have dynamic buttons. My graphic is made in FM7 (simple figures using the rectangle, circle and line functions). When inserting this graphic into the Repeating container field used as the graphics "bank", my Calc field container displays a warped graphic. I've tweaked the crop, reduce and enlarge functions. I've changed the dimensions of the Calc field container and the repeating "bank" container field, all without help. What am I doing wrong? Thank's in advance.     Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to change the layout of a portal so that it laid out across as well as down. In other words, I have a layout with a portal into another file which is related via a code. The portal shows a container (containing an image file). What I want to do more than anything is to have this in a 4x4 format rather than a 1x8 (ie, I want to be able to display the images like thumbnails on a contact sheet. Is this possible at all?   55. Hi, I have a field that is formatted as a pop-up list and displays values from a value list. Users are supposed to select one of the values from the drop-down menu; however, sometimes they type in their own values. How can I avoid this? If I create reports based on those values a lot of unknown/entered by the users values appear. I can't really use radio buttons because I have more than 20 values in the list. Is there any way to make users select values from pop-up list and at the same time not to allow them to type or modify those values? Thank you!

    Can anybody offer a hint or trick for printing 2 (of many) text fields sideways? I use FM to fill in the data on a pre-printed form which has recently been revised to include social security numbers along the left edge in a sideways orientation (so that the numbers run vertically along the edge, "top" to the edge). Only thing I could find in FM Help was for Asian text rotation--not a help. Any suggestions? I don't need to print this form very often, so even a clunky workaround would be welcome.

    I have portal only one row (scroll bar active but transparent) and I have buttons Next/Previous/First/Last to move forward and back through the questions in the portal (using script Go To Portal Row [...]). This works fine except the first time going to the layout - person needs to click NEXT twice before it works (understandably, I guess, since there was no 'previous.') But another problem ... Person needs to be able to edit the questions - access to each field - but every time I click on the portal (except specifically into a field) the whole thing lights up and tries to select. CustomerData is customer contact information, billing address, shipping address, etc. ItemSales is purchase information So when I view CustomerData I can see their purchase activity from within the portal.     How do I set up a layout so that I can enter multiple records on one screen. I have a database where we enter sample records based on common data such as customer, address, date etc. Samples are submitted in batches of 10 so I need to be able to enter all the records on one page. The Customer Name etc fields will be common to all the records so as opposed to entering all the records on a seperate screen by creating a new record for each I would prefer for ease of entry to enter them all on the same screen.     I'm assuming these aren't possible. Say I have one layout with certain content, then I have a script go to the next layout. If I set the background colour of the second layout to transparent, presumably it just shows a white background, and not the contents of the previous layout. Is that a feature in filemaker 7? I'm assuming there aren't any plugins to change this as the FileMaker layout system seems a pretty integrated and hardcore aspect of filemaker. Is it possible? Just to save copying a section of layout objects into 20 other layouts every time I make a change. Thanks

    How can you show a field in a layout that comes from another unrelated database. I have a file with 5 tables, 3 of which have relational links to each other and 2 which are stand alone. When building a layout on one of the related tables I am allowed to add a field from on of the unrelatied stand alone tables. However, in browse mode the field says '<Unrelated Table>'. Why do they give you the option to add unrelated table fields but not show the data from them. I was under the impression that there had to be a related link to a table before you could view it's data (and add it's fields to your layout). Any ideas??

  66. I have a donor table with customer code, name, etc. When I'm entering donations, I start by entering the customer code. However, many people send in checks without sending in our voucher (on which is their code). We need to do a lookup on the name in order to find the code. I created a pop-up list that included the name field as a second field with the code, and sorted by the name. In FMP 6 and earlier, if you started typing the letters of the name, the cursor would pop down to that name in the list. With FMP 7 that doesn't seem to work. You have to scroll down and look for the name in the list, which is far less efficient. Any suggestions? Am I doing something…

    I'm confused as to why this is so tough, but I seem to be going around in circles with this dang conditional pop-up menu. I on the one hand have a movie database that has movies divided into "Current" and "Archive." On the other I have a theater database where I want to have pop up menus containing only the "Current" movies. Seems like I want to have a 1). relationship where I find all the movies, and then 2). a value list where I trim out the "Archive" movies. But I seem to be running around in circles getting either nothing in the list or all the movies in the list. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much...

    Morning all I am working in a db that uses a pop up list of customers in alphabetical order(about 50 customers) What I would like is to be able to go back to the part of the list I was working on rather than back to the start of the list which seems to be the default. eg if my last customer was called filemaker the next find would automatically return to filemaker rather than Abbacus which is the first customer on the list. When I copy a field to the 2nd database, the link to a particular value list does not stay with the field. . When Creating an index on a text field for relational purposes, filemaker indexes the first 20 characters of each word or the first 60 characters of the key, so when you might be concatenating two (or more) words, you can exceed the 20 characters per word limit, but if you put spaces between the words, you are likely to run into that problem and you get each word in your index. So if we put spaces between the words, the 60 characters limit is the only problem for use bigger key in our relation. Did anyone know what is the limit in FM Pro 7 Is same or something bigger...?     Just got my copy of FM7 Dev this past week--moving all the way up from FM3--which didn't have portals (I think they arrived in v. 4?). I'm beginning to figure out some of the "ins and outs" of portals (pun only partly intended;), but I have a lot of new stuff to figure out here. Since there are no FM7 books on the market yet, would a FM6 vol. be useful to learn the portal system? Or have there been substantive changes in how portals work in v. 7? I have a file (basic version attached) which parses a block of text into the individual words it contains (each word is made a separate record). These records/words are then sorted and a count of the occurrences of each word is shown by a subsummary.   86. Hello everyone. Little problem I'm having at the moment. I'm trying to 'lock down' a solution I've made by removing the status area. I have proper navigation within the solution. Whenever I remove the status area, the text I have within the header area gets.. 'changed'? It appears with the upper half of the text removed. If I put the status area back, the problem disappears. This happens to the text regardless of positioning within the header, regardless of header size. Can anyone shed any light on this? Is this a bug within FM7? (We are a publishing company and we use FM to handle invoicing, ad tracking, proofing, collections, etc).     FM breaks the object sliding capabilities found in earlier versions. If you have fields that span multiple pages (such a descriptive text fields) you could set the height of the fields to be say 3" each then place them on a layout (some of mine went 6 pages) then set the objects to slide up with "reduce the size of the enclosing part" set on so if the user did not write much in a field it would shrink: most of my pages when they printed would be 1 page long... occasionally 2 pages very occasionally 3 pages. In FM7 these pages print only the fields that appear on each page

    I am a beginner on FMPro, setting up a portal to view related records in an inventory from a related file. The records and the fields I specified show up OK, but there are no scroll bars at the edge of the Portal. I can click where I think they should be, and the records precess, but its almost like there are two sets of hidden bars as they skip around.     I must say I adore FileMaker for providing an intuitive, functional arrangement for Tables, Fields and Relationships. And the ability in Relationships to display nothing from the Table Occurence, only the join fields, or everything (providing a cute scroll arrow at the bottom). I don't display anything on them so they remain compact and only expand to work on certain ones as needed. It is so easy to create, modify and simply develop in such an environment.     I have two tables, Visits with a record for each patient visit, VisitCharges with many records for each charge for that visit. I have a relationship with the VisitID to the many VisitCharges (VisitToVisitCharges) and a portal works great to show all the charges for that visit. I then have a selfjoining portal from Visit to Visit that works great to show each visit in a horizontal fashion, each column shows one row and has a differing starting row. I then created a VisitToVisitToVisitCharge relationship. My problem is when I place the portal with the VisitCharges in this VisitToVisit portal, nothing shows.     I hope this is the proper forum for this: I have a simple sales report. Each line item summarizes the sales activity of a given dealer. There are no Body parts in this report. The summaries are sorted by dealer, then by total sales -- best performer at the top. Viewing the sorted report in Preview mode, the report works perfectly, with one maddening flaw. When (and only when) there are more than 500 to 510 records in the found set being summarized, the TOP dealer on the report shows incorrect summary totals-- Switch to single-record Browse mode and the correct totals are displayed!
