  2. I was hoping somebody could help me. Is there a way to log every time that a user accesses a record (reads it). I already am able to log all changes to records (an audit trail) but I need to be able to log simply opening a record in a layout. Is this possible to do? Thanks in advance for any help.

  3. Hi Is there an easy way to upgrade the FMP database at the end user sites, without having to save clone/empty files and then import them 1 by 1? I don't mean from FMP6 to FMP7. I mean just a new version of the same solution, but maintaining the users data. If there is no easy way, then has anyone tried making a batch file or similar? I have had a look at AutoIt www.autoitscript.com and it looks like it might be up to the job. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Cheers Simon

I am trying sort and create a report, records by the frequency of values descending from the most to the least occurances in a given field. Explanation: I have 70 records that have 20 fields describing them. I would like to sort the 70 records by one field according to the frequency that the values occur in the records.   6. I am building a database for shop work orders I would like to be able to attach shop drawings in PDF format to these work orders. I imagine I should be able to do this by inserting them into a Container Field. The problem I am having is that when I do this all I can see is a faint rendering of the original PDF document. Printing also produces just a fairly faint facsimile of the PDF. This topic has been raised on the Container Field part of this site but does not seem to get answered there.   8. there is a problem when one tries to loop within a portal. the problem is with the end-of-loop detection. Example script: Go to Portal Row [select; Perform without dialog; First] Loop ..... ..... ..... (your operations here) Go to Portal Row [select; Perform without dialog; Next; Exit after last] End Loop The above script enters an infinite loop and creates infinite new portal records in the portal.   12. I created a Portal record that has two calculations as fields. Both of them require a field that is manually entered; these fields are not with in the portal, and do not repeat themselves. Cost = (Length * Width) / 144 * Extend ( Three Quarter Hidden Field 1 ) Same for the other field. Lenght & Width are repeating fields.     Hi, I am new to the forums and have a concern with FMP 7. I have been learning to use it for a project at work for the last month now and so far love it. However, I have noticed something that appears to be a major bug in my FM. In the memory settings, I changed the "Save cache contents" from the default "during idle time" to every 10 minutes. I have found that neither of which are actually doing so. I had FMP running for 3 days straight and added and modified records during that period, and never once did it save the cache. I know this because in the properties of the DB file, the last modified date and time were the last time I had closed the file (3 days prior). …

    In the older version of FMP, if I click on a script button in a portal row,say row 5, the script excutes in the record that's in the row 5. In FMP7, the script always excutes in the record in the first row. This problem really bothers me. I'm think about adding a few more steps to the scripts. Maybe I can use a global field to store the portal row number, then go to the related records, then go to the record which record number equals the portal row number. I wonder if I did anything wrong when I converted the database to version 7 that could cause this problem.

  18. Hello All, I've searched the forums for any advice on conditional text color formatting, but it seems that this is a new option in FM 7. My question, is there a way to approximate this effect in FM 5? More specifically, I have a DB (call it DB_one) that will display names on a schedule table using data from DB_two (relationships have all been defined and work properly). I would however like to have these names displayed differently according to specific information from DB_two.     Hello, I have a lovely FMP6 solution that we previously used under Mac OS 9, over the summer we have moved to OS X. Now, every one of my scripts that Maximizes a window causes the resulting window to be displayed behind the dock. Filemaker has graciously acknowledged the problem, but offer no advice or recourse. This has been fixed in FMP 7 from what I can gather. Anyone found any workable solutions around this problem?? Thanks, Randy

We may have 10 of the same item, but each needs a different record because of different serial numbers.   22. I am still wokring on more reports. I found a useful thing to have on the reports is a little section that contains what exactly i'm looking at. For example, if I was looking up hours for a certain project between certain dates, it is useful to know what dates i'm looking between.   23. When importing photos, I choose link but the paths are coded as absolute. If I burn the fp7 database with it's linked photos to a CD, the images aren't found because it's still looking for my computer's partition/folder structure. I want to make it default to using relative paths when importing images or files into a container field. Any suggestions on where to set this?

I want to match the AD ID with the appropriate pdf of the ID and then using a button to download the file. Any help would be appreciated since I'm not even sure where to begin.     Hi, I have recently posted this to the filemaker website as a bug. In FileMaker 7, if you have a portal where it needs a scrollbar, and have the portal have no border in between the entries, and you scroll to the last entry. And then press the scroll bar again, it will show that last entry sliding up but it also is in its original position. This problem is resolved however if you have the portal with a border. Hope FileMaker fixes this bug, because it seems kind of dumb to be forced to have a border in portals.

  35. I am still working with FMP 4.1 on a Mac OS 9.2. I am working on a database that contains 14 layouts in which data is collected which ultimately needs to be output as a report in .pdf format. I currently have it set up where 14 .pdf documents can be generated and compiled into a single document back in Acrobat Distiller. However, on the Mac, inserting the pages does not do so in alphabetical order, so they have to be manually adjusted afterwards.   36. Hi I have need to display a shopping cart where the line item discriptons are from one to three lines long. When I place the items in a portal and leave room for three lines the spacing on the line items that are only one or two lines long have additional white space that i want to eliminate.   39. Hello, I am building a database in fp 6 and I was hoping to get some feedback at the planning stage rather than when I am pulling out my hair. Data will be entered into 5 separate forms and will be captured in 1 filemaker file. I am planning on creating the 1 file and then making portals in 5 files all pointing back to the master file. I am choosing this method because changes made in either file will show up in the other file and the data in the master file should export successfully.   44. I am a new user to Filemaker. I have FM 6, which I brought two months before FM7 came out. I want to move my contacts from Palm Desktop (Windows XP)to FM 6 on Windows XP. I converted the contacts in Desktop to CSV. I choose Contacts as a template. However, a lot of fields are missing in Contacts, such as "country."   46. I'm generating a report where I'm Summarizing data by Month/Year. The problem I'm having is the dates need to correspond to our company's fiscal calendar. So something with a date 7/1/2004 would need to go under the month/year 06/2004 (since according to our Fiscal calendar, that item happened in "fiscal" June). Say I have a field called 'names'. I want to find all records that have the same value in the name field. I hope that makes sense, here is another illustration.   51. I'm working on a fund-raising app for a non-profit group. They want to keep track of donations, pledges, etc. They've designed the DB, and I'm building it for them. However, on gift entry, there's one layout for gifts, no matter the type. I have a menu for type: pledge, pledge payment, matching gift, etc. I have a summary field on the gifts db that totals all the gifts by each person. So far, so good.   59. Hi, I am exporting FMP data into another program which cannot handle any carriage returns. One of the fields has tons of carriage returns in it: some of them are at the end of the text, some in the middle of it, eg. University of Blah Department of XYZ I have tried using the substitute function to replace all carriage returns with spaces, and it works for the ones at the end of the text but not those in the middle. Can anyone help?? I have already tried the FMP experts email list, but no joy there so far. The only person to respond couldn't understand why returns in the middle of text should be any different to those at the end.

  61. I have designed a two page layout (approx 130 fields) Page one (a proposal) can have up to 2 items listed. Each item consists of 14 repeating fields. Is there any way I can mark only one of the two items (with it's corresponding 14 repeating fields) carried to the page 2 layout (a factory order form) IE: Even though the Proposal lists two items, one may be in inventory and only the other must be factory ordered.   62. Seems that once I convert a file from 5.5 or 6.0 to ver 7, the visuals on screen are too large...by about 25%. I adjust for this by having a script set the viewable screen size to 75%. I'm sure this is the incorrect way to adjust for this but it is a temporary fix. My question is two fold. 1. What is the "standard" screen resolution I should be using? 2. I am trying to create a quote software for my company whereby I have created a unique ID# when the clients name is entered then you switch layouts and enter a room name and then you enter individual line items into a portal under this area. Then you enter a different room name and enter new items in the portal (etc. until you have entered all of the room and items necessary). My problem is keeping the unique ID# populated with the current unique id# in the room layout so that the room names are related to the current client.     I have files which I need to store for 10 years or for ever. If it's for 10 years, file storage will end 12/31 ten years later. Is there a formula which gives me based on the "end"-date of the content of the file (say i.e. October 10, 2004) either an expiry date 12/31/2014 (it must be 12/31...)or - if its for ever - a date like 12/31/2999??

  66. Version 4.1v3 Status area Layout List. I work on several PC's all with FMP version 4.1v3. While in Layout mode With that Status area displayed the top button will list all the layouts I am using. Problem on some of the PC's the Layout list is in a column and on the other Pc's the list of layouts is accross the screen. Question: How do I change the setup option so that I see the layout list in a column as I have so many layouts that when they are displayed across the screen I can't see the layout name of the layout I want to select.

  69. Hi all, Me again! On the hunt for some sort of table/chart/matrix listing interoperability between various flavors of FMS and FMP (client). For example, I have it in my head that FMS3 works with FMP3 and 4. And surely FMS5 works with FMP5. But does FMS5 work with FMP3 and 4? How 'bout Servers 6 and 7? For the curious, here's the "why"...   72. Hope someone is on at the moment (or soon)... I've done something dumb and can't get out of a validation loop. I have a zip code field defined as a required value. In experimenting with some other matters I created a portal that allows the creation of records in that file--but I didn't put in a zip field--nor had I yet added a delete row button. Now I have a record that I can't complete (no zip field) and can't revert or delete. I *do* have another window open for the same file, so I can access ScriptMaker. I'm using FP7 to connect to a file hosted by FP7 Server hosted on OS 10.3.3 The layout I was using was a business letter had a global container field that was supposed to be displaying a graphic (a signature) that was meant to slide up/down with the text of the letter.   75. I've been using Filemaker for years and always used the copy/new record/paste methodfor creating additional related records in a related database. This always bugged me because you would loose whatever you had on your clipboard. Then, I learned the portal trick (goto field, goto last repetition, set field). That is certainly better but it still requires portals in the UI that we don't want. I'm wondering if anyone has found anything new that makes this any better that doesn't require spurrious interface items. Thanks for your help! Eric

  76. Is there a way to NOT use portals if I want to have multiple records for the same ID shown? An example: I've got a participant number. Each participant number is unique. Each participant can have more than one appointment, but they may just have one. I'm trying to design a summary layout. I'm using the participant table to show most of the data but there are other tables from which I'd like to pull out data. As I said, each person can have more than one appointment but I can't figure out how to get the layout to show me more than one row if I don't use a portal. Is this the only way to get a repeating field?

  77. I have a database that is being used on both Mac OS X and Windows NT 2000. In one of the tables I have an 'insert file' button. This allows the user to insert a .pdf file in the database stored as a reference. Here's the problem: When a Mac user uses the insert file button, other Mac users can access the file fine, but when a Windows user tries to access the same file, a 'file not found' error appears. The exact opposite is true if a Windows user is the one who inserts the file. I know about hard wiring file paths for individual files.   79. Hello, I have a self join relationship that I use to find a value in a field that the user requests. This all works great, except when I export to either XML or Excel. My numbers are not formated. They are just like I entered them. I have it relating to a layout were the numbers are formated and I have make sure the check box is checked to pass on the formating to the export. This is driving me crazy, the same export procedure works great if the export does not need to be related by a self join. What am I missing. Thanks for your help on this.

    Hello, I develop database applications using FoxBASE+/mac 2.0.1. This is a very very old database system that is nearing the end of the road (even though it works in Classic.) In looking for other solutions I am also considering FMP. Can you point me in a direction or give me your comments on this issue. Does anybody have experience in porting FoxBASE to FMP? I am having a problem with a calculation that is not working on the repetitions of a repeating field. it is to track a magazine subscription info. it works like this: 1. a date is entered in the 'invoice paid date' field 2. a field called 'first sub issue' then looks up the next value in another table which has all the dates for every issue published. Client's DB performance (server 3.0 on NT/client 4.0 on NT) was fine for 6-8 years and suddenly it's unusably slow.   92. Any tips on troubleshooting this one? (I'm prob. doing something wrong...) I have a field validated and entered with a value list (pop up list) as either Yes or No. I can find based on those values manually with no problem, but when I try to script it, I get an error message, "No valid criteria." In the Find step of the script I specify "Perform Find [Restore]" amd specify: Finances::cleared: ["No"]. ('Finances' is the filename; 'cleared' is the field name.) I've also tried it with: [="No"]. I would like a summary of my sorts to appear in the margin. I've set up a database in our solution to record magazine titles, and we've been putting low-res cover scans (30kb at most) into container fields and serving these images using the web companion. I'm worried about the size of the database though. There's about 150 records with these images but the database file is about 8MB in size already. We'll be looking to probably treble that record number. 1) I was wondering if there was anyway to get the db size down?   98. I have a database that I call Directory. We use this Directory to find which database a record is in. Currently I have to import records from all of my other databases manually so that the directory will be up to date. I would like to be able to enter a new record into any of my databases and have that record automatically show up in the directory. I think that I could probably get it done with a portal, but so far have not had any luck. Is that the best way to accomplish this or should I use an alternate method?     Hey guys, I am a die hard MS Access man, but recently heard about FileMaker and am interested. I have a large database that contains a subjects photo and basic information with subreports containing more photos and detailed information. My questions are this, Can FileMaker handle large number of photos and info per person like Access? Do the databases become huge and bloated? I currently store only the links to photos in my databases to keep them very small and easy to work with? Any help is appreciated before I drop any cash. I have the trial version now to tinker with.
