Hi I have imported some old fm3-databases into fm5, most things work by now but references based on relationships don't. the usually consist of an entry-field on first database which is compared to a formula-field on the second (formula works correct, i tested). While does worked in Fm2, i dont know why not in fm5. would it be a different index- approach? some references work partly, i.e. if i put in the surname only it's ok, but if I write "Surname, Name" (delimited by comma like it worked in FM2) it doesn't work anymore would really appreciate help, tried so much for nothing ....

I am serving out FileMaker 5.5 sessions from a Microsoft WIN2K Terminal Server. When a new user starts her first session and launches FileMaker, FileMaker displays the first-run dialog that asks the user if she would like to create a new database, open an existing file, open a template, etc. At this point, the user can check the "no longer display this dialog" option so that she will no longer see this dialog in the future, but I would like to set FileMaker to default to never showing this first-run dialog in the first place, and instead take the new user directly to the normal Open dialog box. Does anyone know how to do this? TIA, Brian

Have been using FileMaker 5.5 on a Mac on our local network. This machine is dedicated to serving up our database here in the office. The last week or so the host keeps dropping off the network. In other words, when I launch FileMaker from one of the other machines in the office, choose open, choose hosts, there is nothing showing up in the list. If I go and quite FileMaker on the server and then re-launch it...it works fine. But within hours it disappears again. This is a frustrating one...I cant seem to find the problem. Also, as a side not, when the host computer all of a sudden stops publishing the database on the local network, it is still publishing it just fin…

ok we have FM Server 5 with 30 databases. i want to be able to host them on the web. we have people that access the files via a FM client to dataentry and regular day to day things. i want to have people access the information via the web. i have no clue what to do. it's not like there are any instructions. where do i put FM Unlimited? does it have to have all 30 programs open to view on the net? what about server? i am very confused. please help Peter

FileMaker Pro 5, Windows Platform. I live in Russia. Initially the database was made and the data were entered on a computer with regional settings "English (United States)". When clients have started to be connected to this database from computers with regional settings "Russia" all data in a database, filled in Russian have a not readable kind. If on clients computers to establish regional settings in "English (United States)" all will be good but so I can not make because many programs in Russian cease to work. I manage a multi-user FM solution over a LAN like most FMForum users here. I'd like to see if anybody has setup a successful chatting system or message board that allows users to communicate to each other. I'm envisioning a sort of popup window saying something like new message or something. I realize FileMaker Inc. probably didn't have this in mind at all, but I'm just curious as to how expandable FileMaker Pro really is.

I receive a fatal error each time I open Smart Publisher (Pre1). Running Win98, database resides on a NT4 server. I believe it is related to a TCP/IP issue but I am new to FM and have no idea how to begin troubleshooting this issue. Any insights or perhaps a reccomended pre1 specific newsgroup?

Can anyone tell me how difficult converting FMP Mac files to FMP PC files is? I developed a set of five related Macintosh that were for tracking donor activity for a small non-profit charity. I would like to clone them, and then convert them to a PC format for another non-prof. Can I even do this? Will all the field definitions, scripts, relationships, and layouts make the transition intact? This is all volunteer work for a charity. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Is it just me, but the new feature set in FM6 looks rather thin. IMHO this must be a missprint. Should be FM 5.6 Fields in Dialog boxes Constrain found set Digital Image import is this a joke? Any FSA members out there download their copy of FM6 from the FSA Members Only area of the FileMaker web site and try to update it with the 6.0v2 updater? I did and the updater won't work. It is looking for a file(c:WinNTInstaller47237f.msi) that is not on my Windows 2000 Pro box. Actually, the Installer directory isn't even on my computer. I read the doc that came with the updater and it stated that under windows you need the FM6 CD. Anyone know how to get the updater to run properly in this situation. I don't really need it, but I like to make sure I am using the latest version.

Got a serious problem when using 5.0 with share files on network (several fm5.0 install using the sames files) When trying to open the main file there's the error : "File may cause a general protection fault"... It's happen on each computers but not at the same time... One day it's the computer #2, another is #6... It'S never happen before with the same computers! I've been using fmp for years and I thought I knew it well, but... today I've found that a total summary field doesn't work properly. This happens with a shared database between 2 windows2000 PCs. The solution has been at work for years without problems but recently I installed win2000 to the "client" one. It must be something related with file sharing but I don't know how to fix it... I thought I posted this earlier today but found nothing here. Here it is again I have 5 computers 2 stations are imacs a 266imac which runs 5.5 400 imac which runs 5.0. 266 mt g3 with 768mb ram which is partitioned first partition runs 9.2.2 runinng 5.0 second partition runs OS X using 5.5 400 pb firewire with 384mb ram running 5.5 with OS X and 9.2.2 on second partition with first partition running 9.2.2 266 mt g3 with 384mb ram which I use as the server for filemaker running 5.0 Everything was runinnig fine with OS 9.2.2 then I went to OS X on the power book for learning purposes and then the 266g3 that is not the server I can op…

Hi. I am new to filemaker and don't really understand what it's all about. It has been suggested that we use filemaker to create reports. The thing is, the reports I am generating need to be viewable via the web. Is filemaker a suitable tool for this application? I can't seem to find any reference to publishing reports to the web, or anything like that. Thanks

We run FileMaker on Macs where I work and we've been considering switching to OS X as our main operating system, our problem though is that FM for OS X is a disaster. It seems a bit incredible that some of the things we noticed first-hand seem ridiculously simple... (but then again, we're not programmers). Like not having toolbars on the client's end, or not being able to start the server automatically (which we definitely need since the server is unattended 98% of the time). Is there a scheduled update for OS X specific issues? Having a near-flawless product under OS 9, we find it appalling that it seems so crippled under OS X.

Hi: I am new to FM5 web publishing , but I am aware that I have to have a permanent web connection in order for everybody to be able to see the database all the time. This is not an option for me. I am building a company web site with Interland (ISP) and perhaps there is a way to published the database im my web site so that everybody can see it. Is this possible? How do I go about it? I have a client who wants to know if they can place our program, done in FM55, onto an OSX server and then have it accessed by workstations using OS9. They are aware that they will need FMP Server, but they want reassurance that this configuration will work before making the purchase. Will this work? Any 'gotchas'? Thanks for your help.

So now that I've kicked my RH 7.2 installation to link the proper libraries and source compiled a version of the DSO to work on the latest Apache build, and have done /FMPro?config and got it to connect to the FM Unlimited 5.5 hosts... what next? Hi, Using FMP Server, we have an automatic back up of our databases. However, we can't connect to them from a web browser. Using FMP U, we can connect to databases from a web browser. A client trying to host some bound runtime files through Filemaker Pro 5.0. The host computer is running Windows 2000 When someone try's to connect to the host computer (win98) they get the flowing message "Order Entry.pit is currently in use and could not be opened. The file is single-user or the host could not be found on the network" All files are set to multi user and the TCP/IP is set Also when clicking the host button on the remote computer, none of the files show up. Hello. I think I may have some kind of problem that is bigger than the database or Filemaker itself. (I will paste the details from my last post below.) Today I removed FMPv3 as administrator from the add/remove in windows 2000, reinstalled it, restarted the computer, installed FMPv5.5, opened a clone from a saved file from April that hasn't been used at all since then, entered one record and had the same spell check crash. It just closed the program without warning. Sometimes you can spell check a record or two, or a word or two before it closes. As long as you don't use spell check, everything else in the database seems to work fine. I think I will open one of the templ…

I have 3 computers on an PC (new Dells) ethernet network 100T with one computer as a dedicated FMP host and the other two computers sharing files from the host. The operation of FMP 5.5 slows tremendously with TCP/IP. What can I do to speed network access other than going to FMP Server? I shouldn't need server yet right?

Currently I have 3 copies of Filemaker 5 unlimited which we purchased for a raic / lasso 5 set up. After a week of testing I realized that RAIC doesnt work as promised. Am I better of Upgrading one copy to FM 5.5 unlimited for the multi-treaded web comp.? Has anyone made the raic work with osx, lasso 5 and filemaker? Any please i can find or read instructions?

I'm not sure where to post this question so I'll try this forum. I have "lost" my toolbars and can not get them to "return" The View/Toolbars item is grayed out and none of my toolbars are displayed. I've verified all my document and application preferences with no luck and I do not have any scripts that use the AllowToolbars command. I am running a Mac G4 with OS 10.1.4 and FM 5.5v1. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

if i double click a FMP data file and switch to another process, FMP will launch then the dock icon will bounce forever with a dialog the FMP needs my attention... all i have to do is click the dock icon for it to stop. However, what is the reason it needed my attention... i opened a DB by opening it from the finder - it shouldnt need my attention - it should load in the BG. This is especially annoying if i have a DB as part of my login items in OS X - can't FMP get by without handholding?

I would love some help troubleshooting a frustrating problem. I am finishing a FMP v3 database in a PC environment. The file resides on the network server but is usually hosted by another machine since I am still making the final tweeks. (Occationally one other PC will be using it at the same time.) We just purchased Server 5.5 & 25 licenses but I want to fully debug the database before throwing in a new set of variables. We have had two recent power problems in the office that have resulted in damage to the database. I've had problems while using the web companion. Sometimes databases just close by themselves. I've experienced this on 2 different servers, and with filemaker 4.1 and now with filemaker 5 unlimited. The only thing I'm sure of is that it occurs when users are accessing the database via web companion. It happens when users have tried to search for a large amount of records, but its really hard to reproduce it. Any ideas? Will filemaker close a database to prevent an error, or if it runs out of resources? Any idea?

Hi - i'm trying to call a javascript function, embedded in a QT movie, in a frameset that is being served by FM Pro 5 - and it's reading the function and returning a 'page not found,' looking for the address res://C:WINNTSystem32shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#javascript:function(); - (not the function name) - the page works fine outside of the frameset, the javascript embedded in the qt calls the functions and everything works fine, but within the FMP5 frameset, nothing. any ideas? thanks dbcn

I was running FMP 5.0 Unlimited since Aug 01 without any problems, publishing about 7 databases on the web with custom pages I made. I recently upgraded to 5.5 Unlimited and Filemaker kept on locking up on the NT server that was hosting it. I then moved it to a Mac G3 running OS 9 and it will run OK for a couple of days, then lock up again. I can't seem to figure out what is going on by looking at the logs. Any ideas or suggestions?

I just purchased FM Unlimited and can not install FM WSC 5.5. When I launch the install I get a dialog advising that I need "root priviledges" and I should "log out of the current account and log in as root." I am the only user on the Mac and I am set up as Administrator. Where do I go from here? TIA for any feedback.

I installed the 5.5 upgrade yesterday on a Mac using OS X. A file I made in 5.5 has a generic icon and will not open unless I open Filemaker. An older file I opened in 5.5 now has a generic icon and will not open by clicking on it. I moved the data from one of the files to Excel, made a new Filemaker file, and imported the data back. Still a generic icon which will only open within Filemaker. Any suggestion as to what may be causing this? Or how to cure the problem?

I swear if its not one thing its another, a customer is running FM 5.5 and out of no where he's getting the good old "The Application Filwmaker has unexpectedly quit due to a type 1 error" Now this is an older thmachine with a G3 300 with 256 mg of ram OS 9.0.4 and nothing else running but the most current version of NetBarrier firewall (which has never given me problems) and FM ULTD with like 90mg of ram given to it ? Is Web Server Connector in version 5.5 better, than the s*** included with version 5? So far we have to program proper security for web served databases. Not it looks that the WSC in version 5 is next to useless piece of s***. We will be probably forced to develop our Security Filter with WSC functionality as well. Anyone with real live positive experience on Windows NT IIS platform?

Does anyone know of a way to get SQL Server to see a FMP DB? We tried creating a linked server to a DB through a FMP DSN but it wouldn't connect to it. I wasn't sure if there was something that I am missing. I did have all the plug ins turned on in FMP so that isn't the problem. Maybe this isn't even possible, I don't know? I would appreciate any input from someone who has had experience in this or something similar. Thanks, John

Just wanted to share the following: After installing FileMaker Pro 5.0 on a machine I would get this error: "FileMaker Pro could not be launched because of incorrect installation, missing system components, or insufficient memory. Please see the FileMaker Pro Documentation" The computer is a Dell just out of the box, and the FileMaker copy was working fine before on an older computer... I was called in to fix a problem. Not my original client. using latest OSX on G4 tower and Filemaker 5.5v2. to host (not server servion). Only 1 file and not many records. This file only accessed by two Mac OSx clients. Same machine is also hosting another very small filemaker file via web sharing plug in. They are sharing access to that database over LAN with Mac and Window web browsers. Problem is that database keeps getting corrupted. I went in and figured that they had system folder sharing and filemaker sharing both on and probably contention conflict. So I move files to non shared foolder and everything was working perfectly when I left. …

I have the same problem!! And stop saying that we did'nt configure it the right way. Our group is using my database for a long time in sharing and I never had problems (except for when FileMaker crashes for no reason). This time, a user was online as the Host, but a network problem arise and the connection was lost. Since then, everybody can use it as multi-user except for that person. We tried to uninstall and reinstall, without success. I realize that the problem was more important when that person logged on my computer and coud'nt open it! I have 4 Win/XP computers set to TCP/IP in network protocol. When I open the program on the HOST computer it says allowing multiuser over TCP/IP for each file it opens. When I try to open the host file it can't be found from inside FMP5.5 and if I link to the file directly in the shared drive it says "the file is single-user or the host can't be found on the network". I'm stuck what's going on? Why does it not show up on the host list and the network connection works fine as I can see all the files available? Any help is much appricatied Thanks

I'm working with FileMaker 5.5 and OSX 10.1.4 and evry times I want to startup FM he stops with an "unexpectedly quit" and I have to try several times to make it work. I'm making a database that will be used in v5.0 Filemaker, but I want to develop it in v5.5 because of the window resizing and other nifty features that make developing in 5.5 a bit easier. I have a few client FM5 here on Mac's OS 9.2 while Appletalk is on and they try to open FM they recieve an error stating that the maximum amount of users is on. My users all have their own client and we have checked the serial numbers on each machine and there are no duplicates. These are for their own individual databases that aren't shared with anyone. If we turn Appletalk off we are able to open the application of course this is not a solution that will work for us since they use Appletalk to print. Any suggestions would be appriecated. Thanks. I am new to this forum and apologize if there is an easy way to look at archives, but I have a machine that is having problems with Helvetica. When I open Filemaker on it, the files that use Helvetica come up with the text in the fields garbled. It is only happening on this machine and I have replaced the System font several times, (which helps temporarily) but it keeps coming back. Anyone else had this problem? Thanks,

Hello All: FMsvr 5.5 (runningon a w2k svr) & FM pro 5.5. I want to secure access to our database hosted by FM svr, since everyone logs in as a guest. At the properties of server>Guest tab: require filemaker pro guest to login to windows domain is checked. However, when Mac user logs in , it'll ask for those credentials, which are provided but do not give access to DB. the users on the Pc is already logged so not sure whether this automatically counts for filemaker access, since they do get access. The credentials are those someone will use to log in to a share on a w2ksvr. I also want to secure access via the web by having a password…

Hi, I have created a database in FMP and I have 2 pop up menus one is comany name and the other is the size of paper eg:a1,a2,a3,a4,a5 but the sizes are all different to each company. So the question is, is there a way of selecting a company name and it bringing up all the sizes that relate to that company that I have selected in the comany pop up menu box. For example I choose Adidas as the comany the second pop up menu brings up all products that relate to Adidas On the next record I choose Nike the second pop up menu brings up all products that relate to Nike Thanks for any help Chris

Recently I have started experiencing problems with starting FM 5.5.2 and opening FM files in Windows XP Professional. It takes about 2 minutes to launch FM (I have a 1.8 GHz Dell with plenty of memory)and it sometimes takes even longer to open an individual file, regardless of its size. I have a 10-file solution that can take up to 20 minutes to fully open. Windows Task Manager reports "FM Not responding" while files are being open. Once the files are open everything works with no problem and the application is snappy. Any idea why it may be happening? Hi, I have a problem, I am creating a database and the database is going to be used to view photo's of jobs we have done, the photo's are held on a server. Thanks to those who helped me with questions to set up my donor database in FP5.5. It's been ticking along nicely and slowly grew from 1MB to 1.5MB over 3-4 months. But this month, the file size jumped to 4.2 MB! I haven't added much, a handful of new records and a small true/false field. No new scripts. I have compared the current version to my last backup a month ago and can't see any noticeable changes, apart from the size. Can anyone suggest a reason why this has happened? And better yet, how I can reverse it? I used to update my distant workmate by e-mail but the file has become very slow to mail over a 56k modem. I use a Mac G4 running OSX 10.1.3 b…

What is promp8? We have 2 computers peer to peer, one(98SE) with FM5, where the solutions are loaded, and another with FM5.5 (2000ME). The FM5 contains a file called Promp8. It is a filemaker application file, DOS name FILEMA~2.exe 1.89 Mb., same as FM5. It appeared a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be needed to open one of our databases. It is not picked up by a virus scan. Never seen it before!

I heard or read somewhere that with 5.5 you can store pdf's in a container. Is this true? Can you do the same with Word documents? On the Windows side I know you can insert objects and I guess I am wondering if maybe this feature has made it to the Mac in 5.5.

We have been having frequent crashes using FileMaker 4.0. I have had to recover data about 5 times this week. I need to track down the problems and I'm not sure how. We have 5 computers connected on a network all sharing the same files from the server. The data is contained in 7 databases. (One is just and employee timecard screen-not connected to anything else.) The bulk of data is contained within 3 databases with records numbering 19434, 62588, and 586. I think most of the errors are within one particular database. Hi, I have a simple FileMaker Pro 5.5 (Mac OS X) database containing sensitive personal data. Is it possible to save the database automatically in an encrypted format? Just setting a password is not enough, because then the data can still be read with any hex editor. The procedure that I'm following now is to save the database in an encrypted .dmg disk image; but there should certainly be easier alternative? Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks, -dd

I have just got my copy of FM Developer 5.5 and have been going through the manual. When I will install it I can choose between to keep my FM Pro 5.0 or upgrade to 5.5. My question is if there is some things that will malfunction if I develop in 5.5 when the users only have 5.0? If I have understood it right there will be some functions that only works in 5.5 but they are of minor consequence like the hand over a button. Is this right? Why I want the 5.5 version insted of my present verison is that it's in Swedish and I realy prefer a English version. The transaltion of functions and choice's isn't always crystal clear. //Henkan

Hello. I am trying to record a sound file from FM, store it in the container field (HardDrive is an option) and then playing it back from the same container field (or using script, insert automatically from Hard Drive into a container field). I know that FM invokes its own sound recorder when you click on the container field, but the recording time is 30 sec only. I am looking for some solution that will allow to record a sound file until I stop it and if it takes to involve a third party application, it should run on the background, prefferably. Any help is appreciated.

My boss has asked me to develop a solution to the following problem. We currently have a white board at work that we put magnets on which tell where a job is currently at in the department or what it is waiting on. For instance, lets say printing and desktop design are two of the topics. What he wants me to do is to enable a drag-and-drop solution so that everyone in the department can view a front-end where anyone can drag and drop job #1 button under column 1 which would be desktop design. I recently took on the volunteer position of Membership Chairman for a charitable organization. I purchased FM to use for mailing labels and membership lists. So far so good. A simple problem I have is how to count, then print the number of records in a given report. I have no trouble sorting and filtering the records, then printing and distributing various lists, but I'll be darn if I can find a way to put the total records in the list at the bottom. Any help would be much appreceated.

Two methods will accomplish this. Both involve the use of some kind of "flag" to indicate the status. This "flag" could either be a single field or could be the result of the data in several fields. You can use record level validation in Filemaker 5.5 and set the editing validation to only be allowed when the results of the lock status is equal to 1. (i.e. Flag = 1 or InvoiceStatus <> "Complete") You can also use an editing layout which is seperate from the browse layout. Can several users update a database at the same time? If I have, for example, if I have formatted a field as a pop-up list can it be updated by several uses? If a field is edited by a user would a second user get a message indicating that the record is locked? I am trying to create a report where the records are being grouped by a field. The report will displey the groups correctly only if the records are sorted by the field by which the grouping is done by. How can I sort the records automatically so the user doesn't have to sort manually? The report has to be done in preview mode and there if I insert a button cannot be pressed. Here is a problem. I am running a database on a Mac running OS9. For certain security reasons I am using ApleTalk Protocol in the Prefs. (I dont want any access thru tcp/ip over the internet). Now this works fine for my local network users on OS9 machines. As long as I also set their prefs. to ApPleTalk, they can access the database. But no go from any machines running OSX. First off, there is no option to set the prefs. in FileMaker OSX to AppleTalk. I have as of yet not been able to get access to the database over the network from the OSX machine. Anyone else seeing this problem?

Unfortunately, having bought FMP5.5 and OS X and not being aware that the Dial Phone script step does not work I am now faced with ditching both and going back to FMP5 and OS 9x as my time recording system totally relies on this script. Does any one know of a workround. or have I just wasted money. Also does anybody know of a CLI and Voice Phone enabled modem for the Mac
