Importing & Exporting

Getting data in and out of FileMaker.

  1. Started by hemlock,

I am importing Excel data into just a standard inventory database (via Import from a file). The import works just fine. But I'd like to run some sort of validation when I import so that I can check any errors committed while in Excel; for instance, I have a uniqueness requirement on asset tag numbers that doesn't seem to catch duplicates upon import. I don't know what the best way to do this would be. If there is a duplicate validation option in Excel that I could use instead, that would be fine. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks and have a good day! Bob Lehner Hemlock Public Schools Hemlock, MI

  2. Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to export an appointment from a filemaker database field to MS Outlook? I read somewhere that it might be possible using DDE executes but I have no idea how to use this. I know that there are dedicated plugins out there, like Outlook Manipulator, but the problem is that this one is not a Filemaker 7 native plugin and only supports english fonts - I am Greek and I want the title and other information related to the appointment to be in Greek. I contacted Productive Computing and they say that I could pay them $150/hour to enter the Greek character set into the plugin or wait for a FM7 version whenever they decide to make o…

I try to find a solution to import vcf Files (plain text) into a simple FM7 address database. Anyone having experiences with the import of vcf files into Filemaker? I tried to write a little script doing that job for me. Does anyone have an idea how to split a single textfile that contains all the names and addresses into single records. Usually Tabs or commas are used to devide fields, in that case vcf records are marked by "BEGIN:CARD" and "END:CARD" within the textfile thanks for your help norbert

Hi, I wanted to export some data into a report made with InDesign 2. I couldn't use any of the export type options so I finally used the desktop snapshot feature to make image files with the data I wanted to export. I need to be able to export the information from Dealers with only the first Contact from the portal which will probably change each time we export. My idea is to create fields in the Dealer file for first and last names, email, etc. then create an export script that when selected will take the information from the first row of the portal for contacts and insert it in to the fields in Dealers. I have a database that I routinely have to export to sync with another application on a handheld unit. I've found that one field will consistently not export it's contents (text) in DBF or Comma Separated formats. The field ends up empty (i.e., as ""), save the occasional "0" inside it. The field exports correctly in Tab Separated and in MER formats. I have a work-around, but I'd like to find out why this is happening. This is a text field of two to five characters, and the field has a name of "Category," with a label of the same name. It occurs with both FM Pro 4.1 and 5.5 on Mac and Windows. Hi, I'm relatively new to scripting - and desperately trying to create a script in my main database that would import records (in the background) into 5 separate related databases from 5 different files. How do I prepare the field in the database to receive the data? I tried the usual setup, but I get gibberish in the fields. NOTE - in the Import Field Mapping dialog box, I can see the Japanese characters, but upon hittinng "import" the data is corrupted. Thanks in advance! FileMaker Version: 7 Platform: Mac OS X Panther

Hi, I have been unsuccessfully trying to upload a FM export to a departmental web site. It would only upload the first line. I found that opening the export on an XP machine and re-saving with Line Feed character fixed the problem. Can I get FM to insert this character into the export, or perhaps triger an Apple script that will do it? It doesn't take long to do it manually but I am trying to make it a 1 buton process in FM because I don't always run the export. David

I can't seem to just 'select' text across cells in a table or report like one does in excel (why not, it seems so fundamental?). The export text feature is longwinded if I want to quickly access 10 different classes and if I do the whole lot at once (grouped by class) there's no way to tell where one class ends and another starts. The only solution I've got is to export a report as a .pdf file (via Mac OS X) then select classes from there. Any help for a database newby would be appreciated!…

I am trying to script this procedure. When I save the script and test it, it continually opens the File Open dialog box. Even though I am importing from ODBC rather than from a file. If I press cancel, the script fails. I would be very appreciative if anyone knows how to script an import using ODBC and can help me out. Thanks! I'm wondering if there is an easy way to export field titles to a CSV? You know, the first line are the fields titles. I have 103 fields I need to export, I know I could set up a record number 1 and run a 103 line set field script that would set all 103 fields to the title (some of my exported fields are globals so that causes a problem I'll have to work out later). My guess is that there is an easier way to do this. This DB will be run on a weekly basis, therefore I need some sort of script for the user. Any thoughts? Thanks.
