Is it possible to sort a portal based on related fields? For example, if I have 3 tables: tblHotels (fields: key, name, rating) tblAmenities (fields: key, type) tmapHotelsAndAmenities (fields: key, hotel.key, amenities.key) If I have a layout based on the Hotels table, with a portal to the map table, which is populated with the Amenities type field, how can I sort based on the type field? I have created database for 2nd mortgages and have 3 main tables: Borrowers Investors Mortgages I have managed to get working to point of calculating the mortgage payments, etc. (amortization schedule) which creates "on the fly" up to 300 new records (via scripting) for each borrower. This script relies on showing all records and then deleting them before it creates a new amortization schedule. This is how I think i want it as it would get very big very fast for a lot of mortgages. I'm using Open URL, and the URL specifies an anchor within the HTML page. This is of the form "file.htm#anchorname". It seems that when this is passed to the browser, the anchor is missing from the URL. Any idea why? Thanks, Rick

Occasionally a field, or fields, will lose the ability to show the chosen field borders. A one pixel wide border will show as 2 pixels wide or might not show at all. Sometimes it is only one of the four borders of the field which will be incorrect. The field is not engraved, embossed or drop shadowed. The pen tool line setting matches the setup in the field borders setup. Duplicating the field will correct the problem. What is extremely odd is the field borders display correctly when viewed at 200%. This has been happening on Windows XP with SP2 and FM v7.03. Hi everyone, I have an inventory DB that has a part table, an Entry table and an Entry Line item table. The entry table has a portal into the line item table to enter purchase orders or invoices (parts coming in and going out). I have a layout in the line item table that sums up all the additions and subtractions in a sub summary layout that shows each part once and how many are in stock. What I want is to be able to show the user this information in browse mode. Is there a way to display only 1 line item of a part with a sum quantity without being in preview mode. I have a couple places where user needs to select a name/place from a very long list. I have put the list in a portal which filters via relationship with whatever they key into a global field outside the portal. Works pretty well, but you have to exit the field in order to see the filtered results in the portal. Showed it to the user and he says "can you make it narrow down the list while I type?" Lots of Windows dialogs in Windows apps do this so... it's expected. So is there a way to do this? Is there some kind of looping script that might respond to each key stroke in the filter field? I can see from previous posts that duplicate a record an its related portal records is possible. I was hoping that someone might have a sample script. I have invoices that sometimes need to be duplicated and adjusted. I have all of the records related by an invoice number. Each invoice typically has two related records. I know this type of question has come up before but I am still very new to this and I can't seem to figure out how to make it work. I am designing an Order Entry Database for my Fabrication Job Shop. I have Two Fields in the Order Entry Table. Field One is "Sales Type" which includes Fabrication, Rolling, Stress Relieve, Burn Outs, and Miscellaneous which appears as a pop up menu from a Custom Value List. I have a Patient and a Visit table. Each Patient has 0-n Visits, and the two tables are linked thought Patient_ID. In the Patient table, there is a portal to display the Visit Information. However, in the Patient table, when I change the Patient_ID, the Paitent_ID in the Visit table is NOT updated automatically, therefore, this updated patient doesn't have visits any more while it had visits before the change. Do i need to go to the visit table to manually update the Patient_ID there too??? Please help. Jie

Hi guys, I thought I would post something that has been a little gem to me since I discovered it. Copying Portal Rows and adding new portal records without having to add it to the bottom row of a load of line items. This is only a little discovery but it's made layout formatting and copying of portal information a breeze for me. When you have created a quote or something and you are doing another quote for someone else with the same items, it would be nice to copy the data from one portal line item to a new one. (Version 5/6): I have created a Relationship between two of our files. I sorted the Relationship - and tested it with a Portal. Works great, newest records first - Descending Order. When I use the Relationship to create a Value List, the results are NOT sorted. Comes out in creation order - oldest records first. No obvious way to sort in the Value Lists. Anyway to ensure the Value List (using a Relationship) is Sorted?

If a layout element will not show up in preview mode, does that mean that it will not be printed if I print the layout? Right now I have a portal that displays the proper data in browse mode but does not show up in preview mode. Edit: I also have some lookup fields that are showing up as "?" in preview mode, but work correctly in browse mode. I can't test print ATM.

I would like to create a layout with the detail (body records) numbered sequentially starting from #1 on each page. There is a sub-summary which causes the page breaks. What I would like is for page one to display records numbered 1 - x, page two to display reords numbered 1 - y, etc. Unfortunately, with the @@ attribute, page one displays 1 - x and page two displays x+1 to y. First, If I am posting in the wrong place please let me know. I am newbie with filemaker and really don't know where to go. I have an existing database where I track jobs/job numbers, time put against them etc. Currently when I create a new record in my Jobs table, the associated number is trasfered to the time sheet table, in a drop down menu, for my staff to choose from to enter time against. I am developing a database for my wife, who is a therapist. She keeps billing information, insurance information and daily notes. I made a relational database with one table the insurance information, one table the billing information,and one table the daily notes. I have the database done, except for on point. She needs to keep two sets of notes for each appointment. One set is her daily notes and these can be asked for by the legal system. I may be trying to do something that can't be done, but here goes: I'm building a calendar interface that lets users select a date from a pop-up calendar window. Each date is a button. OK - I am dumb. I can't seem to create an envelope where I have sliding fields. My fields are text, (NameFirst, NameLast) and I have selected them and gone to Sliding Objects slide left. Nothing - nada. Not in printing; not in Preview not in my life. WHAT am I doing wrong? It seems that this is such a simple function that there is little discussion on it. So it must be me. Hello, I am working on a solution with a lot of images in the layout. This is just to make a pleasing interface, all printing is done on seperate layouts, no images. . Anyway, my question is: What is the most optimal way to use images? Obviously, keeping the images as small as possible is one way, but beyond that - is it more efficient to import directly into the layout or store via reference? If an image is copied, does it just load the image once and display it twice (like on a webpage) or does it actually load it twice? I've created a fairly in-depth database that requires us to import emails into it. I have created a script that pastes the entire email into a field. (WITHOUT styles of course) Then the rest of the script breaks the email apart and uses set field functions to put it into the appropriate fields. My problem lies in that when the information is placed into the fields they have a formatting of 12pt Helvetica, etc. I need NO formatting so that this can be changed within the layout. I understand the entered formatting takes precedence over layout formatting. Any suggestions??

Hi I have a relation which is a one to many. I have Projects and Tasks I have created a report which shows the Project in the header and all the tasks on the second page. i scripted a find Tasks , which searches on the ID in the Tasks table. Worked good in Browse mode, but in Preview mode the first Task disappears. so if i have 4 Tasks in Preview, say Task 1, Task 2, Task 3, Task 4 ; when I look at it in Preview mode, I see only Task 2, Task 3, Task 4 - Task 1 is nowhere to be seen. hi everyone, my apologies, i've lost my mind several days ago trying to figure this one out. and i seem to be running in circles... Hi, I'm fairly new to FM and am using FMP7. I'm creating and Invoice database which has a list of Invoice Items. Each Item has a pop-up list to first select the product type we are trying to place in the invoice. I then want the product name field to have a pop-up list containing product of the selected category. Now the trick is that each product category is a different table. How do I get the pop-up list to look into a different table to create a value list, based on the input of the 'category' field. I have a database for tracking invoices. There are invoices, puchase orders and payment tables and once the invoice has been registered the invoice number shows up in a value list within the purchase order table. Once an invoice is paid it is marked as such in the payment table by selecting the invoice number and a radio button. What I would like is for the invoice value list in the purchase order table and payment table to only show the invoices which are still to be paid. Can anyone help? Thanks

I have come across a problem that Filemaker support have aknowledged to be a bug. If you have large blocks of text (mine are all max. one page long) with merged fields and you justify the text left and right (block), when printing FMP7 leaves out random pieces of text. This does not happen when text is justified left only. I have been in touch with FM support and they said that this can occur with some fonts. I'm using Times New Roman and have tried other fonts that give the same result. The only font I have tried that does not have this problem is Courier. I have has to go through dozens of layouts and reformat. I also get a strange thing when leaving the block of text, …

Ok so I think this post beongs here, but if not let me know and I will delete and re-post! We have two groups of users that will be using the same database. These two groups will not see any of the same screens due to certain reports that will be run, scripts that could be executed, admin fields and whatnot. Right now I have seperated them into two files and am using a script to open the correct file depending on their privilege set. IS this neccesary? I could do it more simple CORRECT??

Hi everyone. I am not new to using Filemaker, but I am new to working with the layout of a database. So forgive me if my terminology is a bit off... I am curious as to the most efficient way to move data from one portal to another. I have a portal that displays drug name, dosage and instructions. I move the information from this portal to a patients drug list in another portal by first putting the text into a global field using: SetField [ x;y ] where x is the global field and y the portal data GoToField [ z ] where z is in the other portal GoToPortalRow [ last ] SetField [ z ; x ] Is there a better way? Hi, I'd like to do a list layout, but I don't want to see duplicates of the same content; although I want to see the first occurence of the duplicates. A little bit a detail will help understand. I have DB of different people living in different towns. Each town as a seperate related record in another table (one name can have more than one town but each records in the Town Table as only one of each; so the same person has more than one record in the Town table and the same town can repeat with different people - is it clear??). In simple terms, I have two fields on a layout with pop-up value lists. The second field's value list should be populated based on the first field's value. I am having trouble with "portal creep". When I display a large number of entries in a portal window and scroll down by clicking in the elevator bar, after about 10 windows worth, I notice that the top entry is only half displayed. The more I scroll down, the more the rows have "crept" up in the window. I've tried resizing the portal row size and the portal area, and FileMaker insists it knows what it's doing. Example, if I have eleven rows in the portal area and each row is 20 pixels, Filemaker won't let me set the area size to 220 - it insists on 221. This may be what explains the creep - but it actually seems like I'm creeping by a fraction of a pixel with each click.…

After you make your selection, the pop up list continues to drop down. When I open one of my databases on my Mac OS X development system, FontAgent momentarily reports it's activating a Helvetica Narrow font, which I have not intentionally used in this or any other FileMaker database. Since I will be deploying this database on other Mac and Windows systems, I'd like to track down and eliminate the Helvetica Narrow reference. I'm hopeful there's a way to do this short of checking the font on every field in 8 layouts. Suggestions? -- Ward

I'm trying to develop a task manager program and I'm really stuck at this next part. What I have is a punch list of activities that need to occur. Each time something needs to be added to the list a new record is created. The main parts of this record include a TASK description, MEMO field and START-STOP times. You can go to each record to add or review a memo. If you are ready to start the task, you can select the green START button. The START button lives in a portal. I have just created a database for the school I teach at which displays, among other things, a student's misdemeanours through a portal. Each portal row has a preview/print button to either preview and/or print the contents of that portal row in bigger detail in a separate layout. Clicking this button on some of the portal rows correctly displays the field contents of that row in the new layout while clicking the button on other portal rows causes FM to display the first record of the database and then exit from FM7 when a Continue button is pressed (which pops up when the portal row's button is clicked). Hi all, I have a small problem with printing layouts in preview mode where I have few portals, and other fields spanning multiple pages. The main problem is where I use sliding so portals and text fields slide up when there is no data to fill it. The problem is with page boudries, as fields slide up and cross the page boundry they are not being split up properly. What I mean is I see duplicate data from the first page on the second page, almost bottom 1/3 of what is on first page is repeated on top of the 2nd page and so on. I have a field with Field Format set to "Pop-Up Menu" and a Value List Selected. In Browse mode I want a particular item from the Value list to be displayed as the "default" value. I've tried several approaches, but the only one that seems to work is using a script with "Set Field" and setting the value. Is there a "better" or more general way to select which Value List item is the default that the list will display? (Pop-up Menu or List, doesn't make a difference.) TIA.

I have 2 layouts for 2 related tables they are conferences and invites the relationship is set up conferences.confID----<invites.confID I just want a button on the conference layout to jump to the invites layout but only show invites for the conference that was the current record on the conference layout. I am writing a database for a school to track student info. In one layout there are a series of check box values in a field named "Areas of need". Values may be reading, communication, etc. If a value is selected, another layout, "Goals" needs to be completed. A record may have 1 "Ares of need" and cooresponding "Goal" selected or 10. Additionally, multiple "Goals" could be required for one "Area of need". Is there a way to automatically duplicate the layout for "Goal" only when more than one is required? Is there a way to make portal borders with vertical scroll bars more attractive? So far that only method I've come up with is to make the portal's borders invisible, and position little triangles (I used the Webdings font, in a text label) over the now-invisible scroll buttons. But for some reason, those triangles always disappear in one particular portal - even though I used the Format Painter to copy that portal's appearance from another's. Thank you for any suggestions.

I'm building an office appoinment scheduler. If a slot (a field) is open (empty) I want the background green and if closed I want the background red. I have the container calculation field which holds the color behind the time slot field. The color changes fine based on if the field is empty or not. However, when any field is clicked into, the color changes to white. This only happens when the fields are in a portal. Any way to remedy this? Thanks, Toffler

I apologize if this is a repeat question, but I searched at length and couldn't find my answer. I've been trying to figure this out for years without luck. I would like to make a "full name" field utilizing mergefields that comes out clean. How can I ask it to look at one field and if that field is not empty, to insert a space? For example, <<If <<MiddleInitial>> <> "" " " "">> or if the field MiddleInitial is not empty, insert space. I've tried using separate "spacer" fields but couldn't figure out if it would work with a calculation. Is there a way to do this? Thanks in advance!

Here is the setup: I am looking at a job sheet that has a portal that lists associated rounds. I have a button in the first row of the portal (which duplicates with each row) that directs you to the related record in rounds. In my old system (Filemaker 5), it would take you directly to the round from which you clicked on and all the other related records would be present. Now in Filemaker 7, it takes you to the first record no matter where you click on the portal. The relationships are the same from new to old. What's the deal?

Hey folks, I ran a search but couldn't find anything on this. The key command for "ungroup" doesn't work on my system (never has) [Win 2K, Dev7.0v3]. Try as I might, control-shift-r does nothing. I've tried pressing the keys in a specific order, crossing my fingers, praying to the IT Gawds... all to no avail. Control-r works fine to group, and commands for lock/unlock work as well. Just not "ungroup". Is this a known problem? Any chance of a work-around? I'm trying to become more efficient in my workflow and mousing around when I shouldn't have to is really starting to annoy me. Thanks! -Stever

If you have a VL consisting of an ID and a calculated names field, only 1 value will appear in the drop down if there are two ore more identical names in the database. Is there an elegant way of workaround to show all these valid values? I use to trim all values used in the calc-field for good reasons so blanks don't work in this case. Maybe include a 3rd field into the calculated field...what I actually want to avoid. Another thing to consider is there are hundreds of records without any name (like the main address of companies without a personal contact) I don't want to show up in the drop down if there's a workaround to really show up all entries...

I'm building an inventory database for our lab, specifically regarding the storage of cell culture samples in liquid nitrogen. I've got some familiarity with database design and normality, and was wondering if I could put the functionality of Filemaker to work for me. There are two containers for these samples. This is not really necessary, but I'd like to know if it can be done.... Can a portal's relationship (ie: what table it's related to) be changed dynamically - by a value list for instance. I have a multi-table db and am using the portals to display info only (data entry is via other layouts) from various tables. I am trying to create a telephone directory, and I would like to display the page number and the ranges of entries on a given page in the header and/or footer. Assuming page 23 went from John Smith to Barbara Summers the header or footer would display something like: 23 - SMI - SUM Obviously, the definition of the header part is it displays data from the first displayed record and the definition of the footer is it displays data from the last. I'm trying to make a layout that has a header that displays in Browse mode, one that has buttons attached to scripts, a company graphic, etc., but that only prints on the first page in preview mode (like a cover sheet might in Word, except that only part of the page would be the cover sheet - I know, wierd, huh?). It would also be great to have a header that is separate that only has the column labels, that would print on every page. Is there any way to accomplish this?

This sounds really wacky, but I saw this and I'm dying to figure out how it is done. On the CCGant FM7 project they have a calculation field that you can click on, and it shows a regular drop down (though the drop down is not listed on the field format except as an edit). Then once the field is entered, it updates the calculation, but only shows the ID field on the drop down! The rest of the time it's just the calculation. I know plenty of ways to do this with two fields and clear buttons and all that. How do you do this with just the calculation field in the portal? Can anyone tell me? It's worth a dinner out somewhere if I get paid for my work. -Alex

I have a layout that does not print properly. I can clearly see that there is a striped, gray line visible in layout view that is acting as the margin. I cannot figure out how to move this striped, gray line. I searched the FileMaker help file and the Bible with no luck. I am either not thinking of the proper term to search for or overlooking it. Hi, I'm a new Filemaker Pro user, having moved over from Microsoft Access on a PC. I have a database with a number of tables, two of which are 'Companies' and 'Individuals'. The Individuals table has a 'Company' field that is related to the ref field in the Companies table. When adding/editting Individuals, I want to be able to select the name of the company from a dropdown list and have the Company field automatically populated with the ref from the selected record. I have a report based on a table CallCodeOccurence I have it subsummarizing by CallCodeType (from the related table CallCode) The rows are basically a date, a call code, a description and a count field. No problem counting the CallCodeOccurence records or totalling them. Hi, I'm having a problem with getting all the linked records I should see in a Portal between 2 tables in the same file. The Match field is of the form MA-0107.00 and is indexed in both files. I have sorted each table independently by this field to ensure that there are not extaneous spaces or formatting would preclude a match, and the value does exist in both files. The "master file" may have several instances of the value, while the "lookup" file has only one entry per value. I get about 80% hits, so not sure what is happening. I'm trying to use a portal to show a client's treatment sessions. I'd like to add multiple session details through the portal, but each session should have a unique ID. Although I can enter one session's details, then tab to the next etc, the auto-entering doesn't increment so ~I end up with several portal records with the same id. Obviously this is invalid... I prepare reports for political candidates and have been using FM to keep track of the basic contribution and expense data. I then export several files (one for each report section) and import them into Excel for printing the reports in the proper format. I'd like to do all of this in Filemaker if possible but don't see a way to accomplish it. Here is the main issue that I see. Why is it so danged difficult to add a new custom color in the COLOR dialog box to any swatch other than the first? Hello, I have a floating palette, which has some buttons on it, while my user is using this palette i pause the script indefinately. So you get a 'stay on top' type of effect, in that same palette layout, I have a button which says close, in that I have a script which closes the palette - how do I resume the script at that point, the only way I can get it to work (so far) is by clicking the 'continue' button in the status area OR by creating a button with a 'resume script' action.
