Value Lists

Hi - schoolboy stuff this for you brainiacs but I'm new to this, especially scripting and calculations! I need to make a value list that automatically determines the week ending dates for the year. Currently you just 'edit...' the list and input it manually, but I want FM to calculate it so I dont have to worry about getting it wrong! How on this earth do I do that? i.e. 28-05-04 04-06-04 11-06-04 etc If you can help it would be appreciated, I'm not built for FM, give me audio or design any day!

I am trying to convert several dbs from FM6 to FM7 and have got stuck on a value list problem. In the db a value list is obtained from a related field with multiple (up to 4) repetitions. In FM6 this works just fine and the value list returned includes all of the data in the related field, incl that in repetitions of the related field. In FM7 however the list returned contains ONLY the values in the first repetition of the related field and those values in the 2nd 3rd and 4th repetitions of the related field are not included in the value list. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? any help much appreciated jw

I want to have a value list that is based off of a calc field sort uniquely, but it keeps alpha sorting. The value list is a pop list that uses a unique internal relationship and is sorted by the calc field. When I place the field in a layout, it shows correctly. When I enter the field with the value list, it sorts alphabetically. Any ideas?

I have a large text value list that I am unable to add using the "Use Custom Values" option. The maximum character count indicated in the error msg is 30000. How can I define the value list with such a large number of values? Do I use "Use values from another file"? I have tried to specify a text document containing the values with this option but am not allowed to select the file. Thanks

I want the action of making a value list choice to trigger a "show related record." The value list only shows "Jobs" records related to the "Client." From the client layout, I would like jump to the related record, and show the desired job on the Jobs layout. Is it possible in FM7?

I have a list of people, and a salutation field that allows you to choose how an envelope should be addressed. Choices should be Mark and Anne, Mr and Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs Mark Smith, etc. I have this by having a field Salutation which is a value list based on a calculation field (Salutation Calc). If I display Salutation Calc, everything is perfect, but when I display Salutation, it has Mark and Anne, James and Suzanne, Mr and Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs Johnson, etc, because it is indexing the calculation from every person's record. I am going crazy. I'm sure that there are many posts relating to this subject but I cant find them. Someone please help me. I have two tables (FMP7) One is manufacturers and one is products. I want to choose the manufacturer and then only get the items related to that manufacturer when I am in a table I have named QUOTES. Okay here how it is I have a list of records which belong to a group Each record has a group field which is a drop down value list So you can do a search for a group via this value list great! however when making a new group what I want to do is to 1. Goto the list of records that belong to new group 2. Custom Dialog - asking what the group name should be 3. This is then added to all the Group fields (not taking out any groups that have already been added - i.e keep multi-select) What is the best approach for this? Is there any way to use different value lists for the same field (on the same layout) under different circumstances? I need to pull up a pop-up list of Contact ID's for correspondence. If the correspondence is outgoing, the From ID value list should be populated entirely by employees (gathered from a related table). If the correspondence is incoming, it should be populated by everyone else (gathered from the same related table as the employees). When I try to do it using "related values only" the short employee list pops up rather quickly. But the longer list of everyone else almost never pops up and sometimes causes FM to freeze. I am not sure which script definition I have to use if I make the following script: I have a pop-up menu and several items, if I click on "Different" there musr appear a new field next to my pop-up menu where I can add i manually. I know I can also choose for the option "Other" for the preferences of a pop-up menu, but this way will add it to the pop-up menu. Which I dont want. I have the following: Field- Regions Field- Stores Each region has different 'stores' associated with it. If I creat a value list for field "stores" it will contain hundreds of entry's and will be difficult for user to find/select appropriate "store". Since each region only has about 15-20 stores associated with it, I would like to have different value lists of "stores" for different "regions". I have a portal with title's & names. i have specified a sort order for the portal based on value list from another file. the sort it returns is alphabetical. when i change the sort order to ascending or descending the sort function works fine. when i select any sort order found in the "specify" box it does not seem to recognize the list and defaults to a alphabetical order. this has only occured since migrating to 7. it worked perfect in 5.5 any thoughts??

Is there a way using FMP (Dev 6) to format a field to use a pop-up list only when requested? For example, the user clicks into the field, but only calls the value list when he/she clicks a button located next to the field which has a down arrow symbol on it (actually the fmforums post writing screen is using exactly what I'm looking for ....). I have a Sales file where I can choose a product from a value list defined from a Product file. I have products in my Product file that have been withdrawn that I don't want to appear in the value list but I still want to show in the Product file. Is there a way I can only show the current products without choosing anything from the Sales file to define the value list?

I converted a FMP database which consisted of more than 10 files, from version 5.5 to 7.0. The conversion created a lot of problems and issues. One of the problems is that a field (in file : use a popup list that is designed to use an external value list in a relational file (file A) that shows related values only. This value list (in file : works fine in the Browse mode, but does not show any value in Find mode. I didn't have this problem when the files were in version 5.5. Has anyone seen this problem before? We often place multiple buttons along the top of our headers to launch specific scripts. On some of our layouts thre is now quite a bit of buttons collecting up top. Are we able to create a value list which upon selecting an item launches a particular script : This is similar to what we find in Microsoft Access drop down menus. I am a newbiw with many of the new features in FM7 and passing parametrs around. Any help is greatly appreciated. It would eliminate a lot of button clutter.

newbie. i need to make a checkbox in one of my layouts. i want ot have a box that has a small, blank box named "conventions". when a particular file is convention "worth", i want to be able to take my mouse and click on the box and an "x" will appear. how can i do this?

I feel a bit embarassed asking such experts - but I've used FM Pro for years and it's about time I REALLY used it (If you know what I mean) I want to get percentages from value lists - ie: how many times someone chose an item on a list. I want to use a table for a lookup field on a data entry layout. My problem is that when I select an item from the popup list, a new record is created in the table from which the popup list derives. I want it to enter the original id from the lookup table into the main table. Example: I have a database with Recipe as the main table and several related one-to-many tables: Source, Course, and Ingredient. This problem is mostly a relationship issue, but the main problem I am having is that I am trying to use IWP to publish my database, and I was told that using a portal would eliminate the problems of commiting each time you edit a record. I want these records to be in list view, so that someone online can just click on a field in a particular record, edit it, then click another field in another record. The problem is, in FMP 7 and IWP, you cannot do that. You must click on a button that commits the record you just edited before clicking on another field in another record. I'm trying to create a salutation field which will be populated from a value list. The options should be Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Mr. Smith, Ann and Mike, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Smith, etc. What I have now is a value list from a field, which is a calculation based on the name and title fields. How can I make that value list more than one item long? I guess this is asking, if I'm doing this correctly, how do I make the field have several values? Say i had 2 fields one field was TYPE and there was 2 options A or B and the second field was Spec (for instance) and for TYPE A the options were either 1 2 3 4 5 and for B there was 6 7 8 9 ok! Working with Win XP, FMP 6.0v4 Example: 1.08, 1.08, 1.08, 1.09, 1.09, 1.11, 2.01 the aveage of these = 1.22 Peoples names in my data base, each name has 10 different fields, each with data in them from 1.00 to 16.12. ok.. I have some value lists that are based off of fields. the problem is that any value in the field that is over a certain length, doesn't seem to want to show up in the value list. If I put these same values in a regular value list it works fine.. very odd problem.

I've got a radio button field displaying a value list. The formatting on the field is set so that "Other" is allowd. When I click on the other entry (in the radio button) I get a dialog that pops up and I enter some text and if I look inside the field the value is there...however the radio button display does not add this new entry to the list....and that's what I want. I suspect that if I define the value list (which is displayed as the radio button field) as getting it's value from a field ...that it would allow me to dynamically add to the radio button. I've seen a few people frustrated by this, as I have been, without any really clear answers. So I sat down and figured this out this morning. Hope this helps anyone else who has been stuck on this. The behavior of drop down lists has changed in FM 7. In FM 6 if you set up a drop down list from a value list, and the value list was set to also show another value, and sort by that 2nd value, then typing in a field would take you to the 2nd value. I guess in filemaker the query tool is replaced by the valuelist. Is there a way to get two-columned Value Lists to be neatly vertically-aligned (in FM7)?___ The second column should be vertically aligned, rather than zig-zag'd. They look messy, and are harder to 'read' .

I am writing a database to generate pupil reports for my school. The structure includes a database file editable by a department that is the source of pup-up lists for the separate report generating file. However, I seem to have a problem that text longer than 254 characters is cut off when I do a look up using a pop-up list in the report generating file to grab data from the other file. I have a value list that is based on a repeating field. What I want is to get the values in the list in the same order as they are in the repeating field. Rep 1 comes first in the list, then rep 2 and so on. I'd prefer only to have the values from the repeating field in the VL. Is there a way?

I have a popup menu for inventory items, the value that must be inserted into the line item table is the INVENTORY_ID, but I would like the user to see in the popup menu the INVENTORY_NAME to make it more user-friendly. I will do my best to explain my problem. Database "Proposal.FP5" houses a portal to database "pInvoice.FP5". "pInvoice.FP5 contains a relationship to "ProductPriceList.FP5". The "ProductPriceList.FP5" database contains several fields including a category. What I want to do is create a filter in the "Proposal.FP5" database that will only show items in the value list related to the filter. ie: if filter = display ads, then every product who's category has display ads choosen will show up. Hi, I have a table "tour" with a "car_no", a "driver", a "co_driver" and some more fields. Because "driver" and "co_driver" mostly use the same car I want to ease the entry of a new "tour" by building a value list of previous drivers of that car. I defined a self-relation of "tour" with "car_no" as connector and a value list of driver_no and driver_name with only related values. Everything works fine, but the list of a car grows with every new tour of that car. How can I suppress duplicate entries, though the list shows only different previous drivers of a car. I can't recall if this happened in 6, but in 7 I've noticed that a conditional value list will not update until you exit the record (if you've changed the contents of the field on which the condition is based for example). I guess this makes sense, since the change hasn't been comitted yet, but you'd think they'd write a workaround for something so obviously useful. Any comments? is this a bug? or a feature?

Does anybode know if there is a way to create a value list of dates?:.. I have a field called "Due date" which get's its value from the user. I would like to based on that field create a value list "pull down menu" that contains the calendar days from the current date up to 5 days before the due date. for example, If the due date is set to 7/15/04 then I would like the pull down menu to display 6/29/04, 6/30/04, 7/1/04, 7/2/04, 7/3/04, 7/5/04 ...... 7/10/04. One value list is Reading in that list is 6/1 Advanced Remedial you get the idea. These are shown on a layout as a radio button since they can only have one of each. I have an inventory table joined to a line item table through an ingredient name field. The inventory table contains a list of ingredients used in my restaurant. It also contains a category field which allows me to to assign categories such as seafood, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, etc. to different ingredients. I created a value list based on the ingredient name field in the inventory table and attached it to the ingredient name field in the line item table which gives me a pop-up list of 1300 ingredient names. (Filemaker 6) We have a "Clients.fp5" file, and it has a "Client Name" and a "Client ID" field (along with lots of other Client information). In a different file, the user wants to be able to type in a Client ID, and have all the other information, including Client Name, be looked up. If they don't know the Client ID, they want to be able to select from a dropdown list of Client Names, and have all the other Client information, including Client ID, be looked up. The only solution I can think of is a complicated one that I don't want to saddle them with, after I am gone. Does anyone have a simple way of doing this?

hello, i'm strugeling with this for a few days now, and i can't seem to get the result i want. I'm pretty new to FM, so explain in detail (I have read a few posts about this topic, but i don't understand them). I'm wording in FM7 situation, I have a table with company's, one of the fields is 'status' with can be (suspect, prospect, client, past). I have an other table with invoices. when i select the company for the invoice, i have a drop down list with a value list. I am having this issue where the pop-up list box is fine for 1/2 of the users. The other 1/2 of the users only see about 1/3 of the pop up material. Any suggestions?

Hi, It appears that when using IWP, the option to have a pop-up menu include the "other" option (whereby one can enter something that is not on the list) doesn't work. The line in the menu that has "other" (in FM) is present but blank in the web version, and if you select it, all that happens is that the field data is set to empty. I would expect a pop-up window to appear as in FM. Using a pop-up list, rather than menu, which in FM allows you to type directly in the field, also doesn't work because on the web it also behaves as a menu. Is this a known limitation of IWP? does anyone know of a workaround? Gareth

I really need some help on this one - I don't even know where to start. I have an issues table - for each issue a certain discipline is selected (Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) and the report that prints out of all the issues sorts by discipline. Now the company wants any one issue to be able to be in multiple disciplines. So if an issue is defined as electrical and mechanical, it will show up once in the mechanical part of the report and again in the electrical, without actually having to have more than one record for the issue. I have several numbered lists of information that are value lists in my database. When the popup lists are displayed in any given field, they by default are alphabetized resulting in out-of-sequence numbering: 1. Item 1 10. Item 10 11. Item 11 12. Item 12 2. Item 2 3. Item 3 4. I want to know how to enter data in repeating fields using value lists from a related file. In detail - I have two databases - one for invoices with repeated fields for Product Code, Batch No, Rate, Quantity etc. and another one as my Product Master with fields for Product Code, Batch No, Rate etc. and containing multiple records for Product Codes with different Batch Nos. I'm now designing a new DB in filemaker, and automatically given every table an ID for reference. Now, do I really need it for cases where the instance of that table can be referenced by another key?? Eg a Tutor will have a unique name - and this will make user interface easier without ID as I can give the user entering data a list of names rather than ID numbers. I was going to make drop down list from the Tutor table in the form of names taken out of the Tutor table that slot in the related ID number when chosen... if that makes any sense!!?? I am trying to use a value list from another file. When I create the value list in the other file, then click ok, the name of the value list does not show up -- instead I get <value list missing>. It seems the values in the list itself are maintained, just not the name. When I format the field in the portal (format -> field format -> popup list, etc.) the name of the value list is not in the list, just a blank space. I have a value list that has 20+ enties. I formated the field to radio buttons and found that I can only select up to the 17'th entry in the list. If I try to select below (verticle format) this, I and my mouse are ignored. This is occuring in several different fields and different VL's. How can I go arround this? Is there a fix? Thanks.

Unlike 5 where selecting a value from a value lsit collapses the list, I am finding in 7 that when I select a value from the list, the value enters the field, the VL box collapses momentarily, then opens and stays open. I need to convert a paper flowchart system of asking questions to Filemaker Pro. This is for a family Tech Support. The system would need to be able to ask a question by the Tech Support. Then based on the answer (yes or no)another pop up will come up and ask the next question. Is this possible in Filemaker Pro? And if so then where would I start. Organisms can be arranged within hierarchies (the Linnean system): Kingdom > Phylum > Class > Order > Family > Genus > Species. Hi All! I am a newbie, and currently having some trouble. I have a database with two tables, Clients and Orders, which have relationships defined upon the fields name and address. In the orders table I have a clients field, which operates via a dropdown menu with the values from the clients table within it (I have done this via a value list). Hi, I have a field that is formatted as a pop-up list and displays values from a value list. Users are supposed to select one of the values from the drop-down menu; however, sometimes they type in their own values. How can I avoid this? If I create reports based on those values a lot of unknown/entered by the users values appear. I can't really use radio buttons because I have more than 20 values in the list. Is there any way to make users select values from pop-up list and at the same time not to allow them to type or modify those values? Thank you!

I have a donor table with customer code, name, etc. When I'm entering donations, I start by entering the customer code. However, many people send in checks without sending in our voucher (on which is their code). We need to do a lookup on the name in order to find the code. I created a pop-up list that included the name field as a second field with the code, and sorted by the name. In FMP 6 and earlier, if you started typing the letters of the name, the cursor would pop down to that name in the list. With FMP 7 that doesn't seem to work. You have to scroll down and look for the name in the list, which is far less efficient. Any suggestions? Am I doing something…

I'm confused as to why this is so tough, but I seem to be going around in circles with this dang conditional pop-up menu. I on the one hand have a movie database that has movies divided into "Current" and "Archive." On the other I have a theater database where I want to have pop up menus containing only the "Current" movies. Seems like I want to have a 1). relationship where I find all the movies, and then 2). a value list where I trim out the "Archive" movies. Morning all I am working in a db that uses a pop up list of customers in alphabetical order(about 50 customers) What I would like is to be able to go back to the part of the list I was working on rather than back to the start of the list which seems to be the default. eg if my last customer was called filemaker the next find would automatically return to filemaker rather than Abbacus which is the first customer on the list. When I copy a field to the 2nd database, the link to a particular value list does not stay with the field. . In FmPro 6 .... When Creating an index on a text field for relational purposes, filemaker indexes the first 20 characters of each word or the first 60 characters of the key, so when you might be concatenating two (or more) words, you can exceed the 20 characters per word limit, but if you put spaces between the words, you are likely to run into that problem and you get each word in your index. So if we put spaces between the words, the 60 characters limit is the only problem for use bigger key in our relation. Did anyone know what is the limit in FM Pro 7 Is same or something bigger...? Halfway through, my checkboxes are no longer visibly working, although when I change them to pop-ups, my selections are there. Kind of a 2 part question: 1) I have a order entry db where you select the customer. The customer list is based on a Customer Database file. However there can be more than 1 entry of a customer name but have to different bill to addresses.
