Hello everyone I obviously need help again This time it's a calc. OK the two files in question are Job's and Log's. What I need to do is figure out a calc field that will display the total hours for a particular Job. I have it set up in the Log's file to calculate the total Log hour individually . I can't seem to figure out which sequence or formula to create the "total Job Hours" field?? Please any help is greatly appreciated Thanks Synergy

I have a pretty complicated program running but the break down is basicaly between just two of the three files. In the first fileA i have a list of items and I say how many I want if any of each. both the item and the number of items are fields from fileB. File B updates fine you look at it and all the info is there. fileC has many inventory parts that are associated with each item. I'm developing a project management system and document management features have appeared on the wish list. People want a field where they could store aliases, shortcuts, or links or whatever.. to different files regarding the project so that one could launch the file by clicking on it in FM. I asked couple of days ago how to do this and someone pointed out that this could be done via applescript, or a thirdparty windows scripting system (whitch is not possible because this database will be used on PC and Mac, and the server just might be linux) I was thinking about using the "go to url" function (file:///MACHD/File1.txt) etc. But since browsers only know so many filetype…

I 've been working on a report that has a Sub-Summary that sorts by a text field "Designer". I 've got this sub-summary area counting the number of records, designs sold by each designer , etc.. Everything is coming our right except on how to figure *each* designers percentage sold. Two of my fields are a text field called "Sold" which is simply a Yes or No field and a field "Designers Total Sold" that counts the number of Yes's in the "Sold" field. I want to do a simple division between "Designers Total Sold" and "Designers Total Projects Done" to get *each* designers percentage sold. Does anyone know of a solution to either speed up or prevent a layout (with two portals) from refreshing. This becomes an annoyance to users, as everytime they absolutley do anything in the layout, it refreshes slowly. Or should I say, the refresh is very noticeable. Thanks for your time. null

Does anyone know of an existing ad-tracking system that would work for FileMaker Pro 5? I am trying to set one up for a monthly magazine we publish, but I am having a little difficulty in setting up the months the ad will run (i.e. April 2001, October 2003, etc.) and being able to find them in a search in order to print out an ad log (does any of this make sense?). In lieu of something existing, I have actually already set-up most of the system, except the "months of run" section explained above, and a few other small annoyances having to do with balances, etc. Please let me know if you can help. I needed a way to do good CC # input validation, without actually posting to a CC processor in real time, or even before I post to a CC gateway some junk CC#. I found the MODULUS-10 "double-add-double" check digit method, AKA LUHN Formula, detailed in ISO-7812 Part 1, does several good things for validating the CC number. First, it insures no spaces, alphas, dashes, etc is present in the card number, although this is a trivial thing to verify in Filemaker using other techniques, and should be done anyway before this validation. I need to capture time code information into a FM database running on a Macintosh. The data would be available via a serial cable connected to a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) deck. The idea would be to capture the starting and ending time code for each take during a recording session. After the session, the data would be exported to a computerized editing system (Avid) and used to cue up the DAT for digitizing. Any ideas on how to set up the FM database for capturing time code?

I have a Time Duration field which is calculated by the usual Start/Stop times. I then need this to be converted to a Unit value to be used as a qty. Currently I copy the Time value into a dummy field, I then create a new calculation using a combination of TimeToText, Right() to remove Seconds and then Substitute() to convert the ascii character ":" to "." and I finally get my qty ie. 5:35:45 becomes 5.35 Can someone please clarify if this is a good way of doing it?, or maybe offer a better option. I am not sure how to create a script to import different PDF files. Here is the scenario: I have a FM file with 1000 records. Each record has a unique ID. Each record also has a container field labeled PDF that is set for PDF files. Existing on a network drive, there are 1000 different PDF files that each have a unique name that corresponds to the unique ID. I.E., record 1 has an ID of 0001; this would mean that there is a PDF file named 0001.PDF stored on a network drive. I am using FM 5 on Win 98. Hi, Here's my whole project. I want to have open only a small fm file on the host machine that says "which file do you want to use?" When you click on a button it opens that file one the host machine. You use it then you quit. Then host notices file is idle and closes or "times out". My thinking was that once the file was open on the host I could then go to my open file -> host -> whatever file on the remote. I created the first part of the file put it on the host, scripted all the buttons to open the files in there location on the host and so forth. Hi. I don't want to have all the files open on the host all the time because it takes a lot of resources. On the other hand I don't want to call the office and ask them to open x or z file every time ( espeacially if there's no one there ). So I wan't to be able to open them on the host remotely so I can open the file on my local machine. If anyone has any ideas on this I would greatly appreaciate it. Thanks Raif

Sorry if this is a basic question. i just can't see it! I have a field "SoldTotal" that I want to get the sum of a bunch of records, field "ListPrice", in Tralling Grand Summary, but I only want it to total up the records who's field Sold has a "Yes" next to it. Does anyone know of a way to filer the items in a list view? I'm trying to think of a way to have a field available where the user could perform a quick entry and the items that show would be pared down to those records that match the entry. Ideally, what I would like is for a text area to appear at the top of the list where the user can enter a few letters. As the user does so, the items in the found set reduce to those that match the letters. So far the only way I can think to do this is with a portal, which I would like to avoid if possible. A major roadblock is that I can't have a field be enterable in the header of the layout. Any ideas? Thanks, Chuck

I have a FM solution running on Windows 2000 that crashes for no apparent reason. I cannot replicate the problem at will, though it happens frequently and it's driving me MAD. The error message is "FileMaker Pro.e.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created" Q: Can anyone tell me where that log is built, and how do I get access to it to look for clues as to why this is happening?

In my company we have a database with more then 700 fields. This database was made by a person that isn't a system engenier or something like this and it has many inconsitences. Don't ask me why, but I have the need to be able to set a date field to the day before whatever the field currently says the date is. Scenario: I have a field... "Date_Out" that is a calculated result when a "Job" is closed. I need to be able to set that date to the day before "Today". It sounded easy until I started working on it! "Date_Out = Day(Date_Out) -1". Heh. That works great until it's the first of the month! At that point the Day is either the 28th, 30th, or 31st depending on the month, and if it's New Years Day, well... you get the idea. Has anyone else tried doing this? Any ideas? I have 5000 records with dates from 1996-2001. Unfortunately the dates past 1999 came out as 1900 and 1901. I want to change this to 2000 and 2001. The date format is M/D/Y. I tried exporting as text and doing a find/replace on /1900 to /2000 but this somehow messed up the records when I reimported. Is there a way I can split the date apart, fix the year and then put them back together again? Any suggestions would very much be appreciated.

I am using global fields to number records sequentially in several db's. stored on "server" Mac Script sets global field to field value + 1. Reason is to keep record numbers sequential when some records are deleted or numbered as parts A, B, etc. Global fields only update when the "host" activates the scripts I am looking for suggestions to solve this problem without making a new db to store numbers for each file

Hi, I think this is gonna be a nasty one. Using filemaker 4.1, in a database I've two date fields, data_start and date_end. I use a website for our users to access this database to have a look in the planning of radiostation, I want them to be able to search on items running on a date they enter. I allready do it in FM itself, by running a simple script, but that's no solution to the web. Now I figured out I could create a textfield containing all dates from date_start 'till date_end. So, by searching on that textfield, FM comes up with all records 'running' on the requested date. The question is : how....... If anybody could help ?? Cheers, Andr

I am using the number generated by FMP5 dates as a Lot#. We also use a separated labelling program to print box labels. I was trying to duplicate a calculation so that I could generate that number. I would like to be able to execute batch files from a script. Is this possible without a seperate DDE server or does one of the Windows applications implement this functionality. I have been to the Microsoft Tech Net site, and if you have tried to get info from Microsoft's over saturated Knowledge Base you know what I mean. I have two questions: One: I have 1800 records with a date (imported from FoxPro) in the form 20010509, year 2001, month 05, day 09. How can I change all this date field so the date is 05/09/2001. The new input is OK its the old 1800 that I need to change. I did a left, right and middle but it leaves spaces between the numbers. Two: I have a field that contains names. I have a database with lots of data and people have changed the font when they enter the data. I now need to standardize the font throughout. If I go to layout and set the font this does not appear to change it in all the records. Is there a way of doing this globally. Hi! I have been asked by a school nurse to come up with a calculation that will warn if an immunization date is less than one year from the date of birth. I have played with several formulas, and I can't quite seem to get the exact number of days I need. I want to have it calculate so that if the number is 365 days or more, nothing need be done. But, if the number is less than 365 days, I want a text message to say "INVALID". Can anyone help me come up with this formula? Thanks. Becky

I have a Tray Utility that will run applications at specific times. This is utilized because the Technical Support deptartment gets here later and leaves earlier because other departments that use the Databases have different shifts. At 5:30 AM a batch file will start, it downloads the current data from Oracle, then starts up the Host session and opens all the databases being served. Then at 8:30 PM another batch file opens a database with the Exit Application script step as the startup script to close the whole thing down for the nightly backup. What is the best to mark a record active or void?? Inorder not to be deletd records but be able to sort through active "quote requests" (the db is an on-line quoting system) and the void ones would signify records that have been delt with. Please note that access to voiding a record must be controllable via user log-in. And also that much of the db layouts use portals to view many records at once. i would like to add this next level of refinement (active/ void) for clarity. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the help I have received so far. So now that I have found all of the orders placed within a certain range, I need to get an Invoice date. i.e. Tha last order may have been placed on the 27th but I want the invoice dated the last day of the month (the day I print them out). Of course after this I will need some help with a script that prints out the invoices for all clients at the end of the month* (except if balance due is zero). Until I get a copy of a good book for FM (i.e. FM Companion) I need a few qnswers to some questions. The manuals are O.K. but they are by no means complete tutorials. Anyway, here I go. On paper I have created what I think is the right matrix. I have three fields: (F_Size_Bytes, F_Size_KBytes, F_Size_MBytes). I want to be able enter data into anyone of these three and automatically have the other two updated. If this is impossible then how could i have a fourth field (F_Size) be the total number of bytes (even though i inputed say MegaBytes): I understand the math concept (*1024 or /1024) i just don't know how to get filemaker to work this way. I am just now delving into Filemaker and I am having trouble with a field calculation. I want a field "Label Name" to be populated by a combination of 3 other fields: "Title", "First Name", and "Last Name". I only want this to happen if the field is currently empty. If someone has already manually filled in the "Label Name" field (it is not currently a calculation field) then I don't want it to change. I have created a time clock/labor entry database with start and stop time and dates which works fine. Trying to figure out the easiest way to do two things: 1. Prevent the same user from creating a time charge on the same day that overlaps with another. 2. Prevent the user from creating a time charge for a period of time that they are not clocked in. If I can't do it with a validation script (which I would prefer), I would be open to having a script that would flag the time "invalid". One stickler is that people leave for lunch so there is more than one clock in and out per day.

For simplicity sake ... I have a database with two fields. Client and Amount. I have a list of Clients and the amounts they owe. I want to print the list having a subtotal at the bottom of each page showing how much is owed on that page. The clients and amounts change every month. I can't seem to get this to work with sub-summaries or summary fields. It's easy to total the whole thing but I can't seem to get it to understand that I only want a subtotal for each page. In the actual application it has to be subtotaled on each page to meet a standard for a form submitted to the government otherwise there really isn't any reason to do this. Thanks for any help, Cael.

If I want to allow a customer to upload files within my form page how can I accomplish this so that they attach the file before submitting then the item's get placed into a folder with the corresponding Record ID as the folder name. ( so that the uploaded files and the quote request can be matched up)?? Lastly I'll be using FM5 Unlimited and FM5 Server on the same cpu. each year our dept has auditions for prospective students. as each audition date approaches, students are constantly added to the schedule and the order changes (due to cancellations, students needing a specific time, etc.). our scheduler (not me, luckily) has been tediously changing the audition time of each student using EXCEL. there's got to be an easier way. i thought i would try to help her, but i need some help myself. if you need more info, please let me know.

Here's the deal as simply as I can put it. Let's make a DB with two fields in it and call the first one "item". The second field will be "Sumitem". "Item" will be just a number field and "Sumitem" will be a summary field of "item" with the running total option selected. Now we'll create 3 or so records in this DB and in each record we'll enter the number 10 in the item field. So if we now look at the field "item" in each record we'll see the number 10 in each field. If we look at the "Sumitem" field we'll notice that in record one we see 10, in record two we see 20 and in record 3 we see the number 30. It relates to an inventory system and the Actual quote is built up via a portal in the main Quote DB. Need help in setting up a calculation. Database changing from having multiple issues advance from weekly to monthly. Previously based this on adding 7 days to "today" but now need only add (1) to each month but not sure best way to go about this. For example, you'd like to run your ad with us 3 times. First run date is 3/1/01, number of issues requested is 3 so you'll be covered in 4/1/01 and 5/1/01 editions. Would like to enter 3 and have datebase calculate this automatically. Anyone with insight... your help would be so appreciated.

I am looking for a script that will export records from a quote dbase into 3 quarterly dbases. Basically I need it to export data into (last 90 days), (last 180 days), And so on. It will need to activate on a specific date & time every month. I am also trying to figure out how to launch a script from a value list. If the user chooses (last 90 days) from the value list, the last 90 days dbase will open. I have been toying with the idea & any insight would be a big help. Much Thanks

Am trying to build a report showing unpaid balances brought forward prior to a certain date, and then detailed new charges from that date to present. BBF and Current charges would be totalled at bottom of STatement. Balance Brought forward and current charges are related by customer number. I have worked through some fairly convuluted systems but I am betting that there is a simple way that I have overlooked. Would appreciate suggestions.

I have a filed titled Res_Status. The field is a value list with the options (booked & canceled). Depending on the users choice, it will update a field on the same layout titled Status. The Status field is also a value list with the options (sent to client or removed from client). It will also send or remove information from a related d-base. Hi Guys, Really just a follow on from a previous posting on using dates in FMPro. I have a database which contains seminar information. The end result I'm aiming for is for users to log onto a web site and be given a list of all seminars occurring in that week. Simple enough idea, however I'm having a problem using the "WeekofYear" function. Duration = 86400 * (EndDay - StartDay) + EndTime - StartTime Duration is in seconds. To get days, and hours minutes and seconds: Days = Int(Duration / 86400) HMS = Mod(Duration, 86400) Days should be a number calculated field HMS should be a time calculated field so that it formats as HH:MM:SS. I am currently creating a database for our Upward Bound Program. Part of the grant is to keep track of "contact hours" with our students (weekly/daily). I have created the database and have created fields for each subject area (i.e. composition, college tour, newsletter, etc). Here's the problem I'm having.....whenever I mark a field, say composition, I want it to automatically enter a "1" in the code field; when I enter a "x" in the college tour field I want it to enter a "2" in the code field..... I'm new to FM and coming from 9 months reading general DB theory - now hitting problems transferring theory into FM. How can I implement a composite primary key in FM? In other words, several fields whose values singularly are not unique, but whose combined value must be unique, to be used as a match field in a related file. An example is my current problem: a software database with developer, title and version fields, e.g. 'Microsoft' 'Word' and '5.1'. None of these values are necessarily unique. Is it possible to have a single DB 'aware' of the current date without running a script or creating a record? I know how to do it by running scripts or creating a record but that's not what I need. This is ultimately for a web based solution to generate a "Word of the Day" that is the same for every visitor for that day and then changes to the next one on the next day. I am developing a solution that includes a Itemized Receipt Maker for payments off monthly tuition and other fees. The receipt maker first creates the empty records, then populates the records, and then moves the receipts to a storage file. In the main script that populates the empty receipts there is a loop that stops the script when there are no more payments for that particular account and month. The problem is getting the receipt maker to process all the empty receipt records. I imported 60,000 addresses from another program of ours. Only problem I am having is that I need to split the house number and street names apart. I have a field called address(the imported one),made an address2 field,calculation field using leftwords(address,1).Worked great. Made an address3 field using the rightwords(address,2). Not so good. Address sometimes includes house number or not all the street name, based on the number of words in address. What am I missing here? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm using an excel spredsheet right now but I'm thinking of switchingto a filemaker db. I have a chart of widths across the top and lengths going down. The info is generated via several calculations. Generally there are some rows that are all zeros. So what I have to do is go through and delete the rows and move all the data up manualy which is a pain and allows for some unfortunate mistakes. What I want is to have a calculation that says, if row is zeros, then don't display the row !and! move the list of rows up. Hi everyone! I know this is simple, and I will castigate myself relentlessly when I see the answer (spent many hours last night (till 3am) trying to figure this out....it was more slippery than any Rubik's cube I've ever seen). After an Ebay auction ends, I want to know the Final Value Fee. Simply, I want to type in the amount the item sold for, and have the Final Value Fee show up in a separate field. On items that sell up to 24.99, the FV fee is simply 5 percent. On items that sell from 25.00 to 1000.00, the FV fee is 5 % of the first 24.99 and 2.5 % of the amount over 24.99. Or should I be using something other than IF? Thanxxxx. Mathematical genius not!

I have a problem with a time calc i have three fields tmTotal calc tmUnit * 60 tmSumTotTime calc sum(tmTotal)/60 tmUnit number My summary answers are all wrong even if I assign tmSumTotTime as a summary field manually on my calculator it works out correct, I must be missing something here Help!!! cheers

Dear All I developed a database for a school athletics team about 6 months ago which they have put to great use and got a lot out of it. It is a relational database, with seperate files for Athlete Information, results, etc. The date of birth (DOB) of all 170 odd athletes is entered in the database in an appropriate field. What I need to be able to do, is make a script to take this DOB information and classify athletes into age groups as follows: Under 13, Under 14, U15, U16, U17 and Opens. Basically, I want to be able to specify a particular cut-off date (for exampe, 30th May) and have the script work out which age bracket each athlete fits into. I probably havn't…

I have a payables system that up until this point has worked for all purposes. Now our corporate would like me to add a Comparative Expenses Report from the payables system. At this point I am able to generate a General Ledger Distribution Report by finding the month then sorting it by GL #. The report gives a total for each General Ledger number in the preview mode. I would like to take the totals from the General Ledger report and place then on the new report. I have made a new layout and put the GL # and GL Name field on the report but when I look at the report in browse mode I get an entry for each transaction. I do a lot with schedules. Due dates & times, end dates and times, etc. I would like to create a calculation field which signifies one of three things: On Schedule, Completed On Time, Completed Late. To do this, it will need to compare the end date and time with the due date and time. Can anyone suggest a way to accomplish this? Can anyone please help. I would like to create a field which contains the date range to search on. I ask my users to enter the date range in two different fields. and then i need to combine these and get FM to search on the calculated result. Our db has approximately 40 different TextToDate fields formatted as date and more than 2000 records to update on a regular basis. It has recently become necessary for us to search for students whose last screening date ( vision or hearing, etc.) falls on a specific date. Our find layout has a date field but it isn't working for the TextToDate searches, returning a "no records match" message despite knowledge to the contrary. The calc fields all display as 1/14/2001. This is the same format we type in the date field in find mode. Help, what are we missing?

I am wondering if anyone knows what the fastest way to perform calculations are: See Example 1 vs 2: box1= (DayOfWeek(Date(month,1,year))=1,1,"") box2 is related to box 1 box2= Case(DayOfWeek(Date(month,1,year)=1,2, DayOfWeek(Date(month,1,year)=2,1,""). I have 2 excel calculations that I need in our FM database. It can be done in PC or Mac. Is there any company out there or anyone here that can do this for a fee? Most companies have a huge upfront fee so anyone here is preferably. Also I am looking for help with CDML. The needed calculations are APR (mortgage loan rate) So far I found a shareware program that does one of my APR calcs, but it will not allow multi records so I must use it in a relation database.

I have 3 databases (Advertiser, Rate, Invoices). In the advertiser file I have a field called contract frequency. In the rate file I have a rate code field of 3DR with the possibility of 9 different rate amounts based on frequency and size of ad. I can't seem to get the correct rate to show up in the Invoices file when I call on the rate code. I thought it would be by using a if calculation, but I never get past the first result. Thanks to anybody that might help me get past the dingbat zone?

Hi Can anyone give me a plain text translation of the following statement from John Mark Osborne's Format.fp3 solution: Case(Mod Time, Serial, Serial)? Specifically, I am trying to figure out what it means in a case statement when the test condition does not contain a comparison operator (such as "Mod Time>12:00"). I read it as "If Mod Time has any value, insert the value for Serial into [the field being calculated]; if it doesn't have a value, do the same thing." Is it possible to have a unique product code and yet have multiple pricing based on size. I want to have only 3 product codes but based on size and frequency it could mean nine different prices. If this impossible, I will split the prices into different product codes, just harder for employees to remember. Thank you in advance for any advice on whether to continue to try and solve.
