I need some expert advice. I am using FMP to generate announcements for a class web page at a university. I have the professor use a web-based entry form for the records. For the body of the announcements, he needs to be able to use indentations and other formatting styles that he writes in a visual-based web design program. I want him to be able to just cut and paste the HTML straight into the announcement field. When he does it as is, it scraps all the code and treats it as text. Is there a plug-in to do this, or is it simply a matter of writing extra CDML into the page to recognize HTML. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am using File Maker Pro 5 to create a school e-mail service to inform teachers when they are to cover lessons. However when I import the information about the staff the data for one record is automatically divided into 2 different records, is it possible to combine 2 records, because if it isn't I will have to send each member of staff 2 e-mails, which is very unhelpful. It's times like these, i feel inadaquate (like when i can't spell too . . .) Anyway, this seems like it would have to have a simple solution, but i just don't know it. I have to develop a inventory control that keeps track of different companies shells (printing term). It obviously needs to subtract and add from the number of Quantity on Hand each time some are removed or added. I was thinking initially 3 DB's. Main with all company info and Current QOH. I run an automobile dealership here in Arizona and am looking for something that will allow me to keep track of the number of contacts, sales, write-ups, demos etc that my salespeople are taking. Is there any template or fully written program I can use with filemaker out there. I have a customer DB I have a job DB which has a menu filed for customers. It also has a radio field for open or closed. I have a invoice DB which will have 2 fields to connect it with a customer and a job. After choosing the customer, I would like the job field to only show "open jobs" for the customer previously choosen. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm using FMPro 4.0 on both a Mac 9600 with 248mb ram and a G4 with 384mb ram, and on both systems, all FM dialog boxes display text that is small, jagged and compressed to the point that it is unreadable in most cases. It has done this from day one. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? None of my other programs do this. Thanks, Michael McKenzie

When using the "Send Mail" script step, what happens to the "mail" that you want to send? How does FileMaker communicate with your email server. I am using FileMaker 4.1 on a Mac that is connected to Tufts University's network. I use Netscape for email. I have been told that FileMaker can't export email to Netscape so I downloaded Eudora and set that up. I am still baffled. I would like to be able to send a personalized email message to members of our mailing list. I can export a usable list of email addresses easily enough, but I was hoping to use the "Send Mail" feature to personalize them. Anybody know how to do this? I am currently using FMP 3.0v4. I am trying to set up a report that will give me turnaround time of working days (mon-fri) on how long it takes to complete jobs. I've set up two fields and date in and a date out. Using these 2 fields I'd like to calculate the number of days. For example if a job comes in Thursday and out on Monday I'd like the result to be 3 days. Please let me know if there is a way of doing this. Thank you in advance

On the first of january 2002 a dozen countries or so in Europe will convert to a new currency, the Euro. Like every other currency this one has a special symbol (like $, or fl). I am trying to find a way to get a summary of how many projects were done this year. The way my database is set up is that for each sku there is a separate record. However eash project has several sku's with the same project number. I want a summary that will count all records that have the same project number as 1. For example: Project # 463-01 has 4 sku's Project # 475-01 has 10 sku's Project # 480-01 has 2 sku's in total there is 16 records created what I am looking for is a summary that will let me know that 3 projects where done. Does anybody have a solution for including formatted text in a calculated field that is used for the Email Body? I have a calculated field that emails users Username and Password back to them and I would like it to look like this: Save this information for future use- Username: Whatever Password: Password I type the calculated field this way but when the email is sent, no carriage returns are displayed and the text just shows up in one long sentence.

It might be the time of year (miracles and Santa Claus) but when I delete a record in a related file (invoices) the record also dissapears in the adressfile! I checked the relation and the box for whiping related records if the record is deleted in the active file, but it's unchecked. What's going on??? Sorry, but how can a cost be <25 and >50 at the same time? Give this a try. Case( Cost <= 25, Cost * 2, Cost <= 50, Cost + 30 Cost <= 100, Cost + 50 Cost <= 200, Cost + 75, 100) The last value is a default, if none of the tests succeed. Capt Kurt: I want to transfer all of items in all of the value lists to the new solution, as well as other global values. Since the solution may exist on hundreds of PCs (or thousands if I'm lucky), it must be a totally automated process. I know I can get the value list items out using the design functions, but how do I put them into a new solution? What about other globals that need to be moved? Someone must have needed to do this before me!!!

I am a systems manager new to a school and I am currently creating a database of student records as well as schedules of each class. The way my database is setup is one layout that would contain that student will all information classes, grades, first name, last name broken up into 12 quarters. Then separate layout for each quarter for grades classes, class location, teacher, and day, ECT. I have a large number of fonts on my system because I do a lot of graphics work. Whenever I start FMP5 it takes it forever to load because it scans through all my fonts. Is there any way to stop FMP5 from scanning all the fonts? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi I know you shouldn't style individual text elements within a field but... I need a calculation to find italic/Bold text within a text field and replace with "tag & StyledText & tag" (any plug-ins out there). or if this is not possible, have a dictionary of words that should be replaced. Hi. When exporting the ''return'' key in a text calculation field and importing into Quark Xpress I actually get the ''enter'' key which forces a new text box in quark instead of just returning the line. I have tried using <n> an Xpress Tag that gives a soft return to bodge the job, but this isn't ideal. Grateful for any ideas. Cheers.

This would be done by creating a "compound key" upon which to base the relationship. For instance, in a timecard database is would be fairly inconvient to have a separate file for each employee's timecard records. With a simple key, each entry might be a date. With a compound key, each entry in the timecard file could be based upon an employee ID and a date. For instance: CmpdKey (calculation, text) = Right("0000" & EmpID, 4) & Date The perferred solutions is to use one file. For example, with four separate sections a report needing data from all four would be very difficult to create. -bd

I have a small network (up to 8 users) running an application in Filemaker v4.01 Would like to install the Server version to improve performance, but I can't find it anywhere! (I used to see it all over the web, but since version 5 came out, nobody carries v4 anymore. Puzzles me, as from what I understand, the 2 versions are not compatible to be networked, so there should still be a large demand for the older version) Any help is appreciated

Hi All-- I am currently working on a database containing over 100 layouts. However, I will end up with over 200 layouts by the time the project is finished. I have these reports grouped under a heading like (QTR1 Reports, QTR2 Reports, QTR 3 Reports, Yearly Reports, etc.) The new upgraded version of FileMaker Pro only displays 1 column of layouts (instead of all layouts in multiple columns) with an down arrow so you can navigate to the other layouts, very slowly! This just makes creating other reports very time consuming. Need help resolving this: I have a DB that allows clients to assign dates to records. When those dates have arrived FM does a search for records whose dates are valid and displays the items. It works like a To Do list. Problem is this: Clients need to be notified daily of birthdays. Birthdays are in the past. So a simple Status (Current Date) match does me no good, but I need to be able to find birthdays that are today and any days that have not yet been checked. (If my clients do not run Filemaker for a few days, they need to be notified of all birthdays that have happened since the last time they were notified.) Hi All, Have a big problem with printing in Filemaker (version 4.0). I have a database designed for a company. The main purpose of the database is to generate reports. The reports tend to be big, like 200 plus pages. The printer (which is shared) is linked to one computer (windows 98)in the network (windows 95/98/NT network). If anyone sends the report to print through the network to the printer it prints about 30 pages and then just feeds the rest blank. They called me and I went in and did a workaround. I set up filemaker on the computer that had the printer. It still printed only 30 or so pages and fed the rest blank. I determined that maybe it was a memory problem …

I have been supplied a Microsoft Access Database, and was wondering what would be the best way of importing it into Filemaker Pro. Could I use the ODBC driver for Access? I am on a Mac, and understand that Access is not available on Mac, but could I do the import from a PC?.....Or, should I export the data into an Excel spreadsheet, then import it into Filemaker. I have tried this method, but it didn't export all my records...only 65536 out of the 79000+ records. Is there a limit?

I can't get auto-filled data to appear in a new record.htm so the user can see the info for those fields. After the record is submitted the info is there correctly but it doesn't show in the new record.htm. I've tried to use the cdml tag: [FMP-Field artNumber] in a textbox and not in a textbox as is used for the display. I have a web page where I have automatic filled fields for a new record. Unfortunately I can not seem to get the auto-filled info to be displayed when adding the record. It appears the problem is that the dB is not being accessed BEFORE displaying the new_record.htm in order to display the auto filled areas. How do I get the web page to see the auto-filled areas so it can be seen by the user as the record is created. For some reason, Filemaker Pro 5.0 v3 takes over 2 minutes to initialize when I first run it on my Win95 Pentium PC, 64M RAM. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and still a problem. Resetting cache doesn't help. I also tried installing it as a test on a good Win 98 running laptop and it initialises fine there. MS Access also starts up just fine on both machines. FM used to be much quicker in the past on this machine. Anyone know what it's doing for so long behind the splash screen and Initializing.. message? Mike

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has run into this problem & if they were able to solve it? When printing a report with a field that is larger than one line & it is set to slide up & reduce the size of the enclosing part, there is a large blank area at the end of a sub-summary when near the bottom of the page, instead of continuing to print. While not the end of the world, I was hoping someone knew of a way to avoid having this blank space appear. Thanx in advance, I hope I'm being clear. I am unable to create ODBC DSN entry for a FM database. The FM drivers appear in the list; however, I am unable to create a System DSN or User DSN. I am able to create a File DSN; however, this setup is much slower than User DSN and even slower than System DSN. Has anyone else encountered this problem before? I am new to FMP and I am having problems with relations. I have four DBs. One contains information about user (Name, Address, etc). The second contains information about the vendor (Name address, etc.). The third contains information about sales using info from the other DBs. The fourth contains a list of Cities, States & Zips). I need a 3rd field (call it 'Dates') that will do a calc that I cannot figure out.... I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I've tried following the manual but that was hopeless. With sentences like -"The master file for one relationship can be a related file for another, and a related file of one relationship can be a master file for another." I have a scrolling text field which is physically located on Layout Pg 1. The text field is rather long (about 2 full pages). When I print Layout Pg 1, the scrolling text truncates at the lower limit of the physical page. I am using fm 5 and have created an invoicing app. I have inv_hdr and inv_items tables related by invoice number. In my customer table, each customer has a discount level of 1-10. My products each have a price for each of these values 1-10. So if a customer who has discount level 3 is created an invoice for product "abc" the invoice lineitem would retrieve the price that is in retail3 from the products table and place it on the invoice line item. This all works well on the second and greater line items of the invoice, but not on the first line item. I use summaries to print checks. Thanks to Bob Weaver, I can now number the checks sequentially. My problem is I need to put a checkmark beside each check number when I reconcile, and of course you can't enter a checkmark when in Preview. I don't want to export to Excel. Anyone have any ideas?

The difficulty is that many desired finds are composed of records from multiple lists. Thus, I am combining all lists into one master database. Simple enough... Hello all. I hope someone has an idea for me: We have a Job Info file that contains project Job Number, Start date, Ship date, estimated hours, etc. We also have a Calendar file that, when using portals and relationships, we had it pull the Ship Date for each job and place it on the correct day. (Our calendar is set up as 1 record contains 1 week)... Also in the job file, using a FileMaker Tech Info article, we are able to calculate how many business production days we have (No Saturdays or Sundays) between the Start Date and the Ship Date. Using that number (say 10), we divide that by the estimated hours (say 400) to get hours needed per day to complete the project. …

I have a portal from a media library database. The media library has a field that notes which project each tape in the library belings to. There is also a project database, in which there is a portal that lists all of the tapes from the media library that are for each particular project and is related by the library's project number field and the project detail's current project number. I am new to Filemaker. I have the job of changing an existing file that has a repeating field in it (6 repeating unique payments). Which I have to show calculations for commissions with things like (Should Be Sold Price : / Total Lot Price * $ Value Shipped) for several sales people in a repeating fashion. I currently only seem to get 00.00 on entering new payments! I tried get repeatition but this only seems to work for one. How do you set up repeating calculations....perplexed!

I would like to see if I could create a field that will give me a running count of record used in a cretin field. Example: I have a value list with "boy", "cat", "dog" in it. I would like this NEW field to contain a running total of all the records that are using "boy", totaling with a Number. So if "boy" were used in 6 of my records this field would contain the number 6. Problem is this - I have created a cheap "installer" using Aladdin's Stuffit. I create a self-extracting archive and it extracts the files of my runtime solution on the desktop of the windows user. I have it place a shortcut on the desktop so the application can be easily opened. When users start the program using the shortcut, they are notified as each file opens that the files are write-protected and cannot be modified. If they open the files directly by clicking the application icon, the files open and can be modified. -No problems- Any ideas?

I have a service call database. I need to assign a unique number for each call. The first part of the number is the date. The second part of the number is to be the number of calls taken that day up to that point. So, the first call on January 4th 2001 will be #010104-001. The fifth call on that day will be #010104-005. The second call on January 5th 2001 will be #010105-002. Any clues on how to generate that 001, 002, 003 sequence and then restarting the next day automatically. Thanks.

The straight forward (and clean) solution is to put all four price lists in the same file and use the index to select one. Another option is to use four layouts, one with a portal to each of the four files. Any one who will listen, I know every one hates repeating fields here but I was thinking... If I use a main file with a standard field containg "x". And I have a releated file with repeating field containg 2 records with values "x,y" for rec 1 and and "y,x" for rec 2. Both records are accessable via the relationship. I have a company file and a related contacts file. I am keeping track of the contact phone numbers in a repeating field. I know, I know, don't use repeating fields. But, over in Company I can see all of the contacts for the company in a portal. As I enter or highlight a contact in the portal, how can I show the phone numbers for the contact? I thought if I just put them on the layout they would show up. However, only the phone numbers for the first record in the portal show no matter which contact I am working on in the portal. Thanks.

In FM 5.0, is there still a limitation on text-based relational keys of no more than 20 characters? One of my relationships is creating odd results that could be explained by this limitation. Hello, I have a web page that makes a find request to a articles DB using a single text field, the value of this field is used to find the articles in the database. I thought that if I captured this value I could then do a calculation field that could give me the number of occurrences of the search term, this could be done with a PatternCount function, and this way I could sort the found articles by their relevance. How can I do this? I have not found a function to catch the current search word. I thought there was a CurrentParthArgs or something with web companion but I can't seem to find it. I am trying to delete a container field; however, it is not doing anything. I have already removed the field from the layout and when I try to delete the Container field from the list of defined fields, nothing happens. I don't get a confirmation, warning, can't perform operation, you don't have rights...NOTHING. I need to know how to perform an "if" function within a relationship/portal. For example, File A is related to File B using 2 relationships. One relationship is based on a number, the other relationship is based on a profile. It is possible (and probable) that a record in File A will be related to a record in File B using both the number relationship and the profile relationship. I need to run 2 different reports - one based on the number and one based on the profile. I have two db's, one for construction sites, one for all of the separate jobs we do at each site. There is a portal in Sites that shows the jobs. I have script in Jobs that sets a global field with the Site number and then runs an external script in Sites that finishes the job by entering find mode, setting the Site number field to the freshly populated global field back in jobs and then performs the the find. It works. So all is well. But, when I try and go back the other way, it stalls. have 800k records. sorted by nsn's (field 1). want to sort by Field 1 & Cage code (field 2). Want to find & delete duplicate records only if field 1 & field 2 match = duplicate. Did counter if statement(if counter=relation::counter "unique","duplicate")this gives me 4 solutions: Unique - U, U-dupe,d-u, & D-D. want to delete d-d. this is related to my last posted question. . . okay, i used the sort function in the portal to put the completed actions on bottom, but i ran into a problem. On the data entry screen, i also use a portal to put in new actions, and if the portal is sorted by whether the action is complete or not, then the actions are out of order. So if i put something in yesterday that i completed and something in today that i haven't completed, today's shows before yesterdays. i don't want this on the data entry screen, jsutthe reports screen. To be honest I'm not familiar with Instant publishing. Do the scroll bars appear in other browsers like Netscape, or different versions? If they do not, then it's an IE rendering "feature" and there's not much you can do about it. If they appear in all browsers, then it's probably meant to be like that. Try selecting a different style or appearance and see if that helps. Otherwise either learn to live with them, or turn your hand to custom web publishing.
