FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

Hi everybody, I'm trying to develop a database for our afterschool program to keep a record of our tutees and volunteers. I'm having problems with making the database navigable without using the FMP menu. My question is how I can make a button whose action allows me to go to a specific layout in a related database. Right now, I have the button open the file, but it goes to the last layout and view mode. I know that the script instructions following "OPEN file" will execute in the file where the script exists, but how do I make the script continue in the file I just opened? I'm running FMPro 4.0 on some PC's I have connecting to a MAC workstation housing the FMPro dB. I changed everyone from one domain to another and now when they try to connect to the dB, all they get are memory errors. Anyone ever see this before ? Thanks, Tom

I'm afraid I have an idiot question, but when you're desparate, idiot quesitons have to be asked. I am currently developing a database in Filemaker Pro v4 for the Mac, and, ultimately, this database will be used on Filemaker Pro v4 for Windows. Whilst it is easy to get the raw material (ie fields and contents) into a Windows version, I am having no success with exporting either the layout or the relationships. File A: Sales Person ID Name Picture (Container) File B: Sales Person ID Name Picture (calculation: Sales::Picture Relationship in file B: Sales: Sales Person ID = Sales Person ID (in file A) Or you can use last name, but i wuld recommend you have a unique number, Last name would assume that only one Jones or one Simth could ever be in your File A database. For the ease of entering, I would like just to type in date as numbers, and the same with time (without using separators). Example 24 hour format: for 13:30, just type 1330. Example for date: for 15.10.00, just type 151000. But AFTER I press tab (or enter), FM must convert these fields to appropiate format, i.e. time xx:xx and time xx.xx.xx. How do I do that??? I'm new to FM for the Mac, having recently purchased FM4 and now having just upgraded to FM5. I set up a FM4 database with a picture field in which I have 200 pixel high jpeg images. I already have hundreds of pictures,in the database. However, when I open the FM4 database in FM5, the 200 pixel high jpegs are just a few pixels high. They also print at the miniature size. As a test, I then imported the same original 200 pixel high jpeg into FM5, but while the picture is a little larger than the converted jpeg from FM4, but still barely 1/3 of its original size. Is FM5 doing something different with jpegs that makes it impossible to convert globally from FM 4 to FM5, or…

I am trying to assign serial numbers to a database, with one small difference. I would like to put a text suffix in the front of the number. For example I have once field with a name (about 6 different names). When it creates the serial number I want to take the first letter from the name and put it in front of the serial number. please help

How can I make a script that pritn several copy of a current record?

I have a database located on an NT server which I open as multiuser. The database imports records from a text file and manipulates the data putting data in different fields. All works well when the database is opened with a Mac and the data is imported. On a PC, opening the same file and trying to import the records results in no records being imported although the script appears to execute. Whats happening? Why can any Mac do it (other than being a superior platform) and a PC can't?

I am new to the world of Filemaker development, with many questions. Could anybody comment on the possibility of attaching files (word document lets say) to a record in a filemaker database shared with the web companion. Also, is it possible to edit a record online to include an image file? We have a videotape database we use to print out VHS spine and top labels. We have two printers set up (one spine, and one top). The print dialog always sets the printer to the default (top) printer. I am attempting to make a website for the first time using Homepage 2.0. . I have registered a domain name with a company that will host my site and supports FTP transfers. Anyhow, when I attempt to upload my site using FTP, a window pops up saying that the site has been uploaded. However, there doesn't seem to be a connection being made through the FTP client to the web. Any suggestions?

I use summaries to generate checks. I have the summaries already done, but I need to assign check numbers to each summary by entering the starting check number and have Filemaker number each summary. Does anyone have any ideas short of exporting and importing the summaries? Has anyone been able to use "two-character" fonts such as Chinese or Japanese in FMP 5? Is there Plug-in support for these? In Win NT 4.0, when I set the preferences to TCP/IP when logged in as the administrator, it is only set for the admin. When any other user logs on to the workstation for the first time they must set the network preference. Does anyone know if the network preference can be set for all users one time? Thanks, Tom

I have a related file that is supposed to give each new record a serial number, incremented by 1 from the previous record, whenever the record is created. I discovered that some records were being overwritten when new records were created. When I checked my field definition for the serial number I found the the serial number seemed to revert to a previous number. For examlpe, instead of reading "1200" as the next number, it read "680". This caused records to share the same serial number. I used the previously posted information to enable filemaker files to be emailed from Outlook/Entourage and it works like a dream - even the url code for hard returns works great too.... I have only one problem, if my copy to be e-mailed contains the "&" symbol (ie: B&W, or R & S) the e-mail contents end just before that point. Is there a way to permanently resort all the records in a database? Would one use the Copy all records step?

Is there a fast script that will create a new record and then omit all records but the new record, without creating a serial number for each record and doing a search for the new one? I think there might be a faster way to accomplish this, but I can't think of it.

Hopefully I understood your request You want a Table of all your records? How about using the FMPro tag to call a script inside FM. Get the script to Export all your records as an HTML table and then get you link to point to this file.

I have a Quoting system which uses the Line_Items principal, however we need to be able to recall old quotes to convert to a new job (new quote number), so we can add new items but keep the originals etc. Currently the Quote details duplicate ok and a new quote number is assigned but the Portal Data is cleared, This is obviously because of the relationship created by the unique quote number. I have a database I wrote that consistently and repeatedly crashes when running under Windows 98 (program performed an illegal operation and will be shut down...). My problem is that I have created a database of 49 records, but when I try to print them by creating a separate layout as Avery 8160 labels I only get 43 labels (this is on A4 paper). Hi, I'm looking whether Filemaker Unlimited is good for us. We need an intranet front end for some databases. FM "can" ODBC, but as far as I understood you have to first "download" the data into the FM database and then you can show them with the web server. Is this true or is it possible to link FM online via ODBC directly (like "linked tables" in MS Access) to a database (eg. sybase) or even manipulate through FM and ODBC the data on it? I just spent the last 6 weeks slaving away on my first major fmp application. All the development was done on my own machine locally. My company has a G3 machine several states away that they want to serve this database from. The database does everything at light speed when run locally but when we put it up on the server it ran so slowly that its practically unusable. I knew we'd take a performance hit when we put it on the server but this is rediculous. It takes as much as 100-200 times longer to perform the same operations. I have a database used as a dokumentation db of ours digital- and screenprint. It is on 7000 pages. On each pages there is a containerfield with a screendump (jpg) of the image. We are a couple of peorple using the db and some of them forget to choose "Store only a reference to the file". That makes the db very large and very slow. Well, I know what the problem is, and the general idea of how to fix it, but not the specifics. Basically, carriage returns won't show up properly in a URL unless they are encoded. If you've worked with URLs much with web development, you might know that sometimes you have to insert the characters "%20" when you want a space in the URL. I know you need to do something similar with carriage returns, but don't know what the code is. I did some checking on the web but couldn't find the answer. Find out what the code is for a cariage return, and then use the Substitute function to replace the carriage returns in your field with the URL code. Then set the new calculated …

I have a field storing text. I have the field formatted for Times 9 point. Alot of times I get text from a Word document by selecting all and copying it, go to Filemaker Pro 5 and paste it into my text field. When I do this the text pasted is formatted with the font and size of the Word document. My Filemaker field won't force the text format and the pasted text. Then when I print to text from FMP I don't get it all because it's to large. How can I incorporate an automatic format text script into my print script in FMP? hello, all...i have a user running a cel 333 w/64MB and a huge HDD, and FM v4.1 initializes really slowly (4-5 mins). i reinstalled the software w/out any updates or patches and i have the same behavior w/ FM. there are no other CPU-intensive progs running, but the user is running WinFax (essentially a TSR). the HDD has already been defrag'd...any suggestions?

I've been trying to access a shared filemaker pro database on a filemaker 3 server and it can not find the host ip address. Even when I enter the host ip manually, it insists there are no databases there. Several other computers share this database with earlier versions of Filemaker Pro. Can Filemaker Pro 5 not access multi-user databases on a filemaker 3 server? I recieved this error message when manually browsing to the database. ""filename" is currently in use and could not be opened. The file is single user or the host could not be found on the network."

I would like to play existing .WAV files by inserting them into global container fields. I tried pasting one from the clipboard. If I double click on the field in Layout mode, the sound plays but not in Browse mode. How do I get the WAV in, and how do I get the sound to play under script control without using a plugin?

I have a FileMaker Pro database which I did not create that I need to export to a .csv file for insertion into MySQL and creation of a web interface. I'm having two problems. First, I can't seem to get FMP 4.1 for Windows to export the field names. This is not a huge deal as we can probably work around it (is it okay if I just open the csv in Excel and add them in there?), but it would be nice for them to export intact. In one of my databases that I have been working on recently, all of a sudden I cannot add fields to the layout. I don't get an error of any kind, and it looks like the field is going to add, but all that ends up on the screen is an empty box. I've opened other databases and they are all working fine. The only change since I last worked on this one is that I emailed it to the user for review and she emailed it back - she's on a Mac system and I'm on a PC. But, I also tried opening the backup version that I saved before importing hers, and it has the same problem, so I don't think that the trip to the Mac and back caused the problem. Any ideas???

I have built a database for my Customer Service people that is used to track high resolution scans. This database has a container field that a picture is placed into. When a picture is placed into the fileamaker database, the size of the database GREATLY increases (200 to 300k each time). When this database starts to accumliate many records, it becomes large and slow. Is there a way to minimize the size increase when placing pictures?

I have a copy of FMPro standard on Nt Server 4.0 sP6 and a client W98 with another copy of FMPro. When I open it on the Nt Server in multi user mode, I can't find it as a host from the W98 Client. I am trying to automate a find in one database of one field from many records in another database. For example. I have a list of job numbers that when searched for if records are found, these found records need to be moved (archived) to another database. This list of numbers can be a bit long and entering find mode and either typing or copying and pasting each number every time becomes a problem. I have tried separating the numbers with quotation marks, commas and the words "and" "&" and "or". Does anyone have any suggestions on searching one field for many possibilities?

Does anyone have a good trick for creating a Splash Screen for use with a custom solution? I am on both Windows and Mac platforms so help on both platforms will be great.

My solution opens several (6) related files on opening. Right now it simply goes to the Layout that has data from all the related files. As it opens, I have to wait several seconds for the screen to draw fully because it has to open the related file and then add that part to the Layout. Is there a faster way to get the related files open and consequently get the screen to draw faster?

I have been trying in vain to insert a flash file (button) but the problem is that the file will not play or interact with the users actions. Can flash files be incorporated into flash?? Do they interact??? How???

I have three tiers of records - Invoices, People and Books, and they are suposed to communicate with each other- when I click on a customer to create an invoice it was working fine, but when I entered the record # nothing showed up. The record was marked as sold however, but not appearing on the invoice at all. Also, when I click on the customer ( people) I want to view a previous invoice, the record again is blank on the invoice- yet I know there are several invoices for a certain customer- they all appear devoid of records. Now on a second pass - there are no invoices …

I can't seem to get the script Send Mail to work. The script Open URL(no dialog,"Email Address") with mailto:[email protected] in the current "Email Address" field brings up my Juno e-mail program and I can add subject and text and send that email. But the script Send Mail(no dialog,"Message") with To: specified as field value of "Email Address", cc: left blank, Subject: Text "Message", and Message: "This is a test" does not seem to do anything. (field "Email Address" field in current field contains "[email protected]")

I have verfied that my file size expansion problem described in my post below was due to an IsEmpty function I was using in a script that I had running automatically whenever my file was closed. When I replaced the IsEmpty function with an IF statement, the problem finally went away and has never been seen since. Go figure. This was a pretty big deal because it could have resulted in my file size increasing by about 1mb every week (in addition to other natural increases). In two or three years it could have grown to over a 1gb and this system could be so complex by then that I may never have gotten to the bottom of this problem. Praise the lord.

Hi Guys, I'm exporting records between databases using an intermediate fp5 file to act as a sorting house (i.e. export from database1 to fp5 file, and importing records into database2 from holding fp5 file). However, during the export from the first database I gain 14 blank records, everytime. Any suggestions for a reason? Thanks

Does anyone know how to search a date field to find all dates in a particular month without using two global date fields, one for the beginning date and one for the ending date? I would like to enter in one date and have a calculation figure out how to find all dates for the month of the entered date.

I want to import a txt file that has BOTH tabs (for delimiting) and commas (in fields); but FM imports using the comma as the delimiter. I want to use the tabs, NOT the commas for delimiters. Does anyone know how to do this?

I need help displaying data. Each record in the database contains, among others, fields for teacher number, period taught, course taught and period iteration (i.e., whether the course is the first among those taught that period, the second, etc.) I want to display in a table format the courses taught by teachers by period. The teachers should appear in rows and the periods in columns, with the names of courses in the intersections. (To complicate it, sometimes a teacher will teacher more than one class in a period, but that's not really a problem.) We are currently evaluating FileMaker Pro Unlimited for use within our company, and have found very few resources available other than marketing info. I have not been able to find any tools or utilities that would allow printing of various defined layouts from within the browser. Is the browser's print command the only method of printing from within the browser? Assistance would be much apprecitated.
