Currently we are using FM Server 5 and FM Pro 5.5. (Both in classic OS) I have approx 75 files on the server, and between 15 - 18 users logged in at any one time. Sporadically users will get disconnected from the server with the message that they have lost communication with the host, or it just freezes. A couple of times this has affected most users, but never all, and for the most part it happens to 1 or 2 users at a time, with some experiencing this almost daily, others randomly. It is not an overall network issue, because they still have connectivity to the internet and our Apple Share server. In the Server logs the message is always the same "FileMaker Server Warning…

I'm at my wits end. I've been trying to get the Sequelink 5.4 ODBC driver to work with FileMaker 7 Server Advanced, but I just can't get it to work. When I go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC) I try to create a data source using the Sequelink driver, but when I click on 'Test Connect' I get the error: [DataDirect][ODBC SequeLink driver][sequeLink Client]TCP/IP error I've tried setting the SequeLink Server Host to localhost and 127.0.0.1 I've tried setting the SequeLink Server Port to 2399, 19996, and 19997. (yeah, I've been told many things) I already copied the xDBC.fmx and the xDBC Support Folder copied to my…

Hi, I'm currently querying our database and I having a hard time understanding as to why I am not getting the correct results in my find query. When i do the query in FileMaker, I get the right results however when I make the same query with an HTTP request, I get the wrong results. I can't understand what is wrong? What I am querying is a layout that has a person's classes, the fields that I am searching againsts is their StudentID (indexed text field) and one unstored text calculated field. Again performing the query within FileMaker gives me the right results. On the other hand, HTTP Request gives me wrong values. Below is the HTTP request fmi/xml/fmre…

Currently we are using FM 5 and all computers are running in Mac Classic OS (At least 9.1, most 9.2.2). We have placed opening scripts under the Apple menu and this is where endusers are used to looking in order to connect to the files on the server. How will they connect in 7 using OS X? I assume creating the scripts is pretty similar. I just need to know where to put them, and how endusers will access it. I have yet to work in FM 7, so I apologize for the newbie question, but any insight will be greatly appreciated.

I think it important to share things that, unfortunately, we learn the hard way. A year ago, I confessed to importing and forgetting to re-set auto-enter serials. That was a hard lesson that scrambled my data. Today, another lesson was learned the hard way ... I've been dragging my feet in installing Server 7 Advanced (for several reasons). Those reasons seem feeble at the moment. Why? Well, for four months, I've backed up our peer-to-peer or LAN or whatever you call it ... 5 networked systems. I backup by Saving A Copy As and have NEVER needed to grab a backup copy. I back up every 10-20 minutes faithfully! Well, that is, until today. This morning, our…

We will be upgrading to OS X (Panther) in the near future, as well as FM 7 and FM Server 7. I would like to set up a test server and client first to see how they interact. We purchased the upgrade option of FM 7 and FM 7 Server. 2 Questions: #1 Not worried about setting up the client because I have ample copies of FM 5 and 7, but I have 1 copy of FM Server 5 with the 1 copy of the 7 upgrade. If I set up a test server is there a way to move that copy to our 5 server without infringing on the license? #2 How would I set up the client and Server to network with each other w/o interfering with the current networked copy of FM 5 Server

I have FM5 Pro Unlimted on a Win2k Box. Recently having problems with connectiong via host and openning DBs that were able to do before, after creating new win2k user account. We created two accounts on the Win2k Box, one for me, and one for everyone else. We added the startup script for both accounts, and when either log on, it starts, and the web companion works. Problem is: When new account logs in, nobody can connect via host. Ok, so I thought that account needed to be Power User (Didn't Work) so I changed that account to Administrator (Didn't work) The only thing I can think of, is that it has to be the account which installed the FileMaker Pro,…

Every time I open this server-hosted file, it has forgotten where the user dictionary is. I have tried opening it as single user (i.e. closing the server and opening in FileMaker Pro), and then starting it up again with the server, but same problem. Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas on fixing? The dictionary seems to be referenced on a file by file basis. I can select the dictionary in one file and it will be retained untile the file is closed, while at the same time, another file still doesn't see the dictionary until I select it. ( Server 5.5 OSX, client FileMaker Pro or Dev 6 OSX. Clients have experienced this on various platforms. )

I have our FM Advanced Server 7 set up to use windows authentication. It works when accessing the database via a FMP client. When I try to access the same database via IWP, it does not accept my windows username & password. It just keeps prompting me for it. Is this a limitation of IWP? I haven't been able to confirm this. Or do I need to change a setting somewhere. Any help is appreciated! John

I am using Filemaker v5. A newbee myself, i just tried to migrate a user from her old PC to a PC that has not been in use for a while. but it has FM already installed (and the Database was used on it before). I tried to open the host file and select the default database to open when she opens filemaker, but the host list is not populated with the database files. When i click host button, it tries to look for TCP/IP connection and hangs. I know the PC has network connection. then if i try to open the file from the copy of the database that i put on her harddrive, it gives me error 10048 i.e. "Filemaker cannot host a file because of a network error. Files marked as multiuse…

Hello all, I'm trying to do this: I save a cookie in user's browser (I know using sessions variables is much better but right now this means re-write all my CDML converted web site.. I don't think I have the necessary time now).. i use fmxslt:set_cookie() function because is quite simple.. but [color:"red"] I can't kill the cookies .. I tried to overwrite an existing cookie specifying a negative number for expire parameter but it seems not to work. Any ideas? Tnx!

Has anyone seen this? We have databases hoste with FMServer 5.5 on 2000 server. I have a simple script to find some records and summarize the data. Running with Jaguar it takes about 5 minutes, running the same script in Panther takes 60 minutes or more! Confirmed that it was panther by running the same script from another Panther computer, same problem. Any ideas?

I have to synchronise two FileMaker 7 Server. The problem is that where is one of the FileMaler 7 Server, I can't have more than 1 machine, that means that that machine will only run FileMaker 7 Server. One solution is the famous SyncDek who need a 2e computer who run a FileMaker Pro 7 on it. But, like I said, I can't have a 2e machine. Perhaps, that's impossible to do, but if you have any idea, they are welcome !

I just inherited a little FMP 7 environment (server with 5 clients) to admin. When I try to access the server via the Server Admin utility I can't log in, even with the correct password that's been given to me. I can see the server just fine and can log in by pressing the "ok" button (no password in the field) as a guest I guess, but when doing so I can't see any info like the DB files etc. Is there any way to reset the Administrator's password short of having to reinstall the server? If I have to reinstall, what happens to the DBs we have published to the server? Please help me out FMP gurus--Thanks in advance!

We have FM Server 5 running on OS9. There are lots of databases being served, but only one of them seems to be available via ODBC. This was setup some time ago (before I got here) for use with a PC used for UPS shipment processing. The database that PC uses seems to be the only one that is 'visible'. I can access that data from any number of PC based apps (Excel & VB for example) but I can't see any of the others. I'm not experienced with OS9 so I have no idea where to look to 'enable' the other databases for ODBC access. Thanks for any help.

Hello all you wonderful Forum people, I have Server Advanced. We have 8 licensed Users (WinXP), FM7v3, Windows 2000(3?) and a dedicated host system running Developer 7. I admit I've reached this point with absolutely no time to research the process. I have never used any FM Server version before. I haven't even read the book that comes with Server Advanced. My FM focus is process analysis and user-friendly design. I don't even know if Server Advanced gets installed on our Web Server, our Network Server or our dedicated Host! My question is this: Is this going to be a simple matter of installing the software, setting a few privileges and going home? Would y…

Hi, I have FMServer running on an XServe G5 and I have a problem with the back ups. When it comes the time to make the back up, instead of doing it, it "disables" the schedule. If I click again on "allow schedules to run" or "enable schedule", it doesn't make any difference ... it does it again!!! Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance

We are currently running FileMaker Server 7 Advanced (7.0v2) on an Mac OS X Server (10.3.6). We have 3 databases that are hosted on FileMaker Server: Accounts.fp7, CCHolidayTool.fp7 and ISP.fp7 Accounts.fp7 and ISP.fmp7 are normal shared databases. CCHolidayTool.fp7 is a web shared database. When FileMaker Server is restarted it only opens Accounts.fp7. The remaining 2 need to be opened manually. Is there something we are missing that is preventing databases 2 & 3 from openning automatically? Thanks, Mike [color:"blue"]

Not much FMP Server experience, so am running into the following problem, and cannot seem to get around it. I have a solution with the following files: (A) "SOLUTION.FP7". It is a multi-user solution hosted by FMPServer. ( "TEMP.FP7". Used solely by an import/export script from file (A). Not viewable by open remote file dialogs, and is not even a shared file (am I reasoning this correctly?) The script in (A) is supposed to just Export a set of records to TEMP.FP7, then call TEMP.FP7 to import them back (into an separate table) and clear all records in TEMP. All without user interaction (file names are set). Works fine on a standalone machine, but when …

How can make changes to layout and fields, without deleting already created records when I upload the newlayout/field format. I ask this question because I am having to make changes to the database layouts, etc, offline, then uploading the changes. Except while I am doing this, new records are being created. Even if I work with a updated copy, by the time I make the changes a couple of records may have already been made. FMPServer 5.0 resides in its own machine on network. I guess i can close the files and noone can use them? Until i open them back up. However, this makes have to make quick updates, rather than work offline and when I am done with the c…

I have 6 Unlimited and last year was able to uses Hosts to access databases from another machine. I haven't needed to do this for a few months, and now the Hosts list is empty, even when specifying the IP for the host machine. The only change I can think of is that Panther was installed on the host machine, upgraded from Jaguar. The databases themselves (probably 8 or so) have been unused and unchanged in the last few months. They're still multi-user, TCP/IP, etc. I'm not sure this is Panther related, it's just the most recent major change. Any suggestions? FileMaker Version: 6 Platform: Mac OS X Panther

I've read the numerous threads here regarding VPN feasability and alternatives such as terminal services, but I would like to follow up with a discussion related to my specific situation. 2 offices remotely connected through a VPN hardware solution. Both are using ADSL, and speed is currently 1500/256, but soon to upgraded to 6000/600. FMP Server 7 hosted on OSX, clients running FMP7 on WinXP and 2K. There are about 8 clients on the LAN side of the server and 8 clients on the remote VPN side. How will the performance be for the VPN users on DSL of this speed using the standard FMP "Open Remote" connection? Not all 8 VPN clients will access at the same tim…

Just instlled Filemaker Server 7 on a test server and updated the files to this server. Installed Filemaker 7 pro on 3 workstations and gained access to the above server, using the username and password from the previous installation. Everything good there. We want to access the files via Active Directories and have setup the initial group "fmsadmin" and inserted a group of users from the domain. I inserted fmsadmin into the accounts and privileges with External Server and full access. My understanding is that people within this group should gain access to the file and not have to login to the file, that authentication should be from the fmsadmin group on the domain. I ha…

What is the best practice for modifying a FileMaker solution hosted on FMS7? Can FMP client run on the server hardware alongside FMS? With FMS down, can the FMP client be used to do design changes to the solution at the server machine (on a copy, of course)? Can the FMP client be up at the same time as Server? Can all design functions be done from a remote machine with admin priveliges? Any comment will be greatly appreciated. ~Dennis

I have a copy of FM Server that I do not know how to implement. I have a solution that has two users who are allowed to make changes, and four users that are allowed to look at the data, but not make changes. I have kept these files in sync by editing them each week and handing them back to the two users on each Monday, but it is time to turn it over to everybody. I want the four "No Changes Allowed" users to be able to make thier own layouts, do searches, etc. but not be able to change anything in any of the files. The solution consists of…

I have just spent a couple K to transform myself from a capable CDML creator into a helpless XSLT nincompoop. I need help at the what-files-do-i-need-and-where-do-they-live level. ...then you will get a medal of honor from me! Installation of the server and the web publishing engine is piece of cake. But configuring the whole thing is a new thing for filemaker developers. Some of us just don't have the knowledge for configuring web services on a server. I have been able to connect to my FM 7 hosted files on my FM Server 7 machine locally and remotely on the LAN and through the internet. Hello! I wasn't sure exactly where to post this so I figured I would start with the version we are using here at my workplace. Here's the deal... We are slowly but currently migrating to G5 OS X (10.3.x to be exact) and have a number of users using FM 6 on both OS X and OS 9. When I open the database from the OS X Mac, the others in OS 9 cannot open the file. The OS 9 users get an error of: "the file name" is currently in use and could not be opened. This is my first experience posting, and I'm new to FileMaker Server too, but of the 54 tables I've just installed on my server, only 35 appear when I "open remote" through FM7. I can't find any related threads on this topic on this site. Here are some of the things I've checked: My configuration (Mac OS) is set to allow 125 tables. All files are have the same read/write privileges My data log file clearly says all 54 tables "opened". My FileMaker Server Admin program also shows the files as opened. But I can't locate them all using FileMaker 7 for some reason. I see no pattern comparing the ones that don't appear versus the ones that do. By…

I get the following error at the end of the installation process: "Opening Key /LM/W3SVC/1/Root Failed ...default" my only option is to select "Ok" which then leads to a final screen stating that the installation was interrupted and not successful. I noticed that the "Filemaker Publishing Engine" service does not appear in the Services Manager. I am unable to access the Web Publishing Console from the http://localhost/fmi/config. I also took note that the Global ISAPI filter installed by this causes the my app pools on my IIs web server to stop working.…

Does Filemaker Server install on the server and then everyone accesses that server in order to access a solution? Or does each user have to have their own version of Filemaker installed on their computer as well?

After installing FileMaker 7 Server and Server Advanced, I am trying to configure it. I go to http://localhost/fmi/config and a screen comes up to enter an user name and a password (this is the first time I use so there is no username/password setup yet). I choose a username/password and click apply. But the server timesout and I can not proceed to the next screen. Anyone has ideas what I have wrong? I am using IIS as web server and have already unchecked the option "Integrated Windows Authentication" but it still does not work. THanks, THiago

I am looking for a way for my users to upload files into container fields via an Instant Web Published application. I am running File Maker Server Advance, and my users will be accessing through their browser, usually Internet Explorer. I have looked into some PHP scripts, as well as the UPLOADit plug-in, but the scripts are for creating external files and the plug-in does not work with Server. Might someone else have run into this problem, and know of an alternate solution?

I'm running Server 7 on a I'm running a database that has about 10 tables , 260 fields total, several calculated fields, and about 1000 records in the main table. It has plenty of relationships... blah blah blah.. I'm running Server 7 on a Mac with 10.3.6 Well, I just upgraded from a cube 450 G4 to a Dual 2Ghz G5.. with 2.5 Gb of Ram, and don't see such huge speed increases. It seems like it takes a while for the database to load over a network. My layouts have no pictures loading.. so I don't know what it's thinking about.. but I'd like to know! Could anyone offer any advice..?? or direct me toward some reading that talks about how to tweak Server…

I have successfully install FMS Advance working. It's running on Win2003 with IIS but i find the performance to be slower than Instant Web Publishing ON Filemaker 7 Developer. I have tried cacheing the database and increasing the flush time. No avail and also restricting web connections in IIS to 2000 which is our school population. The database has only 80 records in a portal and actually took 1-3 seconds to slowly load to the portal. The performance is bareable however any ways of improving it would be nice. Thanks ya.., I will try the patch to v2 shortly.

I have a database I am currently using with 50 people as a stand alone created with Developer Tool. They send me their updates monthly and I compile them, but I'd like to move it to the web. If I buy Server 7... 1. will I have to buy additional software for each user and 2. will my database look and act the same, or will I lose functionality like with Instant Web Publishing? Thanks, Rick

Hello, Is anybody out there using FileMaker Server 7 in a heavily used environment (more than 50 host databases and more than 30 users)? Has anybody ever seen it perform very slowly or crash? We installed FileMaker server 7 on Windows 2003 Server 2x 3.2 Ghz Xeon with 5 GB of RAM. This box is dedicated to FileMaker server. We have about 94 hosted databases and an average of about 80 users on the host at one time. We tried to clean up our databases prior to converting to version seven and did additional cleanup to the databases after conversion. We also have the ODBC plug-in from server seven advanced installed although we have not made in the ODBC connection…

Can anyone tell me how I can use an Opening file from within Citrix? I've created one, but of course, only one user can access it. The second gets a file in use error. I can successfully connect multiple times using <file> <open remote> but this will not be acceptable to me users. We are using a FMP server located at a remote location and operation via the WAN is wayyyyyyyy to slow. Thanks in advance. Bob Clabaugh NW Regional Education Service District

Hi everybody! This is quite a long story, so please bare with me... I am trying to publish a database to a website on my intranet (lan). So I installed filemaker server 7 and updated it with filemaker server advanced for the web possibilities. I've updated the whole thing to 7.0v2 since I like updating. So far so good! I've created a simple database with two fields and loaded it with some records and populated the fields. Next thing was to put the database in the filemaker server so that it would share the database on my network. When I open filemaker I can open the database and edit the fields and so on. I'm still going strong Next I started the filemaker site…

Hello. I installed FM7 Server on my W2K Server (SP4) yesterday and since this morning I have been unable to connect to my FM7 Server using the local server admin mmc plugin. I was able to yesterday but now when you click 'Connect' it just sits there for a while and nothing happens, no error message or anything. I cannot connect via a remote machine as I get the 'not setup for remote admin' message. I have tried rebooting and verified that both services are running, there is no firewall on the machine and nothing has been installed on the m/c since yesterday. If there is a way of enabling remote admin with a registry/text file edit then I could live with it…

Hello, We are using Citrix Metaframe XP with FM client v7.0v3 and FM server 7.0v2 on Windows 2003 standard. I have a big problem, at the moment that more then 1 user is adding record, it overwrites existing records. I tried to catch it with the latest updates, different cache settings, scripts, recovering the file but with no luck. I called to FM support but still no solution. With filemaker 6 in the same situation i never had this problem. Can anybody help me with this? Thanks in Advance. Arthur Poortman

I posted this same question in the OS X server forum, no solution yet. Perhaps someone reading this forum will know the answer. I have setup Filemaker Server 7 on an OS X Server (10.2.8) along with the Web Publishing Engine. So far so good, we have several databases being server locally throughout our company without any major problems. I currently have serveral databases shared via the web publishing engine. Each of these databases has a 'Guest' account with limited privileges available. When accessing these databases with a browser, users are automatically logged in a 'Guest.' This is perfect. The problem is when I want to access the database using a different…

Hi everyone, Have stumbled upon a problem that is soon going to become huge if not fixed ASAP. I am running a database on a server which generates reports for the kids at my school. After we upgraded our machines from 98 to XP, FMP will only allow one user at a time to use it. I think that when our techie created our images he put a single lisence code in because he didn't have access to the correct code. My question is ~ Is there any way to change the installation code to the new volume lisence code Many thanx

I'm in a Mac Network using FM Server 5.5 and FMPv6.0.4. And last week I updated the Server and now the Images do not appear. The Servers and File Locations were all named the same. The Pictures were stored as "use only a Reference" and now only display "Could not draw picture file:sampleimage.jpg". Can the References be reset, other than manually relocating every image (7000+). In FMPv7 I could use a Calculation to show a Container with Path & File Name. How do you fix this in v6? Can the References be reset, or can an entire group be Batched? etc? Please Help. I'm pretty good with Filemaker, except when it fails. Dan

Dont know if this is the right place, but it seemed to do with Network stuff so correct me if I need to post somewhere else. I have NEVER used FMP over a network, but the solution I am creating is going to be used on a network. They plan to place both FMP and the solution on a windows VPN and allow the user to log on and acccess the soluton from there. I can access it via my Mac using MS Remote Desktop Connection and run the Windows FMP and the solution no problem. My question is: Will this work? If multiple users run this solution will it work? Anyway, I thought I would ask the experts out there since networking-wise I am a newborn. Thanks in advance …

I am keeping my test simple. Just use a text box with no special formating and its only goal is to start counting at 001 to 1000 ( This number should change with every new record that is made). We are running filemaker server with 15 users. Once the user sits idle for a small amount of time they are required to reconnect to the server. The server settings are set so that there is not file sharing, the computer will not sleep, idle guests will not be disconnected, 20 concurrent users allowed. Anyone have an idea why the server drops off. Cabling is not suspect.

Hello all, We are currently running FMP 4 databases and FM 3 Server. We have three server installations (independent labs/LANs). On the larger campus network we run FM 3 Server on Windows NT 4 Server. In that instance, most of the clients are Windows 2000/XP. On the remaining two LANs, we run Mac OS 9 for the FM Server and in one instance mostly Windows clients (some Mac) and on the other network, mostly Mac OS 9 and X clients running classic. We also run two installatinos of the old Tango (version 3.1) CGI for Web ordering capability. We are currently developing a new CGI using Lasso 7. Before the roll-out, we would like to upgrade the databases to FM 6 and FM …

Hello Intro: I am trying to get some ideas to this preformance drawback. Background: I am using FMP Server 7 and FMP pro 7 clients. There are 38 Databases hosted on the Server. Pluggin: I am using the 24u SimpleHelp plugin - this generates Help Tags for a Layout. Problem: To implement the Help Tags, they have to be set on each layout of each database. Now we are trying to utilize FMP 7 advantage of not opening all databases on opening. However, the 24u Simple Help pluggin requires the file to be opened and run to attach the Help Tags. This is a huge preformance issue on start up. Right now each Database attaches the Help Tags on the opening s…

Hi, I habe a FM database which can be opened from a server share(not remote host), the file Server is a Mac OS X Server 10.1. The db itself is shared for Multiuser. Then we have a OS X Pather with FM 6 und Jaguar with FM 5.5. Both of them can use the FM db as a mulituser with any problems. And there is a Windows2000 PC with FM 5.5, the PC access the server volume with the SMB protocol. So, here is my problem: When the pc user opened the FM db first, then it will be shared as a multiuser db and mac user, when they click on the db, the FM recognise the multiuser share from the pc and open it remotely from there. But if one of the two Macs open the FM db first…

Ok, here's one that has me totally stumped. I recreated, from scratch, our FileMaker 6 solution in FileMaker 7. This past Saturday, we uninstalled Server 5.5 from the server and installed Server 7. After getting everything configured, and the files properly hosted, I connected to it from my desktop. The connection (using "open remote") went just fine. I was able to browse, edit records, change account settings, edit field definitions, edit scripts, and delete records. However, whenever I tried to create a new record, I got the following error message: "There is not enough room on the disk to complete this operation. Make more room on the disk, then try again." …

Suddenly I am unable to login to FileMaker Server Admin from the local machine. After entering the password 3 times it says "Login Failed". It was working yesterday, the only thing I did last night was look through the various server admin settings (rather quickly, maybe something was altered?). I certainly didn't enter a new password. What could be causing this and is there a way to reset the admin password without reinstalling? (Filemaker Server 7 on Windows 2003 Server)
