    Anyone know what to do...I have a pop up list with client id numbers in an invoice which displays a portal of line items I have entered a dummy record but when I go New Record and select the same client ID number the portal fills with the data from the previous entry - what am I doing wrong?

    I have a layout set up with two portal windows formated the way I would like the records displayed. Both using a self-relationship, date=:date. At the top of the layout I have the date field displayed so that in find mode I can query a date and have all related records appear in the portals. This works fine the trouble I am having is when I want to print. If there are 10 records associated with 3/15/05, all ten records are displayed in the portals but when I print filemaker wants to print 10 pages, one for each record. I get 10 copies of the layout showing all 10 records in the portals. If I am in list view I can scroll down and see the 10 images of my layout, when in f…

    Anyone have a good solution for displaying a portal row in highlight to reflect the current record? Say for example, I have a portal displaying a set of records from the CURRENT table. Not really a self-join but a portal that shows matching records from the current able based on a global. Say, a global set to "New York" and joined to a State field in the current table of contact info. The portal would then show all records with people in New York state.     Hi I got an identical portal placed on two layouts. When I go to the next layout through a button, I want the cursor flashing in the QTY field on the last line of the portal. I manage to activate the cursor on the first line. But I got no idea on how to activate the QTY field in the last line. I am sure there is a way to do that. Any suggestions would be great!

I have what seems to be a simple need: I want to be able to show two levels of one-to-many relationships on the same screen. I have a database for interior decorators.   11. I have some portals that only show some of the details from the actual table. When a user would like to edit those records, there is a button within the portal they may click. Pleasantly, this button disappears when there is no record to show. I would like buttons to add a new record, and to associate an existing record, in a case where there is no related record to show... it would be great to mirror the edit buttons behavior, and hide when the user shouldn't try to use them.     Hi All, My dbase has invoice, invoice line item and item tables. (And others...) I have a portal in 'invoice' which is selectable from a drop down box. I would like to make this list only contain items that are available - thru searching with the date the item is due to go out and the date the item is due back, to ensure that only available items appear in the portal list.     I am new to Filemaker Pro and am attempting to design a genealogy database for my own use. In theory, each individual in the database is assigned their own record displaying birth, death and marriage details etc. Should the individual have children, I would then like a list of the children's names to be displayed with the user being able to select or click on a child in the list which would then display this individual's record.     I have a layout based on my work orders table. On it is a portal to the work order items table. I use this layout in a script to add new related work order item records and it works fine, except when the number of portal records reaches the total portal rows displayed. Then nothing happens. The step Go to Portal Row (Last) no longer goes to the blank portal row at the bottom. Adding a Go to Portal Row (Next) doesn't help either, the focus remains on the last completed portal row and won't move down to the blank row. As soon as I add displayed rows it starts to work again.     Hello, I have a number of uses for putting two portals on one layout. One simple example is for a recipe database. A recipe has many ingredients. On the recipe layout, I would like to show the first ten ingredients in the left portal and the second ten ingredients in the right portal. There is no particular order to the ingredients.   29. In fm 7. I have on one layout with fields to edit records as well as a portal showing related records, and this is in a single table. When I select a related record from the portal, the record comes up to edit. But I don't want the portal to jump back to the top. So if I select record 20 from the portal I want the portal to stay on record 20. I thought by turning in layout mode, "show field frames when record is active" off would do the trick but it don't seem to. Any ideas? Thanks, Doug

    Well, this is sort of a printing issue, but it has more to do with portals. I'm going to be printing a short portal on a form, should be no more than 10 rows. In each row I need it to print the current # and the total number of records. For instance, the form is printing a child's information and I need it to print "Child x of xx" for each one. I'm sure this is possible, but I haven't done enough with pritning related records through portals to know how. I know it's frowned upon printing through portals because it's not the least bit reliable, but I'm being forced to make and EXACT copy of a printed form, so I can't have seperate pages for different print…

I have a checkbox graphic that indicates whether the book has been returned or not ( 1 = Not returned, 2 = Returned). How would this be possible?     In a Client System i have a Field: ClientType which can be set to "Potential", "Active", or "Inactive" From my main entry system, i like to use X join portals to show all the available records for any given system. In this client system i would like the portal to show any given set: All Potential, All Active, or All Inactive (no problem so far)... or SHOW ALL. That's where i hit my snag.     Hello, I'm new to Filemaker... I am trying to perform a Find and have the results shown as a list of rows. Then, when I click on a row, additional fields are displayed below the list in sort of a "preview" area. Kind of like an email program where you have the list of messages, click one, and preview it underneath. I created a portal, which I think is what I need to do.     Just a quickie... I am using a portal to display a single field of related data as a visual cue only. Actually, I'm using a portal to show/hide a set of buttons for performing an operation - it only shows up when I set a flag. The problem is, if the user clicks near the buttons but not on them, the portal that they are sitting in gets selected, and this big area of the screen turns black. Is there a way I can keep portals from being selected like that when a user clicks on them?

  41. I am in the process of building a 'cash register' database. The enclosed files will help explain much better. I initially created the database to be all inclusive in one file. As the line items were entered, the subtotal, tax and total were all calculated on the fly. Everything worked great.     I am a teacher in the process of creating a database for staff use. The database contains a number of portals. In one portal, I have included a print button which shows in every portal row. I had hoped that the print button would use the field data in that portal row and use it in a letter to be printed out. Alas, it is not working as it appears that only data from the first portal row is being used.     Is there a way to create a portal that shows data from two seperate tables. This is what I'm trying to do. I have a table titled builder with a portal. There are two other tables. One is titled Collection. The other is titled DataFiles. Users transfer records from the Datafiles (which is a database of all posible records) into Collection (which is actually what they have). What I need is a way to bring data from Datafiles and Collection into the portal in Builder, and have an icon that tells the user that this record is not in thier Collection.     I have a layout that has portals to two different tables. Right now, it seems to print OK. I've read that this should be avoided but I don't see how with my present set-up and needs.     To have a portal sorted in diferent ways I have the sort order of the relationship based on a calc field, which takes its value from a global field. By changing the value in the global field I change the sort order of the portal. The problem is that I have a mix of text and number fields on which I need to sort. If the calc field is formatted to be a text result, the number fields are sorted as if they are text - for example in ascending order I get 1, 105, 2, etc. If the calc field is formatted to be a number result, the number fields sort correctly but the text fields don't. Is there a way round this?

  48. I am working on an invoice layout. I have an invoice line items portal on the invoice layout. We have too many products to have the product ID field in the portal be a drop down list. So I created a script that would pop up a window showing all of the products. The user clicks into the product id field of the product they are adding to the invoice and then clicks a button. The button I had going back to the portal and go to last portal row and pasting the product id value into it. It isn't consistently going to the last portal row.     I was under the impression that relationships could work beyond one level in portals and such in FM7, but, alas, i am not getting the desired results. DB's: Vendor, Category where Vendors can have an unlimited number of Categories assigned to them.     I have a portal that contains information about various projects. I set it up to sort the records by project number. I'd like to give users the ability to change the sort criteria. For example, they may want to sort the records by status, or by date. It works fine for the most part, but if you change the printer then the printable range changes and I have to go in an modiy the layout. Is there a way to link to portals? There may be 20 different rows in the portal. How do I write the script to navigate back to the same portal row I just pasted the text from?

    Hi, In order to stop bad user entry into my database, I need to stop more than 40 orders in total being placed. A customer can have 5 orders, 5 "active" orders that are not set to cancel. But basically the user enters the orders via a portal relating to the orders table. I need a way that when they click the Weightneeded which is a popmenu of weights, a way to check that there haven't been 40 orders. So far i have tried adding a script to the field but i just get loads of problems like the dialog wouldn't show and it wouldn't count correctly, here is the script i was trying to use: If(OrderCounterSum >=40) beep show dialog("Error" etc) ElseIf goto…

    Ok guys and gals, this should be fun. I have File A which contains job records, one job per record. File B has late letters that I have sent for jobs that haven't been paid. I need a portal in File A that reminds me to send a second follow-up letter, after 30 days have elapsed and the silly people still haven't paid. I delete the letter from file B when they have paid so there aren't any letters there that don't need to be. I'll create a third file "C" for the second letter sent, but that's another story.   62. I am still working in version 6 of Filemaker. I have a layout where I am working with a limited amount of space so I need to display the same portal in 2 columns, 5 rows displayed in each. I need the second column to start displaying data at row 6 thru row 10 . I know that in version 7 this is an option but I am not ready to upgrade this application yet.     Hello, I'm new with FM. I must debug a web page. We had an application running on FM4 someone import pages in FM7. With FM7 we try the FM web server and I have a model (layout) who works correctly in FM7 but the problem is when I try this model in a web page, some icon not appear or not the good icon appear. I think it using 3 tables. The major table can have some "X" for some fields and when it have a "X" it must appear an icon from an other table. Example: When the field Glove have "X" the icon Glove must appear. Do you have an idea why some icon doesn't appear and sometimes it's not the good icon appear? Thanks for your help.

    I have a portal of 11 lines on my sales form tied to my invoice line item table. Great. I've set up a subtotal of all line items on the portal. The calculation for this subtotal field on my Sales form is: Sum(OrderLI::LineTotal). Great. Works fine for the first five line items then it craps out giving me a ? in the subtotal field.     hi, I have a problem with a portal showing unwanted records, basically a user can cancel an order, but when cancelled the portal row needs to omited somehow from the portal, basica structure of db, tbl_customers, tbl_orders and tbl_turkeys. the reason that i don't want them deleted is due to the business wanting to keep a record of all orders placed. Maybe an export to a file would work? dunno played around with it for ages and still no success. The user cancels the order by pressing a button, this is to stop uncancelling orders and for validation. any help would be great! MnR

    I have a portal which contains multiple related records that I want to merge to a letter. Example: Record 1 has three associated portal reocrds. The fields are MealType, Date, and Cost Estimate (i.e., lunch, 2/21/05, $8.75). I want to insert/merge all three related records into part of a letter.     Guess I posted to the wrong area...so here goes again. I have placed a portal on my sales layout from my products list. I can get it to select a record from a pop-up menu to display a record from products...great, however, on the next line when I choose another record the first line is replaced to match the second line. Plus the third row will not show the menu to select another Product ID?? Any ideas? Thanks.

I have a table which contains names and type of person, eg artist, producer etc, and from this through a third table have created a conditional value list which shows a list of only artists.     In FM6, I used to use the disappearing portal trick described on page 414 of "Special Edition: Using Filemaker Pro 5". Basically you use a portal to make buttons and fields diappear or reappear based on a relationship. I can't seem to make this same bahvior work on FM7. I'm trying to make a "show all contacts" button disappear when the user is viewing the complete set of records, but when the user is viewing a smaller found set, the "show all contacts" button would reappear. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? Or is there a change in behavior in FM7?

    Newbie here trying to set-up what I think should be a simple portal. I want a button that will allow me to add the current date in one field and then on the adjacent line it will allow me to enter as many lines of free text as I want. Each time I press the button the most recent date and note will be added to the top of the list. I can draw this out (see illustration below) but can't seem to define the fields, relationships and write the scripts to get it all to work. It seems to me I'm making it harder than it actually is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It is certainly a beginner problem (that's what I am): I need to extract the amount of different records(textpatterns) from a field and publish it as a chart (i bought a small programme therefore from http://www.briandunning.com/store/invoice.php) I tried several solutions from this site but so far successless; My own approach: case.... and thereafter sum(field) failed because of circular problems. If File one, Record number=::File two, record number for the portal and the Process field within the portal then this Process field returns all Process entries of File one for a particular Record number, regardless of category. What relationship(s) are needed to get the portal to only return only the Process entries of File one by only one particular category for a particular Record number without the category field being present on either the general layout or the portal of File two?

    Is there any way to turn off portal highlighting for specific portals? I have a few one to one relationships that use large sized (as in a 400x400 pixel rectangle containing 10 fields) portals to display information, if the user misses the intended field with a mouse click they are greeted with a large black rectangle. Not the end of the world, but it is ugly and I know it will cause confudion for some of my users.

    I'd like to create a splash screen to open my database. It would have two buttons to navigate to other files -- that's easy. I'd also like to have a portal displaying all records from one of those files. I seemingly need a relationship between the spash screen file and the target file but am not sure how to create one that will let me view all the records by a particular field since there is no inherent relationship and the spash screen will always be just one record. It must be easy but I am missing it in the moment.

    Ok, I'm stuck with a portal related problem. I have a portal thats displaying textual IDs from another table. There are up to ten related records being returned for each record in my database. I need to get all information out of each related record summed together into a single field in the database. For example, in a record in the database I have IDs from four related records in seperate portal rows 0027s1, 0027s2, 0027s3, and 0027s4. I would like this to become one single field that [0027s1 0027s2 0027s3 0027s4].     Hello all, The portals in my database to not scroll properly. The portal is only three rows tall. When a fourth or fifth item is listed in the portal and I try to use the scroll bar to view them, I only see garbled information for the rows that are scrolling into the portal. If I click on the scroll button some more, the entire portal fills with the same garbled data. Do any of you know how I might fix this? The attached image shows the forth item in the portal repeating after I clicked on the scroll bar again. Thank you! John

    In the OrderEntry table I have portals to two other tables. When I enter a product number it fills in the product information from these two tables. I would like to be able to "lock" the product number once I have clicked or tabbed out of the field so that the only way to change the entry is to delete the portal row (and thus the related records in a line items type table). This is due to using this field in a look-up in another table which, of course, won't change due to being looked up so I need it to be deleted if the product info changes.     Forgive me if this is too basic a question but this is my first multi-window multi-table-per-file FM7 DB and there's something I just can't seem to get to work (something that was an easy 1-step action in a one-table-per-file environment).     My portal has several fields on it. Several of these are filled in by choosing from a value list. The value list makes it own data from the field itself by way of allowing other as data is entered. The value lists come from fields in tables other than the one the portal is viewing. All of these work except one. As I use the value list, it will accept the data. But then when I try to add another item to the list, it wants to change the value that is already there. After a good deal of interface design sessions we settled on a primary layout whereby a portal on one side of the layout lists all of the projects and the remainder of the layout contains the detailed fields for the project selected from the list.     I don't know if this is possible - but how can I make it so that the contents of a portal are visible _all the time_, even when the user is moving the portal view by dragging the scrollbox in the scrollbar? The contents are visible when scrolling, but only if you use the up/down arrows in the portal's scrollbar. If you drag the box, the display locks until you stop moving. This makes finding items in a long list somewhat slow.

    I'm not sure exactly where this needs to get posted. I am trying to create an invoice that allows you to keep adding items to it. There will be a button taking you to a screen where you choose what is to be added to the next line of the invoice. The invoice will be automaticaly updated with the new item. This will be for creating printing invoices. Here is an example. I create a new invoice and select add quote. I am then taken to a screen where I enter 1000 prints on 80# cover stock etc....     According to FM, they fixed the issue with portals not refreshing data when pulling data from distant tables. My problem is it is still doing it, despite following all of FMs instructions with the 7.3 update. I have data that is dependent on a key that is set in one file (with the portal) and then pulls data from another. The cost displayed in the portal only refreses if I enter a quantity (thus forcing the calc) or if I go to define database and go back, then every cost is refreshsed. Is anyone else encountering this and any ideas for a fix? Thanks.

    I have a DB with a varying number of records per client. (I.e. client A have 5 records, client B have 1 record, client C have 12 records, client D have 0 records and client E have 3 record) One part of the DB shold in a portal reflect what clients (at that time) have records, and how many. Something like this: Portal ------- A 5 B 1 C 12 E 3 ------- This portal will serve as an index, for a CD backup of client material. Is this possible?
