I'm VERY new to FM. I would like to know how to make an "invoice layout" that I would be using the "standard layout" fields at the top (columns?) of the invoice. For example, we have a subcontractors to work for us, they get a certain rate & the company charges a certain rate. My fields are Date, Ticket #, Truck Co., Truck No., Weight in tons, Price per ton, Total Bill to Sub, Total Amount. This would then be sorted by Truck Co. with a subtotal, and a Grand Total for all Truck Cos. All of my records would be included on each invoice. Please HELP!?! Jody

I am using a portal in my layout and have checked the box to include a vertical scroll bar. I have successfully used this in other layouts, but in this database, none of my portals show the scroll bar. 1. Any ideas why? 2. Does anyone know how to keyboard navigate between rows/records within a portal? Any help would be greatly appreciated~ dales

I'm still working in Filemaker 6.0. I would like a pop-up list to activate a script after the entry has been made. I have created a script that will activate the pop-up list. However, the script doesn't wait for the entry before finishing. I hope there is an easy answer. I can't seem to find it by searching the forum. A pop-up menu will not work in this situation. I'm running Windows XP. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I would like to specify the maximum field size. (NOT number of characters) I have created a label generator for spines of folders. Obviously it is a fixed size. At the moment, as you type text, the field will stretch to accommodate extra content and then on exit display only that content which fits the field. I cannot specify the number of characters as the user may increase/decrease the font size which obviously alters the number of characters. I just want to set the ability for the field to stretch to OFF or some such thing so you simply can't type anything further in past the size as set on screen. Cheers

I made a database and a layout that lists the field labels and the values. For example Plan Number: 1 Plan Number: 2 Plan Number: 3 Company Name: ABC Inc. Company Name: KMG corp Company Name: KCG inc Life Insurance: $20000 Life InsuranceL $45000 Life Insurance: $30000 The above is exactly how it appears in my layout and preview. Hello, I have a report, which I can only display in preview mode. to allow my user to print, i am looking into using a 'palette' style layout on the left, which has some buttons - for printing. I also would like to page down, page up and go to end and go home. I know how to do this with the Scroll Window sript - in browse mode this works great. But in Preview mode, it just goes down to the page. Is there anyway to do this in preview mode? thanks for your help in advance, sincerly, J__

I am trying to set up a Custom Paper Size layout in Page Setup but after specifiying a height of 5.5 inches I note that it is being ignored in the layout on the screen (it is set to 6in and I am not able to drag and drop it to another size). Does anyone have any idea why it would be doing this? Could it be my printer? My printer accepts custom paper sizes. thanks for your help! Stephanie

I want to be able to perform a find and then assign a name to that find in a portal so that I can research for that name again later and get those same records - in other words, I need a script to Set the portal Field row for all of the records in the found set - Then this exact field text is stored in each of those records and I can then search by that text again later to pull up the same records. I have a table for my Contacts - in this table, there is a portal which shows Communication History - with two fields: COmmunication and Date. THe relationship I have created between the tables is Contact Name. I have many other portals throughout my database that work, yet for some reason, the same communication line is showing up in ALL records - so I see the same text in each portal! Hey all - I was wondering if it's possible to compile multiple layouts into a single one so that, when printed, the pages will be sequentially ordered. For example, can you write a script that takes Layouts A, B and C and "staples" them together, then prints, so that Pages 1 and 2 come from Layout A, Pages 3-whatever come from Layout B, and the remaining pages are from Layout C? (Or something to that effect?) Thanks!

When I printed my report in fileMaker 7, it just came out half page, rest of them got cut off. I checked margin in the layout mode, all the content was within the page margin. When I printed a report on a different user computer, the report got cut off again. Any idea? thank you. Jackson

I'm new to FM and am having some real difficult getting it to do what I want it to. I'm used to using MS Access. Anyway, I have a form with company details (name, address, etc) and one of the fields is 'Primary Contact', which indicates the name of the main person in the company and links to a 'Contacts' table. I want users to be able to open a popup window to add a new contact for the company. I know that I can use scripts to open a new window containing the current layout, but how do I get it to open a small window with the 'Contacts' layout in it? Thanks.

Hi, Suppose you have a list of tasks and you some workers who do those tasks. Each time a task is entered into the Tasks table, a worker is picked to do the work. I have a table of workers and a table of Tasks. I have created a mailing label layout using avery 5164 - This is a template with 6 medium size labels to a page. For some reason, in Preview Mode - information only comes up in the first top right hand corner label. Again, I AM IN PREVIEW MODE - not browse. The label has a text typed directly onto it in the layout with the company's logo / return address - this DOES show up in the labels. I have other smaller labels (regular letter labels) that work fine - any ideas? Thanks! Sarah

Yes me newbie alright! Ill do my best to describe the issue I am attempting to resolve. I have two tables, conferences and invites. I have related the field conferences.confID to invites.confID (one to many). I would like to create a layout that would display invitations per conference. i am having trouble getting my head wrapped around this issue. This is what I am trying to do: I have a user table, a project table, a tasks table, a activity table and a log table. Users have a set of projects they are assigned to (i am using a linking table to assign users and projects). Each project has a set of tasks (another linking table). I want in my activity table to select the user, the date and then in a portal allow them to keep a log where they pick one of their assigned projects and then one of that projects assigned tasks, then enter time and comments. Is it possible to sort a dynamic value list (from a relationship) on a field that doesn't appear in the pop-up? I know that you can place a 2nd field in the vl and sort on that, but I don't like to have a number showing in the pop-up that is totally irrelevant and confusing to the user. Even more challanging: I want to place a separation bar into a dynamic vl. The bar is easy to get by inserting a simple "-" into the depending field, but they always ends up in the top of the pop-up. Does anyone have any ideas about this, or is it just impossible? Greatful for all answeres!

Hi, I have a list view for my solution. I have attached a button to a job number so when clicked it will go to a related record. My problem is that my users would like to be able to do a find on that layout for that field, but when they go into find mode and click on that field, it runs the script. Can you set a button to only trigger in browse mode or can I script it with an "if in find mode" function? Thanks for any help you can give

I have a portal set up called "Activity History." I have set up a script that allows the current Activity to be transfered into the History portal each time there is a new "Activity" (Status, Location, etc, etc..) - Is there anyway to set up my portal so that the most recent activity is in the first portal row? i.e., each time you add a new portal row, each row moves down one to accommodate the new line. I even tried sorting it by date - but for some reason it still doesn't sort - any ideas? Thanks in advance - Sarah

I have a database with some tables for families. One table is for children, one is for parents, and a third, "map": fields: internalkey child.key parent.key family.id I'd like to have a layout that would list parents and children and allow the user to select/highlight each and click an "associate" button. Hello. I am a relative newbie "STILL". I am creating a database from the ground up. I have many tables already defined. I have one main table from whence all my data comes from. I have broken down into different sections smaller tables relating to the main one. All of this is linked (or trying to link) by ID #(serial #). I chose to import the main data and each smaller sections data from excel (seperately) (easier to break down that way, I thought). How can I use the get the ID#'s to coincide. I'm doing a small mailer for a project in a Datbase Publishing Applications Course. One of the programs being taught among PSM, RagTime, and Plugins for InDesign, is FileMaker Pro. I've created 3 tables. One that is a database of customers. The other is a database of wines. How does one display selected (more than one) values from a value list with more than two values in the list. I have a school PTA database (one table) with all student names and their parents. To join the PTA, I created a value list listing - student ; parent1; parent2 with check boxes next to each. Sometimes all 3 joined; sometimes 2 or just one. In trying to display actual names from the choices I created a field for each to display each selection which works fine except when 2 check boxes appear in the record and nothing is displayed Case(PTSA_Membership="Student1";Student) I realise Case only outputs one result. Hi there I am trying to find a way to output continuation pages where necessary from my database, where I am importing into a text field and I'm am very stuck! My layout contains just a text field. But the amount of text in this field changes depending on how much text I may choose to include. How do I make a page layout that will resize to fit the number of pages and hence the line breaks required depending on the length of text on the page? I may not be using Checkboxes and Radio Buttons correctly. I have what amounts to two fields, say Type & SubType, in a single table. The table is then equijoined to another table with lots of data. I have a layout from the two-field table and a portal to the records from the other table. I've set Type up as a Radio Button set and SubType up as a Checkbox set. That is, the user can select a single Type and one or more SubTypes within that Type. When I go to Browse mode and hit Cntl-N to make record in the two-field table, I can then click on a Type and then click on one or more SubTypes - and I immediately see good hits in the portal. Now for custom sized envelopes...I have gone into Page Setup and set the Customized size but for some reason the height of 5.25 inches that I selected is being ignored. The width is fine. Hi, I am a bit new, but I have been so frustrated with this problem. I want to be able to Make a Calculation Field that would result in combining the rows in a portal (in a related table). Here is what I mean. Lets say Table one has Contacts... Table two has their phone #s. I have created a database for church to track songs sung by the congregation each week. I create the worship service order in this database. The songs sung each week are entered into a "lineitem" table. I want to view in a portal and a report, songs sung grouped by the least, frequent and the most sung. Please note that there is no fixed number of how many times a song sung equals the least, frequent or the most, since the songs will accumulate over the years. I am using Filemaker 7. The idea is simple. I just don't know how to make it work. The database has 3 main fields: ID Number, First Name, Last Name It is for inputing a name to get the related ID Number. It is for children to use so I want it to operate as simply as possible. The first page I have them Type their First Name. It does a simple find. I am trying to create beginning balance records in one file from another file to show on a report, but I don't want the data to show in the body. I don't mind if it looks like a blank line but I don't want my users to get confused so I'd like it to be invisible. I have a very Simple Portal -- The Portal shows "Amount Due" & "Date Due" I came up with a calc field on the page where the portal sits.. Very simple: When "Date_Due" is < 30 days show a "1"... Now this field is a calc field... so when I go to make a portal on another page that shows all of the "1" nothing happens... How do I get a portal to index off of a calc field that cannot be indexed? Trying to make tickets for an event at school. The tickets would have a graphic in the background and a sequential ordering of numbers as the ticket number. That's it. This question was probably asked before, tried to search for it, but couldn't find. We are using Filemaker 6. There is a portal that filters data according to a "Status" field. It shows all records in status "Working". The problem is that if one of the users opens a layout with a portal, and another user moves record into "Working" status, the record doesn't appear on the first user's portal. Hovewer when record's status is changed from "Working" to anything else, it does reflect on the portal of the first user. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you

I am a beginner at learning how do this. What I need to do is create something that calculates, counts, summarizes (what ever you want to call it) the number of stores that each of our managers is in charge of. I need to be able to do a FIND by store STATUS (Active, Open, Hold) together with the PHASE (Pre-production, production, permit, construction). I have a pop up list of contact names whose values come from a field in a related file. I want the names to appear in the list as first name last name and be sorted by last name. Instead they are automatically sorted by first name. Any suggestions as to how I can get the list to be sorted by last name? I really don't want them displayed as last name, first name.

Hi, Can anyone tell me how you create a portal containing only unique items from a table. I used the FM Help as a start - I now have a table occurence with a field correctly displaying either "Unique" or "Duplicate", but cannot make the jump to isolate those records with "Unique" in the field. I'm trying to display the unique records in a portal, and created a self-join with a text field containing the value "Unique", but can't get the portal to work. Any ideas ? Thanks, Roger.

I've created a new layout. I copied and pasted some items from a provided template. If I close the database and reopen it, I get this error: "This action cannot be performed because the required table is missing" Everything seems to work fine - inserting records, serching, printing... It's like it is trying to run a script when it opens. Is there any way to "show all scripts used"? Or something like that? Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this error? : / Thanks in advance

I have a few tables (please see attached PDF for my relationships graph) that are related that I want to reference in a portal. I want to associate Items to an Auction. The auctions table is related to an AuctionItems table. Items are related via the AuctionItems table. I have a 'quotation' layout with repeating fields (10 repetitions) with fairly large depths for the field so that if each field was completed in full it would span two pages. Problem 1: I can get the repeating fields to slide and the calculated field beneath them slides up too. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get the field title to slide (indeed in print preview I can't even see it although I have checked that the checkbox not to print is empty) I also wanted to print something underneath the calculated field but I seem to have the same problem. Hi ! First of all im not so sure if Im doing it the correct way but I need some help if possible. I have 3 Tables, Contacts, Projects & Packages Now, Ive created my custom contact database , projects and packages, In each contact form , at the bottom i want a list of packages ive sent to them. I've attached a file I'm wanting to have the name field copy itself to a ShedNameFile field at top of layout, and that works like I want it to,but my problem is I also want it to go to Rent Due field to the value list.. all by clicking the Name field. I have a report on which I want all fields to have the same font characteristics (especially size.) However, some of the data fields are using a different (larger) font so that the report (actually labels) does not print correctly. When I look at the individual fields they do seem to be correct yet when I preview the data the larger fonts are still there on individual records. How can I fix this?

I have a few radio buttons where the choices are "yes or no" and those are in as number fields but display yes/no. How can I add a summary to total up the number of "yes" fields that I have for a particular person. I can total up fields with numbers fine, but I can't figure out how to total up the # of fields with the word "yes" in them. Thanks!

I've read a number of posts, articles and examples on how to create a portal filter to reduce the records displayed in a portal, based on creating a global field and an extra table occurrence. Do you think I can work out how to apply this to my solution . . . I've attached my file, where I want to filter the portal (on the project window) to allow users to filter the results to just show the tasks for the current project, not all the tasks for the related contact. Hey everybody, I have two questions for the masters of filemaker... 1) Is there a way to insert a jpg, gif, etc. into a layout so that the picture itself shows instead of an icon that would open the picture in another file? 2) Right now i have a lot of powerpoint presentations stored in container fields throughout my db, which is making it grow a bit too large (up to 169 megs and going skyward). I have always wondered if this is a possibility in FileMaker, and as I have started to develop DB's for people other than myself it is becoming an issue that I must know the answer to, and if there is not an answer what some people use as work around solutions. After I develop an Invoice or PO type Form there are many instances when a user will need to use more "lines" than are available on one printable page of a layout. I have always had to create a second record and then continue on. Two of the two obvious downsides is you would not get a grand total on the second page and sequential numbering would be off because I really want the second page to have the …

Hi, I am a n00b to filemaker. I need a portal to show all the records in a related file(5 records total). Instead of showing all records as a list, it only shows one record, and the other records show up in other records of the layout. Basically for each record of the layout there is one record in the portal and I want all records one the portal in one layout. Please help if you can.

I have the following layout which I want to print: SUBHEADING (from repeating field line 1) COMMENT FIELD 1 SUBHEADING (from repeating field line 2) COMMENT FIELD 2 SUBHEADING (from repeating field line 3) COMMENT FIELD 3 Sometimes a subheading and its corresponding comment field is empty. Have I reached a limitation for using portals in preview mode ? The issue seems to be that, when using a portal, the depth of the portal area can not be reduced in preview mode based on the sliding/printing options. I have presented the same data in two layouts, as 'main - portal' layout and 'items - list' In the 'main - portal' screen, the depth of the text seems to be consistant, and set to the maximum depth of the text for 'ItemDescrition' and is not reduced in preview mode In the 'items - list' screen, the depth of the text can be any depth (currently max 4 lines), and is reduced when there are less lines of text in the 'ItemDescrition' in preview…

I've got a question similar to the portal filter post already underway. I too would like to filter my portal results using a global and a second TO. The problem is, I want the filter to be a calculation. Specifics: I have a scholarships database. In one layout I would like two portals - the first shows all the scholarship information for each student, that's easy. The second will have the same information BUT will only show the scholarships for the current school year (Fall 2005 - summer 2006). OK, here is a question, about page numbering. I have a layout for printing customer bills. I have three files - Supplier, Parts and Machine Details. I created a relationship between Parts and Machine Details with a machine ID. The problem is that I have a portal in Machine Details showing parts used on a machine. The suppliers name appears in some records but not others. Please can anyone suggest why this happens.I have checked the size of the fields so that there is enough space for the name to appear but this doesn't help. Many thanks in advance. Lesley

Greetings, oh wise ones! I have searched and searched, but have yet to find much information on whether it is possible to hide an empty field on a layout, but show the rest of the record. Specifically, I have a layout for required tools and supplies. Its table contains fields for item name, whether or not the item requires an MSDS sheet (Yes/No) and a container field which will hold the link to the MSDS PDF file (if one is required). Is it possible to hide the link field if it is empty, but show it (with border) if non-empty? Thanks in advance, Jeff

all, we recently upgraded to 7 and ran into a strange problem and I hoping the group could help. We have an Invoice file that has two sets of repeating fields. One for Labor Codes and one for equipment. The user enters the first field in the labor line and a pop up of the code # and Description field show up. When one is selected the labor code gets put into field A, the description goes in field B, and the unit cost goes into Field C. This works for the 1st row of the repeating field but not the remainder. When you enter the second or subsiquent rows you see the Code # and Description. Is there any creative way to have FM pull up a particular value list (i.e., "Type List For Class ______") based on the value of another field (i.e., "Class")? I don't want to involve button-driven-scripts or to require users to manually change layouts. I recently switched from Filemaker 4.0 to 7.0 Developer and from OS 9.2 to 10.3.9. I converted several data bases. I have a three page spread sheet layout in landscape in my Accounting file. Previously I used a Image Writer which doesn't have drivers in 10.3.9. I have a HP 4000TN Laser Jet on the Ethernet Lan and a Epson C86 Ink Jet at my desk on USB. Hi, I suspect I should know this but I've gone brain dead! Attached is the relationships for my layout which is based on Employee. The Portal is based on time entry line items. The job title automatically entered from the job bag. What I want to do is ensure that users cannot overwrite the Job Title when they are adding entries from here.
