I've just installed FM Server 5.5 on W2K Pro. It's pretty much up-and-running, but I'm puzzled to work out where the list of databases the Server has opened is found! Thanks.

I am using OS X and Filemaker 5.5 server. Today I noticed that the server was not sorting properly. By the time I noticed this my database was corrupted. I then recovered it. After restarting machine and restarting Server it wouldnt open database. It acted like it did. Then It corrupted it again. I did this 3 times with same results everytime. Anyone else having this problem? I am using OS X 10.1.2 Can file sharing be on the same machine? I know its not recomended on older OS 9 but with multi-threaded OS X I figured it would be ok. I used it on OS 9 and never noticed a slow down and I used it for 2 years. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong.

Hi there, We have filemaker server running on mac osX 10.1.1. For some reason, our mac's that use macOS9 cannot connect to the server. Any ideas why this is not working? We can run the server on a Mac OS 9.0 and connect a Mac OS 9 client to it, and similarly a MacOSX client can connect to a MacOSX based server. Is there an OS compatibility problem or is there something else? Any tips? Thanxs Steve

Problem - slow indexing on FMP 5 (when indexing millions of rows). Question - Would FMPro Server 5.5 or anything else help? I have a PowerMac G4/733 with 1.5 gigs of RAM, and I have allocated 500 megs of RAM to FileMaker Pro 5. I have a new database where I imported 5.5 million rows. The import only took about an hour and a half. But I then had to create indexes on three columns (fields) out of 30 columns. And, by looking at how slow the index build is taking, it will take ~81 hours to complete. Since I will be updating (and possibly re-creating) this database weekly, I need a faster way to build these indexes. What do I need to do in order to speed up index-bui…

I'm moving our databases from FMPro 5.5 to Server 5.5 on the same machine -- but I want to get rid of the Pro 5.5 that's on there so I can use that license for another work station. (We're adding new staff.) Should I install server, then delete the Pro applications files? Delete first (leaving on the databases on the machine) and then install Server? How do I begin using Server (The box hasn't come yet...) Do I just open the files I want to host, as is, or do I need to import the records into a new "Server" document? How much different is using a file on Server than on Pro - other than additional features? In other words, can you tell me the answers to the questions I …

Sorry if this question should not be brought up over here. I downloaded the trial version of Filemaker Server 5, and had it installed on Redhat Linux. But once I run it, it says "This version has expired. Please use a current version." The thing is I just downloaded it several minutes ago before the installation. I noticed there is one step in the documents which asks for registration before really run it, but this is a trial version. Does anybody have the similar experience? What is the problem? I really want to try it out first before telling the boss to buy it. Thanks a lot. Kuang Cao

Hi all! Some days ago I've installed FM Server 5.5 onto my MacOS 9.2.1 G4 and it worked (and it's working) fine.. A couple o f day ago I would like to test the FMS X version, so I rebooted my G4 from the X partition (a HFS Extended...) I've installed FMS acting like "root" and Administrator but when I've lauched FMS and started the server, FMS stops services and I found this error in the event.log: "TCP/IP network initialization failed; the TCP/IP address is already in use or an addressed could not be obtained." (Exactly as documented in the help!) Infact the FMS Networking Tab shows an empty/dimmed <Preferred IP Address> pop-menu. I tried to forc…

I looked the error up in the FM knowledge base and it mentions remnents of FM Server 3.0 as a possible problem. My question is: Is there any way to run Server 3.0 and 5.0 on the same machine?

I'm setting up FMS on a Citrix server. I have things going along pretty well, excpet for this. One of the databases uses scripted buttons with sorts to display only the relelvant records to a user. On stand-alone, it works fine, but as a hosted file I get the following error: "The previous script step, "Sort", could not be completed becuase it restores an invalid request. Do you wish to continue with this script" I press continue and it seems to work fine. What gives? Any help is appreciated. Chris

I've got a db that is saved on a file server. It's rather large - at least *I* would say it is. (You may think otherwise.) Today it has started to tell me that it is opening the file as Read Only. When I drag a copy to my desktop I can open that copy. When I try to replace the server version it tells me that it's in use. It sounds to me as though the server THINKS it's in use and it really isn't. Any ideas on how I can correct it?

We would like to consolidate this on to one server if possible, and well the question is..Is it possible. Can we install multiple licences of Server 5.5. on one server enabling different work groups to have there own Server software? Or is it 1 license per Machine?

Here's the short version of what we're doing here. We are setting up FM Server 5.5 on a dedicated server. The plan is to have a new blank database reside in a seperate folder on our network for each project we start. Each project database will then be filled in gradually with all the project data. It is likely that one or more people will want to open and work in the same database at the same time. Here's the questions: 1. Is there some way to avoid the whole "administrator" & "guest" thing that happens when two people try to open the same database file? I was under the impression that Server would 2. Hi, Am working on a solution with FileMaker Server 5.5 on OS X 10.1 where we need to protect our databases so that they can not be copied and used. Since there is no plugin which works on the FileMaker Server, we wrote a C application that checks the ethernet ID on startup of the FMServer deamon and decrypts the files. Conversely, it's also supposed to encrypt the files when FMServer quits. Problem is, the shutdown access works VERY erratically. Sometimes its fine, and sometimes it doesn't encrypt the files on shutting down. Does anyone know how we can a) Execute script POST the FM Server shut down : Is there a signal to terminate FMServer immideately c) Can we e…

OK, let's start at the beginning. 1. Turn file sharing OFF. It will cause you untold problems. 2. Drop the memory back to about 32 MB. All FM Server can use is 40 MB to begin with. 3. Turn OFF Virtual Memory if you have it on. 4. Recover all your files, then export all the data in them. Import that data into clean clones of your files. 5. Go to the FMI Web Site and download the FM Server BEst Practices White Paper. HTH Old Advance Man

I'm running FM Server 5.5 for 30+ databases on a Win2000 Server. I use Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 to do nightly backups. Since moving from WINNT to Win2K, the backup software reports that the databases are corrupt (which they are not of course). One solution (from Veritas) would be to have FM Server stop serving the databases during the time backups are going on. Since none of the dbs are 24/7 critical, how could I have FM Server stop serving the dbs for an hour while the files are being backed up? Any suggestions? Thanks!

For the ones that are using Filemaker Server 5.5 on MacOS X. I have tried the evaluation version of Fm Server, but I do not see how to get FM Server to host without someone log into the machine first and then it will auto launch. I have seen other databases on MacOS X startup and host files without a person logging into the machine. Does anyone know how to set this up. If FM Server has to ne logged in to host this can be a big security hazard for a machine that is always logged in to host databases over a network. Thanks

Help! We have customers who cannot afford to purchase FMP server PLUS all the FMP's for the users so they are using the runtime version of our software which we have created for this purpose. We have been running FileMaker Server 5.5 on a Mac OS 10.1 server for the past month. I ran into a problem with FileMaker Server Config file remembering its preferences, particularly after running a FileMaker 5.5 client locally on the server. FileMaker admitted this was a known problem which they are working on. In the mean time, we editted the preference file to hard code our preferences into the system. I now have another concern about the ability of FileMaker server to clear the cache before shutting down on Mac OS 10.1. I think, and would like to have someone confirm that there are issues. I have Server 5.5 installed on an OS X 10.0.4 box. Our database consists of 50 files. I have the databases in a folder called "Current Databases" at the root directory of the system, and aliases to these files in the FileMaker Server 5.5 folder. When FMS starts up, all the databases are opened except a file called Users. I can open the file manually (File/Open Database). If I change the file name to, say, "Users File", it works, but that would break a whole bunch of relationships. I've changed the name of the alias that points to the file, and it seems to work. Is the filename Users reserved or restricted in Server 5.5? This exact setup worked flawlessly in Server…

We host 60 databases on FM server. There are about 40 users in one location (in Ireland.) We are now setting up another plant in Livermore, CA. We want the users there to have the same Filemaker access to the same databases. The problem is that Internet access bandwidth is very limited in Livermore. 144k is the limit now. Over this connection, native filemaker reports are too slow. We could use HTML but it is limited to 3 step scripts. We use a lot of sophisticated scripts. We have the VPN, firewalls etc in place. If we could have a mirrored server at each plant with very frequent incremental synchronisation it seems that it might work well. Is FM Serve…

I have been operating for years under the assumption that FMP Server 3.0 can host FMP databases of version 3.0, 4.0 and 4.1 without any problems. My assumption has been that the scripts and calculations were performed on the client machine and that the server just held the files open. I have been asked to troubleshoot a database which I didn't develop. It was written in FMP 4.0. It is used for scheduling equipment check out in a library. The script which checks for conflicts for reservation date and time works under 4.0 and 4.1 - but fails to work when the databases are served by a FMP 3.0 server. Any ideas? Cheers, Marcia

I have a calculation that is date specific I need to take a field, multiply it by a number if applies to Nov 1 or later in a date field, and I need to take the same field and multiply it by a different number if another if the date is prior to Nov 1. What we are attempting is to alter a labour charge if it occurs after November. For example: Labour Cost = "total labour hours" * $50 if the "date created" is less than 11,01,01 or else the "total labour hours" * $55 Any help is definitely appreciated as I am obviously not a programmer.

Our network administrator recently dedicated a machine to be our server. He loaded on FileMaker Server and we now have 9 machines that can get to it. The only problem is that when I try to do any administrative actions (which I am responsible for), I cannot get to the files. When I double-click on the server from the Hosts window and the database windows appear, I select "OPEN FILE" and the Open Database window is empty, so therefore I cannot configure the access/permissions for a file. Not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but I don't really know if the solution requires scripts, relationships or what... I've got about 12 Databases, some are related, and some aren't. They're all served via Server 5.5. What do I need to do to set up a "Opener" database that when opened on a FMP 5 Client machine will launch all of the databases on that client? I noticed that if I open one of my related DB's it will open all others that it has relationships with, but it seemed somewhat excessive to build another DB with relationships to all of them, for the sole purpose of opening them. Anyone know of another/better way? Or is this an acceptable so…

I can use the tool to close files, but when I try to open them, I receive an error saying "error occurred, unable to open file". I can go to the server and open the files directly. Any ideas why it won't let me open them remotely?

Well, let's see. I will be developing a pretty straight forward application for my school district. We are talking very basic stuff. Will the version 3.0 be able to satisfy our needs? Where can I get a book on this version? Thanks, Evan P.

Well, here is the sad story. Some time ago my Predecessor(s) purchased two individual copies of FM Pro Server 3.0 for Windows NT. These cd's came in a bown shipping envelope containing a olny cd each. I assume that years ago there was documentation but it is lost now! Is there a way I could get the code associated with each so I could install it? I am willing to mail the cd's to the company for verification purposes. We lost several million dollars from our district budget and buying such software is just a dream. Please help. Evan Panagiotopoulos

Hi, Is it possible to run two filemaker server 5's on the same NT network without any conflicts. I need to have two servers containing the same databases (same database names) on each one. (Before you ask why?) I have two ordering systems, one in $NZ and the other in $OZ. Currently I am running server 3 for OZ and Server 5 for NZ and i want to upgrade server 3 to 5. =)

Version: FM 4.1v3 This has happened once before- and restarting the server solved the problem- What happened again is that all PC users would lose their connection to the database, and then were not able to see files listed under Hosts after restarting the PC. Brief description of setup: Main Site 1 is connected to remote Site 2 thru a T1 line.

Okay, first off -- for those of you looking for the fmserverd binary, it is here: FileMaker Server 5.5/FileMaker Server Config.app/Contents/Resources/fmserverd Now to my question -- I'm trying to set up FMP Server 5.5 to run as a non-admin user on Mac OS X 10.1. I can do so just fine from the command line while logged in as the non-admin user, but I need to create startup items in /System/Library/StartupItems and I'm having trouble executing the command I believe should look like this: sudo -u fmp /Applications/FileMaker Server 5.5/FileMaker Server Config.app/Contents/Resources/fmserverd -c fmserver.conf But when I run that, I get the error: Error opening log file: …

Hello people, I need a little help. Up to now, our small business have always used one database with FileMaker pro 5. Of course, some businesses grow, like ours, and now I have to make sure that all computers can access the database. I just want to know if the server version will let me share the same file simultaniously with all the other computers. If so, I presume that I will need filemaker pro 5 licenses on all the other nodes? Finally, can I have it (server) run on win98? Thanks for your time. ps. sorry for the obvious lack of grammar skills, I'm not english.

Not a question about Mac vs Windows, but instead which is the best Mac OS version to run FMP Server 5 from. I seem to remember someone recommending 8.6. Clients are running version 9.1 and 9.2. Also how far down does one strip the extensions. Do you disable even things like Qtime, etc. Would appreciate any comments and rational behind them. Thanks. gd

Hi, I need to run FMP client and server on the same computer - to host files using FM Server and access them using FM Client (this is for testing purposes, to test functionality before deploying everything on a LAN). The problem is that FM client doesn't see files hosted on FM Server. At all.. I tried Local host, and Specified host (was using 127.0.0.1). No success. Honestly, I'm a bit puzzled, because I never had such problems on LANs.. Any help or advices are greatly appreciated! I use FM Client and Server 5.5 for Mac OS X. I created a database that included both global text fields and regular text fields. I placed the database onto a FileMaker Server. As I enter data (records) into both of these fields everything appears to be entering properly. I then close the database. The next time I launch the database, from the server, the data from the global text fields has disappeared. The data in the regular text fields is still there. Any explanations?

Quick question. I am running a filemaker server which is remotely accessed by several other terminals. My question is, when a terminal access the server, is the application processed in the server first before being fed into the terminals or are the terminals the ones who process the data? The reason why I am asking this is because the terminal seems to be really slow in computing out the information. So I am trying to identify whether it's the server issue or just the terminal being slow? Thanks.

Ok, Everything works fine. On a single computer and in my little network Mac-PC. Then I install the dbase on a FM Server (Windows NT) and: - the first time the speed is great, I shut down the dbase - I open it again and now it's sooooo slow (and bound to stay that way) What's going wrong? Links are fine, everythings ok, please H E L P. Maybe it's me as it's the first time I installed a fmdbase on an FMServer. All the files are in my remote server window. And as long as the server isn't activated everything works fine. This makes me feel helpless, Mich

We're hosting some databases with FM Server and we just switched to 2000 from NT. Now I can't open the hosted databases on the machine that's hosting them, it' can't find it's own IP address. The other computers in the office (both Macs and PCs) access the files via the sever's IP address. FileMaker is set to use the TCP/IP connection, so it's not that. Any suggestions?

We have installed on a remote server (Windows Server 2000 NT)FileMaker Pro Server 5. We are 10 users each sharing a certain number of volume and each having its own private volume. We have never been able to share a database between all of us. We have about a dozen different database that are shared between some of us and some between all of us. Support from FileMaker is inexistant, they told us that they can't see what the problem is and just don't care. Does anybody out there have an idea of what the problem is and what to do about it. I can't imagine that FileMaker Pro is incompatible with Windows Server 2000 NT. If you want more information on the configuration of…

Here's a quick "Orientation" for FMP 5.5's Auto-Update feature. First, open the "AutoUpdateExample.fp5" database that comes with the 5.5 server install. Examine the fields and scripts in there. The example database is designed to check for and download the Server Administration plugin. You have to duplicate the functionality of all the fields and scripts in this example for any plugin downloading you want to do yourself. When you look at the scripts, it's not always real obvious that one external call - like External("FMA-Version", 0) - needs to replaced with the equivalent call for the plugin you want to work with. In the case of the Troi Dialog plugin, you would need …

Hello... Been using FM Server 5 (Mac) for about 6 months now. Have used the "scheduled backup" feature to back up to a removable disk, with no problems.... Now, I get a "error message" when I try to back up my files. It will back up all of them but one, which of course, is the main data file that holds most of the critical info. It will not back this up now. I open the server messages and all it says is something like..."can't write "main data" to disk... What gives? Worked like a charm and then all of a sudden...it doesn't. Do I have a bad file? Is there a fix to this problem? This particular file holds about 200,000 records....so it is a big file and importan…

All I did was restart the NT 4 box. FMS 5 simply won't start, either thru the services applet, or thru command line. I even uninstalled FMS, re-installed NT service pack 6, and re-installed FMS 5. I also changed file permissions on the complete drive, giving 'Everyone' full access. anyone have any ideas what things stop a FM server from starting up?

Hi there. Have just changed our FM server from Mac to Win2000. Read in teh documentation that by using fmsvplog.txt I should be able to view realtime performance, but can't find this file anywhere on the Hard Drive. Can anyone suggest what I need to do? I would like to see which Dbases are open, being used by whom and so on. Have I missed something? Cheers!

If I use FM Server 5 to host the databases, will that have any impact on the databases being hosted? I know that if you install FM 5.5 on a workstation and open an FM4 file it will convert it to FM5.5 and this is not backward compatible. which would mean that users will not be able to open the database without using FM5.5 Thanks in advance

I am hosting 2 different sets of databases with 2 separate Filemaker Server (Version 5.01) applications. From the Guest tab window, one of the applications only shows the Guest and the Protocol while the other application shows the Guest, Protocol, address, connection time and idle time. As far as I can see, they both have the same preference settings. How do I show the address, connection time and idle time? Is reinstalling the software the only way to fix this?

Any file name ending in "_" will not show in the Hosts file list ( the same as Shared(Hidden)), but will operate normally. They will show in the Hosts list when accessing them in Scriptmaker. This is a feature of FM Server. It's a throwback feature from FM3 server.

Would the speed of FileMaker Server 5.0 increase if we were to add 512 MB of memory to our dedicated G4 FileMaker Server? FileMaker Server 5.0 is the only program running and is the foreground application. We currently have 256 MB memory in our G4. Mac OS takes about 45 MB of memory to run and FileMaker Server 5.0 is using about 45 MB of memory. This G4 is dedicated to running only FileMaker Server 5.0.

We have server 3 running on an NT 4 server. It's hosting 20 files and about 25 users. Filemaker server3 crashes at least once a day. The event viewer shows the following error "The Filemaker Pro Server service terminated with the following error: All pipe instances are busy" The server3 is set to host 50 files and 50 users. Any ideas???

In one of my database files I have a script that imports data from several other files (I use the Import script step four or five times). Using regular FM Pro 5.0 on a network, the script takes a few seconds to run. Recently the database was moved to FM Server 5.0 -- and this script now takes several minutes to run, even with only one user. I don't know much about FM Server (and don't administer it), so this may be a stupid question, but: Is there some reason for this? Are imports always slow in the Server environment? Thanks for any advice anyone can provide.

Just converted 32 databases from v4 to v5 and am hosting them with v5 server. All are functioning fine except one. The problem db comes up asking for a password and if one is not provided you can't get in. The same db opened with Pro locally will let you in without a password. I will research password configurations in general, but hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Hey kids. We have FMServer 5.0 on a Windows NT machine, with eight users on Windows 98, and one user on an iMac with some sort of Mac OS (I hope my prejudices aren't showing). We have two databases (there are two companies in our office): One has 27 files; the other has 20. Let's talk about the one with 27 files. There is a FM file on everyone's desktop that has a startup script that opens the Main Menu file when it is opened. OK so far. The Main Menu file has a startup script that opens the 26 related files, using the Open script step 26 times - once for each related file. Each of these files has a startup script that sets Use System Formats on - that is the ONLY ste…
