Can somebody explain me how to use print setup to control page size and orientation.I have tryed to make script after print setup and print but fm always forgets orientation and page size.

I am having a problem importing my logo from Illustrator into my form letter. It prints terribly. How can I correct this? Is there a way to use word for form letters instead of Filemaker's, while still importing client's info as the address? Or, a reason why graphics import terribly. Most of my forms that I pulled over from V5 will not print unless I use a certain font (Arial). Which our company uses (Formatta). Is there a reason why it'll print one font and not the other?

Hello, I am having problems designing an invoice layout for a database. My client want the invoice items to be divided into 5 different departments on the invoice layout, so I set up 5 different relationships each tied to not just the job# field, but also a "department" field. So, on my invoice layout, I set up 5 different portals with each displaying 15 lines of each department's invoice items. The problem is, rarely, if ever, will all 15 lines be used for all the departments, but sometimes a single department will come close to using them all. I designed a layout that displays 15 photographs on the page when viewed in preview mode. The trouble is, when I attempt to print the page, only the photograph in the top left-hand corner of the page will print. Have I overlooked a setting that would print the other photos as well? Haven't used Filemaker since the late 80's, recently had a client ask if I could help them print labels in Filemaker. Sure, I said, I'm familar with it, how hard could it be to import a text file? Hah! They're using Filemaker pro 6 for OSX. What they want to do is print labels of their production line. I whipped up a Q&D (Quick&Dirty) FMP7 app to print out software reports for our corporate PC inventory. What we want is to print a report of software installed on each computer. I have an Excel file with the info that was exported from our inventory system. We want the report to have the computername & userid at the top of each page and the software records below. Each time the computername changes, it should start on a new page and restart the page numbering at 1. I have it all working except the page numbering. Hi. I am trying to get a layout to print correctly. It's a simple Colunm List with a header, body and then a grand summary. The body stretches in size and can be over multiple pages, with the grand summary being underneath. The trouble is that under part of the summary I wans another body of text that prints out onto the next page, I need to put a break onto into the trailing grand summary somehow as having a footer/title footer are not going to the job? upgraded from Filemaker 3. to Filemaker 7 and after considerable script changes all of the datebases work and interact as expected. The data bases are shared using Filemaker 7 server. The problem is that printing even simple lists results in out of memory error when printing more than half a page. I have this problem on G3,G4 &G5 machines and with HP LJ 2100, 4000 & 5m printers. Sorry for the cross-post but I just noticed that sliding issues are discussed in this forum rather than in Layouts. There is something real basic I'm not getting about sliding. In this case I want to produce a name and address list. One row per person, and three columns: the first for the person's name, the second for his address, and the third for his various telephone numbers and email. When there is not an "Address Line 2", or a Mobile Phone number, or a Work Phone number, etc., I want that space to be eliminated. Furthermore, I want each row to shrink vertically to consume any space left by the upward sliding of address or phone number fields. My layo…

When I print labels (2 rows of 7 = 14 labels in total per sheet), the name and address that comes after the name and address at the bottom of the first column drops off, and the name and address that comes after the name and address at the bottom of the second column drops off. I'm pretty disapointed with the printing capabilities of FM, at first I was very confused about the sliding rules, (they're still a bit fuzzy) I was spoiled using cangrow and canshrink in MS access that does the dirty work for you. If I have a field using a value list formatted as checkboxes it's extremely annoying to see that field split over the bottom/top of consecutive pages. I created a simple database and one of the layouts refuses to print. This layout does have a summary field part in it if that matters. Anyway, when I use file>print or run a print script, I get the print dialog box in which I click [Print], then the printer's LCD screen changes from Ready to Processing, and in a few seconds the printer says Ready again and nothing happens. The printer is an HP 4050N. All other fields print just fine from the same file. The file was created using FileMaker Pro V6.0 on OS X 10.3.4 Panther. I have a file with 3 tables: Service_Call, Expense, & Inventory. Both the Expense and Inventory tables are related to the Service_Call table via the Call_ID field. I want to create a report that shows all of the expenses and inventory related to given service call. If I only wanted to show expenses I would normally report the data from the Expense table and show Service_Call data in the header and footer sections. With two detail sections (Expense & Inventory) how would I put a report together to have all of the data on one single page?

I have inherited a FileMaker app that was created in version 5.x. I converted it to 7.0 in the Developer program. Everything looks great on my development and test computers/printer but when I distributed that app (including all the necessary TrueType fonts) I'm getting reports from my users that the printed output looks nothing like the version on screen. I've had them fax me a sample and it looks like the printer is not using the correct font. I'm in a school district and we have various printers out in the schools. Any thoughts?

I have this very annoying problem that pops up periodically, and inconsistently, so I've had a really tough time with it. Usually, I am able to "fix" it by making some adjustments to field size or portal size. The biggest problem is that it doesn't always happen to me in test, but one of my customers will report it. I can't describe the problem, so I am sending this pdf file that shows the problem. This seems to happen most in portals, but I've also had it happen in straight "row" printing. I have a large sales lead database and recently setup a template to print on pre-printed card stock that has 8 cards per page and is a standared 81/2 by 11 page but can only seem to get it to print 6 of the 8 cards properly I have tried ajusting the margins ajusting the spaceing in layout mode etc.. and nothing seems to work either the spaceing gets messed up or things just slide up the page and looks really bad.. Any ideas on how to fix this ever troubleing problem would be greatly helpful..! Rob

Not a pressing problem, but a curiosity: when I print in FM7, the job sometimes shows up in OS X's print queues under a name that's neither the file name nor the table name. Somehow it reverts to the name of the FM6 flat file that was converted and renamed months ago. FM7 doesn't *appear* to store this name explicitly, yet somehow it's sending it to the OS. So, if that name is now meaningless or misleading, is there any way to go in there and fix it? (It would be great if it could send the layout's table name, not just the file name; otherwise FM7 jobs are harder to sift through in the print queue than FM6 jobs were.)

I am having problems printing records using Instant Web Publishing from Safari. The printout doesn't include all the data from the record and, unlike a traditional web page print, shows only what is on the screen including the slider bars on the right and bottom. Hello. I am looking for some advise with sliding feature. Here is my case. I am utilizing sliding feature of FileMaker to print signature right under the text of letter. On the layout I have 3 fields: 1. Body (text) 2. Signature (container) 3. Sub Signature (text) Printing layout is 3 pages, so Body field is spanned over 3 pages, and the other 2 are just below it at the very bottom of page 3. I have the following Mac/Windows issue: When I write a letter in a textfield and use the tab character (Option-Tab for Mac and CNTRL-Tab for Win), the tab positions are a mess on the print out from the Windows XP machine. Printing it by a Mac doesn't give any problems. As a test, I copied the written text (including some tabs) from Filemaker Pro 6 to Word 2003 on a Win XP machine. Then I selected the option 'show hidden characters', I noticed that some tab characters weren't there at all! Does anybody experienced this same problem? Or is there something I can do to be able to have a proper printout with a Windows computer?

I have a label printer, and a normal printer. I have scripting that takes care of most things, but can not get the print setup working.. I am having problems printing a select set of records that are selected via a script. I can print a record or group of records from the database without incident. After the script runs, the "preview" of the number of pages shows "?" pages (instead of a number). When I try to Print directly, it cycles through the number of records (Printing Page 1...Page 2...etc), but when it gets to the end, it doesn't do anything! This is weird. There are a few files that will crash upon my sending them to my Brother HL-1440 or even clicking the "Save as PDF" button with that printer selected. The files that I've discovered do this are FileMaker Pro 5.5, (iTunes had the same problem until a tech support guy had me toss out the pref file -- I tried that with FileMaker, too, but that has not solved the problem). When creating a new layout to be able to print labels (from a dymo 330T), I can't figure out how to get it to print two labels at a time(using the adress 2-up 30253 labels). I have the same problem Vandy had back in June 04. I have a layout where one of the fields is a comment. The comment can be one word to 1000 words long. I have placed it on a layout, highlighted it in layout mode, clicked Format, Sliding Print and checked Sliding Up Based On All Above and also clicked on Also reduce. I work for an entertainment company and we pound out labels on a regular basis. We recently purchased a pair of Labelwriter 330's to replace an antiquated one we were using, and I installed them on both a Mac OS 10.2.8 machine and a 9.0.2 machine. I have the most up-to-date version of the drivers available installed on each and on each I am able to print only from the Dymo software. I have a problem I can't resolve. We just installed our new database for POS in our retail store. it basically allows us to look up prices and generate an invoice. The system runs on two computers. One, an iMac G4 800 (OS X Panther 10.3.5) serves the database and a second 9500 (OS 9.1) with G3 upgrade accesses the database by using "open Remote." The problem: when I generate and print an invoice on the 9500 it prints to a Apple Laserwriter 16/600 PS (over an ethernet connection), almost instantly. Got a long (up to 5 pages) layout consisting of multiple sliding text fields, between which are container fields designed to space the text fields properly. Scripts and another database "spacers" give user control to spacing between text fields using jpgs varying in size from 6 to 16 pts, inserted with the scripts into specific spacing fields. This way the text fields dont end up cut in half (or 5/8, etc) across page breaks. This was already a pretty major work-around for FMP inability to properly break lines of text. Works perfectly in preview mode, but problem is preview doesnt match printed version. Obviously this ruins the fluidiity of the spacers solution, which…

I have a Work Order table that includes an operator field and I have a Work Order Items table that details work performed in a number of different areas (ie: prep, assembly, finishing, etc) I'd like to have a report that lists the operators and all their work orders that is sorted by the total hours performed by each operator with the operator with the most hours being first in the report then the one with the second-most, etc. basic Top N reporting that a program like Crystal reports can do no sweat. This is a user message from a served program. "The 'printing error -47' is still occurring. More than a third of the time, it takes two or three attempts to print on a network. Works perfectly if printing to a direct connect printer." The problem is occurring on multiple laptop Macs. Maybe somebody that checks this forum out can give me a little help ... or confirmt that the problem still exists. ----- I've been printing from Classic due to the EPS/PDF low-res (bitmapped) printing problem in FMP 5.5 and 6 on OS X. Is it possible to tell FM to print x amount of copies based on a particular field? here's the issue, maybe there's another way to it. I created a packing slip / shipping label program that we have printing to a Zebra. The user puts in the total qnty and the qnty per box. From there i need it to print however many labels of the same label needed... (i.e. - 100 total pieces, 10 / box, i'd need 10 labels)... is there an automated way to do this? TIA

We have a cursed iMac here at work which continuously has problems (user error: replace user and continue). This time it has me stumped. Only in FileMaker (at first 6 Unlimited under OS 9.1) it would not print, giving those two error codes. I replaced the OS (to OS 9.2.2) and FileMaker (to Developer 6). It still gives the errors when printing. Other applications print fine. Any ideas?

I am using FM Pro6 v1.0 on Win98SE. I have two printers connected to my computer, HP deskjet 3650 and Panasonic KX -P1150 (dot printer). When I print through HP things printed out as they appear on the preview mode. But when I do print through Panasonic, the fonts are printed much larger than they appear on preview. I have a client with the following: FMPS 5.5 FMP 6.0v4 OSX (Panther) 23 users This is very strange. All reports in the system print perfectly for all users except for one person. She can print from all apps and even other FMP files (files not part of the above system) but not reports within the system. I've reinstalled FMP, tried other printers, downloaded latest os patches and am now out of ideas. I have also found that if she selects "Preview" from the print dialog box and then selects print from Preview it prints fine. I'm assuming this works since FMP lets go and Preview takes over. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I have a report where you use the Find to choose the date and it should print out all records corresponding with that date. It will only print the first record though... even though in list view it shows all records. Any ideas?

OK this is something I've never been too clear on. Printing from FileMaker. On our network everyone is in different rooms and have different printers. Now I know that you can set a printer setup by setting it up yourself, then replacing the information stored in the script. That's not a problem. My question is how that relates to other peoples printers. I set it up on mine, but does that mean it just uses whatever the default settings are for that users printer when they come to use it? Anyone have any advice when it comes to starting to print from filemaker? Thanks

I have a layout with several fields of various kinds: date, timestamp, container, text, etc. When I go into preview mode everything looks fine except that there is no text in the text fields. The fields show up, but they look as though they have nothing in them. They print fine however. Is this a know bug, or is there something I can do to fix this? Thanks, Dan

I have been using an old (DOS) modified FileMaker program that lets me print records in the format of the layout screen. This output creates a text file with all of the formatting of the layout and is convenient for importing into other programs and/or attaching (as text) to an e-mail. Is there any equivalent in FileMaker Pro 6? Search as I might, I've not run across anything remotely related!

Am I missing something or is there no way to print "fit to page" or print at at a reduced percentage in PC Filemaker? You can do it on the Mac. We have layouts that were designed larger than 8.5x11 and can't figure out how to print to fit on the PC. Is it a Postscript funtion? Thanks

I've created a database "we" use for attendee management at special events. It quite literally tracks everything relative to all attendees including hotel, travel arrangements, activity selections and groupings, breakout session rotations, etc. It also produces all the attendee correspondence and reporting necessary for all suppliers. In some cases, once I've customized the database for a particular event, I pass it off to someone else to do input, produce attendee confirmations, etc. There's also a project manager who gets an update from time to time for viewing purposes only. ItemID: ABC-20LO04-00001A in layout mode 1 field easily fits: <<ItemID>> my resolution was to separate the field into 5 field that are combination of ItemID1_5 =Left () etc. ABC-20LO04-00001A <<ItemID1_5>><<ItemID2_5>><<ItemID3_5>><<ItemID4_5>><<ItemID5_5>> but now the lables laout is expanded since I am using 5 fields to represent what was originally 1.....hence the labels are no logner allgined.... the "content" of all fields combined is still the same …

I've got a script that loops through records, and prints a letter on the appropriate clients. Sometimes, after about 20 records, it will have a 2 inch wide scroll bar on the right side, that won't go away. The only way to get around it, is to close the database, and restart. Has anyone hear of anything like this before? And how do I get rid of it?? Thanks!

Hi, I am trying to print a bunch of records in table format and it is only letting me print the first page, so it only captures the first 5 columns. Is there a way to print a table when it extends more than one page? I also want to apply sliding to the table so filemaker automatically sizes each box when I print it. As far I can tell I can only use sliding in layout mode and I can't view a layout in table form in layout mode. I am I missing something here? Thanks. -Karen

Any ideas how to fix the following? I am attempting to print a report that has a subsummary. A field in the subsummary is automatically centering the text and double-spacing. I have recreated the field in the original document, re-typed the information in the original document, imported the information into a NEW document, printed to several different printers using several different print drivers, added hard returns and the problem remains. I have a DB that prints fine on most printers but not all. I'm using FMP ver 6v4 on Win XP and 2000 work stations, Server 5.5 on a Win NT server, and printing to network printers (tcp/ip). On my layout, I have text baselines selected for most of the fields. These fields are small and contain serial#'s and such. When I print the layout, some of the text baselines print and some don't. The text baselines show in the preview mode but some do not show on the printed page. Sliding has been verified off and the baseline color is black. I've got a simple text field, set up as an edit box. The user can enter "notes" in this layout. The preview shows not content in the box, even if I've tabbed through to another field and left the text in that edit box. In browse mode it looks fine, but nada in preview (and printing) mode. I have several files with full-page layouts featuring one portal with approx. 20 rows. The layout prints beautifully when told to do so from a Mac. However, it doesn't work in Windows! The result is a missing line of data mid-portal. I have tried installing new drivers, changing fonts, rebuilding the layouts...nothing works. We have Filemaker 4.1 running on Windows 2000. It crashes almost constantly when the main user tries to print to a Ricoh 3200 printer on a Netware 5.1 network. We did not have these problems when she was printing to a HP 8000. Unfortunately, we just did some moving to the second floor of the building. The HP 8000 is now on the first floor. This is probably some type of driver/setup issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

This is an odd one. I have been creating FM files since it was plain FileMaker, so am not a newbie. I recently posted a problem I had where FileMaker would not print correctly to an HP Business InkJet 2200, although none of my other apps had this problem. I was able to print to a Canon ImageRunner 5020 laser printer. Both of these printers are on our hospital's network. Still unable to resolve the original problem, I upgraded to FM Pro 7 last week. Preface: I am an intern at my office and due to my age and ability I have been drafted to use Filepro... At any rate i get the following error message and I have no idea how to rectify the situation. I have removed all headers/footers and didnt really use them to begin wtih.... 'The combined size of the header plus the footer is longer then what can fit this page. Mac, OSX.3, Epson C80, FileMaker 7. When I try to print a record out of FileMaker the print dialog comes up and under Printer it says No Printer Selected. If I click on Edit Printer list, I can see my printer and it is highlighted and set as default but when I close it the window still shows No Printer Selected. I can print out of all my other applications and I can print this file on a different computer and printer. Can't figure this one out???

I have lists with portal rows that display square containers that get filled with different colours according to calculation results. These have to be printed or preferably made into PDF files. I can do both on a Macintosh: both in system 9.2 and Jaguar, using both FileMaker 5 and 6 - with the data stored locally or on a Windows server. No problem at all. Is it possible to have a field, bound to the first page on a layout, print across more than one page if the text withing that field exceeds it's layout boundaries?

Hi there, I sure hope somebody can give me a hand on this, I've spent a couple of days trying to solve it. I have a layout with mutiple text fields (hairline borders) all stacked up one after the next. These fields contain different sections of contracts, among the files in the database they are sometimes present, sometimes not, and of varying lengths. They are set to slide up, and contracts vary in length from 2-5 pages. The problem is, at page breaks, text gets cut so that it is partly on one page, partly on the next. Hello People! I was wondering if there is a way to script/set printing of lables by user's choice where the 1st record should be printed? In other words, if I am left with a full sheet of lables and only 3 labels have been used of it...how to 'start printing' from label 4. My initial thought was to create a eg. 3 blank records but it iseems like making blank records and then deleting them after print is a waste of resource... Anyone has a workarround? Many thanx!

Wondering if anyone is using the Hardware/Software from Troy to produce MICR checks? Or for that matter another MICR type of setup. It seems to be a more economic to produce checks on blank stock then to get them from check producing places such as Deluxe etc. I am writing a solution that would be great for this. Any comments or info would be greatly appreciated, seeing that this will be a big cash outlay, i just wanted to know if someone is actually doing it and how it is handled in fm and if it is working in there solution properly. I have a layout that seems to work fine until I add the titles next to the fields then my layout gets out of whack. I tried using the sliding option but I think I am just getting tired so I decided to ask you experts to help me out. I am attaching the files. The layout is titled sales print. I need it to print on one sheet with the titles beside the information. Hello, My client has a strange problem with printing on a MAC with FileMaker 5! I tried to print a set of records (Found set) using a report which is simply an A4 letter with their name and address filled in. Simple Go to PRINT, select RECORDS BEING BROWSED - it only prints the first record in the found set - it's not even the viewed record within the set but the FIRST. It seems the only way I can print is by doing CURRENT record and flicking through and individually printing. This is not a printer setup issue - I've checked all that and it should be able to print as many pages as it likes. Any ideas? Thanks

Hello I want to print some mailing labels but when I went to create a report using the New Report/Layout wizard and selecting 'Label' the Avery labels I had bought (at great expense!) - L7160 were not on the list of standard labels. My main database is a list of articies in a newspaper indexed by issue date. When I lay out the report, it runs the first field (page number) so far to the left margin that it cuts off the page numbers. I have messed with the margins on page setup unsuccessfully. I also would like to be able to change the header to reflect the issue date so it will print at top of each report. Do I need to reformat field length so I can create decent margins?? My copier ignores the first 1/4" of every page, and I need to copy each report. Someone help, please, so I can clone the database and input 2004 issues. [color:"brown"] Thanks a million.

Rather suddenly, pages 7,8,and 9 of a 9 page layout wont print. I get the header and footer, but not the body of those pages. I have other similar layouts that print all pages. When I took a copy home to play with it, it printed fine on my computer at home. Same file, when I take it back to work won't print properly on any of the machines on our network.:?? Any ideas?? Hi, I'm having printing problems I can't figure out. Started a new database from scratch. Multiple layouts as different pages of a single report. Every time I print a layout page It prints what I want and then a second page with just the header. On pages/layouts that don't have a header or footer it just prints a second blank page. It does the same thing on my mac. (os X) and My PC (windows XP) and with either of two printers on both computers, so I don't think it is a hardware conflict. Hi, I created a solution for my wife to use at work. The whole thing is little more than an employee tracking system. I sat with her and created 1 report - a columnar report that goes down then back to the top and then down again. This report is fine. I then used this layout and duplicated it several times. I edited it and made some field changes to each of these additional reports. They all print fine except 1. On this report all the records print except for any record in space 15. Records after space 15 print fine. I know it's not the record itself because I duplicated a ton of records and of course the record that was in space 15 is now printing fine in it's new s…

Hi. I have a report that gathers all the users entries. Is there a way I can list on the bottom all users who were on that day? They log on the system with a number (account name). I want to list the account number and their name. How do I do this?

Alright.. I have looked all over for this, maybe someone can help me. Basically I'm trying to print a layout thats 11 x 8 1/2, The problem is, Filemaker is cutting off all my content below about 5 inches on the page. I see the "print area" dotted lines (thats what I assume they are). It seems that Filemaker is cutting off the print at this line, yet the printer can handle another 3+ inches of page!!! I have checked my margins, page setup everything. Even Page Break in the Part Set up.. I'm not sure if this is the right category for this question. I have a report where some fields will be a one line situation, and other entries in the same field can be a paragraph long. When I print I want the fields that happen to be one line to have the next entry directly underneath, but if I do that and the entry happens to be a paragraph, it'll cut it off. If I set the field itself to be large, then there is a bunch of white space. In Access they have an 'shrink/grow' feature that automatically makes the field the right size. Does filemaker have something like this? By the way, if you cannot tell, i'm a newbie, so thanks for the patience. Vandy

We have a multi-user setup with two Macs and two Windoze boxes, the files are hosted on one of the Macs. When a windows machine opens one of the files, it ALWAYS reverts to landscape orientation, so that when a user prints the record (without using the script that changes the page setup back to portrait), its screwed up. I do have a script that changes the page setup back and prints the record, but people usually forget to use that script and just hit ctl-P. On the Macs, if I change the page setup to portrait, close and re-open the file, that change is preserved, however that is not the case on the windows machines. Any Ideas? Lonn

I cannot get the printout of my layouts as I see on the screen with a dot matrix EPSON LX 300 +. The printout becomes much more bigger than its specified and shown sizes, charecters and tables... everything. Sorry but I don't know what to do. I need to print my invoices. Up to now on I have used Laser and all were successful. But laser gets the papers one buy one. I have more than 20 copies to print. It takes too much time... thanks in advance. I have access to a networked laser printer (Canon ImageRunner) and also a networked HP Business InkJet 2200. My FMP layouts and reports print perfectly to the laser printer, but when I try printing to the Business Inkjet the output is missing a lot. For example, a simple list of records with a header will print as just the final record - no header and no other records. It prints perfectly to the laser printer. Note that in Preview mode it also shows only the final record. Ok I know there is alot of posts with this question...and I have read them all (I think)... My questions is... I have made a script that prints a report then returns to the orginal page. I have put in the script the printing pref. Which works fine...but then I run a seperate script that prints a totally different report and the Paper layout stays like the old report... I've got a small office who are running FM PRO 6.0v4. If they print from any of several databases the HP 2200 immediately jams up, in that all three LEDS glow solid. I called HP and they had me reset the printer (here are the instructions should anyone need them: power down unit, remove jetdirect card, hold reset button and simultaneously turn machin back on and count to 8, let go and it's reset). Well, that didn't help. I determined that if you print from Filemaker 5.5 to the HP 2200 it works fine every time. Hello all, Can any one help me with these two printing / layout problems please. I have a policy file of around 100 policies. Each policy is printed on a layout up to 3 pages long. The layout has a header and a footer: 1. When printed, the Preview does not show which lines actually end up on which page - I believe that this is because of the header and footer. Is there a way around this to enable to user to obtain wysiwyg ? 2. I have a report that I'm printing multiple copies. I've had to resort to printing them on our office Canon because my Tektronix's collate feature is greyed out - and FileMaker ignores the setting in the print dialog box. I've checked Xerox's website, went through the setups on the printer, setups on the Mac (even replaced the PPD files) but nothing will bring it back. It used to work... Only major change was to 10.3.4 and the security updates. Anybody able to shed some light on this?

In one of my layouts, I include a text field that contains widely varying amounts of text. Sometimes a line or 2. Sometimes more than 2 pages. Two questions: 1. Is there a way I can script/calculate for conditional printing? Basically what I want to do is look into 4 individual fields on a given layout and if those fields are populted I then want them to goto a specific layout and print that layout. I ultimately want to ad this script/calcualtion to the end of an alredy fairly involved printing script.
