I am a first time user of a Filemaker 3.0 Pro and I have a database that has Names, Addresses, & Phone Numbers in a list. The problem is that the Phone Numbers are a straight 10 digits (without the hyphens). I need to reformat the field to include the hyphens. There are approximately 3400 entries on this list. Too many to add 1 at a time. Is there a way to add the hyphens to the numbers all at once. I am using Windows 98 and am a relative novice to computers, but do possess some very basic skills.

I want to insert in a Filemaker database many images located on a disk. I don't want the images located directly in the FM database. I have to insert about 20 images for each records of the database. I want a single field for the image that can display all the images one by one with a click on a buttom. Can I do this in Filemaker Pro ?

Just installed MacOS 10.3 a.k.a Panther on my dual 867 Mhz G4. Installing the OS and drivers for the USB ISDN modem went really smooth, was up and running in half an hour or so. Then I 'did' Filemaker 6.0v3 which also seems to be work straight away, including network access. we have two very serious problems: 1) when we recovered the FileMaker Pro 4.0 this morning, the system didn't show up any file lost or skipped after finished, however, we really did lost some records. what should we recover it? 2) we have two database(1 good, 1 bad) in FM4 and we like to retrive some good records from the bad data base and import the record to the good databas. How do I export the fields in the same layout formats of found records of bad database ? I did try to export all fields to a file in FM format, but the layout aren't the same. Thanx George Hsu

Using Windows XP, I am trying to run Filemaker 3.0v5. (This has happened on two computers that have been set up for me to use, same problem). The problem is: As I try open a database that I created last week, occasionally it brings up this message: "The instruction at '0x77f58267' referenced memory at '0xfffffff8'. Hello, I am running FMPU 6.0v4 (Educational) on Mac OS X 10.2.8 (the last one) / 733 G4 Quicksilver / 1.25 Gigs ram Over the last month I have noticed what I thought were increasing crashes, however after looking at 'top' when these things occur, FileMaker is actually just taking up 96-98% of the CPU. Normally FMP only takes up about 10-12% and spikes to 20% during heavy periods of traffic. So this is not a crash situation as the system still runs, no crash dialog boxes come up, it's just using too much of the CPU to serve any more pages. Quick Question... I want to create an "If" script function, there are 4 values that the field can possibly contain, "Y" "Z" "A" and "N". If the field contains Y,Z,A then filemaker needs to perform that specific script, but if the valus is "n" then it need to run a different script. I cannot figure out what the if function would be set up as...

It might just be the point that the coffee has not kicked in yet or maybe I am just going brain dead but here is my question. I have an FM 6 database with 150,000 + records which I update on a weekly basis from sales transactions. The ideal way for the database to appear is with the most recent imported records at the top. Since this is a chronological history of sales, this would display this most recent sales first and the oldest at the "bottom". I am able to permanently Re-sort the database by sorting it and then importing it into a clone of itself, but this is a very time consuming process (it takes about 2-3 hours for the import). Each time I update the database with the most recent records, they show up at the "bottom" of the list, instead of at the top, and then the database is no longer …

This error message keeps coming up when opening a database created in FileMaker 3.0 on Windows. The computer may or may not have had a virus. In addition, we cannot print to one of our printers from Filemaker, yet it prints to two of the other printers on our network fine? I have a database with several records. Among the other, field A is indexed, B can't be. Very often I perform a find inserting criteria on A and B. for example A=192 B>0 Unfortunately (and without any logic) FM first searches for the records matching B>0 and then constrain the found set to the records that match A=192. This way it takes 10 seconds on 30000 records. If it would operate the opposite way (searching for the indexed field first and non-indexed after) it would take 0,1 seconds. H all Can someone please advise what are the 'limits' to the so called 'unlimited' version of Filemaker. I have a solution that has 36 files in total hosted, guests that access it (via FM standard) only open the files they need, which may be from five to ten each (I have it set up to close off files no longer required after login etc to minimise open files on the user end (concurrent connections)), but I have just struck a host limit error - haha - so much for unlimited! Is there a way to use tokens that carryover to a popup window? Currently I keep losing the thread. Or can I use cookies to suppliment for a token, and some how import the data back to the token? I heard good things about Lasso and session threads. But not sure what the limits of cookies and tokens are.

Here is a hopefully simple question that I cannot figure out. I have a 20 value number (i.e. "1234567894561233 123") Everything after the space I do not need. Is there a way for filemaker to delete the last 4 values in that number without a person maunally deleting it. I would like the number just to be "1234567894561233". The numbers are imported from a txt file preformatted like the above example.

I just finished migrating our office from classic mac 8.1 to OSX 10.2. The biggest hold up was moving the user dictionaries. I exported as text in 8.1, but could not import in as text in OSX. The staff was not happy with me as there are thousands of medical terms accumulated over years of use. Now that i have survived this, is this a known issue? I have any invoicing system. Databases - customers and sales items. Customers has a layout - Invoice. Some customers that have a small amount of sales items, they only need a 1 page invoice, but a some customers need a 2 page invoice. Hi, I'm new to FM Pro having just purchased it. My business partner has a copy of the Mac version 6 and I have the Windows version 6. We want to share a common database with one another that we can both access and update from our separate locations. We both have broadband and we also have a domain that is hosted. I've read about sharing files over a network but it appears that only works for a LAN and we don't want to use the Web Publishing option. I have been experiencing this error on certain workstations running W2K and FileMaker Pro 5v3 and 5.5v2. Hi, We're building a FMP 6 database that is basically a library catalog of museum artifacts. Our loans system is dependent on dates example: due date=today +14 ; no. of days late= today-due date etc. If we go into the computer's settings and change the date, it then affects dates of all new loans. For eg. change the computer's date to 1/1/1900 and the due date with be 1/15/1900. Is there a way for us to "lock" the date system used on the computer so no one else can change it? Hi there, just received some feedback from my customer, ther said that can we set the tab key to enter key on numeric keypad. They found that they are more like to use enter key on the numeric keypad in order to go to next field, they say it is more faster for data entry, and most of the software there using in pc are all using enter key for go to next field. I know that we can use a looping with pause/resume script to do this, but pause the system is not the best way to solve it, they need to enter until end of the field then only will exit the script.So is that have any way to switch the function of tab key to enter key in FM? I have a filemaker runtime solution that I have been working with for the better part of a year now. It is operating commercially on 40 computers. Of course, over the year it has evolved as all solutions do. Recently I employed an idea that I've had for a while to incorporate images in a sort of "screensaver" kind of operation. I have a layout with the following parts in it: Title sub summary sub summary body footer When I view it in browse mode everything appears as I expect, when I switch to previw, everything appears as I expect again. Then, If I perform a find, the browse is correct, but when I switch to preview mode, everything in the two sub summary parts does not show up. If I switch back to browse they are there. If I show all the records and then go back to preview the sub summarys don't show up again. I have a bunch of fields with specifc formatting, such as font and font size, but when I paste text into those fields, the formatting is always that of the original source. More than that, in a portal, a related field is coming up with the formatting of that field in the original file, not the portal. Is there any way I can get this to stop -- it's really a pain. I'm thinking of moving from FM6 Pro to FM unlimited to accomodate more users both internal and external. One of the questions I have is with using IIS with the web connector. My solution is hosted on an NT box with IIS. I like to know how the security databases interact with NT security. I don't want our internal users to have to type in a password since they are already logged into our domain. The internet users should have to log in to obviously keep unwanted people out. Can I use NT authentication only as a security strategy? Or do I have to use the web security databases in FM? Or can they be mixed? I've been looking for a Web Hosting company that supports Mac's and offers both, hosting a Web Site and offers help in it's design. It must be the "design" part that does not support Mac's. I'm working on converting a project from Access to FM6. On Access, I have a file that stores all the code (Forms(Layouts), Reports, Tables(DataBases), Macros, VB, etc) and another file that stores all the data. The Tables(DataBases) in the main file are "linked"(they point) to the data file, so whenever I need to make changes to the Forms(Layouts) I don't have to interrupt work on the data file. I make my modifications to the main file and then replace the main file in my customer's host with the newly updated main file, all without affecting the work being done on the data file. How can I accomplish the same effect with FM6?

Okay, this one is baffling even the people at Microsoft. This one woman attempts to use the application as a guest. So she clicks on the icon and it attempts opening the files from the FMS as guest. It gets about 2 or 3 DBs open and she gets the error "Filemaker.exe has generated an error and will now close". If anybody else logs onto her computer and runs the application it works fine. No errors. This led us to there being something wrong in her profile so we deleted her profile and tried again. Everything worked fine. Until she logged off and logged back on after lunch. Okay, I now have a script that connects the client to the server and opens the application. What I tried doing was putting that DB on the desktop so when clicked on it opens FMP and then should open the db and run the script. Seems logical. But it doesn't work. I looked all thru the manuals for how to do this and the only answer is to use the SDK and bind all the files, which I don't want to do. So how can I make an icon on the desktop that will open and run a script?

Is it possible for a summary part to be dependent on two fields? I have a summery field dependent upon one field, but it really needs to be two. I don't want to have to create a new summarry field for the second field because whenever one of the fields changes I need the whole summary to show again. I have an opportunity to get an XServe running OSX Server, which I would use just to run FMPro Unlimited. I would probably disable all other services on the computer. I know this sounds like a waste, but we purchase computers every 3 years, and I'm hoping the next version of Filemaker will run better on OSX Server. I have heard rumors of data corruption, etc. on OSX Server. We don't have too many database files, and don't have too much traffic. I am creating a database using FileMaker Developer 6, and learning as I go. It appears that many of my files have been corrupted, as FileMaker quits on me several times a day. The files open up again and run fine (no recovery required) after quitting, but I cannot give this database to my workgroup until it is stable. Hello; A specific question: In the Solution Framework sample app, I've cloned a new report from the product invoice in the lineitems.FP5 file, now want to add it to reports.FP5, but get the message - "Report ID values must be unique and assigned by the developer of the system" when I try to add a record. Hi all, Not sure what words could be appropriate. Here is the case. I have a script that generates in a loop from 20,000 to 30,000 records. When the loop is over, FM needs obviously some time to index all what has been entered through the loop, which somehow "locks" the user that had been driven to another file. I'd like to make them wait in another layout with a "please wait" message, but how can I control how long they should stay there. Pausing the script won't solve the problem I think (Am I wrong ?). It appears to me, correct me if I'm wrong, that the biggest problem with FM is the inability to seperate the interface from the data. I would like to update the layouts without having to take the whole application off line. However, FM won't let me do this. Is there anyway to do a "hot swap" of layouts without having to swap out the entire db?

How do you set FM up to be in a certain layout when you first open a file? I have two views on one database (1 and 2)... i did a lot of work on view2 and the user should be working on that when they open up the file... but it always startsup in view1. is there a script i can make that will instruct FM to do this automatically?

Hello Everyone, I have a client configuration running Webstar with Web Server Connect one one iMac, FMPro Server on one iMac, and FMPro 5.5 Unlimited on two other iMacs. All iMacs are running OS 9.x. Recently, I was informed that the Webstar server constitutes a security breach for my client because it has an open proxy on port 8000. I reconfigured Webstar (and restarted it) to limit to and from access on the proxy to only the IPs used by the four iMacs. However, the proxy is still coming up as open to the public on the security tests and so we are having to shut down Webstar and go back to using a single iMac as our web server. What are the major differences in running an application with FMS or in multi-user in FMP? I'm thinking of running the application in FMP as multi-user vice FMS. Of course one problem is I get an error when I open it up in FMP on the server for some reason. I don't get the error when I open it on another machine in FMP. It is an OLE error. Strange.

Stumped! 8.5 X11 printout stops printing after 8.5" when i choose landscape. Still does it when i tried legal Portrait . I am printing business cards that are 2" x 3.5" which is 4 rows by 3 columns and need landscape to work. I suspect that there is some setting in FMP that i cant find that will stop this problem. If there was some way to rotate my filemaker bus card project so it ran 8.5 X11 i would be ok. Why am i unable to print a 8.5 X11 sheet in landscape mode?? thanks roy

This has bugged me for years. The on-screen display of Filemaker sometimes gets jaggy or fuzzy. Type doesn't display correctly. It's skewed and unreadable at any size. It can happen anytime, but usually occurs when changing magnification. Doesn't matter what font is open. I'm on a mac G4, using OSX (although the same problem existing on previous macs, with earlier systems... Filemaker 6.0v4. The same display bug affects other programs when FMPro is open! I'm saving eps images in a filemaker container field as references. Since filemaker actually only saves the thumbnail, the images are not so clear. Is there any way to force filemaker to save the actual image and not the thumbnail?

I generated a form, lets call it "work order". It works fine in browse mode and I can print it from browse mode, but I can only email the "work order" if I copy it in preview mode and paste it as a picture into my email. This works OK because I usually email one or two at a time. My problem is that when I switch to preview from browse I get a preview of the first "work order" in a list of a couple of thousand. Now if I copy the record number under the little book icon in browse and then paste it under the book icon in preview I get the order I want to email. What is the best way to format color text in ALL field of selected records? In other words, I don't want my WHOLE database to be color text, just selected records. I can format color text one field at a time, but that is slow and tedious. There must be a better way. [color:"red"]

Hi all, I need FM 5.5 in MSI format to deploy to WIndows clients. I have tried to package FM using a 3rd party packaging tool. Many features do not work while deploying FM this way. I created a layout and placed a global field in the header. When I was testing I had the layout in "View by Form" mode. As soon as I switch to "View as List" of course it stops working. I can see the logic of this in a List view with regular fields. But with Globals, it would seem that it would handy if they worked in List view as well. I am using 5.5. Is this resolved in 6.0? How does FM 3.0 keep track of the different sessions and users? Cookies?

We use FileMaker in our office, and we would like to be able to have our service technicians be able to access the customer database via laptop while on the road for printing out work orders for customers. We have wireless internet for all the laptops. We realized that using the Web feature is not going to work because the database would have to be re-desinged for the web......we do not want to do that. We would like for the techs to be able to access the same info, same screens and everything while on the road. We tried a VPN solution, but that it much too slow. Does anybody have a better solution? I have 4 layouts in a database, each is one page of a form. I have combined them all into a 5th layout to make printing easier. The problem is different users print to different printers each with different margins set up. This causes the text to flow differently based on the available print area.... Given that I have a Body part which is 4 pages long, and I have each page laid out small enough to print to the printer with the least available print area, is there any way to insert page breaks (3 total) into the Body part so that regardless of which printer is being used, I don't get text reflow? I have a [Cusomer] file with a portal to an [Employee] file. The field in the portal is "Salesperson" name. The portal allows 3 "Salesperson" names only. What I need to do is set up (and I need your help here) a separate field called "OriginalSalesPerson". This field will hold the first salesperson listed in the first portal row. 30 days hath september... I'm trying to figure out how to make my date range work. I want to find monthly reports. I've figured out the basic mechanism for getting a date range into a find script (using Insert Calculated Result, not Set Field), but I'm having trouble with the actual calculation.: The problem is the month's ending date. Since they vary, I need to account for all possible months. I also just realized that my script won't work in January. How can I make this work?

As you've probably guessed by the subject line, I'm new to Filemaker (and databases in general). I'm building a database using OS X but the database will probably reside on a Windows box & will be accessed by people running Windows as well. Is this possible? Are there specific things I'll have to do to make the database work in an environment different from the one in which it's been developed? I have a "PurchaseDate", "ExperationDate" and "Term" fields. The calculation I need is this. When a date is entered into "PurchaseDate" and a number of months is entered into "Term" I need the "ExperationDate" to calculate the date the contract expires. Hi, Was not sure where I should post this request for info. Am using FMP 5.5 v.2, having previously converted from Access. In my Access days, I was able to set up field skips and navigate cursor locations based upon field value criteria, eg. If field x = 1 go to field y, if field x = 2 or 3 or 4 etc go to field z (or wherever). How do I do this in Filemaker as an automated non calculated non scripted field or button? Thanks

I have two Pop-Up lists in my Contact file. The first one is Manufacturer and the other is Model. What I want to have happen is this. Once a "Manufacturer" is selected from the manufacturer filed, when you click on the "Model" field, only models related to that specific manufacturer are shown as possible choices. I've created a accounts receivable database that holds invoices, payments, and adjustments in the same database file. This seems to work well. I liked the suggestion in this forum about determining past due invoices by customer balances....rather than individual invoice records. So, my question. I've written a script that will run periodically to update past due accounts. This script takes a long time (1 hour or so). I would like to update all the customer records on start-up each day. I find it extremely annoying that FMU doesn't run as a daemon and is solely a server app..... I don't think my OSX machine should have to log into an account to run a FMU served DB. (of course I also have the same problems with FMServer). -Ric

We're using filemaker server to host 30 or so databases to 25 users all over the world using terminal services. One of the users in Asia flies alot and would like to make updates to the database while on the airplane and (for the time being)does not have Internet access. Is there anyway that this user can use a stand-alone copy of the database, syncronize his changes into the server databases AND not remove any changes that the other users may have made to the syncronized records?

In a Sub-Summary report, which is viewed in preview mode, How do I create a field which displays the summary of items listed in the report? I have a few databases and CDML pages out there - currently using FileMaker Pro 6. I am now finding the user limit to be an issue, so I am going to go to FileMaker Pro Unlimited...is there anything I should be aware of as far as going from FM Pro 6 to the FM Pro unlimited? Would I be housing the pages and databases in the same way - or are there some differences is the set up?

Hey can anybody tell me is there any way to stop FMPRO 6 unlimited closing the opened files automatically after sometime maybe when idle. I have FM server and FM pro unlimited on two different machines. ANd i am trying to host some of the FM server Files onto web using FM PRo 6 unlimited.
