FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

I am trying to make a report and I keep getting the same information even though I specify different query options. I have made a copy of my database and have recovered all of my files.....but...I still get the same report......with a different date. Any solutions???

Everytime I open a record in the active list it recreates itself on the Data entry list, as a new record, despite already exising, essentially duplicating itself, but as a new record. I don't have any scripts running with such a command. Why is this happening? Eilish

I am trying to sumarize the cost of multiple entries in a portal, but that very same portal with the very same information, can appear on multiple records within the same database (they all have a common customer). I am trying to run a billing report for that customer and say, if I have 3 records for that customer, I now have the portal summary 3 times. I only need it summarized once within those 3 records.... how do I have a portal only summarize itself once while showing up over multiple records?

I need to create a field the header of my list view that always shows the current date, so that when it is printed it is obvious when the list is acurate from. This field will never be modified, so telling it to auto-enter the mod date is no good. Any ideas?

I understand how to use the find mode. However, something strange is going on when I press the FIND button I created. It points to the script: PERFORM FIND [RESTORE] GO TO LAYOUT[FORM] EXIT SCRIPT For some reason, my Position field is always set to "Designers" even though the blank find form is empty. And no matter what I try to find, (employee name or another position), it always shows the designers... using my find button. Otherwise it's ok when I press the filemaker's FIND button. Strange! All I want to do is Search based on what is inside a field. (This is so simple but I cant' do it with a button) What is the best way? Thanks, J

I am using Filemaker Server 3.04 and Filemaker 4.1 on a Macintosh platform with about 8 users. I keep getting this message from the FM server Unrecoverable Error Occured (10199) and the FM Server Quits. Any idea what the code indicates or means?

I have a field 'power' which has to be a number for sorting purposes. In almost every record this field contains a single 2 or 3 digit number. Sometimes it contains two number like '93 / 125'. How can I define a calculation field that just captures the left number. Using NumToText and LeftWords does not seem to work. Any thoughts? Help much appreciated. Chris

I need to create a field within my list view that retrieves ONLY the newest entry from a differant, repeating field. Right now it is only showing the OLDEST entry from the repeating field!

I have a report layout set up that I am having difficulty controlling the page breaks with. I have 3 individual parts that I want grouped together and not break between page breaks. I have a subsummary at the beginning, a body, and another subsummary. Basically it is a heading, some data, then a total. Is there a utility to treat the 3 parts as one and not allow a page break between the 3 parts? Hope this is clear. Thanks, Kim

I'm building a Kiosk solution and have 2 related questions: Is there any way to get a layout that is used for data retrieval to display in the middle of a screen, instead of in the upper left corner? Is there any way to put a frame around this type of layout, so it stays where all the other layouts are which are dead center and not full screen length? I assume because this layout is used for data retrieval, FM5 automatically adds a scroll bar and utilizes the entire screen length. Thanks for any suggestions. Steve

Hi. I'm in a position where I have a DB that has multiple uses, with only slight tweaking of each layout. Is there a way to automatically associate a layout with a record so that FileMaker will change layouts when browsing from record to record? It would be easy to associate a record with a layout by using a value list and a script, but how can I make FileMaker execute the associated script when browsing? jeff

I am using version 3 of the SDK binder so that I can have a multi user runtime solution. I have a database that has 3 fields and 100+ records. Is there anyway to display in browse mode more than one column of records? I can set it up in preview mode to view more than one column but I am restricting acess to edit only so my users have no way to get back to browse mode. Thanks, Brian

Using Filemaker 5 (win) and want to store images in a container field. The database also needs to be accessed through a network, and when I enter an image and store the reference as opposed to the actual image, network users cannot access that image from a different machine. Any hints on how to get a network user to read a path that will find the image? Or any hints on any way to make it work over a network?

If your product database does not contain unique occurances of each product then you should create another level. For example You may have a product database ID / Item 101 = Universal Widget 102 = Left Handed Widget 103 = Right Handed Widget And you could have sub levels for each product. A seperate file would be a child of the main product.. 100.01 = Universal Widget (Small) 100.02 = Universal Widget (Medium) 100.03 = Universal Widget (Large) I hope this helps a little. I have a membership database that is accessed by 2 other people on a network. I have script that runs when the database is first open, that says.... If Status(CurrentSortStatus) * 1 Sort [Restore, No Dialog} End If I don't know why, but whenever the other two people connect to my database, they immediately experience a sort....even if I have sorted the database already. The sort is done on surname and first name after that. It's happening every time and it just seems very odd. Any advice welcome, Phil

I have two departments who want to share a FM DB across a small WAN. The performance is poor, so I had the bright idea of locating an FM Server on either coast, and letting the daily edits stay local. I would then somehow sync the two using scripts overnight. The new import feature in FM5 allows this, in a messy sort of way, except for deletes. I don't know how to accommodate deleted records. Also - am I way off base here - these files use a lot of scripts, so I don't believe offering them using the web interface would help - I don't think you can run scripts in the browser. Any ideas to help would be much appreciated.

I'm new to filemaker, so there is probably an easy answer to this. I inherited a program that requires the user to start a new record by entering a number. The number has to be "not empty", and "unique". The problem is the user can't get out of the screen (cancel) the input without first typing in a number. This is annoying in the extreme. Any ideas?

If a user has a quotation mark (") in a field and I want to remove it, how do I go about doing this? I tried: code: Replace(description,""","") which would obviously replace any quotations in the field with nothing, but this does not work. Help, I have a PO form in PO d/b with a portal window that has several details per PO, that is stored individually in PODetails d/b. All I want to do is have a button that jumps to that other file with the related record based on the contents in the portal row. HI, I have a task schedule set up. When a task is completed I would like to send the complete record to an other fm file like completed orders.fm5 and remove it from the schedule file so as to not clutter things up. I have set up a script which exports to a temp file and and a completed order file which imports form that file but it is mighty cumbersome and also can crash fm. How can I prevent the user from deleting records from the menu while allowing him to delete records through a command button? I only want the user to be able to delete records created today. Where does FileMaker get today's date from? Does it get it from the FileMaker Server? Or the users' computer?

Being new with Filemaker, I have looked at some templates to get an idea of what type of user interface looks good. I really like the "tabs" type of interface at the top of each layout form, rather than the Menu method, because of the one-click interface. How does this get setup? I am new to the forums and I am sure this topic has been discussed, but... FileMaker 3.0 and 4.0 use 99% of the CPU when any FMP dialog box is open under Windows 2000. This is a real problem, especially for laptop users (try leaving a dialog box [eg: ScriptMaker] open for awhile on an 800MHz laptop and see how hot it gets!) Does anyone have some background information on this problem? Does FileMaker, Inc recognize the problem? Thank you.

I do not have an ISP that provides CGI capabilities. I am currently using a free hit counter, but don't like the fact is is redirected to another server just to record page hits. Is there any way to use logging in FMP Unlimited or through IIS to provide information for a hit counter?

I finally have the time to look at FM5 and I downloaded the trial version. When I open my 4 databases and type in my admin password everything opens fine but I cannot access layout, scripts, etc. The templates that come with it allow me to access the entire file so I know it's not a trial limitation. I handle registrations for a boy's camp. One field that is entered is the boys birth date. Since FileMaker treats a 2 digit year from 00 to 89 as a 20xx year, there are often incorrect entries if someone (often me) forgets to put in all 4 digits for the year. I have set up the field name (birthdate) to change to ERROR if this happens, but this is not sufficient to be noticed easily. Is there a way to make it change to red or flash or some other way to make it obvious that an error has been made? Dave

For one file, I built a file that's a small calendar that pops up when a date is clicked on, then the user picks a date and that date is issued to the date field of the original file. I have a few tables that, combined, have the necessary data to create an invoice: Transactions contains all the details about the payment, shipping, customer info, etc. Orderline contains the line items for each order. There is a one to many relationship from transactions to orderline. Products contains product information. It is related to orderline because orderline only contains the SKU for a product and the subtotal (quantity x price). I have created a series of layouts to serve as a slide show presentation using buttons to move through the slides. For presentation purposes, I would like to eliminate/hide the vertical and horizontal scroll bars and the top menu bar. Can anyone help me with this? Is this possible? On an input screen the inputter will enter a leave date, leave hours and then select from an popup menu a three letter code. I want to transfer the leave hours to a field which name is the same as the three letter code. e.g. 1/21/01,8 hours, CWL. Transfer 8 to a field called CWL. I have used Filemaker 3.0 on Macs for several years and am quite familiar with the product. I recently installed Filemaker 5.0 and updater .03 on my PC which runs Windows 95. For some reason when I'm in LAYOUT MODE and I copy and paste a field (in the same layout or other layout in same file) the pasted field does not appear when I switch to BROWSE MODE. The repasted field appears as though it is still in LAYOUT MODE and cannot be accessed. Is this a feature/problem with FM 5.0 or is it a problem with my installation? Thanks, Vince.

I am using a repeating field with 200 lines to comprise the body of a proposal. In this case FM is replacing what was previously done in Excel. Here is my dilema. I'm trying to make a relationship between two records based on a text field. This text field in the Master file may not contain all the same text as the related field, but the related field would contain all the text in the Master File match field. Filemaker book says Formulas work, but is that only for numbers? Can someone suggest how this might work?

Hi all We have been running FilemakerPro Server on a NT4 machine for almost a year, without any major mishaps. This morning, the Server crashed, and the backup tapes we had been using show the backed up FMP data as being non accessible. This left us with no other option than to rebuild the server, which I have done, with the main concern being to get FMP up and running again. Well, the serever is up, but when I was installing FMP Server, the installation asks for the installation code. Use the Save a Copy As command from the File menu or in a script. I actually use a script that runs automatically each time you exit the databae and rotates through three different backups i.e BackUp1.fp5, BackUp2.fp5 and BackUp3.fp5. That way you always have a copy of the database from the last three times you closed it or activated the back up script.

Well, The subject pretty much says it all. FMS 3.0 is installed on a WinNT SP6 computer. The server service start up fine, and all databases are opened. Unfortunately, none of our clients can see the databases (or the server) as online when they click "Hosts" in the 'Open Database' box. Even when I manually define the host (type in the IP adress), it does not see the Server/Databases. The Server PC performs well in other functions of the network and has the latest FMS patch installed. Anybody have any idea what is causing this ?

I would like to use FMP5 Server and FMP5 Unlimited running on two NT boxes (one server and other workstation) to publish 15 DBs to an intranet of approx. 125 users of which only 10 to 15 will be concurrent users at any given time. The DBs are mostly less than 5000 records. The environment is a Novell Network 4.1x, Windows 95 clients. Question: Are FMP5 Server and FMP5 Unlimited capable of handling this environment or do I have to look at something like Cold Fusion? I understand FMP5 Unlimited is single-threaded? True? Mike

Dear FileMaker Users, My FM Help file refers to a 'New Request' option for doing multiple finds (an 'or' function). In my version of FileMaker Pro (Macintosh, 4.1v3) however, the commands 'New Request' and 'Duplicate Request' are not on the Mode Menu, and indeed are nowhere to be found! Just wondering if anyone knew a workaround or plug in that allowed the use of more than the first 15 digits in calculations. I was caught off guard by this. 15 digits is a lot. Generally it will work, but not using the rest of the data to process some calcs results in different answers. This is not acceptable when digits 16, 17, 18, ... are very important. Thank you JW

Hi, I'm new to FM and am trying to crunch some numbers in a file which has over 460K records. (A Whopping 411MBs after a few relookup). I keep crashing the program when I try a summary field (named TOTALAMT) which adds all the number values in a field called AMT from each record. Is there any way that this can be done? I thought it would be as simple as using the "Save As" command, but this doesn't seem to work. I administer a FM Pro 5 database which contains, among other things, e-mail addresses for a group of contacts. I would like to be able to send e-mail to specific contacts using FM. My e-mail software is Groupwise 5.5- however I am having difficulty integrating the two pieces of software. Does anyone have any advice on how to make this happen? I can get as far as using the send mail script in FM, but nothing seems to happen except a "Print" job is generated. All help is appreciated! Ok. I read your posts, and several others, regarding the limits on using scripts. While everyone agrees that the Go to layout script/button should work with instant publishing, I'm not able to get it to work when accessed from a browser. I have FileMaker Pro 5v Unlimited published database using the "wheat" option on a Beige G3 running OS 9.0.4 . (The button/script works without a hitch on the G3 server, just not when published and accessed from the browser.) All suggestions welcomed.... Thanks, jeff

Would like to be able to tell who is adding records to a simple database. Is there any kind of script to poll the windows and auto enter a unique number/name from the particular machine or sign on info?? Thanks in advance.

Have Filemaker 4 and have bound a solution for commerial sales. Am ready to release an updated version which will allow users to change layouts and define new fields. During binding, I am not checking "Permanently remove access to Define Fields, Define Relationships, Scriptmaker, and Access Privileges" yet they are not available on the outputed bound soultion. I have removed all passwords from the document preferences before binding. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

I have looked in the FMP User Guide, help, FileMaker's web site, and this formum for information on how to show/hide a given field (radio button) and its label in a custom form contingent upon whether one of the buttons ("yes") has been checked. THe goal is not to encrypt information, but rather just to show the field in the custom form if and only if the "yes" button has been checked. Can someone please point me in the appropriate direction to accomplish this? Many thanks in advance!

Has anyone encounterd a problem where The FMServer 3.0 won't start, and gives you an error message saying "returned error code 50." Do you know what this code means? And if you do, how can I fix it. Post here, or email me at [email protected]. By the way, I can't uninstall the server. I've tried reinstalling, and using the patches, but neither worked. This is in WinNT also. Thanks in advance. Thank you very muh for the response but I'm still a little confused. To be more speific: I have a "JOBS DB" with a customer name field and a job status radio field with "open and closed" Now I have a DB named "BILL" I have a field to choose active customers with a pop up menu field. I need my field "job" to be a pop up menu to list only open jobs for the particular customer previously choosen in the customer field. Sorry, but I hope other people are learning something besides myself.

I'm sending a company a copy of a FMP5 database I developed for them to consider purchasing. I want to limit them to only 25 records for this demo version. Any suggestions on how to put this limit into the file I'm sending to them? Thanks

Does anyone know how to set up multiple validations for a single field? For instance, I have 3 fields that use the same value list. Once someone selects a name for Field1, I don't want them to select the same name for Field2 without a warning. I've tried using the "Validated by Calculation" function with the following formula: not Field1 AND not Field3 (this would be for Field2). This validation does not seem to work (ie the validation returns as okay when it should return a validation error). If I only use one field in the calculation (for example: not Field1), the validation works. However, this doesn't solve my problem. Any help would be greatly, greatly apprec…

We created an importer database in filemaker 4 for PC, in the Dutch language using European number conventions. (4.000,00 = 4,000.00). When data is imported from a simple comma delimmited data file, the numbers read (for instance) 41,99 for 41.99. However, when the data was exported to another file and used in calculations, the comma was not treated as a decimal and the number became (in value) 4,199 (as opposed to $41.99). We then converted the files to my Mac, converting to US number conventions and the same thing is occuring. We played around with all the system formats, etc. Has anyone heard of such a problem and any suggestions on how to fix it??? Thanks

I have a couple of databases running on FMP5 Unlimited, on Win NT4.0. FMP5 cache set to 9999. I have several scripts written in FMP5 to email lists of people that are triggered from web events. These scripts take several minutes to complete. While one of these scripts is running, access to the other databases is halted until the scripts complete. Also, if i do a time intensive search on one database, access to the others seems to be suspended until the long search completes. Shouldn't FMP5 be capable of more than one web operation at one time? This is why I bought the unlimited package.
