Hi everyone.. I have finish my file and i did not know from when and nowhere comes this dotted line in between it. it is kind of similar to the body/footer dotted line but is not. I cannot click on it and no info shown there when I roll over it. Problem is when I go to preview, it never shows me all the stuffs that is under that line. and when I print it just like what the preview shown, my stuffs not there... Help! Thanks a lot..

I don't know where to place this question. I have a layout with a date field from a related table. The relationship is one client (current file) to many (related table) service dates. The relationship is sorted in reverse chronological order, so the latest date is the one that displays on screen, showing me the last scheduled date of service for each client. Now for the wierdness. I want to be able to search for people with a particular last service date. When I put in a single date, the search works pretty well. However, if you use the Filemaker range feature (11/15/2005..11/30/2005), the software returns every client with a date later than the first date. I'm …

Hi all, I'm looking for a really lean technique to highlight the current active record in a list view. I want a good strong color change so that the active record is just plain stupid obvious. I did it with a hidden button and a calculated container but it feels clunky and unnatural. I want it to be smooth and automatic so that no matter where a user "is", the active record already contains the highlight without any funny button business.

Hi, I have a table of line items (invoices). What I want to do is produce a report with the items sorted in (amongst other things) date order. I wanted to create a subsummary of the month so I created a field which was month(date) Obviously this is based on the number of the month, rather than the name so as to sort correctly This works a treat. The problem is if there is April 2004 and April 2005, it doesn't differentiate. Obviously I can't just add the year to the month because if there is for example August 2004, and January 2005, as a calc number august 2004 (2012) is larger than january 2005 (2006). Here's what I want to do: For each record, I want a field in which I enter a number. I want a second field on the layout to keep a sum of all the numbers entered in the first field. I have a scrolling text input field that has no limits placed on the amount of text the user can enter. I need to place the field on a report and specify that the field stretch vertically to accommodate the amount of text the user has entered so that nothing is clipped off in the printed report. Instructions I've read say to make the field as big as the largest amount of text the field may hold, but I don't know the largest amount. Could conceivably go for pages (users will be cutting/pasting into the field). Does FM8 have some sort of "auto-stretch" feature? Is there some sort of workaround to deal with cases like this? Thx.

Im currently setting up a management system in which I enter in all my client information. I have setup different pages/tables for different information, Example: 'Project Info' / 'Task List' / 'Invoice' / Etc.. Now, at the top of each page i want to display the clients name which is entered in a field on the 'Project Info' page/table. How do i display that field on all the other pages/tables? OK, this may be impossible, but here goes. I have a layout where the user selects a radio button on a graphical layout to evaluate a student. The radio buttons are quite far apart, to fit into the pretty table design (See example here if the image doesn't show below) I originally managed to get the spacing of the radio buttons by putting a lot of spaces in the value list-- i.e., the value list looks like "1....","2.....", "3........", etc. (where the "...."s are actually spaces). I have two different layouts that I print just the records that have a tax amount. One tax amount is for one person and the other for another. When I go to print it shows that I have 244 records out of 1066 that have tax. I print that out and close the file. The other file has 99 records out of 1066 that has a tax amount. Now the problem is when I go to to my Full Inventory layout and click on the button, instead of showing me all 1066 records, it shows me 244 records out of the 1066 or 99 out of 1066,depending which tax file I just printed out. Please assist: I have a few fields in the 'contacts' table: firstname lastname title phone number email I am not sure if i need a portal or just a layout function to do this. I would like to have a certain size window (with a scrollbar set at 700 pixels wide by 400 pixels high) to show the contacts associated with the particular company. Hello, I realize that my title seems a bit odd, but I don't know how else to describe the screen redraw problem I'm having on Windows (I develop on a Mac, which seems immune to this particular problem). I'm using FMP 8.0v1 Advanced. One example where this weird screen redraw occurs is deleting a portal row. I imagine there's a way to build a printable layout that has one set of data in the first page header and footer, but different data on subsequent pages. I have a sign-in sheet that is constructed weekly for multiple locations at a time. I have inserted the "date symbol" into a layout and have formatted the date to be of the "November 1, 2005" format. In preview and browse modes, and when I print the date appears as "November *, ****" Where the asteriks are really rectangular boxes. The text field is plenty big to show the whole date. Has anybody else had this problem or know how to fix it? Thanks

Im currently creating my own database and want to copy the layout of the standard 'to do list' layout. Now, im guessing there's no way of just copying it straight across, so im re-creating the whole thing in my own way. THIS IS WHERE I GET STUCK.. I want to copy the way you add a new record.. I created a 40 page user guide for my solution using the "Grab" screenshot feature new to OSX.(it creates .tiff files)the thing looks beautiful..until I open with a PC. Each of the 200 or so graphics displays, instead, "Quick Time and TIFF(LZW) decompressor are needed to see this picture" Please tell me I don't have to go in and convert all those gfx files to jpegs...there must be another way! I am in the midst of designing a specialized database of sorts ... Hi all, I'm using the "Invisible Layout Objects" technique to hide some of my objects. It basaically use a portal and hides the objects based on a relationship. My issue is that this technique is not working in Find mode. It displays all the objects that are suppose to be hidden. I'm wondering if someone has found a a fix or work-around for this issue I'm having. I believe I have a work-around but it would probably take much work Thanks!

OK, Panic over... I discovered that for some reason, while Fm accepted my wonky TO name yesterday, today it does not. I tried omitting all of my non-alphanumeric characters from the name and the merge fields worked again. I narrowed it down to a colon in the name...just a single colon, not a double colon, and I am NOT having this problem with other T/O's that STILL have the colon in the name. I'm going to pull them all out just to be sure. PHEW! ...and NO, FM gave no warning that I could find of this issue. As far as FM is concerned, the single colon is just fine. In fact, it's still fine just as long as you don't use merge fields as far as I can tell.

I am running 5.5. Is there a way to check for a particular value in a field. I am making a file which will be used for making Work Orders. I need to make it "User Friendly" because of the denseness of some of the users. Therefore, I am making a layout for each field that is required. I have a field called "Art Status" which has the options, "New," "Repeat," and "Change." I would like the button which sends the user to the next screen, send them to the "Art Due Date" field, only for two of the three possibilities. For some odd reason, I cannot see data when in Table or List View in one of my Tables. It can only be seen in Form view. Any ideas? You can see the scroll bar and see some activity is going on, but just can't see the data. I've adjusted the font size and still nothing is there...very weird. It is a large Table, All my others tables are a bit smaller and show up fine.

How can I produce a report in this sort of format where I have subsummaries for Contest, Year and Candidate: Contest 1 ......Year 1......Candidate 1 ......................Candidate 2 ......................Candidate 3 ......Year 2......Candidate 1 ......................Candidate 2 Contest 2 Etc. In other words, I'd like for the first candidate to appear on the same line as the year instead of beginning on a new line as is typical. I want to set a button up in my database that allows end users to return to the previous layout. For example, they may be viewing some information they have just searched for but want to quickly view another layout. I need to place a button on the second layout so that they can return (back button) to the previous layout. Much like the back button on a web page. I'd like to be able to print my newspaper articles in a two-column format. I know that there is a built-in provision for printing in two columns with the text flowing from column 1 to column 2, but I need for the columns to be "balanced." That is, I want the text in both columns to be approximately the same length. What I'm wanting to do is have some kind of windows management(FM windows, not the OS). I'm building a solution that takes advantage of the multiple windows feature that started with FM7. I'm wanting to do things like - remember last size/position for each window for each user, run script upon window exit, resize window based on screen resolution/zoom, position a new window based off an existing window's position etc... I'm putting together a db to create contracts in selling air-time (broadcasting). Each contract includes the air-time purchase (called "Flight"), the fee for the purchase, and calculations having to do with the breakdown of where the material is to be broadcast. I need a way to be able to list an identifier for each flight, and have relevant info (air-dates, number of broadcast sites, etc) about that flight be pulled from a related table. For repeating a field... i know that if you use the Last(field) it will repeat something. But is there a function that will clear a field if nothing is in it? So say on one layout you don't enter something and on another layout that keeps a history of that field, that it doesn't even show up on the layout because it is empty...? I am back for my second posting on FMForums--the last one went so well I can't stay away. I have two tables that track data of inventory used on a job. I am using two tables because the two projects bill very differently, and I want to add dif projects in the future. I use the same value list for descriptions of all inventory. Im confused on layouts with summary sections. Lets say I have a database with company and contacts tables. They are related through a companyid match key. So when I print a summary report where the layout is for the customer table, summary subsection shows company::CompanyName, the field in the subsummary is company::CompanyName as well, and in the body I have the related fields for contact::First contact::Last. I tried reversing it as well where the layout was showing records from contacts and that did not work too. Does anyone have an example? Forgive me for not knowing the exact name of the part of filemaker on the left side of the form that shows the modes and record numbers, but is there anyway I can make a layout that does not show this? I'm making a reports menu which will basically be a 400 X 400 pixel window with a list of reports. It will open on top of the main form. It's soul purpose is to select a report, so there will be no records in it, thus no need to display record numbers or browse, preview and form views. Thanks in advance. Hopefully this makes sense.

I am trying to create a script that overlays a checked item in a field called Gap (Yes/No) if true then it checks another field called GapFee which contains a check box of 40% or 50%. If 40% then it goes to a calculated field that is based on a distance travelled. It would take the distance traveled (i.e. 20 miles and then plug it into the calculation (DistanceActual - 15) / 5) * 2 + 5). This formula is either multiplied by 40%. The result of this calculation is the fee a customer pays, which is displayed in another field FeeActual. If the GapFee was checked as 50% then it would loop back to the formula and multiply it by 50% :

My solution is designed for Windows. I was assured we would not be using Macs on it. Of course, I didn't totally believe it but it made my job simpler. We use script-fired popup menus which works wonderfully. We now have a new Sales Rep working remotely. He will be signing in to GoToMyPC and opening a licensed copy on a system only he will use. He will be clicking the 'Opener' FM file on the desktop. Two questions please: 1) Is there a problem opening FileMaker this way? I realize it will be a bit slower but this is just a temporary thing until we get him set up. 2) He uses a Mac. How will my popup menus fire for him? As if he's a Mac (thus bre…

Hi All, Blink Blink, I guess I havent stopped by for a while, love the new digs! So, a new client of mine is requesting that they be able to print out invoices with 1-5 optional attachments. These would be, a personalized letter, a standard sales policy form, a rental agreement, a credit card form, etc.. basically, all of them generic templates (except the letter which could be one of any number of letters associated with the specific invoice). HELP!!! Whats up everyone. I'm trying to set up a file here. I have two layouts. One is a log to log material into, the other is a history of the logs for different vendors. Anways, I can't seem to figure out how to get certain fields to show up on my history log only if they have text in them. If nothing is entered, I don't want them showing up. How do I do this? I use a print-layout with a lot of fields (container with most of the time word-content) and I use the sliding possibility as "sliding up based on all above" + "also reduce the enclosing part". However, if this sliding happens, fields that are big are divided by the page break. I don't want this, because many times I have tables in some fields or pictures and breaking it in two over two pages doesn't look nice for a print-out. How can I use the sliding function without having the page break problem?

We need to generate a report where some of the fields of select records need to appear bold and italic. The rest of the records need to keep the regular format. Hi, I have to add a proforma page onto our existing database. It needs to link from our contact layout, to this new page. The tricky bit is the data. I want it to fill in certain parts of the form from the data on the contacts page, and to leave certain parts empty. Users should then be able to fill in the remaining data, print and then save it. I'm just not getting anywhere with having the proforma page pick up the data, allow the new data to be added and then saved all at once, its so far been either one or the other. I have some fields in my layouts that somehow were left at a default white color - while most of my others, I changed with the Fill Color (a Custom Color, I think) to the color of the background I created. Here's the mystery: I now want to change the "straggler" fields to the Fill Color of the others. Seems simple - just right-click on a correctly colored field - determine the color and make the stranglers match. In table view, the field names become headers and are displayed horizontally across the page. The individual records are displayed as horizontal rows below the field names. I would like to reverse this orientation such that the field names are arrayed vertically in a column and the records show up in columns to the right of the field name. In MS Excel this is called transposing. Is something like this possible in FM8 Advanced? Thanks, Jarvis

hey everybody, i'm trying to create something simple that i know you all probably know how to do in a snap. i need a way to track how much time someone is spending doing certain tasks each week. what i envision is a simple table with 3 columns: date, time, and notes. But i obviously don't want to create a different field for each "cell" in this simple "table." How can i do this without creating a different table occurrence to track this information? or do i have to? thanks

I’ve having trouble getting graphics to show up in FMP without some sort of a square, white background. The files I’m being sent from the client are in .ai format (Adobe Illustrator.) I can make them into most any other format file (TIF, JPG, GIF etc) with kinds of options using Photoshop Elements. What do I need so I can put them in a Container file and have them display on any given layout – and I can successfully fill in their background color? Here's what I'm trying to do. There may be an easy way to do this, I just can't rap my head around it. Here goes. I have two tables in one file. With a relationship setup as follows. The primary table is set up to allow the user to create new records which signify groups. So with each new group you create a record. The new record only has two fields. Group # and Version. Both of those are user enterable. The file that holds all the records with all the info are in another table. A drop-down list which has a value list with about 20 values takes several seconds to drop down. I've read on the FM site that this can be caused by having multiple windows and/or open files. In this case, there are between 5 and 6 windows. And around 8 files. I've followed the separation model so the UI is in a single file and there are 7 data files. I cannot reduce the number of windows without hurting functionality ... ditto the files ... Has anyone been able to improve the performance of drop-down lists? I have an application that prints a rather large report. The customer is insisting that they have the option to print some portions, but not others. Does anyone have some insight on how this could be done? Example: Report could contain the following topics: Topic A Topic B Topic C Topic D Topic E Topic F Topic G Mind you, I jump through a number of hoops to create some of those topics – they are not just straight print offs of fields. Good day, I am a Newbie to FM. I have a text field that will contain no more than 50 words and an image in another field. Hey everyone, I need to issue a report that will have several summaries on the same page. they don't take up that much space, since they are just totals. and they want them all to be in the same report (and script) example: Topic 1 Total Patients Total Patients w/ Chronic disease Total Patients w/ Insurance --------- Topic 2 Count of Languages Spoken Count of Country of Origin --------- Topic 3 etc. these can't be grouped with each other because they are separate statistics. I don't mind the added feature, although you do have to have a border on the right side of the field for the icon to show up in browse mode - without clicking on it It would be nice to see the icon without the need for the border - you can have a hairline around the field, but the calander then gets a thick border . . .

I use FM7 under windows. When a script ( that is triggerd by a barcode-scanner) ends, my application is not active anymore. I have a grey titlebar in stead of a blue one. It's not what I want because the application is meant to run whitout keyboard or mouse (only barcode-scanner & touchscreen). I can't find a scriptstep to activate the application, they all seam to be made for the windows, layouts, fields but not for the application it self. Any suggestions? thanks a lot Koen

Is it possible to set a zoom level for each layout in a file? I have a "home" page that needs to stay at 100. When I switch to another layout zoom in to 150 it keeps everything the same. I guess I could set my "home" button to do that. Is there an easier way?

I have a layout based on a Donor table which has a field Entity for designating the type of donor (person or business). If Entity for a given record is Person, I need a few other fields (Employer and Occupation, for example) that are not needed when the donor is a business. If I could show these extra person-related fields only when the entity is Person, that would make the layout less confusing. But how can I do this? If there's a better way to approach this problem, I'd be open to that also. I tried to use the new tab panel but wasn't happy with the results because many of the fields are common to both person and business. And that seemed confusing. Thank…

Hi, I'm trying to print a quote and seem to be having difficulties as certain parts of the layout are missing when I go into 'Preview Mode' although they show up in Browse Mode. I have 2 tables tbl_quote and tble__quote_line_items, the layout being based on the latter. The layout has a subsummary part (leading) sorted by tble_quote_line_items::Quote No - this appears in browse but not in Preview. Similarly, the subsummary part (trailing) which includes the line item total does not show up either. I have tried "sorting' manually but to no avail. Have I got the wrong end of the stick somewhere? Perhaps I am using the wrong parts or something?…

I have two databases, one for testing and one is the real thing. I've created a list view in the test db and it works perfectly. But creating the list view layout in the "real" db in exactly the same way as in the "test" db all I get is a blank white screen. Absolutely nothing is shown in Preview mode. When I switch to Browse mode the list view is revealed but with no records. I can't figure what, if anything, I've done differently. I've redone this "List" view a couple of times with the same result in the "real" db. But again it works perfectly in the "test" db. Veronica

I am a recent Mac convert. My primary position at work is buiding, maintaining, and using a MS SQL database with an Access front-end. I don't want to have to use a Windows box anymore so I am trying to switch over to Filemaker. I can't seem to find anything about UNION queries in Filemaker on the web anywhere. Just a small problem, im trying to make an invoice (report). Two tables, related by a 'client ID'. One table contains the invoice items and the other the clients. When generating an invoice for a client im a bit confused as to how to only show the info for that client in the report, ive tried using a sub summary part by client ID, and then using related values from invoice, but although it shows the correct information it only shows one record, anybody want to point me in the right direction please? I'm migrating an FM6 application to FM7. After I carefully created three categories of layouts: 1) for entering Find requests, 2) for viewing data (no updates permitted) and 3) for full updating, the user has now informed me that they used to copy/paste data between layouts. Having defined fields in the viewing (readonly) layouts to not be used for Finding or Browsing, it does not appear to be possible to copy text from the fields. Is there a (hopefully simple) solution to this? (I know that earlier suggestions to other questions were to set up all updates using global fields and only when the data was clean move the data to the actual fields ... but …

I want to use a script to open a different layout in a new window, and I want to define the layout using a script parameter. I can't seem to get it to work. If I do the following: New Window Go to Layout(Layoutname) It works fine. If I simply want to go to a new layout using a script parameter, I can do: Go to Layout(Get(ScriptParameter)) But, if I do: New Window Go to Layout(Get(ScriptParameter)) It doesn't switch the new window to the different layout. Obviously, I'd like to be able to use a script parameter so I don't have to write a new script for every window I want to open. Anybody have any ideas about what …

Something changed in the 'Set Tab Order' layout feature with FM7. When I went to assign a new tab order on a layout, I used to be able to click anywhere on the area of the field, using FM6. Now with 7, I've got to click on the arrow to assign a number to it. Does anyone know if this was changed on purpose, or is there some super-secret setting that I need to apply in order to be able to click on the field, like I'm used to and prefer? Thanks!

Newbie-ish Question: I've noticed that when I first create a button - first I'm prompted to with the "Specify Button" window - then the cursor defaults to input the text for the button. Fine. BUT when I go to edit the text in the button, selecting the button in Layout mode brings you to the "Specify Button" window - but I can't seem to get to back to edit the button text easily. My gut says there must be a remarkably simple answer to this one. -Mark

I'm developing an application and I've decided that I don't want the users to have access to the Status Area - I'm afraid they can get into too much "trouble." I have a few questions related to this: 1) How do I deactivate the Status Area in my layouts? 2) Alternatively: Is there a way to give limited access to the Status Area - so users can't get into say, Layout Mode or Preview Mode? 2) I'm working on a generic search routine which will allow users to search any of the 10 or so tables they can access. Hi, I am not sure if I am asking my question in the right section. I have designed an html document similar to a layout in my FileMaker Pro application so that I can distribute it electronically with dynamic data from my application. The problem is printing the html document. I want to add code inside the html document such that the document should print correctly with all the alignment. I'd like to have a layout where selecting an element in a popup list causes a portal to repopulate. I'd have no problem with this in an event driven UI, but FMP's layouts aren't event driven. Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble trying to build a particular report. Perhaps this will seem like a really simple problem to you FM wizards, but I'd definitely appreciate any help you can offer. I have a “main” record layout and users can click on a button which calls a script to open a smaller window to make certain selections from another layout. (See the attached PDF.) I then have a button in the smaller window that is labeled "Continue" that does a "Resume Script.” If someone uses the button, all works fine. Ok, I'm about to pull out my hair trying to figure out how to do this. It *should* be simple, but I'm just not getting it. Is there a way to format a calculation field to have leading zero's? For example, if the number is "7", I'd like to see it show up as "07" in the field. If the number is "12", it just shows up as "12". All the fields that are part of the calculation are numbers.
