I put myself down as an intermediate skilled FileMaker but I am for sure in the newbie funk. Despite some time with Filemaker and a deep history with scripting in a number of other apps FileMaker always manges to stump me. The hardest area for me to understand is the way scripts work with the interface objects. I bought a very good book from Que publishers, "Using FileMaker 7" but it is somewhat advanced for me in a lot of areas. I am cleaning up a FM 7 database with 50 + layouts. I need to delete all layouts except one. I am now deleting one layout at a time from the layout-delete layout menu. This is pretty repetitive and time consuming. Is there a way to select and delete a bunch of layouts at once? I will be doing this same thing one another file soon, so if theres a shortcut it would help me out. thankx

Hi First i have to tell you i'm an absolute newbie I'm wanting to start a database of my students so i also want a layout where i can print out the grades of my classes. I manage to do that layout but i'm wanting to be able to print the grades of the different classes. So that i can have a print out of class VII with all the students of that class and there grades. Hey, I've been developing a rather large soultion entirely on mac in FM7 with but the goal is for it to be used on both PC and Mac. When i was finished on my mac a took the solution to a PC and everything worked excpeted for the graphics, they where all of. Text wouldn't fit on buttons and in fields and so on. So i fixed it. Then i took the PC-file to the pc and network where it should be in use. Here again all the text where changed this time it even looked like an other font than the original one (Helvetica). Plus that some scripts didn't work but this I have not looked further into yet. For exampel it seemed like when i had used Get ( LastMessageChoice ) num…

Is this right? I've done a bit of a search in the forums and have come to a rather "shocking" conclusion that it can't be done!! I have created my layout for 800x600 rez (at clients request) only to realize it looks like crapp on his new 15" flat screen LCD monitor. The text looks really fuzzy, but graphics better . If he changes his rez to 1024x768 and I use fm's zoom, text looks crisp and clear. But I can't seem to work out a way to zoom into the correct percentage. Apart from the standard zoom options, can you zoom in at 1% increments? If not, can it be done in ver7.??

I am baffled by this. I place a vertical line, solid colour 3 pixels wide on my layout at the right hand side, almost full height of the visible screen. In Browse mode it is invisible. It is definitely on the top layer and there are no portals or other objects near to it. I now move the line 20 or 30 pixels at a time to the left when it reaches about 400 pixels from the left side it becomes visible. From now there is no problem, I can put it back to the right side of the screen and it is still visible. This behaviour is repeatable on this layout but it does not occur on others (I haven't checked them all). I assumed there was some sort of corruption of the layout so I mad…

The user gets to the layout by clicking a button on the main menu. It works fine. BUT, how does the user get back? I cannot find a way to put a button on the layout. I have an image and a menu on the left hand side of the List View Layout. If I insert this menu into the layout, the body of the layout becomes large and the list becomes spaced apart and my menu repeats as well. Is there a way to insert a menu or other layout objects into the list layout without adjust the spacing between records??

I am trying to size a window that pops open with certain scripts, but I want that window to be very small. I try to resize it in layout mode but can't get it smaller than a certain amount. Is there a setting somewhere to allow windows to be smaller than a certain size? Thanks for the help

It used to be so easy, hold down the 'alt'-key click on a field in layout view and drag. Et Voilà, I had a new field the way I wanted it to be. Gone in version 7? Or should I use another keyboard combination? Copy/paste is slow and always dragging a field from the field button is really slow too when you're used to the old way of adding a new field to your layout. Is there any way to configure a default field size for a given field, such that whenever I place the field in a new layout it defaults to the size I want, instead of the size FileMaker wants? That would save a lot of time, if I didn't have to manually resize thirty different fields to exact lengths every time I created a new layout. Thanks!

I have a layout which contains field with 16 repetitions. I want to be able to scroll in the fields. Even though I can select "include vertical scroll bar" no scroll bar appears. Is this a known defect/limitation or am I doing something wrong?

I have defined some fields as only enter in Find mode because I want to be able to prevent the user from entering data into the fields. But having done this, scrolling does not appear to work. Can I get scrolling to work and also prevent data entry?

I'm wondering if I am taking the wrong overall approach here. The story: The system has three main objects (client, artist and event.) They want to be able to switch to finding on any of these objects while they are in the middle of updating an object. They also want to have advanced validation which I have implemented via scripts. Trying to figure out: I have a database with 4 files. Two are information files that are accessed for two or three fields; one is a line items file and the last is the one that ties them all together (invoicing). My question is, where to design the print layout? If I create it in the last file, it has to be a portal of the line items, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to print over multiple pages. When it comes time to print an invoice, how is it done? Also, is there a way to make the first page in one layout (like with logo and mailing window layout) and make the rest of the pages just of the line items info?

I got a problem with people entering Carriage returns in text fields. Like in an e-mail field, someone presses [enter] but it creates a 2nd line, so they re-enter the e-mail address. Now when I do an export it has: [email protected][][email protected] (the [] is a box) Sifting through 2000 e-mails looking for this is tedious. Maybe I just can't find a reference to it, but I have a columnar list layout with leading part based upon product. There is no body; only Product and summaries. Of course it needs to sort first by Product. I then select 'sort by summary field' and select Total Sales. But it won't allow me to sort descending!!! Either I'm blind or missing something very basic here or ... ? Sales Manager wants to see all Dollar summaries descending and I couldn't even do it! I'll be switching to a different process soon but until then, he needs these regular reports. Help please!! LaRetta

Can anyone help? I'm inserting a merged number field into a letter and its taking the formatting of "format as decimal". How can I change this option as i can't bring up the menu as I would on a field i.e. right click/number format. Additionally, how do I format the today's date i.e. // ? Anyway, the solution looks fairly nice on the Mac (I design on a Mac), but I'm having problems with screen flashing on Windows. I've included a stripped-down version of a typical layout. The example file just has tabs that allow you to switch among a few layouts. I am making extensive use of container fields to colorize a record based on certain condtions. In MS Excel you have an option to AUTOFIT selection. In this option, the row or column would automatically size itself to accommodate the largest item in the column or row. Is there a way to do something like this in a columnar-type layout? Specifically, I would like to be able to match the height & alignment of my container field with that of the row size. I can affect the size of my container field via the pixel size dialog box but I cannot find a similar dialog box (or method) to control the size of my row. Any ideas? Jarvis

A customer bought FM7 on the understanding that it would enable them to go from an active layout (creating a new record) and open another layout to browse some data ... without having to complete the data entry. I haven't seen anything which describes this ... does anyone know IFF this is possible ... and if so how?

When in layout mode, is it possible (and if so, where) to hide/unhide the lines that mark the page margin (vertical and horizontal "squiggly" lines)? I know that in layout setup, I can change their placement on the page, but I do not know where to go to hide/unhide them??? I am trying to puzzle out how to create a "due date/renewal reminder" setup where the user can find out which records are due/unpaid etc., preferably using a button/script setup I have an auto-created field 'created' and another calulated field 'due date'. The calculation is "Date(Month(Created) + 12; Day(Created); Year(Created))", which I think gives me the first renewal date for one year ahead. But this of course has a logic flaw, i.e. what happens years 2/3/4 etc. Any suggestions or examples would be appreciated. Hope this is the right forum.

I have a layout, "goal", that contains a set of information....maybe 20 fields. For each record, though, the number of times I need that layout varies. For example, record 1 may have 4 goals and record 6 may have 15 goals. Is there a way to create the "goal" layout and add it to a record as needed? Alternately, is there a way to construct the fields so that there are x repetitions, but only one repetition (times 20 fields) prints per page? Thanks, Rick

I wish to put in the header of my form a "Page x of y Pages" counter. In FM5, I had to write a script to go to preview mode, count the pages and insert that number into the "y" page number. I thought I heard that this was simplified in FM7. Has it and how is it done?

My user wants to be able to tab to a pop-up menu field and also he wants this to be the first tab field. Is this possible? I think that a pop-up list field would work but he wants a menu ... In the Photo Catalog Template database there is a Thumbnail view where you can click on an image and be taken to the same image in Browse mode. Works very well! My problem is I can't figure out how it works. Working through the Scripts it appears to work as follows. 1) a Label Layout is used to configure a field grid 3 x 5. 2) a thumbnail LAyout displays the contents of the Label Layout as seen in preview mode. 3) You click on one of the 15 displayed images and by so doing Perforn one of 15 scripts named "GO TO Record n" where n is the image position. In other words, I would like to I want to have two or more "starting points" for portals on each layout. Is this possible? I have a file with quite a few layouts - they will typically be viewed in order. I want to create a prev and next button - the prev button does a go to previous layout and the next button does a go to next layout - what is the easiest way to do this with scripting?

Has anybody else experienced alignment problems where on various records the alignment of a field jumps ahead a space, randomly, in one record and not the other? This file was converted from FMP6. It had these problems in FMP6 and we were hoping FMP7 and an update would fix it but it didn't - comments, suggestions, what on earth? I'll attach a screenshot of two consecutive records. I have created a portal based on a date_calc for month and year; for example, July 2005 reads as 72005 in "sales records" and a "montly sales listings" each with their respective tables. I have a table with 3 layouts. In 2 layouts, I have a merge field in the header section to display the value of a particular field. The value is the same for all the records in the table. In layout A the merge field data appears correctly; in layout B, nothing displays in Browse/Print mode and the error code -44719999999 is displayed when I show sample data in layout mode. The FMP file I created is designed to create a set of forms for particular events, and with each new event I duplicate the file from the previous event to make changes. Hi I have an FM database of 400 items containing codes + descriptions to print out onto labels. I have set up layouts of the 2 x Avery labels required. I have set a field containing a size code so I can search for all the items with large and all the items with small labels. Now I want to print them but some items I want 50 labels off, some I only want 6 off. Anyone any idea how I set this up so each item has a code, a description, a label size and a number of labels reqired. I hit print and out they come. It's all there apart from the printing problem. If I can't solve it I'm going to waste an awful lot of sheets of labels. Regards GBM

I have two fields in my database which are calculation fields (First Name -calculated as the first word of a field called First Names, and Sign Off - calculated as a concatenation of ManagersName, paragraph mark and Job Title). I want to incorporate these into a letter, but using Merge Fields (CTRL-M) I get First Name appearing twice (as in PatriciaPatricia, though it is fine on another layout when displayed as an ordinary field) and the Sign Off only gives the first line,. not the paragraph and second line of display (though again this displays perfectly when displayed as a conventional field). I think I may have found something Filemaker just cannot do. Perhaps I need to change the way I'm approaching this to get what I want. Have two tables: Invoices and InvoiceLines. InvoiceLines contains individual records for each line item in an invoice. It is related to Invoices by a unique InvoiceID field. I have a series of buttons that pull up different subsets of the same data. If a button would query a null set, I want its color to be gray-out. Is this possible?

How to put this most simply....hmm.... I have a in consecutive order right next to each other, a text object "CD," a field "A###" and a field "A/B." The "CD" and field "A###" are always full, but the last field "A/B" is full only when there are two CDs. My problem is with how to keep it centered on the layout with AND without the occasional "A/B" field. Hello there. I'm stumped with a little bug that I can't seem to resolve. Here it is: In a Standard Form Layout, I am using a lot of justified text (not in a field, just text on the layout) and some Merged Fields. In Layout Mode, the text is fine and within the boundaries. But in a few lines in Browse and Preview Modes, the right side of the last letter is incomplete.. Picture this: what should be the letter 'O' comes out looking like a 'C' instead. To top it off, it also prints that way. So, text wanders off the print margins in Browse and Preview Modes, as well as on the printed page. Has anybody bumped into this problem before? Hello, I am working on a solution with a lot of images in the layout. This is just to make a pleasing interface, all printing is done on seperate layouts, no images. . Anyway, my question is: What is the most optimal way to use images? Obviously, keeping the images as small as possible is one way, but beyond that - is it more efficient to import directly into the layout or store via reference? If an image is copied, does it just load the image once and display it twice (like on a webpage) or does it actually load it twice? I'd like to supplement the Status area of a layout with an alphabetized list of all the records - in this case, the people in our mailing list. Clicking on a name would take the user to the related record. Here's my situation: I have a colon as a text object (not a field) between two text fields. If there is not text in the two fields on either side of the colon, I do not want the colon to print - is it possible to write a script or somehow make it so that the colon will not print if there is no text in a surrounding field? I am having an issue creating a checkbox value list in FM Pro 7. Well, it's not really an issue creating the checkbox list, is how limited it seems to be as far as display options. Unless I select a dark blue, dark green, or black background, I cannot see which option is checked with the light yellow background I have for my layout. I don't want to change the layout colors because I already have several layouts with the same format and the color represent the organization I am doing this for. I'm having trouble creating a layout for what I need to model: each CUSTOMER has any number of ORDER, and each ORDER has any number of ITEM, and each ITEM has any number of CONFIGURATION. Here's a picture if that doesn't make sense: What I would like is to have a layout that shows the customer name & info (from CUSTOMER), along with any orders they have (from ORDER). Then, for each order, all the items in that order (from ITEM), and for each item, all the configurations it could have (from CONFIGURATION). I am developing a 'Job Tracking System' for a print department. We number our jobs as follows MMYY.001..002..003, etc. For example the first job recorded in July 2005, would have the job number '0705.001' Corresponding folders on our server are named likewise. Currently I have a 'Serial' counter that just starts at, for example, 0705.001. This works fine but I have to update it at the start of each new month. Is there a way to create a 'Serial' counter that will extract the MMYY so I don't have to update this every month? Regards, Johnny

Okay, i remember that this was a problem in earlier versions, but hoped it would be fixed by now. Simple layout with text boxes as field labels aligned to the left, with accompanying fields to the right. All are set to slide up and reduce size of enclosing parts. Now, the layout goes over one page long. Everything works fine until the text boxes after the first page. In preview mode, these text boxes disappear completely, although the fields next to them slide just fine. Gone. Just gone. I've tried every different way to set up the body part, to no avail. However, when I create a calculation field using the aggregate SUM function and the related field I only get the value from the first record in the list. In Kiosk mode, under Windows XP, when I give the user a text block to fill out, Cntl-C & Cntl-V (copy/paste) and similar keys are not recognized, and instead generate invalid characters. Is this another "limitation" of Kiosk mode? (I am targeting Dacons Menu Control for a future release, but I'm about to ship this version.) Thanks, Rick

Question. I am planning on purchasing FMP7, but I had a question first. Does it come with Avery label templates I really need to know this b4 I purchase it. I downloaded the trial version and it did not come with it so I'm not sure if I will purchase it if it does not work with it. I need the avery template for the business cards (5371, 5372, 5376, 5376, etc). If it does not come with it, I need someone to tell me what the dimensions are for the custom label for the business cards (for name tags)... THANK YOU VERY MUCH! is there a way to make a field that records the creation date of a record and then never changes--so that i can have a creation date AND a modification date in separate fields?

I'm using Open URL, and the URL specifies an anchor within the HTML page. This is of the form "file.htm#anchorname". It seems that when this is passed to the browser, the anchor is missing from the URL. Any idea why? Thanks, Rick

Hi everyone, I have an inventory DB that has a part table, an Entry table and an Entry Line item table. The entry table has a portal into the line item table to enter purchase orders or invoices (parts coming in and going out). I have a layout in the line item table that sums up all the additions and subtractions in a sub summary layout that shows each part once and how many are in stock. What I want is to be able to show the user this information in browse mode. Is there a way to display only 1 line item of a part with a sum quantity without being in preview mode. Do I need another table and if so how do I display records without having to create new ones? Does this…

If a layout element will not show up in preview mode, does that mean that it will not be printed if I print the layout? Right now I have a portal that displays the proper data in browse mode but does not show up in preview mode. Edit: I also have some lookup fields that are showing up as "?" in preview mode, but work correctly in browse mode. I can't test print ATM.

I would like to create a layout with the detail (body records) numbered sequentially starting from #1 on each page. There is a sub-summary which causes the page breaks. What I would like is for page one to display records numbered 1 - x, page two to display reords numbered 1 - y, etc. Unfortunately, with the @@ attribute, page one displays 1 - x and page two displays x+1 to y. I am developing a database for my wife, who is a therapist. She keeps billing information, insurance information and daily notes. I made a relational database with one table the insurance information, one table the billing information,and one table the daily notes. I have the database done, except for on point. She needs to keep two sets of notes for each appointment. One set is her daily notes and these can be asked for by the legal system. The second set are private notes that consist of her thoughts about the therapy and these cannot be asked for by the legal system. I am currently using layouts to print standard letters with replaceable fields. I was wondering if there is a way to export formatted text to a text file, or maybe even to some kind of format like word or word perfect?

Is there a way to put engraved fields in an alternating color portal? When I try, all the fields are the layout background color, even the ones in the alternate rows. I tried making the fields transparent, but then the engraving goes away...

I may be trying to do something that can't be done, but here goes: I'm building a calendar interface that lets users select a date from a pop-up calendar window. Each date is a button. When pressing a date on the calendar, its value should be captured. I have a layout of fields with Calculated results in them, arrayed like a calendar. hello all. i'm trying to do a report to show the latest date (or record) only for each product number. what i did was create a sub-summary based on the product number and tried to sort the date in descending order so that only the records by product number with the latest dates would show. but it's still showing the first records per product number. what gives? or do i have it all wrong? thanks guys.

OK - I am dumb. I can't seem to create an envelope where I have sliding fields. My fields are text, (NameFirst, NameLast) and I have selected them and gone to Sliding Objects slide left. Nothing - nada. Not in printing; not in Preview not in my life. WHAT am I doing wrong? It seems that this is such a simple function that there is little discussion on it. So it must be me. Hello, I am working on a solution with a lot of images in the layout. This is just to make a pleasing interface, all printing is done on seperate layouts, no images. . Anyway, my question is: What is the most optimal way to use images? Obviously, keeping the images as small as possible is one way, but beyond that - is it more efficient to import directly into the layout or store via reference? If an image is copied, does it just load the image once and display it twice (like on a webpage) or does it actually load it twice? Is it more efficient to have one larger picture or many small pictures? Also, I think I might have found a way to make high q…

I've created a fairly in-depth database that requires us to import emails into it. I have created a script that pastes the entire email into a field. (WITHOUT styles of course) Then the rest of the script breaks the email apart and uses set field functions to put it into the appropriate fields. My problem lies in that when the information is placed into the fields they have a formatting of 12pt Helvetica, etc. I need NO formatting so that this can be changed within the layout. I understand the entered formatting takes precedence over layout formatting. Any suggestions??

Hi I have a relation which is a one to many. I have Projects and Tasks I have created a report which shows the Project in the header and all the tasks on the second page. i scripted a find Tasks , which searches on the ID in the Tasks table. Worked good in Browse mode, but in Preview mode the first Task disappears. so if i have 4 Tasks in Preview, say Task 1, Task 2, Task 3, Task 4 ; when I look at it in Preview mode, I see only Task 2, Task 3, Task 4 - Task 1 is nowhere to be seen. I want to create a report. that has several sub-summaries that have no relation to each other. Is there an easy way to draw a dotted line in FM7? I am trying to draw in various lines where our customers with write in certain details, and there does not seem to be an option to have a dotted line, can this be true? I have tried using the patterns available, but the results have varied from having no line at all to having a line made up of 2 rows of dots, can anyone help me?

I have come across a problem that Filemaker support have aknowledged to be a bug. If you have large blocks of text (mine are all max. one page long) with merged fields and you justify the text left and right (block), when printing FMP7 leaves out random pieces of text. This does not happen when text is justified left only. I have been in touch with FM support and they said that this can occur with some fonts. I'm using Times New Roman and have tried other fonts that give the same result. The only font I have tried that does not have this problem is Courier. I have has to go through dozens of layouts and reformat. I also get a strange thing when leaving the block of text, …
