I hope I'm in the right section... I have a list of 50-100 thousand words. I want to strip out all words found in the dictionary. Is it possible to somehow load a dictionary into FM and compare field data to the dictionary words? Then somehow pull out all records containing a word from the dictionary?

Hi all, I am looking to sort based on 3 fields for a movie application. Hi! Let's say I have a number value that is from 1 to 10. (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10) I would like to be able to find it when I search for 4 I know you can find number from 1 to 5 using find 1...5, but is there a way to do the inverse.... like, I would like to the field 1...10 when I search for 4.... Hi, I have been playing around with filemaker Pro 7 for a while, but would appreciate some help. I have spent hours and hours reading post here but found nothing that directly relates to what I wish to do. I have watched the video tutorial on this Rapid file searching (Zippscript) topic, several times however not understanding programming I am at a bit of a loss as to how to alter it to search more fields in the table. The title is a little misleading. I want to do a search for some records, and then the records I find, I want to do a search using the ID from each record found and then do something to that record that is found. I want to keep doing this until I have gone through each record found in my first search.... so. I have created a database with a table of 'pupils' and a table of 'payments' that pupils have made. I have defined a relationship between the tables. Hello again, Question of the day. Is it possible to search over numerous dbs and fields, a general piece of info that is not field specific. Example, I am looking for all Davids in 3 dbs in any of the fields in the any of the DBs. I also have value list check boxes that define certain qualities for David that correspond to each db i.e. thin, blond. I wish that the result be displayed in a new window and the results have either all or any of the above criteria. I presume this can be done, but for the moment, I can only get a result via one db and through specific fields that corespond, not via a single, global field. Thanks in advance

I am in a layout list in browse mode which shows 12 records from a find. I would like to place cursor over one of the 12 records making this the active record and then go to a new layout which would show only this record. I can get to the new layout and see this record but the record is one of 12 still in the found set. I would like to have this current record be the only found one. Can you somehow find on the active record?

Hello FM people, I have another luddite problem that I am sure is in the manual somewhere but I can't seem to find the solution (Fm is devilishly complicated). I have 2 databases that have similar info. I wish to search both the databases with via a 3rd DB using portals. I wish that the result of the search be opened in new windows via the original DBs. In short the 3rd DB is just a "collective serach window" on the 2 originals. I have managed to create portal links from both original DBs in the third using the "relationships" window. I have used Filemaker 5 but am new to Filemaker 8 and am apparently having a brain freeze. I have created a db from an excel spreadsheet and have discovered that there are quite a few blank records. Happy new year to all I am having a problem performing a find on a sales order number the number is made up of two alphas and some numberics ie R0612345H01 all our numbers begin with an alpha R and the letter where the H appears can differ. My search criteria Is *h however it will only find the result im looking for if the R is removed from the sales order number. is the * only looking at the first letter occurance? im at a loss as to how to go about this. any help would be great thanks

Hi ! I have a problem when finding records between two timestamps. I'm sure this question has been here before, but currently I am behind VERY slow internet connection here in Kabul and it takes time to browse previous postings. In my database there is always a timestamp in each record. There is also fields gStartDate, gStartTime, gEndDate and gEndTime. In a script you can set these values. Hello All, I have a checkbox field(global) with about 12 options in it. I want a user to be able to have some number of of the boxes checked and then be able to print all the records that are in the categories selected. I have setup a find to do this: The find is setup like this: Enter find mode Set Category = gCategory (the field where user has made their selection) Perform Find What is happening is that filemaker is trying to find records whose category is ALL the categories selected - of which there are none since each record only belongs to one category. Hi guys, Ok so i have a calculation field called imagedetails that looks at image using the getasText function and this is what is coming up for it. size:184,245 image:6028.jpg imagemac:/6028.jpg So what i want to do is do a search for images that have a bigger height than their width and visa versa. Ok, now that I have found thousand of different duplicates, is there a way get rid all but the latest record for each duplicate. For example: Found Records 7855 7855 7855 6854 6854 3397 3397 3397 etc.... In this example I would like to delete all EXCEPT for the last 7855, the last 6854, and the last 3397. I have a database that was updated from, ahem, FileMaker 4 to FileMaker 8. The upgrade seemed to go fine. However, one of my users has just encountered an odd behaviour in Find mode. There is a field that is set to display as a drop-down menu containing values from a Value List. She is trying to find all records that have a specific value in this particular field. When she does the Find, she gets the results that no records match the request. However, I *know* there are records that have the particular value in that field. I've created (as part of a larger database) a staff list which contains, amongst other thing, staff statistics (for sales purposes) and personal details. If a member of staff with low access privileges access the list, the can only view this data fi they are looking at themselves on the list. Those users wit high level access can view anyone's data. My problem is the mouse wheel scroll, because once i've restricted the user's view of these data pages to only theirs, they can still use the scroll wheel to view anyone elses' in the list. Anyone got any ideas how to disable this function or find a work-around?

Hi, i am using Find that is working perectly . The ersult is there... Only I have to display the result to a report - (summary Report) . I am using summary fields.. to display the calculation result. The file has more then 300,000 records. Every time when the user signs in the summary fields are "summarizing" long time.. Is there any other way of showing the result in a report? Ok, I have a really messed up database for a client, but the software program they use means I cannot change the relationships. There are two tables both use a pk that has multiples of itself in both tables. There is no way I can get around this either. I thought of creating another table and putting unique values from one of the id fields in it so I could reference the second id, but I am not sure how to go about getting unique fields from the other table without using sql, but I guess filemaker doesn't let you just use sql in the database without setting up an odbc connection to a database first. Hi all, been searching for the answer to this but cant find it. I think I've seen it in a demo somewhere though, but I can't remember where... In my customer database I would like to have a list layout with all companies in it. On that page I want a field where I can enter a part of a company name. I want the list to return only the companynames that contain the letters entered, in that order. If I add another letter, the list shall again only return companies with that combination of letters. Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me out with something that might be very elementary. I have a database of teachers each with unique IDs which I regularly delete and repopulate from data on our server. There are a couple of flags that I place on my end on FMP which I want to store on a related file with the IDs as the matching field. I pretty sure I've set up the relationship properly because I can click on the checkboxes on the main file and the related checkbox in the related file checks on. Incase you come across this problem... Took me a while before I was able to figure out why I couldn't use the search all records when using the Open Find/Replace script step. Simply unlock the Status Area [Hide] using the Show/Hide Status Area script. Set the Status Area back to Lock after the Search if needed. Hope this helps.

Is there a way that when a customer goes into find mode, they can view it in list view. So for example: Customer puts in Manufacturer in find mode, the customer wants to be able to see all manufacturers at one time, like a list view. But then say the customer now wants to see certain customers and there are many of them. So instead of clicking through the records they can look at it in a view mode. Do I need to have separate view modes or can one be used for whatever they are searching for? Hope this makes sense. Thank you.

I am trying to sort all records by first name, alphabetically. Some of the records have no first name entered, the field is blank, but I still want them to come up in the sort- but I want them last on the list. This seems like it should be simple but I can't figure it out. The only way I can get those with empty fields to the bottom of the list is to start my sort from Z rather than A. Hi all, Lets say there is a customer layout that has a portal that shows all records from a category table. This category table only has two fields, category_name and CategoryID. There is a third table that serves as a basic line items table. This table stores the CustomerID along with the CategoryID. I know this should be rather easy, but I am blanking on this. I want each person to be able to pull up, either by script or a calculated field, all the tasks due for a week beginning every Saturday and ending every Friday of the year. I'm trying to develop a script that finds specific records by date and then constrains the find to those where "Send eMail" field has been checked. I can find the dates thanks to Fenton and LaRetta, but now what seems to be a simple extension (or constrain) just won't work. I need to do a find based on the first letter only. The database is a book list with author, title, publisher, description, price. I want to be able to find authors beginning with A and export that set, then authors beginning with B, etc. When I do a find in the Author field using either A or A*, I get all authors with an A anywhere in the name. I am brand new to the FM world and have a question... the database has 16 groups of fields.. each group has a FirstName, LastName, Male/Female, Age, and Misc. field. How can I search by last name in general instead of typing in each of the 16 LastName fields to find the person I am looking for? I have a Dealer management system I am developing. I have a pop up box that lists contact names for manager, buyer, and installer. I have another form that allows the user to add all three of these, to a contacts table. I want to have only those people who are listed for a specific company (from the contacts table) show up in the pop up box on the Dealers screen, also sorting by installer, manager, and buyer depending on the popup box. As I build my database, i constantly run into problems that my brains can't figure out all alone. Anyway, I have a "last call" and "next call" field with buttons. The "last call" field inserts current date (fine..no problem. super easy to do). My "next call" field/button brings up custom dialog for "one day," "3 months" or "exact date." Regardless of that, I need to specify a calculation that if the next call equals a Saturday or Sunday, automatically inserts "Monday" into the next call field. Do you follow me? I hope so. I want to be able to find an exact match from a drop-down so, for example, when selecting "Home" from the drop-down in find mode, records for "Home improvement" aren't returned as well. However: - the find is done using a scripted button, not just entering by find mode manually - users can only select values from a drop-down list (so can't type in ==) - users don't have access to the status area - the file is accessed via IWP, so the drop-down stays in drop-down mode (you can't type in the field in find mode). How do I block a user to perform a find by hitting the enter key? I want them to only use the buttons for adding another find request, cancel, and perform find. I dont want the user to be able to hit enter and perform the find because I use s different layout for finds. If the user hits enter they would get the results on the wrong layout. I have tried to hide and lockout the status area but that did not stop the user from performing the find when they hit enter.

First, is there a way to do a straight out find for multiple records in the same field? A basic OR search. I have a field named "Jobs." It is a number field. I'm using FM 8 and need to change curly cue quotes to regular quotes for export to a html template. I can do this without a problem in the normal search and replace feature of FM however, I have not been able to do this through the script step search and replace. In the normal search and replace, you can type in the curly cue quotes and the regular quotes without quotes. However, in the script step, the program forces you to include what you are trying to find within quotes. The funny thing is individual apostrophies work correctly either way. Am I simply overlooking something or is this a bug? TIA

I have a fairly large number of fields (126) that I am importing. These fields belong in a variety of different tables within my application, therefore the only way to bring them all in at once is via a separate dedicated table. I then need to be able to move that data to the different fields where they really belong. The only problem is that some imported records may be partial duplicates of existing ones in my database (requiring an update of that data), while others may be new records. How can I begin to manually script this merge-purge procedure?

Hi Everybody, So here's my little problem, I have a database to organize a school guidance office. There are four guiance counsellors and 20 slots in which students can book appoitnments (4 counselors x 20 slot fields = 80 fields where appointments can go into. I know this is a bit of a weird system but it has worked amazingly to date (although the next version will have portals probably). I have created a simple database for the school nurse at my school. I have a layout named Data Entry with approx. 100 checkbox fields. The nurse checks the box for symptoms, etc. I also have a layout called report that shows a count of all fields from Data Entry. What I'd like to do is give her the ability to enter a date to get a daily report, then at the end of the month, get a monthly report for a specific month. I have one field in a table which has many different values (text) separated by commas and a space. In order to be able to search each value in that field seperately, I need to replace the comma and space with a carriage return. I have a table with FirstName, LastName, address fields, etc. On my layout, in addition to these fields, I have a pop-up populated by a value list of all the LastNames. Next to this pop-up I have a button labeled "GO". Once the user has chosen the last name from the pop-up for the record they want to navigate to, I would like the GO button to take them there. Is there some simple script that I can attach to the GO button to do this? I know how to attach a script to the button to go to next/go to previous, but how do I go to the record where "LastName" = the name the user has chosen from the pop-up? THANKS.

We have Get(RecordID)and it returns a unique value that never changes. But having stored it in a variable, I would like to safely find back to it from wherever I am, not having to care about much else. Hi My database is a project database, where a repeating field is used for all the individual parts of the project and the first field is basically used as the overall status, except when there are more than one part in the project. A project with only one part uses just the first field. A project with 10 parts uses 10 of the repeating fields. Where the first is used as overall status. Problem is when searching for open and closed projects. A project can have closed parts, but still be open, which means the first field can be open, while some or all of the parts are closed. Hello everyone this is the first time I am placing a post, I am having problems with a simple search between dates in one field, something which looks simple but not for me. This might be really obvious to some of you but I am really stumped - I have a found set, say 20 records from a DB of 100, and I am looking at them in List mode. I want to have a single button in the header or the footer that will populate a currently empty text field with a common piece of text in ALL of the found set. I cant use a global because I only want to populate the found set and so far I have only managed to populate one record at a time. Is there a way to populate ALL of the Found Set ONLY in one action?

some quick background... we have an inventory file with a list of tag numbers, its an old solution we are in the process of rewriting, but for now we use repeating fields to enter a new tag number to a coil if per say we cut part of it then return the rest of the material to stock... when this happens we assign a new tag number... If we try to do a search on anything but the original tag number we get no return results??? anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening or anyone encounter the same problems?? as always any comments are appreciated..thanks

In my first layout I have 6 records... Records 1-4 have the same conditional value I then do a find on this conditional value and (not surprisingly) get the first 4 records which appear in a related layout. However, if I'm in record 2 when I initiate the search, I get the same four records but my found set starts at record 1. Hi, The interface I've created for to search records includes three checkbox fields, each with several options, i.e. "red," "blue"... "large," "small," etc. When I select multiple options, I'd like the result to behave in an "or" fashion, rather than "and" -- what I mean is, if I check red and blue, I want all records returned that are red AND all records returned that are blue, not only the records that are both red and blue. Hi I am complete beginnner to all this but i have a database (probably set up wrong - but it works) it is to track my students and teachers. I have a calendar page which has a field for every day of the year which is related to the main database which holds all the student info. Hi everyone, In my older solution in 5.5 the user (via script)has a find screen one field of which is a drop down list of customer names. If a user selects 'Baxi' as a customer they find not only the records for 'Baxi' but also those for 'Baxi training' I thought I could get get round this by incuding the following line before the perform find script step Setfield(CustomerName;"=="and Customername) but that just gave me a consistent 'no records found' message Upon pausing the script before the perform find I found that this had set the CustomerName to 0 (nought) Can anybody guide me please? Hi all. I setup a relatively simple database for my brothers business. It is basically a list of items sold, some of which are bought from one person and sold to another. I set it up so he could search in the received from layout on a serial number, then duplicate the record, and clear out the name, address city state zip etc and leaving the equipment information intact so he can enter the new owner information. A lot of the equipment goes to and from a similar group of people. Hello all, I would like to be able to search for records using two fields as the criteria. I am trying to track employee time spent on specific jobs. Right now I have a table with all the fields I want, including an "employee" and "date" field. I am building an image catalog and I have an advanced search page which lists search fields that are related to images, such as image title, current location etc and search fields that are related to artists, such as artist name, artist date of birth etc. I have an image view layout and artist view layout with artist info a portal to the image table displaying all images by that artist. I want to make the advanced search page so that the default layout displayed after a search is the image view, unless any of the artist search fields are filled. I have a request to find records entered in the last week. There is a Date Entered field. The script I used is: enter find mode insert calculated result Status( CurrentDate) & "..." & (Status( CurrentDate) - 6) perform find My results were not found records but an error message that the date must be in the 1/1/2005 format. I have two files named 'company' and 'executives' which there is a one-to-many relationship based on an uniqued Company ID in company and Company ID in executives. Each executive has a key called Executive ID. I have a portal based on the relationship and want to find the name of the executives from the master file 'company'.
