There's probably an obvious way to do this... but I haven't found it, so I'll ask you guys. The retreat centre I work for has an existing Bookings database. I've created a new file that allows them to print off an invoice/receipt for each person that has retreated here or purchased something. The section that we keep has a number of fields to be filled in on how much people spent on our services and products. I then created a summary layout that can be printed off for our records that lists specific info from all the receipts in the found set. (Still with me?) This is a simple question, but I can't seem to get it to work. I just want my value lists to be in numeric order. The list is based upon an actual field, so it is dynamic. I have that field sorted in numeric order, but I can't understand why the value list that its based on won't sort in the same order. Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi All, I know that most likely someone already asked this question, but...You know you can create a value list to display values from a field in another file. When you set this up you specify the primary value to display, and you can select another field to display as well. Well sometimes this can mean a lot of data. Now when the user clicks on the field and the value list drops down, sometimes it is not wide enough to show all the data. Is there a way to widen the value list? Thanks in advance.

I'm a newbie so be kind! I recently found a solution to a problem which works though it''s awkward. I was interested if anyone had a more elegant solution. Table A contains a huge list of widgets. One of the fields in this table is the "date" when the widget was made. Table B has a pull-down field where the user has to select one of the widgets from Table A. At first, I defined a simple value list to show the primary key of each entry in Table A, and assigned this to the pull-down field. I am trying to create a conditonal list dependent upon the value of a certain field. I have read the other topics in the thread and have not found one that seems to answer this question. Here is a better description of what i am going to attempt to do. I have 2 value list and two fields. hello, i hope this topic hasn't been covered yet, but i can't find a solution for my problem: i am a student and I have made a database. for a lot of text fields I use value lists like this: big (>10) normal (5-10) small (<5) when i try to find al the records with "small (<5)" there aren't any records found, while there are a lot of record like that. is there a problem with the "< "symbol in the values? the strange thing is that the values with ">" do return results. i don't understand what the problem could be, can anyone help me? thank you very much!

I have set up two files, "Items" and "Invoices". My Items file has a list of all the items we sell by category. I have a conditional value list set up in my Invoices file so that after I select a category from a pop-up menu only the items in that category show up for the next field's pop-up window. This works fine for the first row. In the invoices file I have the category, item, qty., unit price, and ext. amount fields set up as repeating fields (8 rows). I have no idea if this can be done? I'll try and explain it. I want to develop a value list based on a relationship with another file. Upon making my selection from that list, I want that information to filter another value list from a separate file/relationship. ie. To create an invoice, i need to select a customer and then the project. After selecting the customer, I don't want it to show all the projects. Hello, I am trying to setup a value list so there can be rolling Dates.. so..let's say we open the database on Monday the 16th, the options on the value list would be 16th,17th, 18th...etc.. then the next day, Monday the 16th dropped off and another day would be added to the tail end 17th,18th,19th ect.. Here's a problem: I am doing custom web publishing of a FMPRo v. 5.0 database. I have a value list that shows a teacher ID and as the second value the calculation of the teacher's lastname followed by first name. I created a value list that looks up values from a field in another file with no problems. I then used the results in that value list in a relationship and still had no problem. I then did EXACTLY the same thing with another file and I can only get 4 out of 150 results in my value list. I tried everything over and over thinking that I missed something, and still no resolution. Reason: This is a non-profit membership database, it generates a list of current board members by searching the database for the checked board member option, it then compiles the persons full name and places it into a Global field, it repeats this for all current board members. I may be over engineering this one, but I've been working on it for way too many hours and can't come up with a solution that works. The logic for this is sort of baffling, so bear with me... To start with, I have a list of Jobs/Projects. That's the last easy part. Each job has a Job [status] field. Actually, you don't need to. Just reduce the size of the radio button field until just the buttons show (hide the text for each button). Type the required text on the layout next to the field formatted any way you wish. -bd

I would like to validate a two field combination to ensure that no duplicates are allowed. For example, one field is a color and the second field is an object (i.e. Red balloons, Orange Hats). This is straight forward for one field however, I cannot find a way to accomplish this with multiple fields. We have an FMPro v4 database which has been in use for several years. We recently updated this database to prepare it for web access and in the process changed the value lists used in several fields. After updating the value list the records were then revised to supply field values from the new value list. One particular field uses a Check Box display for it's value list to permit simultaneous multiple entries. Unbeknownst to the end user performing this process, data from the old value list remained in this field with each record. I have a database where I've already entered data into a text field. I want to add a value list to that field so I don't have to type in the information, but some of the information I don't want on the value list. For instance, one of the fields uses the data 001, 002, 003 and so on that I entered in manually. I want the value list to be only 1, 2, 3, and so on. I have two fields, one uses radio buttons, the other check boxes. Problem is that the radio button and check box are extremely faint (in white)when browsed in FM5. They're fine on the web. I have a database that contains a bunch of unorganized info. I want to create a new file to get it better organized. I would like to know how to easily transfer the info back and forth. I would like to be able to enter an employee name into the new file and have it pick up all of the info in the record from the original DB. I should note that there are no value lists in the original. I noticed that when I create a value list based on fields from other files it gives me a nice alphabetized list. I wonder if there is a way to get that info out into a list of its own

I have two fields in my database, Item Number and Operation descritption which are listed in another related file. What I want to a achieve is, if you click on item number, a value list of all the item numbers comes up and once one is selected, the corresponding operation description is entered AND (and this is the part I can't do) when the operation desciption is clicked on, the list of operations pops up and the item number is automatically entered!! I can do one or the other but not both. The idea being that the user can look-up either the item number OR the description and the other corresponding variable is automatically entered. Is it possible to select a field entry from a value list and after this ONE selection the field does not allow any new entry. I want to use this selection in a primary key and this selection should not change anymore since this is used in related tables. Would appreciate any advice. Best regards.

Hi all, I have a popup list that is using values from a related field. I have two values showing up in the list - supplier number and the supplier name. The value that actually gets filled into the field when you make a choice is the supplier number. Here's my problem: I have the relationship that the lis is based on sorted by supplier name, but the popup list sorts by the customer number (which I assume is following alphabetical order). Hi, I am creating a DB with 3 tables. 1. Company addresses containing: Comp_ID 2. Categories containing: Cat_ID and Cat_Name 3. A link table containing Comp_ID and Cat_ID The reason for the 3rd table is because a single company be associated with more than one category, thus I have a many to many relationship. In my Company DB I want to be able to select and view the categories that company is associated with through a set of checkboxes. I have created two databases - one customer dbase, the other contact dbase. I have defined their relationship. On the contact dbase I would like to have the "company" field use the values in the Company dbase. I thought I did everything correctly by defining the relationship and defining the values. The company names do appear in a pop-up list, but I am unable to select one. If I try, the error message "This field cannot be modified until "Company" is given a valid value" appears. I have a list of two hundred tv markets with number of homes in each market. I wanted a pop-up menu to select the market name, and 200 in a list is too long, so I broke it down into 4 sections, 50 names each (A-C, D-J, etc.). I've set-up the portal, defined the relationships, but only the A-C pop-up will populate the the "homes" data field in the portal. In a "Vehicle Description" field I created a pop-up list of vehicle identification numbers and then enter amount of gallons in a "Gasoline Amount" field. When I click on the field the value list (which draws its values from another file) displays only 10 values, although there are 112 records in the source file. I have a value list, on clicking one of the items, the page refreshes. (on change command). On the refreshed page it displays the selected value as if it is the first possible selection, the value is then duplicute in the list. I want that is displays a V in front of the selected value on the correct position. like 3 from above. Anyone got any ideas?

I don;t think that you can. The standard scientiffic notation (from memory) is "E" so 1,000,000 is 1.0E6.

In 1st DB I would like to list several records in a related (2nd)DB, based on a field in that (2nd)DB that is a pop-up. Only the types corresponding to this brand should be showed. In the database are several cars of the same type. In the value list i only want to show each type Once! The user needs to be able to choose any number of the options. I then need these choices only to be printed on a separate layout. Possible? Are you just browsing the custom format file, or is it being pre-processed by Web Companion with a -View or other action tag? CDML tags have to be processed by WC before the data gets substituted.

Heres a little trick I just figured out that might help someone else. I was using 5 levels of global conditional menus to drill down to a specific product and grab that products description and price with a lookup. However, not all products need all five levels. So if you first select something with 5 levels then want to go back and change one of the menus in the middle of the series, the later popups still have data from the first selection even if you don't need it. This screws up your lookup calculation. I am getting crazy trying to figure out the following. I have a layout that includes 3 pop-up value lists (from a tab order standpoint they are 1 2 and 3). Those are the only fields on that layout. Whenever I select a value for the first field,the next field (as defined by the tab order) that also validates via a pop-up value list "expands" to display the different values. Looks like the pointer jumps to the next field which in turn displays the different possible values. I could avoid that by having regular fields "between" (from tab order standpoint) the fields that validates via a value list but I am pretty sure that there is another more elegant and simpler way …

I recently upgraded our systems to 5.0.3 and still cannot seem to get one simple function to work in FM. I need to set up heirarchical menus, also known as conitional menus. We have a database known as "products" it contains fields such as Manufacturer, model, description and price. The second database is "proposals". I am trying to set up (pardon me if I am not getting terminology correct) several different values in a pop-up list. I can define the value lists just fine by typing in all the text I need (over 255) for each value. Then when I attempt to view the field in "browse" and I click on it and chose a specific value, only 255 (approx.) characters of that value will be displayed. The remaining text for that value does not pop up. I can continue typing it in, but that defeats my purpose of having it pretyped and just choosing the paragraph I want displayed in the field. I'm not an expert, but have been using FM Pro for several years. I have a value list called Media, and within that the values are for ex., Chemical Engineering, Design News, etc. Would like to show a summary of how many records of each media, i.e., 12 Design News, 14 Chemical Engineering, etc. Any easy way to do this? I have two fields defined as 'Group' and 'Group Area'. Group is defined as a value list. What I am trying to achieve is that when a user makes a Group selection then depending on this selection a value list is displayed for Group Area. So there is a number of valulist that can be displayed for Group Area depending on the selection made in Group. (Hope this makes sense). I have a basic creative request database that has a status pulldown menu populated by a value list for each request. The value list does not have a "complete" entry because I've created a button to mark jobs complete and runs a script. The button marks the job complete and adds a complete time and date stamp in a job log. I'm very new to FM Pro version 5, so I apologize if this is an easy question (I just haven't figured it out yet!) I have a master list of students at my school (approx. 600 kids). Some kids have Goal Plans, some don't. Is there a way that when I do a Find for the kid, that the program can tell me how many Goal Plans are on file, and list them by date in a Pull-Down Menu, to allow me to select a plan and view it? Some kids may have more than one plan per year. Some kids may have one every year. Most kids have none. I have a value list defined; I'm sharing my database over the network using web security with edit enabled and no field restrictions on the value list in question. When a remote user edits the value field, a blank field shows on the remote screen even though the change appears on the master database. The only way the change ever becomes visible on the remote screen is for the value list to be clicked upon in the master database manually. Validation is selected rather than AutoEnter. I would like to know if there is any way to link a field containg keywords to a thesaurus (list of terms with synonyms and if possible multilingual). For example, I want the data base to understand that chair=armchair=chaise without having to enter the three terms each time. Hello all, I have a yes/no type of variable in FM Pro 5 that I want to use a radio button for. The trick is that I want the user to see the words 'Yes' and 'No' next to the buttons, but have FM actually store a 1 or 0 respectively if the user clicks 'Yes' or 'No'. Is this possible? Ron

Hi, i have a database containing the fields: company, name and phone. on the searchform i want to have a dropdownmenu containing all firms. That is no problem - i can use a valuelist from company. But, the second dropdownmenu should contain now a list of all name in the firm that is selected. I.E. show all names in the list where the firm = 'first selection'. OK you have all sent me the information and I finally got the dynamic value lists to show....NOW I want to have the user Edit/Addto these lists via the WEB. Can't seem to find info on how to do a simple edit. Jo Ann

I am designing a database. I am using multiple layouts and placing fields from one layout into another. My problem is that I created a checkbox value list in one layout. The information checked is "supposed" to appear in another layout(table format) as a single line of information containing only those values that were checked. I can't get it to work!! The info will appear, but it is listed in the field as one value per line (which is impossible to deal with in a one lined table). Is there any way I can format the second field to present the data consecutively? THANK YOU

I designed a find screen using radio buttons for 8 fields. If only 1 radio button is selected to perform the find, all 8 buttons are populated/displyed after the find is performed. Is there a way to display only the radio buttons that were chosen?

I have a list view of data collected on line. Users chose workshops by clicking checkboxes. I would like to have FMPro addup the checkboxes checked for each different value. Is this possible?

I have a field with checkboxes and 8 items in the value list. The problem is that when I "uncheck" a value, that value is still "visible" to a search, i.e., a search on that value returns the record, although the value is no longer checked. I've converted the field back to a standard field, the uncheck values do not appear... Any ideas would be much appreciated?

Is this possible? I have a set amount of unique values that I want to create a Value List from (These values are IP Addresses). Pretty straight forward you say ... a Custom Value List. I then want a Value List that contains only the IP Addresses used so far. Again you say ... Simple, use a Value List generated from the IP Address field. The point where I get confused is here ... I want the user, when assigning a record an IP address, to choose from a third Value List. Hey all, I'm in a bit of pinch where I am depending on a dynamically-generated value list to match a dynamically-generated valueID list. The problem is that FM writes out the text values in Alphabetical order and writes out the IDs in ascending order. I'm not sure this is the right area to post but here goes- I have a large database (1200) of Doctors which are attending our conference. Every year, they have just wiped the database and start all over again as the people register. Can I create a new database to suck the names & information out of my main database, like a pop-up list of names and get it to fill in the fields? I have no clue how to even start. Is there a calculation or script, which would find entries in a field which do not match a value list? In this case, the value list is being imposed after the file has been in use for several years. The "Category" field in the approximately 4,500 records contains all sorts of two-letter codes. I have created a value list and want to isolate records whose data does not match the list.

I having been a fmp user for awhile and now that I have upgraded to fmp 5 I have a question regarding showing a subset of values. I have a database with a field called product name that has dozens and dozens of values in it. I am wanting to have only partial lists show when a category is selected. I have tried setting up a joined relationship for the file and can not get it to work. All help will be appreciated.

I am creating a database that is meant to score some records with keywords once a collection of records have been scored I need to label the subset of records with a category name. I have set up a many to many relational database using a portal. When using a pull down list of established keywords the records show up in the portal. Once this sub set has een found I need to enter test in a field that would assign its value to the visible records. Is it possible to use a variable to get the value of the field and then insert this text into a field in another file?

Ok, so I can make checkboxes...it's fairly simple. I don't know if I've changed preferences or what, but now when I create a checkbox (make the value lists and everything)...the box appears, my text appears..but there are no checkboxes.. it doesn't give me any options to click the x. I've compared my new not-working checkboxes to other ones, and it seems everything is exactly alike. I am pretty new to FileMaker but learning fast. I have a database with 1 field which has a number of Records, at present around 150. In another database there is another field that when clicked brings up the 150 records in a scrolling list. This is fine. Hi, I've recently been introduced to FMP 4.1 and am having a problem with configuring a "find" layout. I have a group of 100 members who each sit on roughly 65 committees. I decided to cast one field with repeating values for the committees, and ideally would like to choose one of these committees from a value list, hit a find button, and go to a new layout that lists the committee's members. Actually I have managed to accomplish most of this, only I am now unable to display the committee that was searched on in the "Results" layout. Is there a way to make a field default to the first value in a value list when a new record is created? I want my value list to show NEW when a new record is created, unless the user specifies another value. I think this rules out auto-enter. Thanks for the advice!
