doesnt seem to matter what I do i can never see the remote hosts on my laptop. I can put the ethernet cable backinto my desktop and it works fine. I've checked the preferences and the network settings and they are identical. Any ideas Ideally I want to be able to use the airport connection but doesnt work either. thanks

  2. I work for a company and we have been traditionally using Mac hardware to host our FileMaker servers. We have hosted FileMaker 6 & 7 on various G4s & G5s. However we are now looking at purchasing FileMaker 8 . In order to cut costs we can purchase a pretty good dell poweredge for $1500 instead of an expensive Xserve. Would you say that FileMaker Server is better suited for Windows or Mac. This box will be mostly used on the internet by our clients so it will be exposed to the internet. Please only reply with good experiences, not the typical "Windows sucks" or "Mac rules" responses, I am going to use the arguments here to either agree with the decision …

  4. Is there a way to automatically save a clone of a served file? The backup schedule will not save the file as a clone, and when the file is live I cannot save it as a clone or otherwise. Any ideas? (This is for a client who is using Server 8 for Windows.)

  5. I'm also weighing my options in moving my company's databases and our elaborate online registration system from FMP 6 to 8, and it makes me nervous that there seem to be few developers using FM's XML/XSLT-based CWP. It's also frustrating that there's no way to get my hands on a trial version of the Server Advanced software to try it out. Do you think there's anything poorly implemented or unreliable with the XML/XSLT approach, or is it just that Lasso and PHP-based solutions have a less steep learning curve? I am not familiar with PHP, so I am tempted to go with Lasso, but software and hosting costs might be more, and I should probably learn PHP anyway. What do …

  6. When setting up File References, which is the best syntax to use? We have a file, call it “navigator.fp7” which opens the other files in this solution. The File References to those other files read, for example: “file:names.fp7;fmnet:/*.*/names.fp7.” Is the fmnet reference necessary? These files are to be hosted on either single user local machine, peer to peer, or FileMaker Server. Here is our problem: when using the file reference syntax “file:names.fp7;fmnet:/*.*/names.fp7,” and using FileMaker Pro 8.0.1 or 8.0.2 as a peer to peer host, or when using FileMaker Server 8.x as the host, other FileMaker Pro 8.x Macintosh clients take 15-20 minutes to open the sol…

  7. I'm learning networking as quickly as possible. I've been asking a lot of questions and I appreciate your patience with me. Before we purchased Server 7 Advanced, we were networked LAN (I think) or maybe peer-to-peer. On each workstation when system reboots, it requests Windows UserName and Password. So when I set up privilege sets in FM, I duplicated the identical UserName and Password. In this way, our opener would open the host file and FM would pre-fill same UserName. User then just typed their same password to access FM. It was simple for them. We are now properly served and I've been wondering how to fix this problem. It seemed low on my priority l…

Ok, I'm trying to set up a simple custom web form that will input its data into an existing FMP database. This used to be relatively simple, but now it seems to be escaping me. I've read the majority of documentation on the matter but seem to be running around in circles. I've got FMSA 7 setup and I'm able to use IWP. All of that is working. I converted an only FM6 cdml site using the converter tool. I just have no idea where to put the xml files within the web site heirarchy and how to call it. I see nothing referencing this in the documentation. Please help!

We are using FM8 and network sharing at our office. We have five offsite users and three inhouse users. We all know there is a limit of five users at any one time. However, our users have intermittant problems logging on for which we can't find a cause. The network people have checked the network and routers, etc. We have just heard something about a 24 hour limit or restriction or something where if any five users had been logged on the database at one time, we would have to wait 24 hrs from the time that any one or more of those users had logged off before any new users could log on. Does this make sense and is it true? Veronica

  17. Does anyone know if there is a way to have a file shared as one name, but have a different filesystem name? Kind of like with Windows shares where you can share a directory as some name other than the directory's actual name? For example, if I have a FM file named "customers.fp7", is there a way to share it with FileMaker Server so that it shows up as "Customer Tracking" when a client opens it remotely? Thanks!

  29. I have had filemaker server 7 running for many months without problem. I upgraded to server 8 today following the steps in exact order. No trouble with that but I have two problems. 1) I need to change the default folder that filemaker server looks in for the databases. The backup program is set to look in the old folder from filemaker 7. 2) 2 of my 3 databases work fine. The 3rd is present but "closed". Trying to open it continually fails. I checked the sharing of the file and it is on for tcp/ip but the "all user" checkbox is greyed out. Is the file corrupted? When connecting via a client this file is not listed as an option. Previously, we had all 6 files on 1 server. However, after a load test, it would perform very slowly after 50 people. The CPU on the server would max out (Server is dual G5 XServe). So, we decided to split the solution accross multiple servers. The configuration is as follows: Server 1: Interface File Server 2: Data File 1 (main) Server 3: Data File 2 Server 4: Data File 3,4,and 5 All file references were updated and double checked. 36. Hi All, I currently have FMP5 server running on a very, very old dedicated machine. Works fine, but the time has come to let classic go for the workstations and migrate to a true server setup in OSX. I know with the old server programs in OS9, if the host machine had "file sharing" active, FMP server performance would plummet. Well, I'm very much hoping not to have to buy two new machines here in order to upgrade our fileserver to OSX server and the FMP server program. So, the question is: can I run FMP8 server on a machine with OSX server without taking a huge hit in performance for either one? Or are there still some kind of conflict issues in OSX…

  37. Hi All: This is likely a Mac newbie question. I'm using FM Pro Server 7 running on a Mac. I've placed ten databases in the appropriate folder; FM Server sees only eight of them. I understand how domain authentication works and already have it operating on a few files on our Filemaker 7 Server Advanced/Windows Server 2003. Currently, I plan on having three privilege set groups to authenticate externally: Read only, Read/Create/Edit, and Read/Create/Edit/Delete. 47. I'm wondering if Server 5.5 and 7 Advanced can reside on the same machine. We bought S7A for now, to host Cleveland Consulting's Multi-user Calendar, and it will eventually host our upgraded maintenance management system. In the meantime, our maintenance system is still in V6 hosted by Server 5.5. The server in question is a brand new server with some very beefy specs. The multi user calendar is not a huge system and would have at most 20 concurrent users over IWP. But Server 5.5 would be hosting up to 80 concurrent users.

The office now wants to expand and have the "server" that's now running FM Pro 7 run FM Server 7 so they can access the information remotely (on blackberries, etc.) Can I do this on XP Home? I was thinking maybe with Apache for Windows.... If that's impossible, maybe FM Pro 7 will work with the IWP option, since they don't need more than 5 remote connections at a time. 66. Hi, We are hosting several DBs with FileMaker 7 Server to a local network, which is behind an IPNetRouter 1.6.8 box acting as our firewall/router. I can connect to the databases using FIleMaker 7 'client' on the local network, as well as remotely through the router's open port 5003. I can also access the machine using AFP, which I use for uploading databases to be served. My issue is I can't access the server using the FileMaker Server Admin program from outside the router. I can use it fine on the actual server, as well as from any internal machine. I have opened ports 50003 and 50006 on the router, as well as 5006 (which I don't think is necessary but was…

What should be reason for this error or how can i solve this complately.

  68. I got a Error code 618 "Database "core_data" is damaged and has been closed." in my server application event log. At that moment, the primary user (there are 7 total - 6 were not on at the time) got a message "FileMaker has been Forcefully Disconnected by the host" and lost connection. After restarting the services - the database was still "closed" and would not open int eh Admin Server. I restarted the server and the database is still closed. When I r-click it, and choose "open" I shows "checking..." and then returns to closed. Help, please. Brad.[color:red]

I'm trying to get external authentication working in my test environment, and I've got the files to authenticate using my OS 10.3 Server's Open Directory (Workgroup users can login to the database,) but I'm stuck on how to allow/force the users to change their password. The Change Password [] script step doesn't seem to work, and neither do the Open Directory's global policies or even the Workgroup user's Open Directory password options (to change password on next login or after n days.) The Password Service Server Log says "password change required", but it doesn't prompt the user to make the change. What am I missing here? I'm running FM Server 8 on a Mac OS…

  71. Hi, I've just updated the FMS on our server, and now the server wont startup anymore. I've repaired the privileges and restarted the server a few times. When you start connecting with the server admin, it doesnt even ask if you want to start up the server. The FM web engine is running though, which makes this an odd problem. The server is fully updated on MacOS X Server 10.3.9. Anyone experienced a problem like this? thanks in advance! cheers, Jeffer

Hello all, I am trying to set up a airport network to allow a couple of powerbooks to connect to our lan and access our server running FM7. I have followed Cyborgsams excellent guide and have also searched Apples airport forums on this problem. From the Powerbook I can use Server Admin and connect with no problem. If I add a our servers IP address in the Favourite Hosts, I get no file list but if I type in the files fullpath I can eventually connect. This is not the best solution as 1. there are over 30 files on this database 2. the laptop owners are not impressed with this workaround . Is there no work around for this. The problem seems to be the Airport router n…

  75. I'm trying to move my old Server 5 files, which I was hosting from a Mac, to a PC. Never considering that I would ever need to use a PC, I failed to follow proper PC naming conventions when I originally designed the database files several years ago. Some of the files have no extension name, some have .fp5, .fmp, .fp6, etc. I ran the files through Developer 6 trying to add the correct extension but to no avail. The relationships were broken and my opening script step failed to find the new files. Other than having to redo all the relationships, is there a workaround or is it too late to salvage these files?

I have discovered a world of messy files I did not know exist - both on FM Server 7 and my own computer (in My Computer > Manage). They are Event Viewer, Error logs and such. On my own computer, there are thousands and, already in FM Server, the list is quite long. I recall that, when installing Server, it asked how often to write events (I believe that was the wording) and I didn't mess with it because I didn't know the answer. Are these like temp files that can be deleted safely? I assume I'll want to keep the Server events for a certain period of time in case I need to track a problem but for how long? Can Scheduler (or even Server itself) be configured to…

First time poster here, long-time Filemaker user. We just purchased FMServer 7 Adv and I am wanting to use Custom Web Publishing, but don't know the first thing in setting it up, much less publishing a dbase. I'm currently using IWP, but have found some limitations and I'm wanting to use CWP. I'm assuming there isn't too much in publishing a dbase using CWP? Are they any quick-n-dirty steps to get rolling in this direction? Any Assistance will be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Jon

Three aux files wouldn't open when called from external sub-script in main file (even though all settings said they should), so I had added Open (Hidden) to these files in main file startup. I have changed nothing in this file (or my main file) which affects it. Two questions ple…

Does anybody know how to interpret entries in the wpc_access_log file? On W2K3, this file is located in the following path: FileMaker / FileMaker Server 7 / Web Publishing / Logs. There is another log file in that same directory called pe_application_log which is indicating that a few web publishing errors are occurring. This file just gives the FileMaker error number and a timestamp, but no further explanation. Both logs have timestamps, so it is possible to cross-reference from one log file to the other based on date and time of occurrence. I can find the corresponding entry in the wpc_access_log that tells me lots of good information, such as the account name…

The network is a 2 PC network using a linksys router. Windows XP Pro is working on both PC's & file sharing is enabled (and working). The main problems that the client is having with sharing are as follows: 1. If the host pc has file maker turned on & the files shared within the program (also turned…

When I remove one of my xServe G4 drive modules (and temporarily replace it with another), the backup paths in my backup schedules indicate 'not a valid path' and my backup schedules don't run. 89. Hi! I am installing FM Server Advanced and i cannot get it to work on the web. I followed the manuals and on local network everything works perfectly. But when trying to see database from the web nothing shows up. I have router properly configured with all ports open (5003, 16008-16018). FM Server and Web Console can see each other, shared databases are shown (in configuration console) and everything is on one computer so IPs are localhost. When I open the database from FMPro with Instant web publishing and configured port is ok. Thanks in advance Dejan

  97. Good day all We recently had to reinstall FMSA 7 from scratch on a XServe G5 running OS X 10.3.9 to get the recent 7.0v4 version of FMS to run properly. We went through installing the two original CD (FMS 7 & FMSA) then proceeded with upgrades of FMS 7 up to v4. The 7.v03 version updater of FMSA was then downloaded from FM's site. 100. Hi. I have FMServer 7 and fmpro 7. Everything has been working great until last week. Now, we can open our file Main.fp7, but for some reason, it will close itself and we have to reopen it. I can work on the file using FMPro Developer 7 or FMPro Developer Advanced (8) for a day or so. Today, however, the file was reopened and, an hour later, it was closed again. Anyone have any suggestions?
